To assess age-related differences in benefit from masker modulation, younger and older adults with normal hearing but not identical audiograms listened to nonsense syllables in each of two maskers: (1) a steady-state noise shaped to match the long-term spectrum of the speech, and (2) this same noise modulated by a 10-Hz square wave, resulting in an interrupted noise. An additional low-level broadband noise was always present which was shaped to produce equivalent masked thresholds for all subjects. This minimized differences in speech audibility due to differences in quiet thresholds among subjects. An additional goal was to determine if age-related differences in benefit from modulation could be explained by differences in thresholds measured in simultaneous and forward maskers. Accordingly, thresholds for 350-ms pure tones were measured in quiet and in each masker; thresholds for 20-ms signals in forward and simultaneous masking were also measured at selected signal frequencies. To determine if benefit from modulated maskers varied with masker spectrum and to provide a comparison with previous studies, a subgroup of younger subjects also listened in steady-state and interrupted noise that was not spectrally shaped. Articulation index (AI) values were computed and speech-recognition scores were predicted for steady-state and interrupted noise; predicted benefit from modulation was also determined. Masked thresholds of older subjects were slightly higher than those of younger subjects; larger age-related threshold differences were observed for short-duration than for long-duration signals. In steady-state noise, speech recognition for older subjects was poorer than for younger subjects, which was partially attributable to older subjects' slightly higher thresholds in these maskers. In interrupted noise, although predicted benefit was larger for older than younger subjects, scores improved more for younger than for older subjects, particularly at the higher noise level. This may be related to age-related increases in thresholds in steady-state noise and in forward masking, especially at higher frequencies. Benefit of interrupted maskers was larger for unshaped than for speech-shaped noise, consistent with AI predictions. 相似文献

Binaural performance was measured as a function of stimulus frequency for four impaired listeners, each with bilaterally symmetric audiograms. The subjects had various degrees and configurations of audiometric losses: two had high-frequency, sensorineural losses; one had a flat sensorineural loss; and one had multiple sclerosis with normal audiometric thresholds. Just noticeable differences (jnd's) in interaural time, interaural intensity, and interaural correlation as well as detection thresholds for NoSo and NoS pi conditions were obtained for narrow-band noise stimuli at octave frequencies from 250-4000 Hz. Performance of the impaired listeners was generally poorer than that of normal-hearing listeners, although it was comparable to normal in a few instances. The patterns of binaural performance showed no apparent relation to the audiometric patterns; even the two subjects with similar degree and configuration of hearing loss have very different binaural performance, both in the level and frequency dependence of their performance. The frequency dependence of performance on individual tests is irregular enough that one cannot confidently interpolate between octaves. In addition, it appears that no subset of the measurements is adequate to characterize the performance in the rest of the measurements with the exception that, within limits, interaural correlation discrimination and NoS pi detection performance are related. 相似文献

Spectral peak resolution was investigated in normal hearing (NH), hearing impaired (HI), and cochlear implant (CI) listeners. The task involved discriminating between two rippled noise stimuli in which the frequency positions of the log-spaced peaks and valleys were interchanged. The ripple spacing was varied adaptively from 0.13 to 11.31 ripples/octave, and the minimum ripple spacing at which a reversal in peak and trough positions could be detected was determined as the spectral peak resolution threshold for each listener. Spectral peak resolution was best, on average, in NH listeners, poorest in CI listeners, and intermediate for HI listeners. There was a significant relationship between spectral peak resolution and both vowel and consonant recognition in quiet across the three listener groups. The results indicate that the degree of spectral peak resolution required for accurate vowel and consonant recognition in quiet backgrounds is around 4 ripples/octave, and that spectral peak resolution poorer than around 1-2 ripples/octave may result in highly degraded speech recognition. These results suggest that efforts to improve spectral peak resolution for HI and CI users may lead to improved speech recognition. 相似文献

The present study examined the application of the articulation index (AI) as a predictor of the speech-recognition performance of normal and hearing-impaired listeners with and without hearing protection. The speech-recognition scores of 12 normal and 12 hearing-impaired subjects were measured for a wide range of conditions designed to be representative of those in the workplace. Conditions included testing in quiet, in two types of background noise (white versus speech spectrum), at three signal-to-noise ratios (+ 5, 0, - 5 dB), and in three conditions of protection (unprotected, earplugs, earmuffs). The mean results for all 21 listening conditions and both groups of subjects were accurately described by the AI. Moreover, a single transfer-function relating performance to the AI could describe all the data from both groups. 相似文献

The difference in level required to match monaural and binaural loudness of 5- and 200-ms tones was measured for listeners with normal and impaired hearing. Stimuli were 1-kHz tones presented at levels ranging from 10 to 90 dB sensation level. Sixteen listeners (eight normal and eight with losses of primarily cochlear origin) made loudness matches between equal-duration monaural and binaural tones using an adaptive 2AFC procedure. The present results corroborate existing data for 200-ms tones in normal listeners and provide new data for 5-ms tones. On average, the binaural level difference required for equal loudness of monaural and binaural tones is about the same for 5- and 200-ms tones of equal level and changes as a function of level. The group data for normal and impaired listeners are in reasonable agreement with data in the literature. However, the data from some of the impaired listeners deviate markedly from the average, indicating that group data do not accurately represent the behavior of all impaired listeners. Derived loudness functions from the loudness-matching data are reasonably consistent with individual data in the literature. 相似文献

This study investigated the relationship between audibility and predictions of speech recognition for children and adults with normal hearing. The Speech Intelligibility Index (SII) is used to quantify the audibility of speech signals and can be applied to transfer functions to predict speech recognition scores. Although the SII is used clinically with children, relatively few studies have evaluated SII predictions of children's speech recognition directly. Children have required more audibility than adults to reach maximum levels of speech understanding in previous studies. Furthermore, children may require greater bandwidth than adults for optimal speech understanding, which could influence frequency-importance functions used to calculate the SII. Speech recognition was measured for 116 children and 19 adults with normal hearing. Stimulus bandwidth and background noise level were varied systematically in order to evaluate speech recognition as predicted by the SII and derive frequency-importance functions for children and adults. Results suggested that children required greater audibility to reach the same level of speech understanding as adults. However, differences in performance between adults and children did not vary across frequency bands. 相似文献

Forward- and simultaneous-masked thresholds were measured at 0.5 and 2.0 kHz in bandpass maskers as a function of masker bandwidth and in a broadband masker with the goal of estimating psychophysical suppression. Suppression was operationally defined in two ways: (1) as a change in forward-masked threshold as a function of masker bandwidth, and (2) as a change in effective masker level with increased masker bandwidth, taking into account the nonlinear growth of forward masking. Subjects were younger adults with normal hearing and older adults with cochlear hearing loss. Thresholds decreased as a function of masker bandwidth in forward masking, which was attributed to effects of suppression; thresholds remained constant or increased slightly with increasing masker bandwidth in simultaneous masking. For subjects with normal hearing, slightly larger estimates of suppression were obtained at 2.0 kHz rather than at 0.5 kHz. For hearing-impaired subjects, suppression was reduced in regions of hearing loss. The magnitude of suppression was strongly correlated with the absolute threshold at the signal frequency, but did not vary with thresholds at frequencies remote from the signal. The results suggest that measuring forward-masked thresholds in bandlimited and broadband maskers may be an efficient psychophysical method for estimating suppression. 相似文献

Effects of fluctuating noise and interfering speech on the speech-reception threshold for impaired and normal hearing 总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
The speech-reception threshold (SRT) for sentences presented in a fluctuating interfering background sound of 80 dBA SPL is measured for 20 normal-hearing listeners and 20 listeners with sensorineural hearing impairment. The interfering sounds range from steady-state noise, via modulated noise, to a single competing voice. Two voices are used, one male and one female, and the spectrum of the masker is shaped according to these voices. For both voices, the SRT is measured as well in noise spectrally shaped according to the target voice as shaped according to the other voice. The results show that, for normal-hearing listeners, the SRT for sentences in modulated noise is 4-6 dB lower than for steady-state noise; for sentences masked by a competing voice, this difference is 6-8 dB. For listeners with moderate sensorineural hearing loss, elevated thresholds are obtained without an appreciable effect of masker fluctuations. The implications of these results for estimating a hearing handicap in everyday conditions are discussed. By using the articulation index (AI), it is shown that hearing-impaired individuals perform poorer than suggested by the loss of audibility for some parts of the speech signal. Finally, three mechanisms are discussed that contribute to the absence of unmasking by masker fluctuations in hearing-impaired listeners. The low sensation level at which the impaired listeners receive the masker seems a major determinant. The second and third factors are: reduced temporal resolution and a reduction in comodulation masking release, respectively. 相似文献

Annoyance ratings in speech intelligibility tests at 45 dB(A) and 55 dB(A) traffic noise were investigated in a laboratory study. Subjects were chosen according to their hearing acuity to be representative of 70-year-old men and women, and of noise-induced hearing losses typical for a great number of industrial workers. These groups were compared with normal hearing subjects of the same sex and, when possible, the same age. The subjects rated their annoyance on an open 100 mm scale. Significant correlations were found between annoyance expressed in millimetres and speech intelligibility in percent when all subjects were taken as one sample. Speech intelligibility was also calculated from physical measurements of speech and noise by using the articulation index method. Observed and calculated speech intelligibility scores are compared and discussed. Also treated is the estimation of annoyance by traffic noise at moderate noise levels via speech intelligibility scores. 相似文献

A group of prelinguistically hearing impaired children, between 7 and 11 years of age, were trained in the perception of vowel duration and place, the fricative /s/, and manner of articulation (/m/ vs /b/ and /s/ vs /t/) distinctions, using information provided by a multiple-channel electrotactile aid (Tickle Talker), and through aided hearing. Training was provided in the tactile-plus-aided hearing (TA) and tactile (T) conditions. Speech feature recognition tests were conducted in the TA, T, and aided hearing (A) conditions, during pretraining, training, and post-training phases. Test scores in the TA and T conditions were significantly greater than scores in the A condition for all tests, suggesting that perception of these features was improved when the tactile aid was worn. Test scores in the training and post-training phases were significantly greater than in the pretraining phase, suggesting that the training provided was responsible for the improvement in feature perception. Statistical analyses demonstrated a significant interaction between the main effects of condition and phase, suggesting that training improved perception in the TA and T conditions, but not in the A condition. Post-training and training test scores were similar suggesting that the perceptual skills acquired during training were retained after the removal of training. Recognition of trained features improved for trained, as well as for untrained words. 相似文献

This study assessed the effects of binaural spectral resolution mismatch on the intelligibility of Mandarin speech in noise using bilateral cochlear implant simulations. Noise-vocoded Mandarin speech, corrupted by speech-shaped noise at 0 and 5?dB signal-to-noise ratios, were presented unilaterally or bilaterally to normal-hearing listeners with mismatched spectral resolution between ears. Significant binaural benefits for Mandarin speech recognition were observed only with matched spectral resolution between ears. In addition, the performance of tone identification was more robust to noise than that of sentence recognition, suggesting factors other than tone identification might account more for the degraded sentence recognition in noise. 相似文献

Most information in speech is carried in spectral changes over time, rather than in static spectral shape per se. A form of signal processing aimed at enhancing spectral changes over time was developed and evaluated using hearing-impaired listeners. The signal processing was based on the overlap-add method, and the degree and type of enhancement could be manipulated via four parameters. Two experiments were conducted to assess speech intelligibility and clarity preferences. Three sets of parameter values (one corresponding to a control condition), two types of masker (steady speech-spectrum noise and two-talker speech) and two signal-to-masker ratios (SMRs) were used for each masker type. Generally, the effects of the processing were small, although intelligibility was improved by about 8 percentage points relative to the control condition for one set of parameter values using the steady noise masker at -6 dB SMR. The processed signals were not preferred over those for the control condition, except for the steady noise masker at -6 dB SMR. Further work is needed to determine whether tailoring the processing to the characteristics of the individual hearing-impaired listener is beneficial. 相似文献

The onset-time difference delta T required to lateralize a 30-ms bifrequency tone burst toward the leading ear was measured as a function of the frequency difference delta F between the tone in the left ear and the tone in the right ear. At center frequencies of 0.5 and 4 kHz, four normal listeners tested at 80 and 100 dB SPL had delta Ts that were relatively constant at subcritical delta Fs, but increased at delta Fs wider than a critical band. At 1 kHz, delta T increased with delta F even at subcritical delta Fs. Ten listeners with cochlear impairments were tested at 100 dB SPL. Seven had normal delta Ts at 4 kHz, despite hearing losses between 50 and 70 dB. At 0.5 and 1 kHz, mildly impaired listeners had nearly normal lateralization functions, whereas more severely imparied listeners had very large delta Ts and no frequency selectivity. These and other findings indicate that listeners even with moderate to severe hearing losses can lateralize normally on the basis of interaural differences in onset envelope, but not on the basis of temporal differences in the fine structure. 相似文献

The effect of perceived spatial differences on masking release was examined using a 4AFC speech detection paradigm. Targets were 20 words produced by a female talker. Maskers were recordings of continuous streams of nonsense sentences spoken by two female talkers and mixed into each of two channels (two talker, and the same masker time reversed). Two masker spatial conditions were employed: "RF" with a 4 ms time lead to the loudspeaker 60 degrees horizontally to the right, and "FR" with the time lead to the front (0 degrees ) loudspeaker. The reference nonspatial "F" masker was presented from the front loudspeaker only. Target presentation was always from the front loudspeaker. In Experiment 1, target detection threshold for both natural and time-reversed spatial maskers was 17-20 dB lower than that for the nonspatial masker, suggesting that significant release from informational masking occurs with spatial speech maskers regardless of masker understandability. In Experiment 2, the effectiveness of the FR and RF maskers was evaluated as the right loudspeaker output was attenuated until the two-source maskers were indistinguishable from the F masker, as measured independently in a discrimination task. Results indicated that spatial release from masking can be observed with barely noticeable target-masker spatial differences. 相似文献

Using an adaptive strategy, the effects of mild sensorineural hearing loss and adult listeners' chronological age on speech recognition in babble were evaluated. The signal-to-babble ratio required to achieve 50% recognition was measured for three speech materials presented at soft to loud conversational speech levels. Four groups of subjects were tested: (1) normal-hearing listeners less than 44 years of age, (2) subjects less than 44 years old with mild sensorineural hearing loss and excellent speech recognition in quiet, (3) normal-hearing listeners greater than 65 with normal hearing, and (4) subjects greater than 65 years old with mild hearing loss and excellent performance in quiet. Groups 1 and 3, and groups 2 and 4 were matched on the basis of pure-tone thresholds, and thresholds for each of the three speech materials presented in quiet. In addition, groups 1 and 2 were similar in terms of mean age and age range, as were groups 3 and 4. Differences in performance in noise as a function of age were observed for both normal-hearing and hearing-impaired listeners despite equivalent performance in quiet. Subjects with mild hearing loss performed significantly worse than their normal-hearing counterparts. These results and their implications are discussed. 相似文献

Some individuals complain of hearing difficulties in the presence of background noise even in the absence of clinically significant hearing loss (obscure auditory dysfunction). Previous evidence suggests that these listeners have impaired frequency resolution, but there has been no thorough characterization of auditory filter shapes in this population. Here, the filter shapes of adults (n = 14) who self-reported speech recognition problems in noise and performed poorly on a sentence-in-noise perception test despite having clinically normal audiograms were compared to those of controls (n = 10). The filter shapes were evaluated using a 2-kHz probe with a fixed level of 30, 40, or 50 dB sound pressure level (SPL) and notched-noise simultaneous maskers that were varied in level to determine the masker level necessary to just mask the probe. The filters of the impaired group were significantly wider than those of controls at all probe levels owing to an unusual broadening of the upper slope of the filter. In addition, absolute thresholds were statistically indistinguishable between the groups at the standard audiometric frequencies, but were elevated in the impaired listeners at higher frequencies. These results strengthen the idea that this population has a variety of hearing deficits that go undetected by standard audiometry. 相似文献

This study assessed normal frequency discrimination ability in the chinchilla and determined how this ability changes as a function of an experimentally induced sensorineural hearing loss. Four chinchillas were trained by the methods of positive reinforcement to report absolute thresholds and frequency difference limens (FDLs). Subjects were then treated with the aminoglycosidic antibiotic amikacin until a 30-dB hearing loss was measured at 10.0 kHz. Absolute and frequency difference thresholds were determined during and after drug treatment. When post-drug thresholds had stabilized, subjects were sacrificed and their cochleas stained, embedded in plastic, microdissected, and viewed with phase contrast microscopy to permit examination of the cochlear tissue. Post-drug data suggest that frequency discrimination at a high frequency is unaffected by a 40- to 45-dB sensorineural hearing loss, considerable hair cell damage, and the resultant disruption of the cochlear micromechanics. The data, in concert with previously published reports, suggest that FDLs may be less affected by a high-frequency sensorineural hearing loss than by a low-frequency sensorineural hearing loss. 相似文献

Individual and group loudness relations were obtained at a frequency in the region of impaired hearing for 100 people, 98 with bilateral cochlear impairment. Slope distributions were determined from absolute magnitude estimation (AME) and absolute magnitude production (AMP) of loudness; they were also derived from cross-modality matching (CMM) and AME of apparent length. With respect to both the means and the individual slope values, the two distributions closely agree. More than half of the measured deviations are less than 20%, with an overall average of -1.5%, meaning that transitivity is preserved for bilaterally impaired individuals. Moreover, over the stimulus range where cochlear impairment steepens the loudness function, both the group means and the individual slope values are clearly larger than in normal hearing. The results also show that, for groups of people with approximately similar losses, the standard deviation is a nearly constant proportion of the mean slope value giving a coefficient of variation of about 27% in normal and impaired hearing. This indicates, in accord with loudness matching, that the size of the slopes depends directly on the degree of hearing loss. The results disclose that loudness measurements obtained by magnitude scaling are able to reveal the operating characteristic of the ear for individuals. 相似文献

This study demonstrates a new possibility of estimating intelligibility of speech in informational maskers. The temporal and spectral properties of sound maskers are investigated to achieve acoustic privacy in public spaces. Speech intelligibility (SI) tests were conducted using Japanese sentences in daily use for energy (white noise) or informational (reversed speech) maskers. We found that the masking effects including informational masking on SI might not be estimated by analyzing the narrow-band temporal envelopes, which is a common way of predicting SI under noisy conditions. The masking effects might instead be visualized by spectral auto-correlation analysis on a frame-by-frame basis, for the series of dominant-spectral peaks of the masked target in the frequency domain. Consequently, we found that dissimilarity in frame-based spectral-auto-correlation sequences between the original and masked targets was the key to evaluating maskers including informational masking effects on SI. 相似文献
