Using a combination of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and density functional theory calculations, we have studied the adsorption of tetracene on the Cu(1 1 0) (2 × 1)O substrate. At monolayer coverage the adsorbed molecules are in the flat-laying geometry with their long axis along the close-packed [0 0 1] direction of the substrate and a long-range ordered structure on the length scale up to 100 nm has been observed. DFT calculation results indicate a stronger interaction between tetracene molecules and Cu(1 1 0) substrate than Cu(1 1 0) (2 × 1)O substrate. The preferential adsorption sites have also been pointed out on both substrates. The observed wavelike structure is explained by the interdigitation of C-H bonds of adjacent molecules.  相似文献

Au island nucleation and growth on a Si(1 1 1) 7 × 7 vicinal surface was studied by means of scanning tunneling microscopy. The surface was prepared to have a regular array of step bunches. Growth temperature and Au coverage were varied in the 255-430 °C substrate temperature range and from 1 to 7 monolayers, respectively. Two kinds of islands are observed on the surface: Au-Si reconstructed islands on the terraces and three-dimensional (3D) islands along the step bunches. Focusing on the latter, the dependence of island density, size and position on substrate temperature and on Au coverage is investigated. At 340 °C and above, hemispherical 3D islands nucleate systematically on the step edges.  相似文献

We have used scanning tunneling microscopy and low-energy electron microscopy to measure the thermal decay of two-dimensional Cu, Pb-overlayer, and Pb-Cu alloy islands on Pb-Cu(1 1 1) surface alloys. Decay rates covering 6-7 orders of magnitude are accessible by applying the two techniques to the same system. We find that Cu adatom diffusion across the surface alloy is rate-limiting for the decay of both Pb and Pb-Cu islands on the surface alloy and that this rate decreases monotonically with increasing Pb concentration in the alloy. The decrease is attributed to repulsive interactions between Cu adatoms and embedded Pb atoms in the surface alloy. The measured temperature dependences of island decay rates are consistent with first-principles calculations of the Cu binding and diffusion energies related to this “site-blocking” effect.  相似文献

Two different growth modes of manganese silicide are observed on Si(1 0 0) with scanning tunneling microscopy. 1.0 and 1.5 monolayer Mn are deposited at room temperature on the Si(1 0 0)-(2 × 1) substrate. The as-grown Mn film is unstructured. Annealing temperatures between room temperature and 450 °C lead to small unstructured clusters of Mn or MnxSiy. Upon annealing at 450 °C and 480 °C, Mn reacts chemically with the Si substrate and forms silicide islands. The dimer rows of the substrate become visible again. Two distinct island shapes are found and identified as MnSi and Mn5Si3.  相似文献

Formation of the platinum silicides nanostructures and their electronic properties have been studied using scanning tunneling microscopy and scanning tunneling spectroscopy. The investigated structures have been grown by solid state epitaxy upon deposition of the Si atoms (coverage about 0.2 ML) and sequential annealing at temperature range 600-1170 K. The formation of the Pt2Si and PtSi islands was investigated until the Si atoms embedded into the Pt substrate at the 1170 K. The images of the silicides structures and Pt substrates with atomic resolution have been recorded. The evolution of the spectroscopic curves both for substrates and nanostructures, corresponding to the structural and sizes changes, have been shown.  相似文献

The electronic structure of Si(1 1 1)-(6 × 6)Au surface covered with submonolayer amount of Pb is investigated using scanning tunneling spectroscopy. Already in small islands of Pb with thickness of 1 ML Pb(1 1 1) and with the diameter of only about 2 nm we detected the quantized electronic state with energy 0.55 eV below the Fermi level. Similarly, the I(V) characteristics made for the Si(1 1 1)-(6 × 6)Au surface reveal a localized energy state 0.3 eV below the Fermi level. These energies result from fitting of the theoretical curves to the experimental data. The calculations are based on tight binding Hubbard model. The theoretical calculations clearly show prominent modification of the I(V) curve due to variation of electronic and topographic properties of the STM tip apex.  相似文献

The surface atomic structure of Bi on Au(1 1 1) is studied with scanning tunneling microscopy. At about 0.5 monolayer of Bi, a well-ordered 6 × 6 atomic structure is observed. The structure has three notable features: corner holes, Bi adatoms, and stacking faults, very similar to a semiconductor surface of Si(1 1 1)-7 × 7. Out of 18 Bi surface atoms in a unit cell, six atoms are at hollow sites and are adatoms, and another six atoms are near-bridge sites. The last six atoms surround corner holes and are lower than other surface atoms by about 0.2 Å. A possible atomic model is proposed based on our observation.  相似文献

We have studied the room-temperature growth of Cr on Ir(1 1 1) by scanning tunneling microscopy. Even in the low-coverage regime, up to a total coverage of 2 monolayers (ML), Cr does not grow in the layer-by-layer mode. Instead, we observe islands with local coverages Θ between 1 ML and 5 ML. While the 1st layer growth is pseudomorphic, sporadic defect lines are observed in the 2nd layer. For Θ ? 3 ML periodic one-dimensional dislocation lines appear indicating the onset of strain relief. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy reveals that islands with Θ = 1 ML exist in two modifications. Though their tunneling spectra are qualitatively rather similar, direct comparison shows that the main peak is shifted by about 15 mV, resulting in peak positions of −0.255 V and −0.270 V. We interpret these two modifications as regular fcc Cr and Cr which exhibits a faulted hcp stacking on Ir(1 1 1), respectively. The assignment of fcc to areas directly attached to substrate steps together with the evolution of the ratio of the different ML-areas with coverage leads to the conclusion that hcp is the more favorable stacking.  相似文献

The deposition of ultrathin Fe films on the Mo(1 1 0) surface at elevated temperatures results in the formation of distinctive nanowedge islands. The model of island formation presented in this work is based on both experiment and DFT calculations of Fe adatom hopping barriers. Also, a number of classical molecular dynamics simulations were carried out to illustrate fragments of the model. The islands are formed during a transition from a nanostripe morphology at around 2 ML coverage through a Bales-Zangwill type instability. Islands nucleate when the meandering step fronts are sufficiently roughened to produce a substantial overlap between adjacent steps. The islands propagate along the substrate [0 0 1] direction due to anisotropic diffusion/capture processes along the island edges. It was found that the substrate steps limit adatom diffusion and provide heterogeneous nucleation sites, resulting in a higher density of islands on a vicinal surface. As the islands can be several layers thick at their thinnest end, we propose that adatoms entering the islands undertake a so-called “vertical climb” along the sides of the island. This is facilitated by the presence of mismatch-induced dislocations that thread to the sides of the islands and produce local maxima of compressive strain. Dislocation lines also trigger initial nucleation on the surface with 2-3 ML Fe coverage. The sides of the nanowedge islands typically form along low-index crystallographic directions but can also form along dislocation lines or the substrate miscut direction.  相似文献

Tunneling electrons in a scanning tunneling microscope were used to excite specific vibrational quantum states of adsorbed water and hydroxyl molecules on a Ru(0 0 0 1) surface. The excited molecules relaxed by transfer of energy to lower energy modes, resulting in diffusion, dissociation, desorption, and surface-tip transfer processes. Diffusion of H2O molecules could be induced by excitation of the O-H stretch vibration mode at 445 meV. Isolated molecules required excitation of one single quantum while molecules bonded to a C atom required at least two quanta. Dissociation of single H2O molecules into H and OH required electron energies of 1 eV or higher while dissociation of OH required at least 2 eV electrons. In contrast, water molecules forming part of a cluster could be dissociated with electron energies of 0.5 eV.  相似文献

Growth behavior of thin Ag films on Si substrates at room temperature has been investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy and reflection high energy electron diffraction. In the layer-plus-island growth Ag islands show strongly preferred atomic scale heights and flat top. At low coverage (1 ML), islands containing two atomic layers of Ag are overwhelmingly formed. At higher coverages island height distribution shows strong peaks at relative heights corresponding to an even number (2, 4, 6, …) of Ag atomic layers. Beyond some coverage the height preference vanishes due to the appearance of screw dislocations and spiral growth.  相似文献

We investigated desorption of chlorine atoms on Si (1 1 1)-(7 × 7) surfaces induced by hole injection from scanning tunneling microscope tips. The hole-induced desorption of chlorine atoms had a threshold bias voltage corresponding to the energy position of the S3 surface band originated in Si backbonds. The chlorine atom desorption rate was almost proportional to the square of the tunneling current. We have discussed possible mechanisms that two holes injected into Si surface states get localized at the backbonds of chlorinated Si adatoms, which induces the rupture of Cl-Si bonds to result in chlorine atom desorption.  相似文献

We present the results of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and photoemission spectroscopy (PES) of the Ta/Si(1 1 1)-7 × 7 system after deposition of Ta at substrate temperatures from 300 to 1250 K. The coverage of Ta varied from 0.05 up to 2.5 of a monolayer (ML). STM shows that at 300 K and coverage less than 1 ML, a disordered chemisorbed phase is formed. Deposition on a hot surface (above 500 K) produces round 3D clusters randomly distributed on the surface. Cluster height and their diameter are found to change drastically with annealing temperature and the Ta coverage. Analysis of photoemission data of the Si 2p core levels shows that at room temperature and at coverage ?1 ML core level binding energy shifts and intensity variations of Si surface related components are observed, which clearly indicate that the reaction starts already at 300 K. Shifts in the binding energy, changes of the peak shapes and intensity of the Ta 4f doublet at higher temperatures can be explained by the formation of stable silicide on the surface.  相似文献

We have investigated a BC3 covered NbB2(0 0 0 1) surface using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS), and low energy electron diffraction (LEED). The STM images reveal characteristic features of a Moiré pattern reflecting an incommensurate relation of the BC3 sheet with the substrate: bright protrusions with the periodicity of the substrate lattice are modulated in intensity with the periodicity of the BC3 lattice. As a result, the surface exhibits nm-scale patchy regions with either the √3 × √3 or the 1 × 1 structure of the substrate. The two-dimensional Fourier transformation pattern of the STM image is consistent with the LEED pattern proving the epitaxial and incommensurate relationship between BC3 surface sheet and substrate. No feature of a predicted superconducting gap was found in STS spectra measured at 5 K.  相似文献

The nanoscale hexagonal pattern observed in scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) for 3-layer and 4-layer Pb islands on Si(1 1 1) is studied theoretically. We found that besides thickness the atomic rearrangement at the Pb/Si interface plays an important role in determining the STM patterns. Electronic structures of the Pb film on Si(1 1 1) obtained from fully relaxed and unrelaxed Pb films are qualitatively different. Simulated STM images for Pb films with different stacking also show that the corrugation patterns are sensitive to the buried Pb-Si interfacial structure.  相似文献

The growth of Pb films on the Si(1 0 0)-2 × 1 surface has been investigated at low temperature using scanning tunneling microscopy. Although the orientation of the substrate is (1 0 0), flat-top Pb islands with (1 1 1) surface can be observed. The island thickness is confined within four to nine atomic layers at low coverage. Among these islands, those with a thickness of six layers are most abundant. Quantum-well states in Pb(1 1 1) islands of different thickness are acquired by scanning tunneling spectroscopy. They are found to be identical to those taken on the Pb(1 1 1) islands grown on the Si(1 1 1)7 × 7 surface. Besides Pb(1 1 1) islands, two additional types of Pb islands are formed: rectangular flat-top Pb(1 0 0) islands and rectangular three-dimensional (3D) Pb islands, and both their orientations rotate by 90° from a terrace to the adjacent one. This phenomenon implies that the structures of Pb(1 0 0) and 3D islands are influenced by the Si(1 0 0)-2 × 1 substrate.  相似文献

Ordering of submonolayer iron phthalocyanine (FePc) molecules deposited on Ag(1 1 1) was investigated using scanning tunneling microscopy. The room temperature deposition of FePc alone, without any annealing, results in no ordered overlayers. However, posterior annealing the substrate to 475 K leads to the formation of a two-dimensional oblique lattice with the lattice constants of 16.2 ± 0.3 Å and the angle of 78 ± 1° between them. The resulting FePc lattice is commensurate to the substrate lattice. In addition, the nearest neighbor distance in the lattice is significantly increased through a distinctive molecular orientation of the FePc molecules within the unit cell. The commensurate lattice with a large intermolecular distance is in sharp contrast to that observed from a close-packed square lattice that many other metallo-phthalocyanine molecules often self-assemble into. A possible reasoning behind this intriguing structure is discussed.  相似文献

Epitaxial graphene layers thermally grown on Si-terminated 6H-SiC (0 0 0 1) have been probed using Auger electron spectroscopy, Raman microspectroscopy, and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The average multilayer graphene thickness is determined by attenuation of the Si (L23VV) and C (KVV) Auger electron signals. Systematic changes in the Raman spectra are observed as the film thickness increases from one to three layers. The most striking observation is a large increase in the intensity of the Raman 2D-band (overtone of the D-band and also known as the G′-band) for samples with a mean thickness of more than ∼1.5 graphene layers. Correlating this information with STM images, we show that the first graphene layer imaged by STM produces very little 2D intensity, but the second imaged layer shows a single-Lorentzian 2D peak near 2750 cm−1, similar to spectra acquired from single-layer micromechanically cleaved graphene (CG). The 4-10 cm−1 higher frequency shift of the G peak relative to CG can be associated with charge exchange with the underlying SiC substrate and the formation of finite size domains of graphene. The much greater (41-50 cm−1) blue shift observed for the 2D-band may be correlated with these domains and compressive strain.  相似文献

We report on the growth of ultrathin epitaxial Co films on Fe(1 1 0) examined by scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM and STS). At room temperature Co forms pseudomorphic, ideally ordered body-centered cubic (bcc) layers for the first two monolayers as confirmed by atomically resolved STM images. This is in contrast to the related case of Co/Cr(1 1 0) where a superstructure occurs in the second layer. The third monolayer forms a close-packed structure and causes a transformation of the buried second monolayer into a close-packed structure. The Fe(1 1 0) substrate strongly influences the electronic structure of the first Co monolayer as concluded from the dI/dU spectra. This influence is less important for the second monolayer. The measured local density-of-states function for the bcc Co double layer is in agreement with theoretical predictions for bcc Co.  相似文献

A series of thin Ni films, with thicknesses between 0.2 ML to 13 ML, were deposited on a Pd(1 0 0) substrate (a = 3.89 Å) at room temperature (RT). The growth morphology was investigated using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). STM images indicate the existence of three different growth modes as a function of increasing coverage. Up to 6.5 ML, the films grow pseudomorphically, consistent with a face-centered tetragonal (fct) structure. From 6.5 ML to 10.5 ML a new apparent interlayer distance of 1.0 ± 0.1 Å is established. The new structure is accompanied by the appearance of an arrangement of filaments on the top layer surface. These filaments are presumably related to a strain relief mechanism of the fct films. Finally above 10.5 ML the Ni films recover the face-centered cubic (fcc) lattice constants. The filaments evolve, as a function of coverage, to form a net-like structure over the whole surface.  相似文献
