We report the preparation of nanostructured adaptive polymer surfaces by diffusion of an amphihilic block copolymer toward the interface. The surface segregation of a diblock copolymer, polystyrene‐block‐poly(acrylic acid) (PS‐b‐PAA), occurred when blended with high molecular weight polystyrene employed as a matrix. On annealing, the polymer surfaces changed both the chemical composition and the hydrophilicity depending on the environment and pH, respectively. By exposure to either water vapor or air, the surface wettability varied between hydrophilic and hydrophobic. In addition, surface enrichment on diblock copolymer by water vapor annealing led to self‐assembly occurring at the interface. Hence, nanostructured domains can be observed by AFM in liquid media. Moreover, the PAA segments placed at the interface respond to pH and can switch from an extended hydrophilic state at basic pH values to a collapsed hydrophobic state in acidic media. Accordingly, the surface morphology changed from swelled micelles to nanometer size holes. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 48: 2982–2990, 2010  相似文献

We describe the preparation of surfaces with controlled surface chemistry and topology combining both surface segregation of block copolymers and “breath figures” formation. For that purpose, an amphiphilic ABC triblock copolymer, that is, poly(2,3,4,5,6‐pentafluorostyrene)‐b‐polystyrene‐b‐poly[poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate] (PS5F21b‐PS31b‐PPEGMA38) was mixed with high molecular weight polystyrene and spin coated in a moist atmosphere. As demonstrated by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy analysis, the surfaces exhibit spherical holes with diameters between 100 and 300 nm. The holes, enriched in triblock copolymer, exhibit variable chemical composition and topography depending on the environmental conditions. The surface functionality could be reversibly modulated: whereas under humid conditions the PPEGMA hydrophilic block reorients towards the surface, annealing to dry air directs the PS5F fluorinated block to the interface. Equally, surfaces annealed to humid air changed their topography from holes to islands depending on the extent of swelling of the PPEGMA block. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Herein, we report the preparation of structured multistimuli‐responsive surfaces able to change reversibly both their chemical composition depending on the environment and their surface behavior by varying either/both the pH or/and the temperature. For that purpose, we took advantage of the surface segregation in homopolymer/diblock copolymer blends, composed of either polystyrene‐block‐poly(N,N′‐dimethylaminoethylmethacrylate) (PS‐b‐PDMAEMA) or polystyrene‐block‐poly (N,N′‐diethylaminoethylmethacrylate) (PS‐b‐PDEAEMA) and high molecular weight polystyrene used as a matrix. The variations of the surface composition as a function of the environment of exposure (air or water vapor) was investigated were investigated by XPS and contact angle measurements. The water‐annealed surfaces contain PDMAEMA or PDEAEMA at the surface and are additionally able to respond both to pH and temperature as demonstrated by the Wilhelmy technique. Both PDMAEMA and PDEAEMA can switch from a hydrophilic state to a collapsed hydrophobic state increasing the temperature above the LCST. More interestingly, as a result of the microphase separation of the block copolymers at the interface, the surfaces of the blends exhibit structuration. Thus, either micellar structures or “donut‐like” morphologies were obtained by using THF or toluene, respectively, as solvent. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Hydrogen bonding interactions, phase behavior, crystallization, and surface hydrophobicity in nanostructured blend of bisphenol A‐type epoxy resin (ER), for example, diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) and poly(ε‐caprolactone)‐block‐poly(dimethyl siloxane)‐block‐poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL–PDMS–PCL) triblock copolymer were investigated by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, transmission electron microscopy, small‐angle X‐ray scattering, and contact angle measurements. The PCL–PDMS–PCL triblock copolymer consisted of two epoxy‐miscible PCL blocks and an epoxy‐immiscible PDMS block. The cured ER/PCL–PDMS–PCL blends showed composition‐dependent nanostructures from spherical and worm‐like microdomains to lamellar morphology. FTIR study revealed the existence of hydrogen bonding interactions between the PCL blocks and the cured epoxy, which was responsible for their miscibility. The overall crystallization rate of the PCL blocks in the blend decreased remarkably with increasing ER content, whereas the melting point was slightly depressed in the blends. The surface hydrophobicity of the cured ER increased upon addition of the block copolymer, whereas the surface free energy (γs) values decreased with increasing block copolymer concentration. The hydrophilicity of the epoxy could be reduced through blending with the PCL–PDMS–PCL block copolymer that contained a hydrophobic PDMS block. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this work, a postpolymerization surface modification approach is reported that provides pendent thiol functionality along the polymer brush backbone using the photolabile protection chemistry of both o‐nitrobenzyl and p‐methoxyphenacyl thioethers. Poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (pHEMA) brushes were synthesized via surface‐initiated atom transfer radical polymerization, after which the pHEMA hydroxyl groups were esterified with 3‐(2‐nitrobenzylthio)propanoic acid or 3‐(2‐(4‐methoxyphenyl)‐2‐oxoethylthio)propanoic acid to provide the photolabile protected pendent thiols. Addressing the protecting groups with light not only affords spatial control of reactive thiol functionality but enables a plethora of thiol‐mediated transformations with isocyanates and maleimides providing a modular route to create functional polymer surfaces. This concept was extended to block copolymer brush architectures enabling the modification of the chemical functionality of both the inner and outer blocks of the block copolymer surface. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The surface morphologies of poly(styrene‐b‐4vinylpyridine) (PS‐b‐P4VP) diblock copolymer and homopolystyrene (hPS) binary blend thin films were investigated by atomic force microscopy as a function of total volume fraction of PS (?PS) in the mixture. It was found that when hPS was added into symmetric PS‐b‐P4VP diblock copolymers, the surface morphology of this diblock copolymer was changed to a certain degree. With ?PS increasing at first, hPS was solubilized into the corresponding domains of block copolymer and formed cylinders. Moreover, the more solubilized the hPS, the more cylinders exist. However, when the limit was reached, excessive hPS tended to separate from the domains independently instead of solubilizing into the corresponding domains any longer, that is, a macrophase separation occurred. A model describing transitions of these morphologies with an increase in ?PS is proposed. The effect of composition on the phase morphology of blend films when graphite is used as a substrate is also investigated. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A method is presented for generation of all surface‐bound radicals on solid polymer surfaces. Thus, secondary amide group of newly synthesized crosslinking comonomer, methacryloyloxyethyl methacrylamide was determined as versatile precursor for generation fixed diradicals on solid microspheres, obtained by copolymerization with methyl methacrylate (MMA) in aqueous suspension. Nitrosoation of the secondary amide groups on the microbeads and followed thermolysis above 90 °C was demonstrated to give surface‐bound radicals, capable of initiating polymerization of vinyl monomers, such as; styrene, MMA, N‐vinyl formamide, and N‐vinyl, 2‐pyrrolidone, as evidenced by H NMR, Fourier transform infrared, thermogravimetric analysis, and differential scanning calorimeter techniques. Appreciable grafting yields (55.1%–286.1%) and low free‐homopolymer formation (7.2%–19.7%) were noted within 6 h of the grafting at 100 °C in each case. This strategy involving the use of amide functional crosslinker seemed to be generally applicable to generate surface‐bound radicals for surface‐initiated polymerization from various solid substrates. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization technique was applied to graft polymerize brushes of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and poly(poly(ethylene glycol) monomethacrylate) (PPEGMA) from poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) surfaces. PVDF surfaces were exposed to aqueous LiOH, followed by successive reductions with NaBH4 and DIBAL‐H to obtain hydroxyl functionality. Azo‐functionalities, as surface initiators for grafting, were immobilized on the PVDF surfaces by esterification of 4,4′‐azobis(4‐cyanopentanoic acid) and the surface hydroxyl groups. The chemical composition and surface topography of the graft‐functionalized PVDF surfaces were characterized by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, attenuated total reflectance‐FTIR spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy. Kinetics studies revealed a linear increase in the graft concentration of PMMA and PPEGMA with the reaction time, indicating that the chain growth from the surface was consistent with a “controlled” or “living” process. The living chain ends were used as the macroinitiator for the synthesis of diblock copolymer brushes. Water contact angles on PVDF films were reduced by surface grafting of PEGMA and MMA. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 44: 3071–3082, 2006  相似文献

Water‐swellable biodegradable materials exhibiting mechanically tenacious and tough characters in the wet state were prepared by a simple blend of two enantiomeric polylactide‐grafted dextran copolymers (Dex‐g‐PLLA and Dex‐g‐PDLA). DSC and WAXD analyses demonstrated the formation of SC crystals in the copolymer blend films. SC blend films showed lamellar‐type microphase‐separated structures. When swollen with water, these blend films showed the same level of tensile strengths and Young's modulus as the films in the dry state. SC blend films degraded gradually over a month under physiological conditions with a degradation rate faster than the corresponding Dex‐g‐PLLA films. The SC‐forming enantiomeric mixture of polylactide‐grafted polysaccharides should be a good candidate for an implantable biocompatible material exhibiting favorable mechanical properties and degradation behavior. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis of styrene‐acrylonitrile copolymers by semicontinuous heterophase polymerization is reported here. The effect of feed composition at a fixed addition rate of monomer mixture on kinetics, particle size, polymer content, and molar masses, was studied. This process permits the synthesis of nanolatexes containing narrow size‐distribution particles with number‐average diameter (Dn) of about 18 nm, polymer content as high as 23 wt %, and copolymer‐to‐surfactant weight ratios between 23 and 25, depending on monomer feeding rate, which are larger than those reported for microemulsion copolymerization of several comonomers. Copolymers with homogeneous composition similar to the feeding monomers composition were obtained thorough the reaction, which is difficult to achieve by batch polymerization. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Amphiphilic copolymers of a methacrylic monomer (SiMA) carrying a polysiloxane side chain and an acrylic monomer (ZA) with a mixed poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)‐fluoroalkyl side chain (10–85 mol % ZA) were incorporated as the surface‐active components into poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) network blends at different loadings (1 and 4 wt % with respect to PDMS). Wettability of the coating surfaces was investigated by contact angle measurements, and their surface chemical composition was determined by angle‐resolved X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It was found that the surface segregation of the fluoroalkyl segments of the amphiphilic copolymers was responsible for the high enrichment in fluorine concentration within 10 nm of the coating surface. The PEG segments were also concentrated at the polymer?air interface. The chemical composition of the films was proven to be relatively little affected by immersion in water. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2012  相似文献

The chemical design of a polymer can be tailored by a random or a block sequence of the comonomers in order to influence the properties of the final material. In this work, two sequences, PCPDTBT and F8BT (F8), were polymerized to form a block or a random copolymer. Differences between the various polymers were examined by exploring the surface topography and charge carrier mobility. A distinct surface texture and a higher charge carrier mobility was found for the block copolymer with respect to the other materials. Solar cells were prepared with polymer:PC71BM blend active layers and the best performance of up to 2% was found for the block copolymer, which was a direct result of the fill factor. Overall, the sequences of different copolymers for solar cell applications were varied and a positive impact on efficiency was found when the block copolymer structure was utilized. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The miscibility and underlying hydrogen‐bonding interactions of blends of a fluorinated copolymer containing pyridine and a nonfluorinated copolymer containing methacrylic acid were studied with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), transmission Fourier transform infrared (TX‐FTIR) spectroscopy, and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), whereas the surface properties of the blends were investigated with contact‐angle measurements, time‐of‐flight secondary‐ion mass spectroscopy, XPS, and attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. DSC studies showed that the presence of a sufficient amount of 4‐vinylpyridine units in the fluorinated copolymer produced miscible blends with the nonfluorinated copolymer containing methacrylic acid. TX‐FTIR and XPS showed the existence of pyridine–acid interpolymer hydrogen‐bonding interactions. Even though the anchoring effect of hydrogen bonding hindered the migration of the fluorinated component to the blend surface, it could not completely eliminate the surface enrichment of the fluorinated component and the surface rearrangement of the fluorinated pendant chain. The air–blend interface was mainly occupied by the fluorinated pendant chain, and the surface energies of the blends were extremely low, even with only 1.5 wt % of the fluorinated component in the blends. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The surface modification of polystyrene (PS) by the blending of 4‐acetoxystyrene polymers and their corresponding hydrolysis products, 4‐hydroxystyrene polymers, was investigated on the basis of X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and contact‐angle measurements. According to XPS and AFM measurements, when polystyrene‐block‐poly(4‐acetoxystyrene) (PS‐b‐PAS) or polystyrene‐block‐poly(4‐hydroxystyrene) (PS‐b‐PHS) was incorporated into PS, the block copolymer was preferentially segregated at the highest surface region of the blend. This segregation increased to a plateau value when more than 5 wt % of either PS‐b‐PHS or PS‐b‐PAS was added. The contact angle of the modified PS by PS‐b‐PAS or PS‐b‐PHS was slightly lower than that of homopolystyrene, but no further decrease was observed with the blend ratio of the diblock copolymer increasing from 5 to 20 wt %. For a PS/PS‐b‐PHS blend, the surface atomic concentration ratio O/C increased linearly with the molecular weight of poly(4‐hydroxystyrene) blocks in diblock copolymer PS‐b‐PHS in the range of our study. The different structures of 4‐acetoxystyrene polymers and their hydrazinolyzed materials may affect the surface compositions of their blends with PS; among these polymers, PS‐b‐PHS and PS‐b‐PAS appeared to be most effective. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A dual‐functional copolymer, poly(4‐styrenesulfonyl azide‐cot‐butyl‐methacrylate), with built‐in photoacid labile and photocrosslinkable components was designed and synthesized by radical copolymerization. The mixture of copolymer and photoacid generators was spin coated on aminosilane treated Si wafers and polycarbonate (PC). When exposed to 365 nm UV light, photoacids were generated, which decomposed the acid labile groups, t‐butyl‐ester, to carboxylic acid in the exposed region, leading to drastic change of wettability from hydrophobic to hydrophilic after developing the film in an aqueous base solution. The patterned polymer film could be subsequently photoimmobilized on the substrate under 254 nm deep UV exposure through C? H insertion via exited azide groups. 1H‐NMR and Fourier transform infrared spectra confirmed the synthesis of the copolymer, and the photodecomposition and photografting reactions occurred orthogonally at 365 and 254 nm, respectively, without interfering each other. On the patterned surfaces, including a hexagonal dot array and a gradient line array, we demonstrated selective wetting in the 365 nm exposed regions. On the gradient line array, we showed an interesting ratchet wetting pattern. Finally, we showed that the copolymer could be used to modify the wettability of PC while maintaining its high optical quality. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A prototypical semiconducting bicomponent system consisting of a conjugated polymer, that is, poly(3‐hexylthiophene) (P3HT), blended with a small thiophene containing conjugated molecule, that is, an alkyl‐substituted bisphenyl‐bithiophene [phenylene–thiophene–thiophene–phenylene (PTTP)], has been used as an electroactive active layer in field‐effect transistors (FETs). The self‐assembly of this bicomponent system at surfaces has been studied at different length scales, from the nanoscale to the macroscale, and compared with the behavior of monocomponent films of PTTP and P3HT. The correlation between morphology and electric properties of the semiconducting material is explored by fabricating prototypes of FETs varying the relative concentrations of the two‐component blend. The maximum charge carrier mobility value, achieved with a few percent of PTTP component, is not simply due to a uniform dispersion of the molecules in the polymer matrix, but rather to the generation of very long percolation paths, whose composition and electrical properties can be tuned with the PTTP concentration. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The surface composition in spin‐coated films of polyfluorene:fullerene blends was determined quantitatively by near‐edge X‐ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy. By comparing partial and total electron yield spectra, we found vertical compositional differences in the surface region. Furthermore, the orientation of the polymer chains was investigated by variable‐angle NEXAFS. Blend films of poly[(9,9‐dioctylfluorenyl‐2,7‐diyl)‐co‐5,5‐(4′,7′‐di‐2‐thienyl‐2′,1′,3′‐benzothiadiazole] with [6,6]‐phenyl‐C61‐butyric acid methyl ester in two different blend ratios were studied. Results showed polymer enrichment of the surfaces for films with a polymer:fullerene weight ratio of 20:80 and of 50:50, spin‐coated from both chlorobenzene and chloroform solutions. The angular dependence of the NEXAFS spectra of the pure polymer films showed a preferential plane‐on orientation, which was slightly stronger in the subsurface region than at the surface. In blend films, this orientational preference was less pronounced and the difference between surface and subsurface vanished. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report the synthesis, characterization, and solvent‐induced structure formation in thin films of an amphiphilic rod‐coil conjugated block copolymer, poly(3‐hexylthiophene)‐b‐poly(ethylene oxide). The diblock copolymers were prepared by a facile click reaction and their characterizations as well as thermal, crystalline, optical properties, and self‐assembly behavior have been investigated in detail. A series of morphologies including two‐phase separated nanostructure, nanofibrils, and their mixed morphology could be obtained depending on the selectivity of solvents to different blocks. Structural analyses demonstrate there is a subtle balance between microphase separation of copolymer and the π‐π stacking of the conjugated P3HT and such balance can be controlled by changing the solvents of different selectivity in solution and the length of P3HT block. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polymeric films with porous structures and microsphere patterns were prepared by the method of breath figures, mixing poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and amphiphilic copolymers containing glucose moieties in their structure, glycopolymers. Statistical and block glycopolymers were used in a proportion of 10 wt %. The statistical glycopolymers were synthesized via conventional free radical copolymerization, whereas the block copolymer of methyl methacrylate and 2‐{[(D ‐glucosamin‐2‐Nyl) carbonyl]oxy}ethyl methacrylate, PMMA‐b‐PHEMAGl, was obtained by atom transfer radical polymerization. Glycopolymers were blended with a high molecular weight PMMA matrix and dissolved in a mixture of tetrahydrofuran and a small amount of water. Results showed that, depending on experimental conditions (water content, humidity, and type of copolymer), the observed final film morphology changes significantly. Thus, films with honeycomb pattern structures, spherical particles, or a mixture of both were obtained. In addition, polar glucose moieties were oriented principally either inside of the pores in the case of films and towards the surface in the case of particles. The specific surface bioactivity of these materials was examined using the specific lectin concanavalin A conjugated with fluorescein, Con A‐FITC. The successful binding of the Con A was demonstrated by fluorescence microscopy being more intense at the surface of the pores and of the particles. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Blending of ethylene/1‐octene copolymers can be used to achieve a well‐controlled broad chemical composition distribution (CCD) required in several polyolefin applications. The CCD of copolymer blends can be estimated using crystallization analysis fractionation (CRYSTAF) or crystallization elution fractionation (CEF). Unfortunately, both techniques may be affected by the cocrystallization of chains with different compositions, leading to profiles that do not truly reflect the actual CCD of the polymer. Therefore, understanding how the polymer microstructure and the analytical conditions influence copolymer cocrystallization is critical for the proper interpretation of CRYSTAF and CEF curves. In this investigation, we studied the effect of chain crystallizabilities, blend compositions, and cooling rates on cocrystallization during CEF and CRYSTAF analysis. Cocrystallization is more prevalent when the copolymer blend has components with similar crystallizabilities, one of the components is present in much higher amount, and fast cooling rates are used. CEF was found to provide better CCD estimates than CRYSTAF in a much shorter analysis time. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys, 2011  相似文献
