This paper deals with the co-existence of mixed aleatory and epistemic uncertainties in a wind turbine geared system for more reliable and robust vibration analyses. To this end, the regression-based polynomial chaos expansion(PCE) is used to track aleatory uncertainties, and the polynomial surrogate approach(PSA) is developed to treat the epistemic uncertainties. This non-intrusive dual-layer framework shares the same collocation pool, which is extracted from the Legendre series. Moreover, the ...

A general model of a rub-impact rotor-bearing system with initial permanent bow is set up and the corresponding governing motion equation is given. The nonlinear oil-film forces from the journal bearing are obtained under the short bearing theory. The rubbing model is assumed to consist of the radial elastic impact and the tangential Coulomb type of friction. Through numerical calculation, rotating speeds, initial permanent bow lengths and phase angles between the mass eccentricity direction and the rotor permanent bow direction are used as control parameters to investigate their effect on the rub-impact rotor-bearing system with the help of bifurcation diagrams, Lyapunov exponents, Poincaré maps, frequency spectrums and orbit maps. Complicated motions, such as periodic, quasi-periodic even chaotic vibrations, are observed. Under the influence of the initial permanent bow, different routes to chaos are found and the speed when the rub happens is changed greatly. Corresponding results can be used to diagnose the rub-impact fault in this kind of rotor systems and this study may contribute to a further understanding of the nonlinear dynamics of such a rub-impact rotor-bearing system with initial permanent bow.

Based on the nonlinear theory, the unbalanced responses of a fixed-tilting-pad gas-lubricated journal bearing-rigid rotor system are investigated. A?time-dependent mathematical model is established to describe the pressure distribution of gas-lubricated journal bearing with nonlinearity. The rigid rotor supported by a fixed-tilting-pad self-acting gas-lubricated journal bearing is modeled. The differential transformation method has been employed to solve the time-dependent gas-lubricated Reynolds equation, and the dynamic motion equation has been solved by the direct integral method. The unbalanced responses of the rotor system supported by fixed-tilting-pad gas-lubricated journal bearings are analyzed by the orbit diagram, Poincaré map, time series, and spectrum diagram. The numerical results reveal periodic, period-3, and quasiperiodic motions of nonlinear behaviors of the system. Finally, the effects of pivot ratio and preload coefficient on the nonlinear dynamic characteristics of the fixed-tilting-pad self-acting gas-lubricated journal bearing-rotor system are investigated.

In this paper, an analytical approximate solution is constructed for a rotor-AMB system that is subjected to primary resonance excitations at the presence of 1:1 internal resonance. We obtain an approximate solution applying the method of multiple scales, and then we conducted the system bifurcation analyses. The stability of the system is investigated applying Lyapunov’s first method. The effects of the different parameters on the system behavior are investigated. The analytical results showed that the rotor-AMB system exhibits a variety of nonlinear phenomena such as bifurcations, coexistence of multiple solutions, jump phenomenon, and sensitivity to initial conditions. Finally, the numerical simulations are performed to demonstrate and validate the accuracy of the approximate solutions. We found that all predictions from analytical solutions are in excellent agreement with the numerical integrations.

Stability and dynamic characteristics of a ball bearing-rotor system are investigated under the effect of the clearance in the ball bearing. Different clearance values are assumed to calculate the nonlinear stability of periodic solution with the aid of the Floquet theory. Bifurcation and chaos behavior are analyzed with variation of the clearance and rotational speed. It is found that there are three routes to unstable periodic solution. The period-doubling bifurcation and the secondary Hopf bifurcation are two usual routes to instability. The third route is the boundary crisis, a chaotic attractor occurs suddenly as the speed passes through its critical value. At last, the instable ranges for different internal clearance values are described. It is useful to investigate the stability property of ball bearing rotor system.

In this study, the yaw dynamics of a towed caster wheel system is analysed via an in-plane, one degree-of-freedom mechanical model. The force and aligning torque generated by the elastic tyre are calculated by means of a semi-stationary tyre model, in which the piecewise-smooth characteristic of the tyre forces is also considered, resulting in a dynamical system with higher-order discontinuities. The focus of our analysis is the Hopf bifurcation affected by the non-smoothness of the system. The structure of the analysis is organised in a similar way as in case of smooth bifurcations. Firstly, the centre-manifold reduction is performed, then we compose the normal form of the bifurcation. Based on the Galerkin technique an approximate, semi-analytical method to calculate the limit cycles is introduced and compared with the method of collocation. The analysis provides a deeper insight into the development of the vibrations associated with wheel shimmy and demonstrate how the non-smoothness due to contact-friction influences the dynamic behaviour.

Dynamic analysis of a high-speed rotor bearing systems is challenged by their highly nonlinear and complex properties. Hence, an approximate response surface method (RSM) is utilized to analyze the effects of design and operating parameters on the vibration signature of a rotor-bearing system. This paper focuses on accurate performance prediction, which is essential to the design of high performance rotor bearing system. It considers distributed defects such as internal radial clearance and surface waviness of the bearing components. In the mathematical formulation the contacts between the rolling elements and the races are considered as nonlinear springs, whose stiffnesses are obtained by using Hertzian elastic contact deformation theory. The governing differential equations of motion are obtained by using Lagrange's equations. In terms of the feature that the nonlinear bearing forces act on the system, a reduction method and corresponding integration technique is used to increase the numerical stability and decrease computer time for system analysis. Parameters effects are analyzed together and its influence considered with DOE and Surface Response Methodology are used to predict dynamic response of a rotor-bearing system.

Bifurcation analysis for a modified Jeffcott rotor with bearing clearances
A HB (Harmonic Balance)/AFT (Alternating Frequency/Time) technique is developed to obtain synchronous and subsynchronous whirling motions of a horizontal Jeffcott rotor with bearing clearances. The method utilizes an explicit Jacobian form for the iterative process which guarantees convergence at all parameter values. The method is shown to constitute a robust and accurate numerical scheme for the analysis of two dimensional nonlinear rotor problems. The stability analysis of the steady-state motions is obtained using perturbed equations about the periodic motions. The Floquet multipliers of the associated Monodromy matrix are determined using a new discrete HB/AFT method. Flip bifurcation boundaries were obtained which facilitated detection of possible rotor chaotic (irregular) motion as parameters of the system are changed. Quasi-periodic motion is also shown to occur as a result of a secondary Hopf bifurcation due to increase of the destabilizing cross-coupling stiffness coefficients in the rotor model.

The general nonlinear intrinsic equations of motion of an elastic composite beam are solved in order to obtain the elasto-dynamic response of a rotating articulated blade. The solution utilizes the linear Variational-Asymptotic Method (VAM) cross-sectional analysis, together with an improved damped nonlinear model for the rigid-body motion analysis of helicopter blades in coupled flap and lead-lag motions. The explicit (direct) integration algorithm implements the perturbation method in order to solve the transient form of the nonlinear intrinsic differential equations of motion and obtain the elasto-dynamic behavior of an accelerating composite blade. The specific problem considered is an accelerating articulated helicopter blade of which its motion is analyzed since it starts rotating from rest until it reaches the steady-state condition. It is observed that the steady-state solution obtained by this method compares very well with other available solutions. The resulting simulation code is a powerful tool for analyzing the nonlinear response of composite rotor blades; and for serving the ultimate aim of efficient noise and vibration control in helicopters.

This paper presents the study of the dynamic analysis of a rigid rotor supported by a two-lobe non-circular gas-lubricated journal bearing. A finite element method has been employed to solve the Reynolds equation in static and dynamical states and the dynamical equations have been solved using Runge–Kutta method. To analyze the behavior of the rotor center in horizontal and vertical directions under the different operating conditions, the dynamic trajectory, the power spectra, the Poincare maps, and the bifurcation diagrams are used. Results of this study indicates that by considering bearing number and rotor mass as the parameters of the system, complex dynamic behavior comprising periodic, KT-periodic, and quasi-periodic responses of the rotor center has occurred.

Abstract

The transient response of a slant-cracked rotor system during shut-down has been analyzed while it is decelerating through the critical speed. Vibration response has been simulated by using finite element method (FEM) for flexural vibrations. An unbalance force and a harmonically-varying torque is applied on the rotor system. Subharmonic frequency components at an interval frequency corresponding to torsional frequency were found in the frequency domain (Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) plot). These peaks are centered on the critical speed of the rotor system when a slant crack is present and can be used to detect the crack. The fundamental mode shapes of the rotor bearing systems are wavelet transformed to identify the crack location. A peak is observed at the crack location in the spatial variation of the wavelet-transformed fundamental mode shape. A few suggestions for the detection of slant cracks in the rotor during shut-down are described.
