Aqueous solutions of the anionic surfactant potassium oleate (K-oleate) were studied using small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), steady-state rheology, and cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM). The micellar structural changes induced by the addition of potassium chloride (KCl) and sodium polystyrenesulfonate (PSS) of different molecular weights were investigated. Upon addition of KCl, a transition from spherical to wormlike micelles was detected from the SANS data and confirmed by the cryo-TEM pictures. The rheological measurements revealed a strong dependence of the low-shear viscosity on the concentration of salt: a broad maximum in the viscosity curve was observed upon addition of KCl, characteristic of the growth of micelles into long worms, followed by branching. The addition of PSS to salt-free solutions of K-oleate had a significant effect on the scattering patterns, revealing partial growth of the spherical micelles into rodlike micelles. In contrast, in the presence of high salt concentrations, addition of PSS to solutions of wormlike micelles did not bring any noticeable modifications in the scattering. However, in the same salt conditions, a clear effect was observed on the low shear viscosity upon addition of PSS, which was found to depend significantly on molecular weight. This suggests a novel way of impacting the viscosity of solutions of wormlike micelles.  相似文献

The aggregation behaviour of two ethylene oxide-propylene oxide block copolymers (PEO-PPO-PEO) in aqueous solution has been investigated in the presence of added salts (KCNS, KI, KBr, KCl and KF) by viscosity, cloud point, light scattering, pulse gradient spin echo NMR, and solubilization measurements. The salts have a strong effect on the cloud points of the pluronics. Both P-85 and L-64 form micelles which increase in size and change into elongated shapes when the cloud point is approached. The changes of size and shape of the micelles, revealed by the intrinsic viscosity and rheological properties, seem to occur at the same temperature relative to the cloud point, independent of the nature of the salt. The onset of micelle formation is also shifted in the same direction as the cloud point by the salts, but by a much smaller amount.  相似文献

Nonionic surfactant and temperature effects on the viscosity of hydrophobically modified hydroxyethyl cellulose (HMHEC) solutions are investigated experimentally. Weak shear thickening at intermediate shear rates takes place for HMHEC at moderate concentrations and becomes more significant at lower temperatures. While this amphiphilic polymer in surfactant-free solution does not turn turbid by heating to 95 degrees C, its mixture with nonionic surfactant shows a lower cloud point temperature than does a pure surfactant solution. For some mixture cases, phase separation takes place at temperatures as low as 2 degrees C. The drop of cloud point temperature is attributed to an additional attractive interaction between mixed micelles via chain bridging. With increasing temperature, the viscosity of an HMHEC-surfactant mixture in aqueous solution first decreases but then rises considerably until around the cloud point. The observed viscosity increase can be explained by the interchain association because of micellar aggregation.  相似文献

The anionic surfactant sodium oleate (NaOA) can self-assemble in aqueous solution in the presence of counter-ion inorganic salts to form wormlike micelles (WLMs), which exhibited viscoelastic behavior. In this paper, KCl was used to induce the formation of wormlike micelles with sodium oleate. In this process, we found that the addition of N, N-dimethylethanolamine (DMEA) can destroy the structure of WLMs leading significant decrease of viscosity. However, after introducing CO2 into the ternary solution (KCl-NaOA-DMEA), the WLMs can be regenerated due to the electrostatic interaction between the protonated DMEA and the anionic surfactants. The addition of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) causes the electrostatic interaction between OA- and DMEAH+ be destroyed, which results in the wormlike micelles becoming spherical micelles of lower viscosity. The transition of WLMs with high viscosity and low viscosity spherical micelles can be repeated several times by using CO2 and NaOH.  相似文献

Rheological studies were performed with aqueous salt solutions of viscoelastic cationic surfactant erucyl bis(hydroxyethyl)methylammonium chloride (EHAC) and its mixtures with hydrophobically modified polyacrylamide. The solutions of surfactant itself above the concentration of crossover of wormlike micelles exhibit two regions of rheological response. In the first region, they behave like polymer solutions in semidilute regime characterized by viscoelastic behavior with a spectrum of relaxation times. In the second region, unlike polymer solutions their relaxation after shear is dominated by a single relaxation time. Being composed of "living" micelles, the EHAC solutions easily lose their viscosity at the variation of the external conditions. For instance, heating from 20 to 60 degrees C reduces viscosity by up to 2 orders of magnitude, while added hydrocarbons induce a sudden drop of viscosity by 3-6 orders of magnitude. Polymer profoundly affects the rheological properties of EHAC solutions. The polymer/surfactant system demonstrates a 10,000-fold increase in viscosity as compared to pure-component solutions, the effect being more pronounced for polymer with less blocky distribution of hydrophobic units. A synergistic enhancement of viscosity was attributed to the formation of common network, in which some subchains are made up of elongated surfactant micelles, while others are composed of polymer. At cross-links the hydrophobic side groups of polymer anchor EHAC micelles. In contrast to surfactant itself, the polymer/surfactant system retains high viscosity at elevated temperature; at the same time it keeps a high responsiveness to hydrocarbon medium inherent to EHAC.  相似文献

Clouding behavior of PEO-PPO-PEO and PPO-PEO-PPO block copolymers were studied in presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and NaCl. Extensive study of Pluronic P84 (EO19PO43EO19) with different salts and ionic surfactants, were carried out using cloud point, viscosity and dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements. The change in cloud point, as well as the size of P84 micelles in aqueous salt solution obeys the Hofmeister lyotropic series. Results on P84-ionic surfactant mixture indicate stronger interaction in case of SDS compared to those in presence of dodecyl trimethylammonium chloride (DTAC); here interaction seems to diminish in the presence of salts.  相似文献

Aqueous solutions of anionic surfactant, sodium oleate (NaOA), have been studied by means of steady-state shear rheology and dynamic oscillatory technique. The micellar structure can be changed upon the addition of NaCl, Na2CO3 and NaCl/NaOH while NaOA concentration is maintained at 0.060 M. These systems except NaOA/NaCl show high viscosity and strong viscoelasticity. The hydroxide ion is very important for the formation of wormlike micelles. The anions of salts also have effect on the rheological properties of wormlike micelles. Three parameters: intersection frequency ωi, plateau modulus G0 and relaxation time τ are also discussed. The Maxwell model and Cole-Cole plot are applied to investigate the dynamic viscoelasticity of wormlike micelles. Variation in surfactant packing parameter RP can be used to explain the change of rheology and microstructure of the micelles.  相似文献

The micellar and phase behavior of an ethylene oxide-propylene oxide branched octablock copolymer Tetronic T 904 (hereafter written as T904) in water and NaCl solutions was examined. The copolymer shows a cloud point (CP) ranging from 74-65°C in the concentration range of 1-10% and forms aggregates (micelles) with a hydrodynamic diameter around 10-12nm in the temperature range 30-40°C. Stable, bluish solutions containing aggregates of variable size (several hundred nm in some cases) were observed even at temperatures much less than the critical micellization temperature (CMT=30°C for a 2% solution in water). The CP and the CMT markedly decrease in the presence of NaCl due to the dehydration of the polyethylene oxide shell. The size of the micelles in water or salt solutions increases at temperatures close to the CP as inferred from viscosity measurments. A model drug compound (nimesulide, NIM) was solubilized in T904 micelles which showed a remarkable increase in solubilization at higher temperature; however, a decrease in solubilization was observed in salt solutions. The thermodynamic parameters for solubilization were obtained, and the location of NIM in the copolymer micelles was investigated by UV-Visible spectroscopy.  相似文献

Self-assembled networks highly responsive to hydrocarbons   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Rheological studies were performed with aqueous salt solutions of anionic surfactant potassium oleate and its mixtures with hydrophobically modified polyacrylamide. Semidilute solutions of the surfactant in the presence of salt (KCl) demonstrate viscoelastic properties due to the formation of a transient network of entangled wormlike micelles. These systems are highly responsive to hydrocarbons: the addition of n-heptane or n-dodecane reduces the viscosity of solutions by up to 4 to 5 orders of magnitude, thus inducing the transition of a gellike system to a fluid one. It is the transformation of cylindrical surfactant micelles into spherical ones upon absorption of hydrocarbon that disrupts the network. The addition of a small amount (0.5 wt %) of associating polymer leads to up to a 5000-fold increase in the zero-shear viscosity and enhances the susceptibility to hydrocarbons. SANS data show that independently of the presence of polymer the radius of wormlike micelles is roughly equal to the length of a surfactant molecule, whereas the radius of spheres formed upon the absorption of hydrocarbon is 2-2.5-fold higher. A possible structure of the spherical micelles is discussed.  相似文献

Amino acid-based anionic surfactant, N-dodecanoylglutamic acid, after neutralizing by 2, 2′, 2″-nitrilotriethanol forms micellar solution at 25 °C. Addition of cationic cosurfactants hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC), hexadecylpyridinium chloride (CPC), and hexadecylpyridinium bromide (CPB) to the semi-dilute solution of anionic surfactant micellar solutions favor the micellar growth and after a certain concentration, entangled rigid network of wormlike micelles are formed. Viscosity increases enormously ~4th order of magnitude compared with water. With further addition of the cosurfactants, viscosity declines and phase separation to liquid crystal occurs. The wormlike micelles showed a viscoelastic behavior and described by Maxwell model with a single stress-relaxation mode. The position of viscosity maximum in the zero-shear viscosity curve shifts towards lower concentration upon changing cosurfactant from CPB to CTAC via CPC; however, the maximum viscosity is highest in the CPB system showing the formation of highly rigid network structure of wormlike micelles. In all the systems, viscosity decays exponentially with temperature following Arrhenius type behavior.  相似文献

Small-angle neutron scattering studies were used to investigate the effect of adding an alcohol ethoxylate nonionic surfactant (d-C12E20) to aqueous solutions of a cationic surfactant, erucyl bis(hydroxyethyl) methylammonium chloride (EHAC), with and without salt (KCl). The systematic use of contrast-matching, by alternately highlighting or hiding one of the surfactants, confirms that mixed micelles are formed. In salt-free solutions, mixed spherical micelles are formed and a core-shell model combined with a Hayter-Penfold potential was used to describe the data. The core radius is dominated by the EHAC tails and the outer radius determined by the ethoxylate headgroups of the nonionic surfactant. Addition of KCl promotes micellar growth; however, results of varying the solvent contrast revealed that when the nonionic surfactant is incorporated into the wormlike structure micellar breaking is promoted. Thus, mixed wormlike micelles with shorter contour lengths compared to the pure EHAC worms are formed.  相似文献

Phase behavior of mixed sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) aqueous solution was studied. The rheological properties and microstructure were investigated using a rheostat and freeze-fracture technique and are shown to be closely related to the phase behavior. Experimental investigations reveal two symmetrical aqueous two-phase systems (ATPS) in the ternary phase diagram of SDS/CTAB/H2O system. In the surfactant rich phase of ATPS or in the adjacent stoichiometric state of ATPS, the system has high viscosity because of its long range ordered structure. Lamellar phase was found in the high viscosity samples in which the cationic and anionic surfactant are in 1: 3 or 3: 1 stoichiometry. In addition, the viscosity has a tendency to increase when salt was added to the solution. The viscosity increase is due to the salt can screen the repulsion between different charged headgroups and thus reduces the effective size of surfactants and facilitates the spherical or rod likes micelles to be transformed to worm-like micelles which can form hexagonal or liquid crystal phases. Large-size salt ions like sodium sulfate (especially organic salt ions) have more significant effect on the surfactant solution viscosity. The text was submitted by the authors in English.  相似文献

We prepared a CO2/N2-switchable pseudogemini surfactant system composed of sodium oleate (NaOA) and N, N, N’, N’-tetramethyl-1, 6-hexanediamine (TMHDA) at a mole ratio of 2:1. The two tertiary amine groups of the TMHDA can be protonated into quaternary ammonium salt when the system was bubbled with CO2, which can ‘‘bridge’’ two NaOA molecules via electrostatic attraction to form a pseudogemini surfactant. The formed pseudogemini surfactant can further self-assemble to wormlike micelles, causing a sharp increase in viscosity. The viscoelastic property and structure transitions of the pseudogemini surfactant system were investigated before and after bubbling of CO2. The pseudogemini surfactant system transformed from water-like to gel-like fluid with the bubbling of CO2, followed by white precipitate. The cryo-transmission electron microscope (cryo-TEM) characterization and rheological measurements exhibited that the sol–gel transition was attributed to a spherical-wormlike micelle transition. Moreover, this transition was switchable at least in three cycles. Finally, a reasonable mechanism of aggregate behavior transition was proposed from the viewpoint of the molecular states, micelle structures, and intermolecular interactions.  相似文献

The phase behavior and microstructure of aqueous mixtures of n-octyl-beta-D-glucoside (C8betaG1) and triethylene glycol mono-n-octyl ether (C8E3) is presented. C8betaG1 forms a one-phase micellar solution in water at surfactant concentrations up to 60 wt %, whereas mixtures with C8E3 show a liquid-liquid phase transition at low surfactant concentration. The position of this phase boundary for mixtures can be rationally shifted in the temperature-composition window by altering the ratio of the two surfactants. Small-angle neutron scattering is used to determine the size and shape of the mixed micelles and to characterize the nature of the fluctuations near the cloud point of the micellar solutions. The C8betaG1/C8E3 solutions are characterized by concentration fluctuations that become progressively stronger upon approach to the liquid-liquid phase boundary, whereas micellar growth is negligible. Such observations confirm previous views of the role of the surfactant phase boundary in tuning attractive micellar interactions, which can be used effectively to change the nature and strength of interparticle interactions in colloidal dispersions. Colloidal silica particles were then added to these surfactant mixtures and were found to aggregate at conditions near the cloud point. This finding is relevant to current strategies for protein crystallization.  相似文献

Aqueous solutions of ionic surfactants with strongly binding counterions exhibit wormlike or network properties. The properties of anionic micelles of sodium dodecyltrioxyethylene sulfate (AES) in the presence of multivalent counterion Al3+ were investigated by dynamic rheological methods. The steady-shear viscosity and stress, the zero-shear viscosity, the complex viscosity, and the dynamic shear modulus have been determined as a function of the surfactant and salt concentrations. Some interesting and noticeable results have been obtained, which can express the micellar growth and structure. The formation of wormlike micelles or network structure in surfactant solutions becomes much easier with increasing surfactant and salt concentrations. The Cox-Merz rule and the Cole-Cole plot are not applicable perfectly to the systems studied. The nonlinear viscoelasticity and non-Newtonian behavior can be found in all solutions according to the comparison with the simple Maxwell model. The technique of freeze-fracture transmission electron microscopy (FF-TEM) was also applied to confirm the formation of these interesting structures.  相似文献

A cationic fluorocarbon surfactant system of diethanolheptadecafluoro-2-undecanolmethylammonium chloride (DEFUMACl) and both mixed systems of DEFUMACl/cationic dodecyltrimethylammonium chloride (DTACl) and DEFUMACl/cationic Gemini copolymer was investigated by 19F NMR spectroscopy and surface tension measurements. The critical micelle concentration (cmc) of DEFUMACl by 19F NMR is about 3.40 mmol/L, which is completely consistent with that obtained by the surface tension method. The studies of salt and temperature on the cmc values of DEFUMACl suggest that both salt addition and temperature increase decrease the cmc values of DEFUMACl. 19F NMR measurements provide much richer information on both mixed systems. For the DEFUMACl-DTACl system, two break points were observed with increased total surfactant concentration. The first break point means the DEFUMACl and DTACl mixed micelles and the second one implies the individual DEFUMACl micelles. Results of 19F NMR and surface tension measurements for DEFUMACl/cationic Gemini copolymer mixtures show three peculiar break points, corresponding to the critical association concentration (cac) of DEFUMACl, the concentration where cationic Gemini copolymer molecules become saturated by DEFUMACl micelles, and the concentration where DEFUMACl micelles and cationic Gemini copolymer coexist. These peculiar points in the cationic-fluorocarbon and cationic-copolymer systems were first reported by 19F NMR and surface tension measurements. These results should broaden the useful information for a better understanding of the mechanism of interaction and the behavior of surfactant-polymer mixtures.  相似文献

Rheological properties of micellar solutions of a cationic Gemini surfactant, 2-hydroxypropyl-1,3-bis (dodecyldimethylammonium chloride), are studied as a function of aging time and salt addition. The results show that the self-aggregating behaviour in solution changes as a factor of time, probably due to intermolecular hydrogen bonds. The viscosity of the solution undergoes a series of visible changes so that the solution changes from a flow state to highly viscoelastic state, and finally, to a transparent solid, with a corresponding 4–6-fold increase in zero shear state viscosity. Rheology and freeze fracture transmission electron microscopy (FF-TEM) measurements show rod-like micelles at the beginning, which then change to wormlike micelles, and eventually to a quasi-gel-like network. Addition of an inorganic salt (NaCl) induces salting out, while the addition of an organic salt (NaSal) promotes micellar growth. At a fixed NaSal-to-surfactant molar ratio of 3:5, all solutions show Maxwell fluid behaviour and maximum zero-shear-rate viscosity; these trends can be attributed to the formation of a network structure between the cationic ions of the surfactant and Sal as the surfactant concentration increases. Crystal analysis further confirms the presence of structures linked by intermolecular hydrogen bonds.  相似文献
