Some thoughts on the elative strengths of U. S. and foreign fiber optics industries

The intent of this paper is to present some personal observations on the relative strength of U.S. and foreign fiber optics industries. Most of the paper is devoted to a comparison of the Japanese and the American strengths, since these two countries seem to be most active in the field. The potential world market is huge, and this has led to intense competition between countries with highly developed technology.     

The competitiveness of U.S. manufacturers in the global market for fiber optics

U.S. manufacturers of fiber optic equipment continue to be major competitors in the world markets for these products. U.S. producers account for approximately half of the total worldwide production of optical fiber and cable. In active components for fiber optic transmission systems (transmitters, receivers, amplifiers, and related components), U.S. firms are beginning to recapture some of the market share previously lost to foreign competitors. This article provides a brief overview of the competitiveness of U.S. manufacturers in the global market for fiber optic equipment, with particular focus on European and Japanese competitors.     

Some thoughts on the mass of the top quark

We propose a new mechanism for up-down symmetry breaking within the context of a technicolor scenario. The experimentally determined ratio $\text{M}{}_{\mathrm{<mtext>W</mtext>}}\text{M}{}_{\mathrm{<mtext>Z</mtext>}}\text{cos}\text{θ}{}_{\mathrm{<mtext>W</mtext>}}\text{? 1}$ is in addition preserved at the technicolor scale. If we assume that the mechanism works at the level of the heaviest generation we find $\text{m}{}_{\mathrm{<mtext>t</mtext>}}\text{= (?}{}^{\mathrm{<mtext>?</mtext><mtext>1</mtext><mtext>2</mtext>}}\text{)38}\text{GeV}$. The parameter ? depends on strong technicolor dynamics and can in principle be determined. Via a crude estimate we find ? to be a number of order 1.

Heat pipe research and development in the U.S.S.R.

The review covers a number of works on heat pipes designed in the U.S.S.R. between 1970 and 1987, and consists of two parts. The first part deals with fundamental studies of energy and substance transfer in closed evaporator-condenser systems. The second one contains the results of integration of heat pipes, thermosyphons and units on their base in different branches of engineering, agriculture and building.     

Oscillator strengths and lifetimes for the S V spectrum

The semi-empirical weighted oscillator strengths (gf) and the lifetimes presented in this work for all experimentally known electric dipole S V spectral lines and energy levels were carried out in a multiconfiguration Hartree–Fock relativistic (HFR) approach. In this calculation, the electrostatic parameters were optimized by a least-squares procedure, in order to improve the adjustment to experimental energy levels. This method produces lifetime values and gf values that are in agreement with intensity observations used for the interpretation of spectrograms of solar and laboratory plasmas.     

Measuring and Modeling the U.S. Regulatory Ecosystem

Over the last 23 years, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has required over 34,000 companies to file over 165,000 annual reports. These reports, the so-called “Form 10-Ks,” contain a characterization of a company’s financial performance and its risks, including the regulatory environment in which a company operates. In this paper, we analyze over 4.5 million references to U.S. Federal Acts and Agencies contained within these reports to measure the regulatory ecosystem, in which companies are organisms inhabiting a regulatory environment. While individuals across the political, economic, and academic world frequently refer to trends in this regulatory ecosystem, far less attention has been paid to supporting such claims with large-scale, longitudinal data. In this paper, in addition to positing a model of regulatory ecosystems, we document an increase in the regulatory energy per filing, i.e., a warming “temperature.” We also find that the diversity of the regulatory ecosystem has been increasing over the past two decades. These findings support the claim that regulatory activity and complexity are increasing, and this framework contributes an important step towards improving academic and policy discussions around legal complexity and regulation.

A panoramic view of fiber and integrated optics in spain

Abstract

A general view of the present status of optics and related fields in Spain is presented. The main emphasis is on the relation between optics and some emerging areas such as Optical Communications and Nonlinear Optics. Principal activities of the more important groups are summarized.     

Weighted oscillator strengths and lifetimes for the S XIV spectrum

The weighted oscillator strengths gf and the lifetimes for S XIV presented in this work have been calculated in a multiconfigurational Hartree–Fock relativistic approach. This method produces gf values that are in better agreement with observed line intensities and lifetime values closer to the experimentally determined ones. 2011 U.S. National School on Neutron and X-ray Scattering

The 13^th annual U.S. National School on Neutron and X-ray Scattering was held June 11-25, 2011, at both Oak Ridge and Argonne National Laboratories. This school brought together 65 early career graduate students from 56 different universities in the United States and provided them with a broad introduction to the properties and techniques available at the major large-scale neutron and synchrotron X-ray facilities. This school is focused primarily on techniques relevant to the physical sciences, but also touches on cross-disciplinary bio-related scattering measurements. During the school, the students received lectures by more than 30 researchers from academia, industry, and national laboratories and participated in a number of short demonstration experiments at Argonne's Advanced Photon Source (APS) and Oak Ridge's Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) and High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) facilities to get hands-on experience in using neutron and synchrotron sources.

Some simple thoughts about the structure of anomalous muonium

The subject of this paper is anomalous muonium and the kind of model that can be given to explain its observed properties. The implications of experimental findings on a model are discussed and several possible models are suggested. No clearly superior model yet exists, in part because of a lack of theoretical studies of possible models and in part because of the lack of sufficiently definitive experiments.This work was supported by the National Science Foundation under grant number DMR-79-09223.

据统计，我国已经是扬声器单元的生产大国。但是，我国多数扬声器产品还是处在低、中档技术含量的水平，生产厂的研究能力也还相当薄弱和缺乏战略安排，他们的产品开发也多是处在选料装配的状态。
