Generally the attenuation of optical fibers used for sensor technology is higher than that of fibers for telecommunications. This is difficult to measure by the optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR). This paper presents a simple method that employs an integrating sphere. The total and scattering attenuation coefficients can be calculated and discriminated by the measured power of the light scattered out of the optical fiber and collected by the integrating sphere.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The first generation of installed optical cables in Eastern Europe has been in use for more than 20 years. This paper analyzes the change of optical fibers from the aspect of aging under the influence of transmitted signals and the aspect of parameter degradation during exploration. The paper provides the answer for how to repair the increased attenuation at 1310 nm. We also proposed the method of solution NG PON access for small remote villages that are situated along the analyzed route.  相似文献

Abstract

The impact of the compensator's location along the optical fiber on a variation of four-wave mixing power penalty is investigated theoretically and numerically for dispersion-managed fibers in wavelength division multiplexing systems. The power penalty is analyzed for fibers with different attenuation coefficients and lengths, and the optimum positions for the compensator along the fiber is discussed in cases of both dispersion compensation of each fiber section between two amplifiers and whole-compensation.  相似文献

Abstract

Areas for potential use of low-loss optical fibers in undersea communications are discussed, along with constraints that should be satisfied in incorporating these fibers into practical cables. Recent progress in construction of optical cable units with low attenuation, small diameter, low specific gravity, high tensile strength, and extended flexural endurance is described. Design concepts for six undersea optical cables, with a variety of diameters and capabilities, are presented in detail. Guidelines are discussed for the design of such cables. Related operational requirements on the cable, such as power transfer, are examined to show how unconventional approaches can allow advantages of the optical data link to be more fully utilized.  相似文献

自行研制了一套双积分球系统,应用该系统对离体小鼠皮肤在渗透剂无水甘油作用下,光学特性参量的变化进行了实时监测。实验结果表明:在无水甘油作用下,随着时间的延长,小鼠皮肤的约化散射系数明显减小,吸收系数略有增加,并最终导致了有效衰减系数的减小;但当作用时间超过25min后,样品的光学特性参量会趋于恒定。为生物组织光学特性控制作用提供了新的方法,这对组织光学成像研究是非常重要的。  相似文献

Abstract

This article reports a numerical investigation on the transmission performance of multilevel systems operating in building links encompassing step-index plastic optical fibers. For such an aim, a simplified model for the multimode fiber propagation is introduced. A sub-carrier multiplexing technique is also simulated to demonstrate the distribution of broadcasting television channels by adopting such fibers. The reported results show that a unique building network based on step-index plastic optical fibers is suitable to carry both Ethernet and broadcast TV signals in all rooms.  相似文献

The effect of glass composition, pure silica glass, boron-doped and fluorine-doped silica glasses of inner cladding, in the germano-silicate glass core fibers on optical and mechanical properties upon the γ-ray irradiation was investigated. Enhanced radiation hardening at 1,550 nm was found in both the B- and F-doped fibers after the γ-ray irradiation with dose-rate of 1.25 kGy/h. The radiation-induced attenuation (RIA) was found to increase in the order of the B-doped fiber, the F-doped fiber, and the silica fiber. While no major influence on the refractive index of the fibers after the γ-ray irradiation was found, the residual stress was slightly changed.  相似文献

实测了积分球输出光谱辐亮度分布曲线,并得到积分球光源的分布温度。从理论上分析了积分球光源分布温度影响宽波段光学遥感器绝对辐射定标精度的原因和机理,并仿真计算了包括积分球和太阳在内的几种不同分布温度光源定标某宽波段光学遥感器时得到的定标系数。仿真结果表明,不同分布温度间的定标系数最大差别大于2%。在此基础上提出了积分球光源分布温度影响绝对辐射定标系数的校正方法,为提高宽波段遥感器的辐射定标精度和遥感图像辐射校正提供了思路和依据。  相似文献

Abstract

Optical infrared (IR) fibers with core-clad structure are of great importance because they have better qualities than unclad fibers for most IR fiber applications, especially in CO2 laser power delivery and radiometry. We have fabricated core-clad polycrystalline silver halide optical fibers with different compositions and core diameters, and although their loss is still higher than that of unclad fibers, they already have many advantages and new capabilities. The behavior of the scattering loss along these fibers and other optical properties was measured and compared with that of unclad silver halide fibers. We show that the higher loss of clad fibers results mainly from excessive scattering. The improvement in the process of fabricating clad fibers enabled the production of new elements such as single-mode fibers (SMFs) and fiber bundles for thermal imaging.  相似文献

研究一种新型促渗剂——噻酮对皮肤组织光透明效果的影响。分别用单纯聚乙二醇400(PEG400)溶液以及PEG400与噻酮的混合溶液作用于含角质层及去角质层的离体乳猪皮肤,利用积分球系统动态检测样品对632.8 nm光的透射率变化,并对样品拍照获得直观图。结果表明:混合溶液作用于两种皮肤模型后,其光透明性均有不同程度的增加,即衰减系数降低;比较去角质层皮肤与含角质层皮肤的衰减系数的变化,前者比后者大19倍;单纯的PEG400仅对去角质皮肤有一定的光透明效果,并且所导致的皮肤衰减系数的降低仅为混合液作用后的2/3。因此,噻酮作为良好的促渗剂能与PEG400产生协同效应,有效提高皮肤光透明效果。  相似文献

Abstract

This work proposes some heuristic criteria aiming at saving energy by efficiently switching off optical fibers in generalized multi-protocol label switching-controlled optical networks during low traffic load periods and by taking into account network equipment power consumption. Simulations show that up to 80% of energy can be saved when the traffic is reduced by 20% with respect to its maximum. The impact of network design parameters is also investigated.  相似文献

模拟空间环境辐射定标技术主要用于卫星发射前对其所携带的多光谱扫描仪的响应特性进行辐射定标,为用户提供定标曲线。介绍了利用多个光源、多套定标光学系统的多光谱扫描仪辐射定标技术。多谱段光源系统由太阳辐照积分球和黑体组成,积分球用于可见光、近红外谱段的辐射定标,黑体用于远红外谱段的辐射定标。多谱段定标光学系统通过在真空低温环境下的精密传动机构切换反射镜位置,以离轴抛物面反射镜为中心形成两套光学系统,分别将积分球、黑体的辐射反射到扫描仪的入口,从而一次试验即可完成卫星多光谱扫描仪全谱段的辐射定标。  相似文献

In order to meet the measurement requirements of image sensors’ uniformity of the CCD system with a large-field angle, the design for the form and structure of the integrating sphere, with 600–800 mm and hyper-uniform luminance double hemisphere is presented. LightTools software is used for simulation. The simulation result indicates that the compact structure of the integrating sphere with asymmetric double hemisphere renders both the design values and systematic performance parameters superior to those of the common integrating sphere. The integrating sphere system designed is manufactured and its optical parameters are tested. The test result indicates that at the outlet of the integrating sphere, the variation of illuminance is less than 2.3%, and the variation of luminance on the inner surface is less than 4.4%. Hence, it is concluded that this system can be widely utilized in measuring image sensors’ uniformity of the photoelectric imaging system with a large-field angle.  相似文献

The design of hermetically double-coated optical fibers to minimize hydrostatic pressure–induced stresses is investigated. Several stresses are important in the hermetically double-coated optical fibers, and they would produce the excess bending losses or the failure of hermetic coatings. These stresses can be minimized by appropriately selecting material's properties of hermetic coatings and their thicknesses. The hydrostatic pressure–induced stresses in optical fibers with some selected metallic coatings are also considered. The results show that chromium has the best performance in the minimization of hydrostatic pressure–induced stresses. However, lead and indium are poor materials.  相似文献

Abstract

Temperature-induced changes in the attenuation of multimode optical fiber cables are shown to be caused by mismatch between the thermal expansion coefficients of the fiber and the cabling materials. A quantitative theoretical model of low temperature loss, based on the formation of fiber microbends by microvariations in the jacket concentricity, is described. This model applies to tightly jacketed, soft buffered cable designs. An equation relating the low temperature optical attenuation to cable parameters is derived using this model. Good agreement is obtained between this theoretical prediction and experimental results. The theoretical model is used to compare the effectiveness of different cable designs on reducing excess loss at low temperature.  相似文献

The spectral excess attenuation caused by coupling between the guided HE11 mode and radiation modes is calculated with the aid of the formula derived by Marcuse for the radiation loss of a monomode optical fiber with step-index profile and sinusoidally perturbed core radius. The pronounced minima and maxima of the spectral excess attenuation curve converge as the spatial frequency of the perturbation of the core radius increases. Even perturbation amplitudes as small as 0.01 μm may lead to excess attenuations of the order of 10 dB/km if the radiation wavelength does not coincide with an attenuation minimum. The spectral behavior of the excess attenuation can be utilized to design fibers which act as optical filters.  相似文献

Abstract

This article investigates optical power transmission characteristics with varying launching conditions concentrating on weakly guiding, step-index highly multi-moded optical fibers. A single analytical expression for the fractional power transmitted per mode in a highly multi-moded fiber is obtained. This expression is used to numerically obtain the fractional power per mode, power per modal order, and finally, the total power carried by the fiber. Experiments are carried out to investigate the effect of launching conditions on the total power carried by the fiber and to establish a possible correlation with the theoretical results. Reasons for the observed experimental discrepancies are also discussed.

A method of integrating sphere effective optical path length (EOPL) evaluation using tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy for gas detection was demonstrated. Oxygen was used as a sample gas for an 8.38 cm diameter integrating sphere calibration; 393.7 ± 1.3 cm EOPL was obtained from the wavelength modulation spectroscopy with second harmonic calibration by measuring oxygen P11 line at 764 nm, which is in agreement with that of 393 cm by using direct absorption spectroscopy calibration. The EOPL calibration accuracy of this method can reach 0.33 %. It has been justified that the EOPL of an integrating sphere is independent of the incident light intensity.  相似文献

Abstract

As a result of a study on the potential of optical-fiber multiterminal data systems for avionics, a design approach has been chosen that is expected to be a suitable basis for a wide range of applications. This is a time division multiplexing system, which has features of being highly immune to problems of optical loss and multipath effects in optical highways having redundant paths, and of avoiding the need for any master terminal. This system approach is tailored to characteristics of optical fibers, and should lead to good integrity and ruggedness. A breadboarded model of a terminal has been demonstrated, and the construction of functional models is currently under way.  相似文献
