The problem of indentation of a half-plane by a titled, shallow wedge, under frictionless conditions, is studied, using half-plane theory. The contact law itself, together with the pressure distribution and internal state of stress are found. Particular attention is then given to the nature of the pressure and state of stress at the apex, and an asymptotic form appropriate to all angular features within contacts, and therefore of widespread application, is introduced.

Certain self-similar problems involving the sudden motion of a wedge which were treated in the linear approximation in [1–3] are studied by the method of matched asymptotic expansions. The nature of the wave boundary of the perturbed region is determined. Second-approximation solutions are constructed which describe flows behind weak shock fronts propagating in a stationary gas and behind fronts of weak discontinuity lines propagating by known uniform flows. A boundary-value problem is formulated whose solution describes, in first approximation, flows in the neighborhoods of points of interaction of the fronts. The existence of similarity rules of flows in these nieghborhoods is estimated. An approximate solution of the problems is given.Translated from Zhurnal Prikladnoi Mekhaniki i Tekhnicheskoi Fiziki, No. 3, pp. 37–47, May–June, 1976.

The systematic development of the theory of shock reflection from a solid wall started in [1]. Regular reflection and a three-shock configuration originating in Mach reflection were considered there under the assumption of homogeneity of the domains between the discontinuities and, therefore, of rectilinearity of these latter. The difficulties of the theoretical study include the essential nonlinearity of the process as well as the instability of the tangential discontinuity originating during Mach reflection. Analytic solutions of the problem in a linear formulation are known for a small wedge angle or a weak wave (see [2–4], for example). The solution in a nonlinear formulation has been carried out numerically in [5, 6] for arbitrary wedge angles and wave intensities. Since the wave was nonstationary, the internal flow configuration is difficult to clarify by means of the constant pressure and density curves presented. A formulation of the problem for the complete system of gasdynamics equations in self-similar variables is given in [7] and a method of solution is proposed but no results are presented. Difficulties with the instability of the contact discontinuity are noted. The problem formulation in this paper is analogous to that proposed in [7]. However, a method of straight-through computation without extraction of the compression shocks in the flow field is selected to compute the discontinuous flows. The shocks and contact discontinuities in such a case are domains with abrupt changes in the gasdynamics parameters. The computations were carried out for a broad range of interaction angles and shock intensities. The results obtained are in good agreement with the analytical solutions and experimental results. Information about the additional rise in reflection pressure after the Mach foot has been obtained during the solution.

The paper presents a method for studying a system of elastic wedges containing a thin wedge with the angle Θ0, which may be arbitrary small. An analysis shows that the considered problem, involving 2-D vectors of tractions and displacements, cannot be solved by straight-forward extension of the method previously worked out by the authors for analogous scalar problems. The difficulty arises because of the disclosed feature of the dependences between the Mellin transformed displacements and tractions at the boundaries of a thin wedge: they are linearly dependent when their Taylor’s expansions in Θ0 are represented by the first terms only. The difficulty is removed by using the consequences of the linear dependence and by an appropriate re-arrangement of variables. Then simple physical models, simulating the influence of a thin wedge on a multi-wedge system, become available. The models cover the cases of a very rigid and very compliant thin wedge and also intermediate cases. The ranges of the models applicability are studied analytically and illustrated by numerical results.

We consider the problem of a semiinfinite through crack in an elastic plate, which starts suddenly under the application of a step load (mode-I). As the crack propagates, microfractures grow rapidly at a small distance ahead of the tip, releasing pressure pulses. This process of microfracture nucleation, pulse emission and subsequent coalescence with the main fracture front continues to occur during crack motion. We crudely simulate this process by employing a single point dilatational source that is situated ahead of the crack tip and moves in unison with it, emitting pulses periodically. The total wavefield is then due to the effect of this point source, as well as the scattering of the pulses by the crack front. We model this elastodynamic problem under the plane stress assumption. A closed form solution is developed for the in-plane displacements of the crack faces due to the scattered field. The surface wave contribution can be pulled out separately and is expected to be significant. In particular, the results are cast into a form that is readily amenable to numerical analysis. We will be presenting the numerical results in Part II of this two part paper.

The model developed in this Note makes it possible to determine the value of the mean indentation pressure usually named hardness from the elastoplastic properties of materials and also the shape of the cone or that of the wedge. The approximation rests upon the definition of a linear elastic solid which has the same indentation pressure as the material actually indented. Cases of cone and wedge indentation are studied. A method to determine the uniaxial stress–strain curve of materials from indentation tests is given. The results are validated using finite element simulations. To cite this article: G. A solution is found to the problem of symmetric cavitation flow over a wedge by an ideal incompressible fluid (in accordance with Efros's scheme [1]) in the presence of a point source in the flow or on the wedge. Expressions are obtained for the forces exerted on the source and the wedge by the fluid, the conditions under which there is a negative resistance (thrust) are indicated, and the profiles of the free streamlines are constructed for different values of the flow parameters.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Shidkosti i Gaza, No. 6, pp. 137–141, November–December, 1979.We thank L. The wedge subjected to tractions: a paradox re-examined
The classical two-dimensional solution for the stress distribution in an elastic wedge loaded by a uniform pressure on one side of the wedge becomes infinite when the wedge angle 2 satisfies the equation tan 235-1. This paradox was resolved recently by Dempsey who obtained a solution which is bounded at 235-2. However, for not equal but very close to 235-3, the classical solution can still be very large as approaches 235-4. In this paper we re-examine the paradox. We obtain a solution which remains bounded as approaches 235-5 and reproduces Dempsey's solution in the limit 235-6. At 235-7 the stress distribution contains a (ln r) term for general loadings. The (ln r) term disappears under a special loading and the stresses are bounded for all r. Moreover, the solution is not unique. In other words, for the wedge angle 235-8 under a special loading, infinitely many solutions exist for which the stresses are bounded for all r. We also obtain solutions which are bounded and approach Dempsey's solutions when 2= and 2. Again, under a special loading infinitely many solutions exist for which the stresses are bounded for all r. Care has been exercised in this paper to present the solutions in a form in which the terms r - and ln r are replaced by R -gl and ln R where R=r/r 0is the dimensionless radial distance and r 0 is an arbitrary constant having the dimension of length.

The wedge subjected to tractions: a paradox resolved
The classical two-dimensional solution provided by Lévy for the stress distribution in an elastic wedge, loaded by a uniform pressure on one face, becomes infinite when the opening angle 2 of the wedge satisfies the equation tan 2 = 2. Such pathological behavior prompted the investigation in this paper of the stresses and displacements that are induced by tractions of O(r ) as r0. The key point is to choose an Airy stress function which generates stresses capable of accommodating unrestricted loading. Fortunately conditions can be derived which pre-determine the form of the necessary Airy stress function. The results show that inhomogeneous boundary conditions can induce stresses of O(r ), O(r ln r), or O(r ln2 r) as r0, depending on which conditions are satisfied. The stress function used by Williams is sufficient only if the induced stress and displacement behavior is of the power type. The wedge loaded by uniform antisymmetric shear tractions is shown in this paper to exhibit stresses of O(ln r) as r0 for the half-plane or crack geometry. At the critical opening angle 2, uniform antisymmetric normal and symmetric shear tractions also induce the above type of stress singularity. No anticipating such stresses, Lévy used an insufficiently general Airy stress function that led to the observed pathological behavior at 2.

The paper is concerned with the continuous squeezing flow of Oldroyd-type fluids in a two-dimensional wedge. The flow mimics the lubrication action in a squeezing flow and is important in that there exists a similarity solution for any simple fluid. We are only concerned with Oldroyd-type fluids, however. It is shown by using a parameter continuation method that the Oldroyd-B model has a limiting Weissenberg number. The Phan Thien/Tanner model does not have this limiting Weissenberg number.
