Ultrahigh-efficiency TEM00 operation is demonstrated in a diode-pumped Nd:YVO4 laser in a bounce amplifier geometry using a specially designed astigmatically optimised cavity configuration. Optical efficiency >68% is demonstrated and up to 27.1 W of output power for multimode operation. For single-mode TEM00 operation, an output power of 23.1 W for 39.5 W of diode pumping was produced with beam propagation parameters of Mx 2=1.3 and My 2=1.1. A synchronously pumped femtosecond optical parametric oscillator based on congruent MgO-doped periodically poled lithium niobate (c-MgO:PPLN) is reported. The system, operating at room temperature, was pumped by a mode-locked Ti:sapphire laser. The wavelengths of the signal and idler waves were tuned from 870 nm to 1.54 μm and 1.58 to 5.67 μm, respectively, by changing the pump wavelength, the grating period or the cavity length. Pumped by 1.1 W of 755 nm laser radiation, the OPO generated 310 mW of 1080 nm radiation. This signal output corresponds to a total conversion efficiency of 50%. Without dispersion compensation the OPO generated phase-modulated signal pulses of 200 fs duration. Besides the OPO of c-MgO:PPLN, an OPO of stoichiometric (s) MgO:PPLN was investigated. Because of the reduced sensitivity to photorefractive damage, both crystals allowed efficient OPO operation at room temperature. We describe a 7.4-μm source based on difference frequency generation with 6.5 mW of 1278-nm radiation from an extended cavity laser and 66 mW of 1544-nm radiation from another extended cavity laser, amplified in an erbium-doped fibre amplifier. Optimum focusing of the input beams in the 5×5×10-mm3 AgGaSe2 crystal, and the spatial and temporal characteristics of the output beam, are determined. The source is used for accurate determination of line parameters for selected lines of the ν3 band of SO2, centred at 1361 cm-1. Subsequently, these lines are used for performing quantitative analysis of gas mixtures containing SO2 at concentration levels down to 4 ppm without relying on any calibration with certified gas mixtures. This demonstrates the potential of infrared spectroscopy as a primary method for low-concentration gas analysis. A 2.2-W continuous-wave, continuously tunable, single-frequency OPO has been developed in the 3.0–3.8 μm wavelength range for the detection of molecular trace gasses. The oscillation threshold, output power and stability of the single resonant OPO were improved by optimizing pump beam waist and OPO cavity length. Both air-spaced and solid etalons were tested to frequency stabilize and tune the OPO, from which the solid etalon gave a better performance. Temperature oscillations in the PPLN crystal caused oscillations in the idler wavelength of less than 200 MHz over 300 s; the short-term stability was less than 3 MHz over 1 s. The high laser power, in combination with photoacoustic spectroscopy, achieved a detection limit of 10 parts-per-trillion for ethane in nitrogen. The analysis of compact CW diode-side-pumped grazing-incidence-geometry Nd:YVO4 laser designs is presented. An output power of 5 W (λ=1064 nm) was produced at 17 W of diode pump (conversion efficiency of 30%) in single transverse TEM00 mode operation at high laser beam quality (Mx 2≈1.05 and My 2≈1.01). The resonator geometry was analyzed by applying generalized 4×4 matrix modeling of the spatial mode size, including the impact on the laser operation of cavity astigmatism and a thermal lens in the laser slab. The simplicity and compactness of the laser cavities allow their use for technological applications. Received: 31 July 2002 / Published online: 22 January 2003 RID="*" ID="*"Corresponding author. Twin-beam fluctuations are analyzed for detuned and mismatched OPO configurations. Resonances and frequency responses to the quantum noise sources (quantum and pump amplitude/phase fluctuations) are examined as functions of cavity decay rates, excitation parameters and detuning. The dependence of self- and mutual correlations of beam amplitudes and phases on detuning, mismatch and damping parameters is discussed. We report on a numerical analysis of the temporal and spatial beam properties of nanosecond optical parametric oscillators (OPOs). The analysis is performed for a 355-nm-pumped critically phase-matched OPO of beta-barium borate. The calculations provide detailed information on the dependence of the OPO beam quality (measured by the quality factor M 2) on pump energy. An important result is the strong increase of the M 2 value for pump energies exceeding 1–2 times the energy at threshold. Furthermore, a temporal analysis of single OPO pulses indicates that the M 2 value strongly increases during the first few nanoseconds of the OPO oscillation. This increase is understood by considering the temporal dynamics of the spatial profiles of the OPO signal beam and the depleted pump radiation. A high-repetition-rate eye-safe optical parametric oscillator (OPO), using a non-critically phase-matched KTP crystal intracavity pumped by an acousto-optically (AO) Q-switchedNd:YVO4 laser, is experimentally demonstrated. It is found that the average OPO signal power at 1573 nm can be efficiently increased by increasing the pulse repetition rate. Moreover, the intracavity OPO process effectively shortens the pulse width so that it is in the range 5∼8 ns for pulse repetition rates of 10 to 80 kHz. As a result of the relatively short pulse, the peak power at 1573 nm is higher than 2 kW at a pulse repetition rate of 80 kHz. Polarization-dependent spatial beam profiles of femtosecond X-ray pulses generated by a laser Compton scheme were measured. The X-ray pulses were generated by the interaction at an angle of 90° between 100-fs laser light and a 3-ps, 3π-mm mrad electron beam. The polarization of the laser light was linear in two different directions, either parallel or perpendicular to the electron beam axis. The measured profiles showed good agreement with theoretical results. Received: 5 July 2002 / Revised version: 17 October 2002 / Published online: 5 February 2003 RID="*" ID="*"Corresponding author. We report stable self-starting near-transform-limited 26-fs pulses at 250-mW output power from a Kerr-lens mode-locked (KLM) Cr4+:YAG laser using chirped mirrors in combination with prisms. The highest output power achieved in KLM regime was 600 mW at 55-fs pulse duration. The experimental results agree well with the results of theoretical analysis with respect to KLM self-starting ability and stability against continuous-wave and multi-pulse operation. Parameter ranges for stable transform-limited KLM pulses as well as the shortest achievable pulse durations are established. Using an InGaAs-InP semiconductor saturable absorber mirror we could obtain self-starting 57-fs pulses at the average output power of 200 mW. Two-photon absorption was found to be the main mechanism favoring the multiple-pulse operation. The influence of the pump intensity profile on the performance of a mid-IR ZGP RISTRA OPO at 6.45???m is studied for a flat-top pump profile and compared to a Gaussian pump distribution at the same pump peak fluence of 0.81?J/cm2. Due to a coherent beam transformation a flat-top pump beam with a plane wavefront and excellent beam quality of M 2??1.25 is generated. The output of up to 5?mJ pulse idler energy (0.5?W average idler power) is identical in both cases, showing that flat-top pumping allows a reduction of the OPO crystal volume by 55?% while still maintaining a good output beam quality of M 2<2.7 for the idler and M 2<2.5 for the signal. The experimental results are compared to the SNLO RISTRA model and the limitations of the model are discussed.  相似文献

An ultra-short-pumped optical dye amplifier operating in the near-IR (720 nm) has been developed. We present an experimental study of the input–output characteristics of this simple device in a traveling wave collinear configuration. In essence, the combined effects of the ultrafast nature of the anisotropy induced by the exciting laser pulse along with the short transit time across the length of the cell allow for optimal output conditions given the number of molecules in the active volume. Two distinct amplifying regimes have been observed depending on photon density. Typical gain values of 104 of the narrow bandwidth (∼9 nm) subpicosecond output signal were measured. The 8-mm2 beam cross section enables this photon amplifier to be utilized in time-gated imaging applications. All-optical switching and beam deflection of 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl) benzoxazole (HBO) in three species of solvent (cyclohexane, ethanol and dimethyl sulfoxide) have been investigated by using third-harmonic generation (355 nm) of a mode-locked Nd:YAG laser as a pump beam and a continuous-wave He-Ne laser (632.8 nm) as a probe beam. The nonlinear refractive indices of HBO in different solvents are determined by using the Z-scan technique. The optical switching and beam-deflection effects are due to the change of the refractive index of HBO under the pump beam. Through the study of the absorption spectra and the fluorescence spectra of HBO in different solvents, we conclude that the principal reason for the change of the refractive index of HBO is not the thermal effect because of absorption of the pump beam, but the excited-state intramolecular proton-transfer (ESIPT) effect of HBO under the pump beam. As the ESIPT process is very fast, HBO might be an excellent material for high-speed optical switching. A pulsed optical parametric oscillator (OPO) operated in an optical cavity with a grazing-incidence grating configuration (GIOPO) was used for sensitive photoacoustic detection of trace quantities of dinitrogen oxide (N2O). The (ν13) combination vibration band of N2O was excited with the idler beam of the GIOPO at 2.86 μm using an optical cavity optimized for the idler beam. The linewidth of the GIOPO could be reduced to 0.4 cm-1, allowing the rotational structure of the absorption spectrum to be resolved. A concentration sensitivity (signal-to-noise ratio=3) of 60 parts in 109 by volume (60 ppb V) N2O in synthetic air was obtained. This may be sufficient for continuous monitoring of N2O in the atmosphere. Hybrid laser processing for the precision microfabrication of glass materials, in which the interaction of a conventional pulsed laser beam and a medium on the material surface leads to effective ablation and modification, is reviewed. A major role of the medium is to produce strong absorption of the conventional laser beam by the material. Simultaneous irradiation by a vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) laser beam that possesses an extremely small laser fluence and an ultraviolet (UV) laser greatly improves the ablation quality and modification efficiency for fused silica (VUV-UV multiwavelength excitation process). The metal plasma generated by the laser beam effectively assists high-quality ablation of transparent materials by the same laser beam, resulting in microstructuring, cutting, color marking, printing, and selective metallization of glass materials (laser-induced plasma-assisted ablation (LIPAA)). The detailed discussion presented here includes the ablation mechanism of hybrid laser processing. A 50 cm silver coated hollow fiber with inner diameter of 250 μm and filled with argon has been used to compress optical pulses from a Ti:sapphire laser at 800 nm. Input pulses with energy of 250 μJ and duration of 110 fs were used and compressed pulses with energy of 220 μJ and duration of 20 fs were generated by using a prism compressor. Numerical and experimental results are compared. There is good agreement between the measured beam diameters of the hollow-fiber output pulse and the calculated values obtained from propagation of the HE11 mode into free space. For comparison, a similar uncoated fused-silica hollow fiber was also used to obtain 20 fs compressed pulses with an energy of 190 μJ. We describe the measurement of the line width of an atom laser beam extracted from a Bose–Einstein condensate. Using a novel magnetic resonance imaging technique, we find that the energy width of the atom laser beam is Fourier-limited by the duration of the output-coupling process. We report on a passively Q-switched diode-pumped Nd:YVO4 laser polarized along the a axis (corresponding to the smallest value of emission cross section at 1064 nm), generating 157-μJ pulses with 6.0-ns time duration (>20 kW peak power) and 3.6 W of average power at 1064 nm with good beam quality (M2<1.4). The selection of the polarization was performed by a novel technique relying on the birefringence of the laser crystal and on the misalignment sensitivity of the resonator. This paper reports on the experimental investigation and the numerical simulation of the spatio-temporal dynamics of the pulse formation in nanosecond optical parametric oscillators. The temporal evolution of the spatial intensity distribution is measured with a fast two-dimensional CCD-camera. The measurements are performed for a signal-resonant nanosecond pulsed optical-parametric-oscillator (OPO) which consists of a 12 mm long, critically phase-matched beta-barium-borate (BBO)-crystal in a 40 mm long cavity of two plane mirrors. The OPO was pumped by the third harmonic of a flashlamp-pumped Nd:YAG-Laser at a repetition rate of 10 Hz. At pump energies close to the OPO threshold the emitted OPO-radiation has an almost gaussian intensity distribution throughout the entire pulse. The beam quality factor M2 remains below 2.2. At high pump energies the OPO oscillation also starts with an almost gaussian beam-profile. During the build-up and parametric amplification of the pulse the fields experience, however, a spatially inhomogeneous gain, caused by walk-off in the birefringent crystal, pump-depletion, and back-conversion. The spatial intensity distribution thus becomes asymmetric and the M2 value increases. The measurements are compared with the results of detailed numerical calculations. The model takes the amplification of the OPO-radiation in the nonlinear crystal, and the properties of the OPO cavity as well as the diffraction of the beams during propagation into account. The spatio-temporal dynamics of the pulse formation predicted by the numerical model are in good agreement with the experimental results. PACS 42.65.Sf; 42.65.Yj  相似文献
