At high presentation levels, normally aided ears yield better performance for speech identification than normally unaided ears, while at low presentation levels the converse is true [S. Gatehouse, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 86, 2103-2106 (1989)]. To explain this process further, the speech identification abilities of four subjects with bilateral symmetric sensorineural hearing impairment were investigated following provision of a single hearing aid. Results showed significant increases in the benefit from amplifying speech in the aided ear, but not in the control ear. In addition, a headphone simulation of the unaided condition for the fitted ear shows a decrease in speech identification. The benefits from providing a particular frequency spectrum do not emerge immediately, but over a time course of at least 6-12 weeks. The findings support the existence of perceptual acclimatization effects, and call into question short-term methods of hearing aid evaluation and selection by comparative speech identification tests.  相似文献

The speech understanding of persons with "flat" hearing loss (HI) was compared to a normal-hearing (NH) control group to examine how hearing loss affects the contribution of speech information in various frequency regions. Speech understanding in noise was assessed at multiple low- and high-pass filter cutoff frequencies. Noise levels were chosen to ensure that the noise, rather than quiet thresholds, determined audibility. The performance of HI subjects was compared to a NH group listening at the same signal-to-noise ratio and a comparable presentation level. Although absolute speech scores for the HI group were reduced, performance improvements as the speech and noise bandwidth increased were comparable between groups. These data suggest that the presence of hearing loss results in a uniform, rather than frequency-specific, deficit in the contribution of speech information. Measures of auditory thresholds in noise and speech intelligibility index (SII) calculations were also performed. These data suggest that differences in performance between the HI and NH groups are due primarily to audibility differences between groups. Measures of auditory thresholds in noise showed the "effective masking spectrum" of the noise was greater for the HI than the NH subjects.  相似文献

The present experiments examine the effects of listener age and hearing sensitivity on the ability to understand temporally altered speech in quiet when the proportion of a sentence processed by time compression is varied. Additional conditions in noise investigate whether or not listeners are affected by alterations in the presentation rate of background speech babble, relative to the presentation rate of the target speech signal. Younger and older adults with normal hearing and with mild-to-moderate sensorineural hearing losses served as listeners. Speech stimuli included sentences, syntactic sets, and random-order words. Presentation rate was altered via time compression applied to the entire stimulus or to selected phrases within the stimulus. Older listeners performed more poorly than younger listeners in most conditions involving time compression, and their performance decreased progressively with the proportion of the stimulus that was processed with time compression. Older listeners also performed more poorly than younger listeners in all noise conditions, but both age groups demonstrated better performance in conditions incorporating a mismatch in the presentation rate between target signal and background babble compared to conditions with matched rates. The age effects in quiet are consistent with the generalized slowing hypothesis of aging. Performance patterns in noise tentatively support the notion that altered rates of speech signal and background babble may provide a cue to enhance auditory figure-ground perception by both younger and older listeners.  相似文献

Previous research has demonstrated reduced speech recognition when speech is presented at higher-than-normal levels (e.g., above conversational speech levels), particularly in the presence of speech-shaped background noise. Persons with hearing loss frequently listen to speech-in-noise at these levels through hearing aids, which incorporate multiple-channel, wide dynamic range compression. This study examined the interactive effects of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), speech presentation level, and compression ratio on consonant recognition in noise. Nine subjects with normal hearing identified CV and VC nonsense syllables in a speech-shaped noise at two SNRs (0 and +6 dB), three presentation levels (65, 80, and 95 dB SPL) and four compression ratios (1:1, 2:1, 4:1, and 6:1). Stimuli were processed through a simulated three-channel, fast-acting, wide dynamic range compression hearing aid. Consonant recognition performance decreased as compression ratio increased and presentation level increased. Interaction effects were noted between SNR and compression ratio, as well as between presentation level and compression ratio. Performance decrements due to increases in compression ratio were larger at the better (+6 dB) SNR and at the lowest (65 dB SPL) presentation level. At higher levels (95 dB SPL), such as those experienced by persons with hearing loss, increasing compression ratio did not significantly affect speech intelligibility.  相似文献

Three experiments were conducted to study relative contributions of speaking rate, temporal envelope, and temporal fine structure to clear speech perception. Experiment I used uniform time scaling to match the speaking rate between clear and conversational speech. Experiment II decreased the speaking rate in conversational speech without processing artifacts by increasing silent gaps between phonetic segments. Experiment III created "auditory chimeras" by mixing the temporal envelope of clear speech with the fine structure of conversational speech, and vice versa. Speech intelligibility in normal-hearing listeners was measured over a wide range of signal-to-noise ratios to derive speech reception thresholds (SRT). The results showed that processing artifacts in uniform time scaling, particularly time compression, reduced speech intelligibility. Inserting gaps in conversational speech improved the SRT by 1.3 dB, but this improvement might be a result of increased short-term signal-to-noise ratios during level normalization. Data from auditory chimeras indicated that the temporal envelope cue contributed more to the clear speech advantage at high signal-to-noise ratios, whereas the temporal fine structure cue contributed more at low signal-to-noise ratios. Taken together, these results suggest that acoustic cues for the clear speech advantage are multiple and distributed.  相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to examine the benefits of providing audible speech to listeners with sensorineural hearing loss when the speech is presented in a background noise. Previous studies have shown that when listeners have a severe hearing loss in the higher frequencies, providing audible speech (in a quiet background) to these higher frequencies usually results in no improvement in speech recognition. In the present experiments, speech was presented in a background of multitalker babble to listeners with various severities of hearing loss. The signal was low-pass filtered at numerous cutoff frequencies and speech recognition was measured as additional high-frequency speech information was provided to the hearing-impaired listeners. It was found in all cases, regardless of hearing loss or frequency range, that providing audible speech resulted in an increase in recognition score. The change in recognition as the cutoff frequency was increased, along with the amount of audible speech information in each condition (articulation index), was used to calculate the "efficiency" of providing audible speech. Efficiencies were positive for all degrees of hearing loss. However, the gains in recognition were small, and the maximum score obtained by an listener was low, due to the noise background. An analysis of error patterns showed that due to the limited speech audibility in a noise background, even severely impaired listeners used additional speech audibility in the high frequencies to improve their perception of the "easier" features of speech including voicing.  相似文献

Vowel and consonant confusion matrices were collected in the hearing alone (H), lipreading alone (L), and hearing plus lipreading (HL) conditions for 28 patients participating in the clinical trial of the multiple-channel cochlear implant. All patients were profound-to-totally deaf and "hearing" refers to the presentation of auditory information via the implant. The average scores were 49% for vowels and 37% for consonants in the H condition and the HL scores were significantly higher than the L scores. Information transmission and multidimensional scaling analyses showed that different speech features were conveyed at different levels in the H and L conditions. In the HL condition, the visual and auditory signals provided independent information sources for each feature. For vowels, the auditory signal was the major source of duration information, while the visual signal was the major source of first and second formant frequency information. The implant provided information about the amplitude envelope of the speech and the estimated frequency of the main spectral peak between 800 and 4000 Hz, which was useful for consonant recognition. A speech processor that coded the estimated frequency and amplitude of an additional peak between 300 and 1000 Hz was shown to increase the vowel and consonant recognition in the H condition by improving the transmission of first formant and voicing information.  相似文献

The speech understanding of persons with sloping high-frequency (HF) hearing impairment (HI) was compared to normal hearing (NH) controls and previous research on persons with "flat" losses [Hornsby and Ricketts (2003). J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 113, 1706-1717] to examine how hearing loss configuration affects the contribution of speech information in various frequency regions. Speech understanding was assessed at multiple low- and high-pass filter cutoff frequencies. Crossover frequencies, defined as the cutoff frequencies at which low- and high-pass filtering yielded equivalent performance, were significantly lower for the sloping HI, compared to NH, group suggesting that HF HI limits the utility of HF speech information. Speech intelligibility index calculations suggest this limited utility was not due simply to reduced audibility but also to the negative effects of high presentation levels and a poorer-than-normal use of speech information in the frequency region with the greatest hearing loss (the HF regions). This deficit was comparable, however, to that seen in low-frequency regions of persons with similar HF thresholds and "flat" hearing losses suggesting that sensorineural HI results in a "uniform," rather than frequency-specific, deficit in speech understanding, at least for persons with HF thresholds up to 60-80 dB HL.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of hearing protection devices (HPDs) on the understanding of speech in young adults with normal hearing, both in a silent situation and in the presence of ambient noise. The experimental research was carried out with the following variables: five different conditions of HPD use (without protectors, with two earplugs and with two earmuffs); a type of noise (pink noise); 4 test levels (60, 70, 80 and 90 dB[A]); 6 signal/noise ratios (without noise, +5, +10, zero, −5 and −10 dB); 5 repetitions for each case, totalling 600 tests with 10 monosyllables in each one. The variable measure was the percentage of correctly heard words (monosyllabic) in the test. The results revealed that, at the lowest levels (60 and 70 dB), the protectors reduced the intelligibility of speech (compared to the tests without protectors) while, in the presence of ambient noise levels of 80 and 90 dB and unfavourable signal/noise ratios (0, −5 and −10 dB), the HPDs improved the intelligibility. A comparison of the effectiveness of earplugs versus earmuffs showed that the former offer greater efficiency in respect to the recognition of speech, providing a 30% improvement over situations in which no protection is used. As might be expected, this study confirmed that the protectors' influence on speech intelligibility is related directly to the spectral curve of the protector's attenuation.  相似文献

In a 3D auditory display, sounds are presented over headphones in a way that they seem to originate from virtual sources in a space around the listener. This paper describes a study on the possible merits of such a display for bandlimited speech with respect to intelligibility and talker recognition against a background of competing voices. Different conditions were investigated: speech material (words/sentences), presentation mode (monaural/binaural/3D), number of competing talkers (1-4), and virtual position of the talkers (in 45 degrees-steps around the front horizontal plane). Average results for 12 listeners show an increase of speech intelligibility for 3D presentation for two or more competing talkers compared to conventional binaural presentation. The ability to recognize a talker is slightly better and the time required for recognition is significantly shorter for 3D presentation in the presence of two or three competing talkers. Although absolute localization of a talker is rather poor, spatial separation appears to have a significant effect on communication. For either speech intelligibility, talker recognition, or localization, no difference is found between the use of an individualized 3D auditory display and a general display.  相似文献

Acceptable noise level (ANL) is a measure of a listener's acceptance of background noise when listening to speech. A consistent finding in research on ANL is large intersubject variability in the acceptance of background noise. This variability is not related to age, gender, hearing sensitivity, type of background noise, speech perception in noise performance, cochlear responses, or efferent activity of the medial olivocochlear pathway. In the present study, auditory evoked potentials were examined in 21 young females with normal hearing with low and high acceptance of background noise to determine whether differences in judgments of background noise are related to differences measured in aggregate physiological responses from the auditory nervous system. Group differences in the auditory brainstem response, auditory middle latency response, and cortical, auditory late latency response indicate that differences in more central regions of the nervous system account for, at least in part, the variability in listeners' willingness to accept background noise when listening to speech.  相似文献

Fourteen prelinguistically profoundly hearing-impaired children were fitted with the multichannel electrotactile speech processor (Tickle Talker) developed by Cochlear Pty. Ltd. and the University of Melbourne. Each child participated in an ongoing training and evaluation program, which included measures of speech perception and production. Results of speech perception testing demonstrate clear benefits for children fitted with the device. Thresholds for detection of pure tones were lower for the Tickle Talker than for hearing aids across the frequency range 250-4000 Hz, with the greatest tactual advantage in the high-frequency consonant range (above 2000 Hz). Individual and mean speech detection thresholds for the Ling 5-sound test confirmed that speech sounds were detected by the electrotactile device at levels consistent with normal conversational speech. Results for three speech feature tests showed significant improvement when the Tickle Talker was used in combination with hearing aids (TA) as compared with hearing aids along (A). Mean scores in the TA condition increased by 11% for vowel duration, 20% for vowel formant, and 25% for consonant manner as compared with hearing aids alone. Mean TA score on a closed-set word test (WIPI) was 48%, as compared with 32% for hearing aids alone. Similarly, mean WIPI score for the combination of Tickle Talker, lipreading, and hearing aids (TLA) increased by 6% as compared with combined lipreading and hearing aid (LA) scores. Mean scores on open-set sentences (BKB) showed a significant increase of 21% for the tactually aided condition (TLA) as compared with unaided (LA). These results indicate that, given sufficient training, children can utilize speech feature information provided through the Tickle Talker to improve discrimination of words and sentences. To examine spectral and threshold effects for speech and noise at high levels, recognition of nonsense syllables was assessed for low-pass-filtered speech and speech-shaped maskers and high-pass-filtered speech and speech-shaped maskers at three speech levels, with signal-to-noise ratio held constant. Subjects were younger adults with normal hearing and older adults with normal hearing but significantly higher average quiet thresholds. A broadband masker was always present to minimize audibility differences between subject groups and across presentation levels. For subjects with lower thresholds, the declines in recognition of low-frequency syllables in low-frequency maskers were attributed to nonlinear growth of masking which reduced "effective" signal-to-noise ratio at high levels, whereas the decline for subjects with higher thresholds was not fully explained by nonlinear masking growth. For all subjects, masking growth did not entirely account for declines in recognition of high-frequency syllables in high-frequency maskers at high levels. Relative to younger subjects with normal hearing and lower quiet thresholds, older subjects with normal hearing and higher quiet thresholds had poorer consonant recognition in noise, especially for high-frequency speech in high-frequency maskers. Age-related effects on thresholds and task proficiency may be determining factors in the recognition of speech in noise at high levels.  相似文献

The speech of a profoundly postlingually deafened teenager was recorded before, immediately after, 3 months after, and 1 year after electrical stimulation with a Nucleus multichannel cochlear implant. Listener tests of target words revealed significant improvement in overall quality over the year. Spectrograms showed less aspiration and better definition of the lower formants. Acoustic measurements indicated immediate change in F0 and gradual changes in syllable duration and some aspects of voicing and manner of articulation. Vowel space shrank steadily over the year, with both first- and second-formant frequencies dropping. Prestimulation results are discussed relative to the literature on the speech of the congenitally hearing impaired. Effects of multichannel electrical stimulation on speech are compared with studies of single-electrode stimulation.  相似文献

This study investigated the relationship between audibility and predictions of speech recognition for children and adults with normal hearing. The Speech Intelligibility Index (SII) is used to quantify the audibility of speech signals and can be applied to transfer functions to predict speech recognition scores. Although the SII is used clinically with children, relatively few studies have evaluated SII predictions of children's speech recognition directly. Children have required more audibility than adults to reach maximum levels of speech understanding in previous studies. Furthermore, children may require greater bandwidth than adults for optimal speech understanding, which could influence frequency-importance functions used to calculate the SII. Speech recognition was measured for 116 children and 19 adults with normal hearing. Stimulus bandwidth and background noise level were varied systematically in order to evaluate speech recognition as predicted by the SII and derive frequency-importance functions for children and adults. Results suggested that children required greater audibility to reach the same level of speech understanding as adults. However, differences in performance between adults and children did not vary across frequency bands.  相似文献

Three studies are reported on the speech perception of normally hearing and hearing-impaired adults using combinations of visual, auditory, and tactile input. In study 1, mean scores for four normally hearing subjects showed that addition of tactile information, provided through the multichannel electrotactile speech processor, to either audition alone (300-Hz low-pass-filtered speech) or lipreading plus audition resulted in significant improvements in phoneme and word discrimination scores. Information transmission analyses demonstrated the effectiveness of the tactile aid in providing cues to duration, F1 and F2 features for vowels, and manner of articulation features for consonants, especially features requiring detection and discrimination of high-frequency information. In study 2, six different cutoff frequencies were used for a low-pass-filtered auditory signal. Mean scores for vowel and consonant identification were significantly higher with the addition of tactile input to audition alone at each cutoff frequency up to 1500 Hz. The mean speechtracking rate was also significantly increased by the additional tactile input up to 1500 Hz. Study 3 examined speech discrimination of three hearing-impaired adults. Additional information available through the tactile aid was shown to improve speech discrimination scores; however, the degree of increase was inversely related to the level of residual hearing. Results indicate that the electrotactile aid may be useful for patients with little residual hearing and for the severely to profoundly hearing impaired, who could benefit from the high-frequency information presented through the tactile modality, but unavailable through hearing aids.  相似文献

Although both perceived vocal effort and intensity are known to influence the perceived distance of speech, little is known about the processes listeners use to integrate these two parameters into a single estimate of talker distance. In this series of experiments, listeners judged the distances of prerecorded speech samples presented over headphones in a large open field. In the first experiment, virtual synthesis techniques were used to simulate speech signals produced by a live talker at distances ranging from 0.25 to 64 m. In the second experiment, listeners judged the apparent distances of speech stimuli produced over a 60-dB range of different vocal effort levels (production levels) and presented over a 34-dB range of different intensities (presentation levels). In the third experiment, the listeners judged the distances of time-reversed speech samples. The results indicate that production level and presentation level influence distance perception differently for each of three distinct categories of speech. When the stimulus was high-level voiced speech (produced above 66 dB SPL 1 m from the talker's mouth), the distance judgments doubled with each 8-dB increase in production level and each 12-dB decrease in presentation level. When the stimulus was low-level voiced speech (produced at or below 66 dB SPL at 1 m), the distance judgments doubled with each 15-dB increase in production level but were relatively insensitive to changes in presentation level at all but the highest intensity levels tested. When the stimulus was whispered speech, the distance judgments were unaffected by changes in production level and only decreased with increasing presentation level when the intensity of the stimulus exceeded 66 dB SPL. The distance judgments obtained in these experiments were consistent across a range of different talkers, listeners, and utterances, suggesting that voice-based distance cueing could provide a robust way to control the apparent distances of speech sounds in virtual audio displays.  相似文献

Recognition of isolated monosyllabic words in quiet and recognition of key words in low- and high-context sentences in babble were measured in a large sample of older persons enrolled in a longitudinal study of age-related hearing loss. Repeated measures were obtained yearly or every 2 to 3 years. To control for concurrent changes in pure-tone thresholds and speech levels, speech-recognition scores were adjusted using an importance-weighted speech-audibility metric (AI). Linear-regression slope estimated the rate of change in adjusted speech-recognition scores. Recognition of words in quiet declined significantly faster with age than predicted by declines in speech audibility. As subjects aged, observed scores deviated increasingly from AI-predicted scores, but this effect did not accelerate with age. Rate of decline in word recognition was significantly faster for females than males and for females with high serum progesterone levels, whereas noise history had no effect. Rate of decline did not accelerate with age but increased with degree of hearing loss, suggesting that with more severe injury to the auditory system, impairments to auditory function other than reduced audibility resulted in faster declines in word recognition as subjects aged. Recognition of key words in low- and high-context sentences in babble did not decline significantly with age.  相似文献

Using an adaptive strategy, the effects of mild sensorineural hearing loss and adult listeners' chronological age on speech recognition in babble were evaluated. The signal-to-babble ratio required to achieve 50% recognition was measured for three speech materials presented at soft to loud conversational speech levels. Four groups of subjects were tested: (1) normal-hearing listeners less than 44 years of age, (2) subjects less than 44 years old with mild sensorineural hearing loss and excellent speech recognition in quiet, (3) normal-hearing listeners greater than 65 with normal hearing, and (4) subjects greater than 65 years old with mild hearing loss and excellent performance in quiet. Groups 1 and 3, and groups 2 and 4 were matched on the basis of pure-tone thresholds, and thresholds for each of the three speech materials presented in quiet. In addition, groups 1 and 2 were similar in terms of mean age and age range, as were groups 3 and 4. Differences in performance in noise as a function of age were observed for both normal-hearing and hearing-impaired listeners despite equivalent performance in quiet. Subjects with mild hearing loss performed significantly worse than their normal-hearing counterparts. These results and their implications are discussed.  相似文献

Silman and colleagues [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 76, 1347-1362 (1984)] have reported an apparent effect of late auditory deprivation; this presents as loss of discrimination over time in the unaided ear of individuals using a single hearing aid fitted in middle age. In a replication of the basic effect, the influence of presentation level was examined in 24 monaurally aided subjects. The effect was reversed at presentation levels below about 75 dB SPL. The ear that is normally aided performs better at high presentation levels, while, at lower presentation levels, the converse is true. Thus it appears that a form of selective adjustment takes place in a particular part of the dynamic range, at least in ears with a dynamic range limited by a sensory hearing loss. If this interpretation is correct, there are important implications for research on perceptual learning and for the time course of evaluation in hearing aid provision.  相似文献
