Torus actions,fixed-point formulas,elliptic genera and positive curvature

We study fixed points of smooth torus actions on closed manifolds using fixed point formulas and equivariant elliptic genera. We also give applications to positively curved Riemannian manifolds with symmetry.     

On the rigidity theorem for elliptic genera

We give a detailed proof of the rigidity theorem for elliptic genera. Using the Lefschetz fixed point formula we carefully analyze the relation between the characteristic power series defining the elliptic genera and the equivariant elliptic genera. We show that equivariant elliptic genera converge to Jacobi functions which are holomorphic. This implies the rigidity of elliptic genera. Our approach can be easily modified to give a proof of the rigidity theorem for the elliptic genera of level .

     

Estimates for Green's matrices of elliptic systems byL p theory

Summary We prove existence and optimal decay properties of a Green's matrix for elliptic systems of second order. The results follow from regularity theorems in weak Lebesgue spaces which can be obtained from the classicalL ^p theory using interpolation theorems. Rigidity and flexibility of virtual polytopes

All 3-dimensional convex polytopes are known to be rigid. Still their Minkowski differences (virtual polytopes) can be flexible with any finite freedom degree. We derive some sufficient rigidity conditions for virtual polytopes and present some examples of flexible ones. For example, Bricard's first and second flexible octahedra can be supplied by the structure of a virtual polytope.     

Inequalities and bounds for elliptic integrals

Computable lower and upper bounds for the symmetric elliptic integrals and for Legendre's incomplete integral of the first kind are obtained. New bounds are sharper than those known earlier. Several inequalities involving integrals under discussion are derived.     

Bounds for symmetric elliptic integrals

Lower and upper bounds for the four standard incomplete symmetric elliptic integrals are obtained. The bounding functions are expressed in terms of the elementary transcendental functions. Sharp bounds for the ratio of the complete elliptic integrals of the second kind and the first kind are also derived. These results can be used to obtain bounds for the product of these integrals. It is shown that an iterative numerical algorithm for computing the ratios and products of complete integrals has the second order of convergence.     

Rigidity of spheres in Riemannian manifolds and a non-embedding theorem

Letf:M be an isometric immersion between Riemannian manifolds. The purpose of this paper is to find the minimum possible conditions onM and (in the terms of curvatures and external diameter) in order to the image off be contained in a sphere. Our results generalize the other authors work in three major steps, domain, range and the codimension of immersions. As a byproduct, we obtain the non-embedding theorems Chern-Kuiper, Moore and Jacobowitz. The proofs are based on the maximum (comparison) principle.The author was supported by FAPEMIG Grant CEX-946/98.     

A higher integrability result for nondivergence elliptic equations

The aim of this paper is to establish a higher integrability result of the second derivatives of solutions to nondivergence elliptic equations of the type . We assume that the coefficients a _ij are bounded and have small BMO-norm.

Elliptic genera of homogeneous spin manifolds and theta functions identities

By Witten rigidity theorem and the Atiyah-Bott-Segal-Singer Lefschetz fixed point formula, the elliptic genus of a homogeneous spin manifold G/H can be expressed as a sum of theta functions quotients over the Weyl group of G. Consequently, we obtain several classes of combinatorial identities of theta functions.     

The information matrix,skewness tensor and a-connections for the general multivariate elliptic distribution

Expressions for the entries of the information matrix and skewness tensor of a general multivariate elliptic distribution are obtained. From these the coefficients of the a-connections are derived. A general expression for the asymptotic efficiency of the sample mean, when appropriate as an estimator of the location parameter, is obtained. The results are illustrated by examples from the multivariate normal, Cauchy and Student's t-distributions.     

Regular boundary value problems for complete second order elliptic differential-operator equations in UMD Banach spaces

We consider coerciveness and Fredholmness of nonlocal boundary value problems for complete second order elliptic differential-operator equations in UMD Banach spaces. In some special cases, the main coefficients of the boundary conditions may be bounded operators and not only complex numbers. Then, we prove an isomorphism, in particular, maximal L _p -regularity, of the problem with a linear parameter in the equation. In both cases, the boundary conditions may also contain unbounded operators in perturbation terms. Finally, application to regular nonlocal boundary value problems for elliptic equations of the second order in non-smooth domains are presented. Equations and boundary conditions may contain differential-integral parts. The spaces of solvability are Sobolev type spaces W _p,q ^2,2. An extension of Takahashi theorem for the linearized operators of the higher order mean curvatures

We study hypersurfaces in Euclidean space whose position vector x satisfies the condition L _k x = Ax + b, where L _k is the linearized operator of the (k + 1)th mean curvature of the hypersurface for a fixed , is a constant matrix and is a constant vector. For every k, we prove that the only hypersurfaces satisfying that condition are hypersurfaces with zero (k + 1)th mean curvature and open pieces of round hyperspheres and generalized right spherical cylinders of the form , with . This extends a previous classification for hypersurfaces in satisfying , where is the Laplacian operator of the hypersurface, given independently by Hasanis and Vlachos [J. Austral. Math. Soc. Ser. A 53, 377–384 (1991) and Chen and Petrovic [Bull. Austral. Math. Soc. 44, 117–129 (1991)].      

Bolzano’s intermediate-value theorem for quasi-holomorphic maps

We extend Bolzano’s intermediate-value theorem to quasi-holomorphic maps of the space of continuous linear functionals from l _p into the scalar field, (0< p<1). This space is isomorphic to l _∞.     

A global differentiability result for solutions of nonlinear elliptic problems with controlled growths

The Rigidity of Hypersurfaces in Euclidean Space

In the present paper, the rigidity of hypersurfaces in Euclideanspace is revisited. The Darboux equation is highlighted and two newproofs of the rigidity are given via energy method and maximalprinciple, respectively.     

<Emphasis Type="Italic">K</Emphasis>-subanalytic rectilinearization and uniformization

We prove rectilinearization and uniformization theorems for K-subanalytic (∝ _an ^K -definable) sets and functions using the Lion-Rolin formula. Parallel reasoning gives standard results for the subanalytic case.     

On higher order geometry on anchored vector bundles

Some geometric objects of higher order concerning extensions, semi-sprays, connections and Lagrange metrics are constructed using an anchored vector bundle. The paper was partially supported by a 2005 MEC-CNCSIS grant.
