We report a detailed experimental study of the fluctuations of acoustoelectric (AE) current induced by surface acoustic waves in a shallow-etched quantum point contact defined in a GaAs/AlxGa1?xAs heterostructure at 1.7 K. We observe that current fluctuations between two AE current plateaus are more obvious than those at the plateaus. Switching the metastable states of the impurities is considered as the physical origin of the current fluctuations.  相似文献

We investigate the spin-dependent effective electron-electron interactions in a uniform system of two-dimensional electrons to understand the spontaneous magnetization expected to occur at very low density. For this purpose, we adopt the Kukkonen-Overhauser form for the effective interactions which are built by accurately determined local-field factors describing the charge and spin fluctuations. The critical behavior of the effective interaction for parallel spin electrons allows us to quantitatively locate the transition to the ferromagnetic state at rs≈27. When the finite width effects are approximately taken into account the transition occurs at rs≈30 in agreement with recent quantum Monte Carlo calculations.  相似文献

Effects of quantum fluctuations, like wobbling and γ-fluctuations, are examined in even- as well as in odd-particle systems by making use of a simple model based on the Bohr hamiltonian. The strong signature dependence observed in ΔI = 1 E2 transitions in odd nuclei is studied in the context of an axially asymmetric deformation. We point out the importance of the quantum fluctuations especially at low-spin values and / or for shapes with small deviations from axial symmetry. It is also demonstrated that the J(2) moment of inertia may be larger than J(1) due to the wobbling motion.  相似文献

We analyze the behaviour of kinks and semiclassical bound states at finite temperatures by applying quantum statistics to the fluctuations which determine the quantum dynamics of these states. We consider two theories in one space dimension — the ?4 theory with a dynamical symmetry breaking and the Gross-Neveu model. For the ?4 theory, the one-loop temperature corrections are obtained by using temperature-dependent Green function techniques. We show that the same result can be obtained by applying quantum statistics to the fluctuations around the kink. For the Gross-Neveu model, the temperature dependence of the bound states, which correspond to time-independent field configurations, is obtained. We show that for every bound state there exists a critical temperature at which this state breaks up into its constituents. This critical temperature increases with the number of constituents of the bound state.  相似文献

Quantum effects in the dynamics of the Josephson phase difference in Josephson junctions with large electron transparency D are studied in the adiabatic regime, when the characteristic charging energyEC of the junction is much smaller than the superconducting energy gap Δ. In isolated junctions, quantum phase fluctuations are large and manifest themselves as Coulomb blockade of Cooper pair tunneling. The amplitude of the Coulomb blockade oscillations is calculated for single-mode junctions with arbitrary D. In particular, it is shown that the chiral anomaly completely suppresses Coulomb blockade in ballistic junctions with D =  1, and the suppression process at D   1 can be described as the Landau–Zener transition in imaginary time. In the regime when quantum phase fluctuations are small, they lead to quantum decay of supercurrent states due to macroscopic quantum tunneling of phase through the Josephson potential barrier. The decay rate is found in the nearly-ballistic junctions.  相似文献

By applying density functional theory, we find strong evidence for an itinerant nature of magnetism in two families of iron pnictides. Furthermore, by employing dynamical mean field theory with continuous time quantum Monte Carlo as an impurity solver, we observe that the antiferromagnetic metal with small magnetic moment naturally arises out of coupling between unfrustrated and frustrated bands. Our results point to a possible scenario for magnetism in iron pnictides where magnetism originates from a strong instability at the momentum vector (π,π,π) while it is reduced by quantum fluctuations due to the coupling between weakly and strongly frustrated bands.  相似文献

The triggering of the liquid-gas phase transition in hot nuclear matter by quantum and statistical fluctuations is studied in a microscopic approach to nucleation which is a fluid-dynamical version of the imaginary-time dependent mean-field theory at finite temperature. It is found that quantum tunnelling processes are only important below T = 1 MeV.  相似文献

Quantum fluctuations cause a decay of the supercurrent in thin superconducting wires making them resistive even at very low temperatures. We derive a microscopic effective action formalism that goes beyond the usual TDGL approach and study quantum fluctuations of the superconducting order parameter at all temperatures belowT C . We calculate the quantum phase slip rate in thin superconducting wires, demonstrate the importance of dissipation in a quantum phase slip process, and evaluate the resistanceR(T) of the wire. In very thin wires the effect is well observable, even at zero temperature.  相似文献

We study the equilibrium dynamics of the relative phase in a superconducting Josephson link taking into account the quantum fluctuations of the electromagnetic vacuum. The photons act as a superohmic heat bath on the relative Cooper pair number and thus, indirectly, on the macroscopic phase difference φ. This leads to an enhancement of the mean square 〈φ2〉 that adds to the spread due to the Coulomb interaction carried by the longitudinal electromagnetic field. We also include the interaction with the electronic degrees of freedom due to quasiparticle tunneling, which couple to the phase and only indirectly to the particle number. The simultaneous inclusion of both the radiation field fluctuations and quasiparticle tunneling leads to a novel type of particle-bath Hamiltonian in which the quantum particle couples through its position and momentum to two independent bosonic heat baths. We study the interplay between the two mechanisms in the present context and find interference contributions to the quantum fluctuations of the phase. We explore the observability of the QED effects discussed here.  相似文献

The early stages of a superfluorescent pulse are described with full account of both quantum and propagation effects. The pulse is triggered by zero point fluctuations of the atomic polarization field. If the number of atoms N is large these zero point fluctuations, and the electric field radiated at early times as well, have a gaussian distribution with width 4/N. An equivalent classical stochastic process is found in terms of which the later, intrinsically nonlinear part of the radiation problem can be analyzed.  相似文献

Well-width dependence of quantum and transport mobilities of electrons in GaAs/GaAlAs multiple quantum wells is studied for wells with widths ranging between 50 Å and 145 Å Experimental results are obtained from the amplitude analysis of the Shubnikov–de Haas (SdH) oscillations and from conventional Hall measurements at temperatures betweenT = 15 K and 4.2 K. A novel technique is employed to estimate, theoretically, the interface roughness parameters from electron quantum and transport lifetimes. The modelling is carried out for a range of layer fluctuations, width (Δ) and lateral size (Λ), as to obtain the best fit to the experimental results for individual samples. Our results indicate that the interface roughness scattering limits equal both quantum and transport mobilities at low temperatures, and that the nature of scattering by interface roughness (small or large angle) depends not only on the size and the width of the fluctuations but also on the distribution of these fluctuations within the samples. Therefore, unlike the predictions of the existing theoretical models, which assume constant values of Δ and Λ for all well widths, the well-width dependence of interface roughness scattering cannot be verified experimentally.  相似文献

For a special critical point at zero temperature,T c =0, which is called the displacive limit of a classical or of a quantum-mechanical model showing displacive phase transitions, we derive a set of static critical exponents in the large-n limit. Due to zero-point motions and quantum fluctuations at low temperatures, the exponents of the quantum model are different from those of the classical model. Moreover, we report results on scaling functions, corrections to scaling, and logarithmic factors which appear ford=2 in the classical case and ford=3 in the quantum-mechanical case. Zero-point motions cause a decrease of the critical temperature of the quantum model with respect to the classicalT c , which implies a difference between the classical and the quantum displacive limit. However, finite critical temperatures are found in both cases ford>2, while critical fluctuations still occur atT c =0 for 0<d≦2 in the classical case and for 1 <d≦2 in the quantum model. Further we derive the slope of the critical curve at the classical displacive limit exactly. The absence of 1/n-corrections to the exponents of the classical model is also discussed.  相似文献

The possibility that quantum fluctuations in the structure of spacetime at the Planck scale might be subject to experimental probes in discussed. The effects of spacetime foam in an approach inspired by string theory, in which solitonic D-brane excitations are taken into account when considering the ground state, are studied. The properties of this medium are described by analyzing the recoil of a D particle which is induced by the scattering of a closed-string state. This recoil causes an energy-dependent perturbation of the background metric, which in turn induces an energy-dependent refractive index in vacuo, and stochastic fluctuations of the light cone. Distant astrophysical sources such as Gamma-Ray Bursters (GRBs) may be used to test this possibility, and an illustrative analysis of GRBs whose redshifts have been measured is presented. The propagation of massive particles through such a quantum spacetime foam is also discussed.  相似文献

At low temperatures the electron elastic mean free path in a disordered conductor can become much smaller than the inelastic mean free path (or more precisely the Thouless length) which in turn may be comparable with, or even larger than the sample size. In this quantum regime, the electrical resistance is dominated by the coherence effects that eventually lead to the now well-known weak or strong localization. Yet another remarkable manifestation of the quantum coherence is that it makes the resistance non-additive in series and, more importantly, non-self averaging, thus replacing the classical Ohm’s law with a quantum Ohm’s law describing statistical fluctuations. In this paper, we report on some of our recent work on the statistics of these “Sinai” fluctuations of residual resistance for one and higher space dimensions (d). In particular we show that the physics at the mobility edge may be dominated by these fluctuations. We also show that an external electric field tends to harness these fluctuations. Some observational consequences such as 1/f-noise at low temperatures are discussed. Our approach is based on invariant imbedding extended by us for this purpose.  相似文献

Giant fluctuations of the recombination-radiation intensity of two-dimensional electrons were studied in double quantum wells with different well and barrier widths in the regime of the integer quantum Hall effect. It was found that the giant fluctuations of photoluminescence intensity in double quantum wells with a narrow barrier (l<150 Å) occur in a narrow magnetic-field interval, where the sum of electron concentrations in both wells corresponds to the integer filling factors 4, 8, and 12. It was established that, under these conditions, the coefficient C12 of correlation between the radiation intensities from different wells is close to unity. It is shown that, as the barrier width increases (l>200 Å), the coefficient C12 decreases, changes sign, and goes to zero at l=400 Å.  相似文献

In this note I introduce the notion of the “reliability horizon” for semi-classical quantum gravity. This reliability horizon is an attempt to quantify the extent to which we should trust semi-classical quantum gravity, and to get a better handle on just where the “Plack regime” resides. I point out that the key obstruction to pushing semi-classical quantum gravity into the Planck regime is often the existence of large metric fluctuations, rather than a large back-reaction. There are many situations where the metric fluctuations become large long before the back-reaction is significant. Issues of this type are fundamental to any attempt at proving Hawking's chronology protection conjecture from first principles, since I shall prove that the onset of chronology violation is always hidden behind the reliability horizon.  相似文献

The T-x magnetic phase diagram of Mn1 ? x Fe x Si solid solutions is probed by magnetic susceptibility, magnetization and resistivity measurements. The boundary limiting phase with short-range magnetic order (analogue of the chiral liquid) is defined experimentally and described analytically within simple model accounting both classical and quantum magnetic fluctuations together with effects of disorder. It is shown that Mn1 ? x Fe x Si system undergoes a sequence of two quantum phase transitions. The first “underlying” quantum critical (QC) point x* ~ 0.11 corresponds to disappearance of the long-range magnetic order. This quantum phase transition is masked by short-range order phase, however, it manifests itself at finite temperatures by crossover between classical and quantum fluctuations, which is predicted and observed in the paramagnetic phase. The second QC point x c ~ 0.24 may have topological nature and corresponds to percolation threshold in the magnetic subsystem of Mn1 ? x Fe x Si. Above x c the short-range ordered phase is suppressed and magnetic subsystem becomes separated into spin clusters resulting in observation of the disorder-driven QC Griffiths-type phase characterized by an anomalously divergent magnetic susceptibility χ ~ 1/T ξ with the exponents ξ ~ 0.5–0.6.  相似文献

We perform quantum calculations of fluctuations of the electromagnetic fields in AA collisions at RHIC and LHC energies. The analysis is based on the fluctuation–dissipation theorem. We find that in the quantum picture the field fluctuations are very small. They turn out to be much smaller than the predictions of the classical Monte Carlo simulation with the Woods–Saxon nuclear density.  相似文献

We study quantum effects of strong driving field applied to dissipative hybrid qubit-cavity system which are relevant for a realization of quantum gates in superconducting quantum metamaterials. We demonstrate that effects of strong and non-stationary drivings have significantly quantum nature and cannot be treated by means of mean-field approximation. This is shown from a comparison of steady state solution of the standard Maxwell–Bloch equations and numerical solution of Lindblad equation on a density matrix. We show that mean-field approach provides very good agreement with the density matrix solution at not very strong drivings f < f* but at f > f* a growing value of quantum correlations between fluctuations in qubit and photon sectors changes a behavior of the system. We show that in regime of non-adiabatic switching on of the driving such a quantum correlations influence a dynamics of qubit and photons even at weak f.  相似文献
