We study the SL(2, ?)-infimal lengths of simple closed curves on halftranslation surfaces. Our main result is a characterization of Veech surfaces in terms of these lengths.We also revisit the “no small virtual triangles” theorem of Smillie and Weiss and establish the following dichotomy: the virtual triangle area spectrum of a half-translation surface either has a gap above zero or is dense in a neighborhood of zero.These results make use of the auxiliary polygon associated to a curve on a half-translation surface, as introduced by Tang and Webb.  相似文献

Four topological and dynamical properties of nonorientable surfaces are proved.Thefirst is that for every continuous flow defined on any nonorientable closed surface,thereexist periodic or singular closed orbits.In the case of the projective plane,it confirms aconjecture of professor Ye Yian-qian in his lecture notes“dynamical systems on surfaces”.Secondly,the author gives an exact upper bound of the number of closed curves onnonorientable surfaces,which do not intersect each other and the complement of their sumis still connected.The third is concerned with the upper and lower bound of the number ofthe periodic or singular closed orbits with certain properties.The last is related to theconnectedness of the complement of a lifting curve on two-fold covering space.The firstproperty may be considered as a generalization of Kneser theorem from Klein bottle togeneral nonorientable surfaces and the second as a generalization of[4]Theorem 9.3.6from orientable surfaces to nonorientable surfaces.  相似文献

For compact hyperbolic Riemann surfaces, the collar theorem gives a lower bound on the distance between a simple closed geodesic and all other simple closed geodesics that do not intersect the initial geodesic. Here it is shown that there are two possible configurations, and in each configuration there is a natural collar width associated to a simple closed geodesic. In this paper we prove that every closed polyhedral surface in Euclidean three-space can be approximated (uniformly with respect to the Hausdorff metric) by smooth surfaces of the same topological type such that not only the (Gaussian) curvature but also the absolute curvature and the absolute mean curvature converge in the measure sense. This gives a direct connection between the concepts of total absolute curvature for both smooth and polyhedral surfaces which have been worked out by several authors, particularly N. H. Kuiper and T. On any timelike surface with zero mean curvature in the four-dimensional Minkowski space we introduce special geometric (canonical) parameters and prove that the Gauss curvature and the normal curvature of the surface satisfy a system of two natural partial differential equations. Conversely, any two solutions to this system determine a unique (up to a motion) timelike surface with zero mean curvature so that the given parameters are canonical. We find all timelike surfaces with zero mean curvature in the class of rotational surfaces of Moore type. These examples give rise to a one-parameter family of solutions to the system of natural partial differential equations describing timelike surfaces with zero mean curvature.  相似文献

A pair of points in a riemannian manifold M is secure if the geodesics between the points can be blocked by a finite number of point obstacles; otherwise the pair of points is insecure. A manifold is secure if all pairs of points in M are secure. A manifold is insecure if there exists an insecure point pair, and totally insecure if all point pairs are insecure. Compact, flat manifolds are secure. A standing conjecture says that these are the only secure, compact riemannian manifolds. We prove this for surfaces of genus greater than zero. We also prove that a closed surface of genus greater than one with any riemannian metric and a closed surface of genus one with generic metric are totally insecure.  相似文献

We improve – roughly by a factor 2 – the known bound on the multiplicity of the second eigenvalue of Schr?dinger operators (i.e. Laplace plus potential) on closed surfaces. This gives four new topological types of surfaces for which Colin de Verdière's conjecture relating the maximal multiplicity to the chromatic number of the surface is verified. The proof goes by defining a space of "nodal splittings” of the surface, equipped with a double covering to which a Borsuk-Ulam type theorem is applied. We give a new method to construct unirational surfaces which may be applied to the following question posed by Zariski in his studies on unirational surfaces. A Kleinian group naturally stabilizes certain subdomains and closed subsets of the closure of hyperbolic three space and yields a number of different quotient surfaces and manifolds. Some of these quotients have conformal structures and others hyperbolic structures. For two generator free Fuchsian groups, the quotient three manifold is a genus two solid handlebody and its boundary is a hyperelliptic Riemann surface. The convex core is also a hyperelliptic Riemann surface. We find the Weierstrass points of both of these surfaces. We then generalize the notion of a hyperelliptic Riemann surface to a hyperelliptic three manifold. We show that the handlebody has a unique order two isometry fixing six unique geodesic line segments, which we call the Weierstrass lines of the handlebody. The Weierstrass lines are, of course, the analogue of the Weierstrass points on the boundary surface. Further, we show that the manifold is foliated by surfaces equidistant from the convex core, each fixed by the isometry of order two. The restriction of this involution to the equidistant surface fixes six generalized Weierstrass points on the surface. In addition, on each of these equidistant surfaces we find an orientation reversing involution that fixes curves through the generalized Weierstrass points.Mathematics Subject Classifications (2000). primary 30F10, 30F35, 30F40; secondary 14H30, 22E40.  相似文献

We use a narrow-band approach to compute harmonic maps and conformal maps for surfaces embedded in the Euclidean 3-space, using point cloud data only. Given a surface, or a point cloud approximation, we simply use the standard cubic lattice to approximate its $\epsilon$-neighborhood. Then the harmonic map of the surface can be approximated by discrete harmonic maps on lattices. The conformal map, or the surface uniformization, is achieved by minimizing the Dirichlet energy of the harmonic map while deforming the target surface of constant curvature. We propose algorithms and numerical examples for closed surfaces and topological disks. To the best of the authors' knowledge, our approach provides the first meshless method for computing harmonic maps and uniformizations of higher genus surfaces.  相似文献

This paper presents a fast algorithm for constructing a smooth three-dimensional surface over a set of cross-sectional contours. We assume that these sections are perpendicular to the z-axis and first consider the case that the surface can be represented in cylindrical coordinates. An approximation is then determined for r(θ, z) by using tensor product splines which satisfy certain boundary constraints. The algorithm is an extension of an existing semi-automatic surface fitting algorithm. The knots of the spline are chosen automatically but a single parameter is expected to control the tradeoff between closeness of fit and smoothness of fit.Both open and closed surfaces can be represented. In particular we demonstrate the use of a non-linear transformation for obtaining smooth closed surfaces.The algorithm can easily be extended to the reconstruction of surfaces which cannot be represented in cylindrical coordinates. A number of applications are also briefly discussed such as the calculation of volumes and the intersection with other surfaces. We have applied the method in practice to obtain a 3-D integrated image of the cerebral blood vessels and CT view of tumor for stereotactic neurosurgery.  相似文献

The paper develops a study of closed geodesics on piecewise smooth constant curvature surfaces of revolution initiated by I.V. Sypchenko and D. S. Timonina. The case of constant negative curvature is considered. Closed geodesics on a surface formed by a union of two Beltrami surfaces are studied. All closed geodesics without self-intersections are found and tested for stability in a certain finite-dimensional class of perturbations. Conjugate points are found partly.  相似文献

We give a representation for the restrictions ofA-diffeomorphisms of closed orientable surfaces of genus > 1 from a homotopy class containing a pseudo-Anosov diffeomorphism to all one-dimensional attractors that do not contain special pairs of boundary periodic points. The representation is given by the restriction of a hyperbolic homeomorphism to an invariant zero-dimensional set formed by the intersection of two transversal geodesic laminations. It is shown how this result can be generalized to the representation of the restrictions ofA-diffeomorphisms defined on a closed surface of any genus to arbitrary one-dimensional attractors.
