A radiochemical procedure is given for the simultaneous determination of low levels of129I, actinides (Pu, Am, Cm) and90Sr in vegetation samples. It is shown that grass samples up to 5 kg fresh weight can be wet ashed conveniently by hydrogen peroxide under alkaline conditions, subsequent to an initial enzymatic disintegration. After purification of the iodine fraction,129I is determined by neutron activation analysis. Using alpha spectrometry,238Pu and239,240Pu are determined in the plutonium fraction, and241Am,242Cm, and244Cm in the americium/curium fraction. The90Sr is determined after separation by beta counting its decay product90Y.  相似文献

A gamma-spectrometric method using an intrinsic high resolution germanium detector has been developed for the determination of isotope ratios of plutonium from samples in solution form. The method is based on the assay of low energy gamma-rays of238Pu,239Pu,240Pu and241Pu and does not require the use of branching intensities or the knowledge of detection efficiencies for different gamma rays. Since low energy gamma-rays are used, the effect of241Am has also been studied. It is found that results are not affected up to 0.5 wt% of241Am in plutonium samples. An accuracy of 3% is achievable in the determination of240Pu/239Pu and241Pu/239Pu atom ratios as demonstrated by carrying out measurements on isotopic standards of plutonium.  相似文献

An On-Line Gamma Monitor profiles the concentration of uranium, plutonium, and americium in waste and product streams of the anion exchange process used to purify plutonium at Los Alamos. The Monitor employs passive gamma Spectrometry to measure the 59.5-KeV and 129-KeV gamma rays of241Am and239Pu, respectively. Because the uranium impurity in typical process streams has no gamma ray suitable for passive measurement, a novel radiotracer technique is used. Uranium-237, always present in plutonium processed at Los Alamos as a minor alpha-decay daughter of241Pu, has a 6.8-day half-life and 208-KeV gamma energy, which make it an ideal radiotracer for macro amounts of uranium in the process. The On-Line Gamma Monitor is used routinely to provide Los Alamos operators with continuous, real-time process control information.  相似文献

To clarify environmental effects of the Chemobyl radionuclides, long-lived Chernobyl radioactivity (239,240Pu,238Pu,241Pu and90Sr) in deposition samples in May 1986 was measured at 11 stations in Japan. Temporal variation of weekly deposition of90Sr differed from that of volatile radionuclides such as131I and137Cs, which may reflect the released process at Chernobyl. On the other hand, the geographical distributions of the monthly deposition of long-lived radionuclides were similar to those of volatile radionuclides, in which maximum deposits of90Sr and plutonium were observed in Akita, a northwestern Japan Sea coast site of Honshu Island. Higher241Pu deposition in most of the stations, as well as high238Pu/239,240Pu activity ratios were observed. The241Pu/238Pu activity ratios in deposition samples were nearly equal to that in the total release, which is clear evidence that Chernobyl-derived plutonium was transported to Japan in May 1986 together with volatile radionuclides although the contribution of Chernobyl Pu was about three orders of magnitude lower than137Cs.  相似文献

Xenon found in lunar samples is a binary mixture of244Pu fission xenon and a trapped xenon, whose isotopic composition often shows a striking resemblance to that ofTakaoka's1 primitive xenon. The decay product of129I is conspicuously absent in lunar samples and this may be attributed to the facts that (a) the half-life of129I is much shorter than that of244Pu, and (b) the separation of xenon from plutonium may take place easily, since the former is a gaseous element, while the latter is a refractory element. The separation of xenon from iodine may not take place easily, however, since the former is a gaseous element, while the latter is a volatile element. The isotopic compositions of the trapped xenon released from ordinary chondrites and achondrites resemble that ofTakaoka's primitive xenon, which has been mass-fractionated in such a manner that the heavier isotopes are systematically enriched relative to the lighter isotopes.  相似文献

The carbonaceous chondrite Allende contains (22±1)·10−12 cm3STP/g of244Pu fission xenon and two kinds of primordial xenon: Type I and Type II. The former represents the isotopic composition of a primordial xenon, which resided in the vicinity of a supernova shortly before it exploded, while the latter represents that of the xenon, which resided in the supernova. The isotopic composition of xenon found in the pink inclusion of the Allende meteorite, corrected for the presence of very large excesses of244Pu fission xenon,129Xe from the decay of129I, and of128Xe from the neutron-capture reactions on127I, resembles that of Type-I primordial xenon. The isotopic composition of xenon found in the diamond inclusions of the Allende meteorite, on the other hand, represents that of Type-II primordial xenon and it resembles that of a mixture of Type-I primordial xenon whose isotopic composition is severely altered by a combined effect of (a) mass-fractionation, (b) spallation, (c) stellar-temperature neutron-capture reactions, and (d) the presence of a large excess of244Pu fission xenon.  相似文献

Summary 241Pu concentrations were calculated indirectly in different compartments of the southern Baltic ecosystem by the activity measurements of241Am isotope from the increase of the<span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Symbol;mso-bidi-font-family:Symbol; mso-ansi-language:EN-GB'>b-emitting241Pu at 16-18 years after the Chernobyl accident. Enhanced levels of241Pu were observed in all analyzed samples. Maximum values (0.408 and 0.367 mBq. g-1d.w.) of the estimated241Pu concentrations were found in sediments of Internal Puck Bay and Gdańsk Bay, respectively, and in the suspended matter from water of Gdańsk Bay (77.8 mBq.g-1d.w.). The highest241Pu/239+240Pu activity ratio was found in the suspended matter (1500) and water (140). The241Pu activity of the air dust was very high in April 1986, 3643±34.3 mBq.g-1d.w., and the241Pu/239+240Pu activity ratio was 56, but the highest241Pu/239+240Pu activity ratio of the air dust was measured in August. Then the241Pu concentration in air dust decreased quickly to values similar to those before the Chernobyl accident.<span style='font-size:12.0pt'>This study provides new data for the 241Pu concentrations in various compartments of the Baltic Sea ecosystem.  相似文献

Half-life of241Pu is of great importance in nuclear technology. In view of large variation in the values (13–15 y) reported till 1974 in literature, efforts have been made in different laboratories to determine this half-life with high precision and accuracy. In our laboratory, it has been determined by different methods which may be classified in two categories, viz. (1) parent decay method, and (2) daughter growth method. In the parent decay method, change in isotope ratios241Pu/239Pu,241Pu/240Pu and241Pu/242Pu was studied periodically by a thermal ionization mass spectrometer. Single as well as double ratio method was used to calculate the half-life. In the daughter growth method, the half-life was obtained in four independent ways. These were (1) alpha spectrometry taking239Pu and242Pu separately as reference isotopes and studying periodically the increase in alpha activity ratio, (2) alpha proportional counting for observing periodically the change in total alpha activity, (3) isotope dilution alpha spectrometry using243Am as a spike, (4) isotope dilution mass spectrometry using243Am as a spike. In all these methods, synthetic mixtures were prepared for achieving high precision and accuracy in different measurements. Based on the results obtained in this laboratory and the values reported by other laboratories, a half-life value of 14.4±0.1 y is recommended. The paper reviews the past history, puts forth the present status, highlights the current trends for studying the effect of chemical composition of plutonium on the half-life of241Pu and presents the future requirements for achieving higher accuracy in the half-life of241Pu.  相似文献

Chemical leaching experiments of237Np in the sediments from the Esk Estuary and the Ribble Estuary in the Irish Sea, U. K., have been carried out, in comparison with those of239, 240Pu and241Am, to understand the geochemical associations of these long-lived radionuclides with sediment. Transuranium nuclides were produced by irradiating a pellet of natural uranium sulfide in the Japan Material Testing Reactor (JMTR). After irradiation, a successive separation of uranium, plutonium, americium and curium was carried out. The fractional concentrations of the nuclides238Pu,239Pu,240Pu,241Am,243Am,242Cm and244Cm were determined by α-ray spectrometry, and those of241Pu and242mAm were estimated from the build-up of α-emitting daughters,241Am and242Cm, respectively. As the yield of242Pu was too slight to be detected by α-counting, the neutron activation analysis of the plutonium fraction based on the242Pu(n, γ)243Pu reaction was carried out by γ-ray spectrometry, and it was shown that a few pg of242Pu could be determined. A burn-up of235U was also estimated by neutron activation analysis. The experimental results are compared with the calculated ones.  相似文献

A liquid scintillation counting method for the simultaneous determination of Pu and Am, with a two-phase cocktail, has been applied to the analysis of a tissue sample from an accidental exposure incident. The sample contained239Pu,241Pu, and241Am. In addition to analysis by two liquid scintillation counting techniques, analysis of the sample was performed by -spectroscopy and ZnS scintillation techniques, and the results were compared. The presence of241Pu interfered with the liquid scintillation determination of241Am when the two-phase cocktail was used, but the results were in agreement sufficient to be useful in determining what course of treatment, if any, might be necessary for the patient.  相似文献

The concentration of239,240Pu and241Am in different samples collected from the coastal marine environment of Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan facing the Pacific Ocean have been studied. Seawater samples have been collected since 1975 and sea-biota since 1981. The mean concentration levels of239,240Pu and241Am were 0.51, 0.20 for anchovy, 0.22, 0.11 for flounder, 4.9, 0.77 for brown algae, 2.0, 2.4 for shellfish, and 0.022, 0.0028 for seawater (in mBq/kl), respectively. The chronological change of239,240Pu in seawater was influence by fallout amounts. The activity ratio between the nuclides showed steady levels after two years from the end of atmospheric nuclear explosion tests. Activity levels and the ratios for each type of sample are briefly discussed.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to establish a ratio for241Am to239Pu in soil at the Rocky Flats Plant and to compare241Am concentrations obtained using in-situ and laboratory gamma spectroscopy measurements to concentrations determined with radiochemical analysis and alpha spectroscopy. Soil samples were collected for radiochemical and laboratory gamma spectroscopy analysis from vertical profiles in 3 cm layers to a depth of 21 cm at predetermined locations along transects oriented in the direction of prevailing winds. The origin for the transects was the center of the 903 Pad at the Rocky Flats Plant, which is believed to be the source for most of the241Am and239Pu contamination. A 100 minute in-situ gamma spectroscopy measurement was made at each soil sample location with a portable HPGe detector. Soil samples were dried, passed through a 2 mm sieve, mixed, and split in two fractions. One fraction was analyzed radiochemically for241Am and239Pu and the second was analyzed using laboratory gamma spectroscopy. The median ratio of241Am to239Pu activities, which appears to be independent of soil depth and distance from suspected sources, was 0.17. There is a strong correlation between241Am and239Pu concentrations determined using radiochemical analysis with alpha spectroscopy and concentrations determined with laboratory gamma spectroscopy. Results from in-situ gamma spectroscopy measurements were also correlated with the radiochemical analyses but exhibited greater variability than laboratory measurements. This on-going investigation has demonstrated that it is possible to indirectly measure239Pu concentrations in soil if the ratio of241Am to239Pu can be established. The results indicate that judicious use of a combination of radiochemical analyses with laboratory and in-situ gamma spectroscopy measurements may provide a cost-effective approach for characterization of large sites where241Am and239Pu contamination occur.  相似文献

The cumulative depositions of137Cs,90Sr and fallout Pu in the volcanic ash soil of Korea were determined. The average accumulated depositions of137Cs,90Sr and fallout Pu in the volcanic soil were much higher than those in other forest sites of Korea. From depth profiles, it was found that137Cs,90Sr and239,240Pu in the volcanic soil are more mobile than those in other forest sites of Korea, and that the downward movement of90Sr is faster than137Cs and239,240Pu. A significant correlation was found between the concentration of137Cs and those of90Sr and239,240Pu. The activity ratios of238Pu/239,240Pu and241Pu/239,240Pu in soils are close to those observed in the cumulative deposit from the global fallout of nuclear weapon testings.  相似文献

A survey has been carried out of40K,60Co,99Tc,106Ru,125Sb,129I,134Cs,137Cs,154Eu,226Ra,228Ra,237Np,238Pu,239,240Pu,241Pu,241Am,242Cm, and243,244Cm activities in sediments from the Irish Sea. Several of these radionuclides were measured independently at two separate laboratories to enable the intercomparison of the results produced. The comprehensive data set generated allows the present spatial distributions of these radionuclides in coastal sediments to be examined in relation to sediment textural characteristics and by comparison with earlier survey, enables the temporal trends in their activities to be determined. In general all artificial radionuclides showed lower activities in sediments in response to falling discharges from Sellafield and relationships with either grain size, distance from Sellafield or both. Isotope ratios were similar to cumulative weighted activity ratios rather than present day values due to sediment mixing. Pu levels supplied evidence for the lag in response of sediment deposits with increasing distance from Sellafield due to sediment transport.  相似文献

Concentrations of239,240Pu and241Am in filtered seawater, particulate fraction and sediment were measured. Methods for determination of these nuclides were critically chequed and a new rapid method for241Am in sediment was developed. Due to seasonal variation a significant decrease of plutonium and americium concentrations in surface water takes place in summer. Americium is more efficiently associated with particulate matter than plutonium. From May 1980 to September 1984 soluble plutonium in the water was reduced to about half. The residence half-time of239,240Pu in the water of Baltic Sea is of the order of 5 years. About similar concentrations of239,240Pu and241Am were found in particulates in water as in the surface layer of the sediment. The average Kd-values for plutonium and americium were 105 and 105–106 ml/g, respectively.  相似文献

An accurate and reliable method has been developed and routinely carried out for the sequential determination of239,240Pu and241Am in environmental samples. After suitable pretreatment.239,240Pu and241Am are separated from other elements by means of the anion exchange resin method. Americium-241 is purified by coprecipitation with calcium oxalate and then ion exchanged in mixed media of the mineral acid-methanol. In the analysis,242Pu (or236Pu) and244Cm are used as chemical yield monitors. The recoveries of the yield monitors in the analyses of some kinds of environmental samples were 7080% for plutonium and 7686% for curium. The concentration of239,240Pu in the coastal sea water were 7.022 Bq/l and that of241Am was 1.26.3 Bq/l. The mean concentrations of239,240Pu in the edible parts of the marine products ranged from 0.22 to 7.4 mBq/kg · fresh and those of241Am ranged from 0.11 to 2.6 mBq/kg · fresh.  相似文献

A low-background well-type high-purity germanium detector system, with high counting efficiencies for X-rays and low-energy g-rays, was used to determine several radionuclides of environmental, biomedical, or geological interest. These included 125I, 129I, 210Pb, 226Ra, 234Th (daughter of 238U), 239Pu, 240Pu and 241Am. Methods were devized for their determinations in diverse environmental matrices or under laboratory procedural conditions. Counting efficiencies and minimum detectable activities for each nuclide were determined under the experimental conditions. These methods are being applied to our service analysis. In order to investigate the sedimentary behaviour of neptunium,237Np together with Pu isotopes and241Am have been measured for the sediment cores collected from Lake Mikata (freshwater) and from Lake Kugushi (brakish water) both belonging to the Mikata Five Lakes, and from Nyu Bay (sea water). In all sediment core samples237Np was detected, and its concentrations were far below those of239,240Pu and241Am measured for the same samples. Inventories of237Np in Lake Mikata, Lake Kugushi and Nyu Bay were estimated to be 0.53, 0.29 and 0.34 MBq/km2, respectively. The activity ratio of237Np/239,240Pu calculted from the inventories in each sediment core was 0.29% for Lake Mikata, 0.15% for Lake Kugushi and 0.10% for Nyu Bay. These values except for the value for Lake Mikata are two or three times lower than the value of 0.3–0.4% observed for surface soils of 0–20 cm depth, suggesting that Np is more soluble compared with Pu.  相似文献
