The behavior of a fiber laser-amplifier is considered, including the effects of mode coupling, radiation losses, and noise. In the linear regime, a competitive effect between mode coupling and losses is present, in the sense that mode coupling tends to equalize the gains of different modes, while radiation losses favor low-order modes. Thus, single-mode amplification and collective amplification are predominant, respectively, in the weak and strong coupling case. In the saturated regime a mode coupling effect is found that is independent of fiber imperfections and relies on the nonlinear nature of the process.  相似文献

Using conventional coupled-mode theory, a set of coupled-mode equations are formulated for single-helix chiral fiber long-period gratings. A helical-core fiber is analyzed as an example. The analysis is simple in mathematical form and intuitive in physical concept. Based on the analysis, the polarization independence of mode coupling in special fiber gratings is revealed. The transmission characteristics of helical-core fibers are also simulated and discussed.  相似文献

Coupled-mode theory is used to calculate Raman gain and spontaneous efficiency in silicon waveguides with cross-sectional areas ranging from 0.16 to 16 microm2. We find a monotonic increase in the Raman gain as the waveguide cross section decreases for the range of dimensions considered. It is also found that mode coupling between the Stokes modes is insignificant, and thus polarization multiplexing is possible. The results also demonstrate that for submicrometer waveguide dimensions the Einstein relation between spontaneous efficiency and stimulated gain no longer holds.  相似文献

We derive the coupled-mode equations for a metamaterial fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs). The coupled-mode theory describing wave propagation in periodic structures such as FBG is generalized for studying the transmission and reflection of electromagnetic waves through a FBG containing metamaterial layers. This approach shows that the band gap becomes broader in comparison with a conventional FBG. It is observed that the central frequency of the band gap has a shift in regard of changing metamaterial thickness. We verify this investigation through attaining the transmission and reflection spectra of a conventional FBG while we are setting related parameters. Furthermore, this proposed structure can be applied as a tunable filter.  相似文献

This paper presents the application of the differential equation approach to solving the second-order coupled-mode equations in inhomogeneous ocean environments. The model incorporates sound velocity profile points to construct depth-dependent, piecewise linear, ocean and bottom environments along a range grid. Modal solutions are evaluated in terms of Airy functions. The formalism to evaluate analytically the mode-coupling coefficients is presented. Comparisons to conventional expressions of the coefficients are made. The integro-differential form of the coupled equations is solved using an approach developed in nuclear theory that incorporates the Lanczos method [Knobles, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 96, 1741-1747 (1994)]. Demonstration of the practicality of this approach is made by applying the results in actual calculations with realistic ocean environments. The formalism to evaluate analytically the mode-coupling coefficients is presented. Several benchmark examples were examined in order to validate the model and are discussed, including propagation over a hill, benchmark wedge problems, and a range-varying sound speed profile benchmark. The importance of this model is also demonstrated by the physical insight gained in having a coupled-mode approach to solving range-dependent problems.  相似文献

A new coupled-mode formulation is developed for grating-assisted parallel optical fiber cores. The theory is derived from the scalar wave equation by perturbation method. The diffraction caused by grating and coupler in the grating region are both considered. Based on Sagnac interferometer, a simple distributed optical fiber sensing system with sub-loop is presented to monitor the vibration applied on the sensing fiber. By introducing a sub-loop, three output beams of interference with different delay time are gotten. Location of the vibration is analyzed through mathematical-physical equations. The vibration frequency, amplitude, and location are theoretically simulated. The results agree well with the previous experiments.  相似文献

We consider the evolution of optical solitons inside a nonlinear dispersive fiber with random birefringence, causing polarization-mode dispersion. We convert the pair of coupled nonlinear Schr?dinger equations satisfied by the orthogonally polarized components into a Fokker-Planck equation using the collective-variable approach. We solve this equation and derive expressions for the probability density functions associated with the differential group delay and the pulse width in the limit of large propagation distances.  相似文献

长周期光纤光栅作为透射型光无源器件,以其在通信和传感领域具有广阔应用前景而引起人们的关注。要得到满足性能要求的光纤光栅,对其透射谱的分析是基础。通过耦合模方程确定了基模和一阶各次包层模之间的耦合常数。在设定的光纤光栅参数条件下,通过Matlab进行模拟得到了最终需要的长周期光纤光栅透射谱,并由此得出:长周期光纤光栅谐振波长出现的位置主要由光栅的周期决定,损耗大小可以通过调节光栅长度和折射率来实现。  相似文献

We present a coupled-mode theory of fiber-optic add-drop filters, which involve directional coupling between two fibers combined with fiber Bragg gratings defined inside the coupling region. The analysis self-consistently accounts for both the directional and the reflection coupling, and the propagation constants and structure of the supermodes of the combined structure are derived. We present a detailed analysis of a filter design based on identical fibers. The calculated device parameters satisfy the requirements for dense wavelength-division multiplexing applications.  相似文献

将取样光纤光栅近似为引入多个有规律的大尺寸缺陷的一维二元光子晶体,运用光子晶体传输矩阵理论分析了其长度L、周期LA、折射率调制量δneff和采样率p等参量对其反射谱的影响规律,并将所得结果与用取样光纤光栅传输矩阵法计算所得结果进行了比较,得出了用光子晶体理论分析与用传统的模耦合理论分析相吻合的特性。在分析取样光纤光栅的其它性质以及将其应用于实际时都可借鉴此理论,以达到工程实际应用的最佳效果。  相似文献
