ABSTRACT

We prepared a homologous series of H-shaped liquid crystals I-n and investigated their phase transition properties using optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. All the compounds exhibited a nematic phase at room temperature. The phase transition behaviour is explained in terms of molecular shape anisotropy. Furthermore, those compounds were found to exhibit electro-optical switching in the isotropic liquid in the vicinity of the nematic–isotropic liquid transition, indicating that the microscopic nematic order with a certain coherence length of the molecules exists in the optically isotropic temperature range.  相似文献

Simultaneous measurements of the rate of heat evolution and changes of the mechanical variable of a transformation such as volume or pressure, performed in a p-V-T controlled scanning calorimeter have been applied to investigations of phase transitions in liquid crystals. In the instrument, the phase transitions can be induced by a controlled change of pressure, volume or temperature under isothermal, isobaric or isochoric conditions respectively. The present investigations have ben performed on 4-n-penthyl-penthylthiol-4-decycloxybenzoate which demonstrates in the liquid crystal state a nematic and three smectic phases
Zusammenfassung In einem p-V-T-kontrollierten Scanning Kalorimeter wurden zur Untersuchung der Phasenumwandlungen in Flüssigkeitskristallen simultane Messungen der Geschwindigkeit der Wärmeentwicklung und der Veränderungen von mechanischen Größen von Umwandlungen, wie z.B. von Volumen oder Druck durchgeführt. In diesem Gerät kann die Phasenumwandlung durch eine kontrollierte Veränderung von Druck, Volumen oder Temperatur unter isothermen, isobaren oder isochoren Bedingungen ausgelöst werden. Vorliegende Untersuchungen wurden an 4-n-Pentyl-phenylthiol-4-dezyloxybenzoat durchgeführt, welches im Flüssigkristallzustand eine nematische und drei smektische Phasen aufweist.

This review describes recent developments in the field of liquid–crystalline suspensions of mineral nanoparticles. New families of chemical compounds have been investigated in the last few years. The most common mesophases (nematic, lamellar and columnar) have now been discovered in dispersions of disc-like and rod-like nanoparticles. New research thrusts presently focus on more subtle thermodynamic effects such as those of polydispersity and gravity. The specific physical properties brought by the mineral building blocks to the liquid–crystalline phases are now being examined. Mesomorphic ordering of the nanoparticles is increasingly used in materials science for templating and for preparing composites.  相似文献

Here, we report a simple and label-free methodology for real-time monitoring of adsorption of proteins such as bovine serum albumin (BSA), concanavalin A (ConA) (a lectin) and cathepsin D (CathD) (a tumour marker) on micrometer-sized poly (L-lysine) (PLL) functionalised liquid crystal (LC) droplets dispersed in aqueous phases. Earlier, we had demonstrated that PLL, a positively charged natural peptide, can induce homeotropic ordering of LCs at LC-aqueous interface, and thus PLL-adsorbed LC droplets showed radial director configuration. Herein, it was observed that subsequent non-specific adsorption of anionic proteins such as BSA, ConA and CathD can trigger a quick transition in director configuration of PLL-LC droplets (primarily dominated by electrostatic interactions) to pre-radial or bipolar, thus acting as a simple optical probe for detection of these proteins up to μg/mL of concentrations. Further, the detection limits for these proteins are found to vary (BSA<ConA<CathD) which follow the similar order as their anionic charges, thus suggesting the role of different binding affinities of protein-PLL in realising the director configuration of LC droplets. Overall, this study offers new pathways utilising ordering transition in LC droplets which will strengthen the principles to recognise biomolecular interactions for various interfacial and sensing applications.  相似文献

Abstract

We describe here a novel technique which makes use of the photothermal mirage effect to study phase transition in liquid crystals. Results of the measurements done with two nematic liquid crystals are given to illustrate this technique. We observe an enhancement in the signal amplitude during phase change which is due to the large magnitude of the refractive index gradient developing at the transition temperature.  相似文献

Summary The present study demonstrates the use of the p-butoxy homologue and of the liquid crystal: N,N-Bis(p-methoxybenzylidene)-,-bi-p-toluidine itself (BMBT) as the stationary phase in glass capillary columns. We have studied the influence of surface treatment of the glass wall on column performance and the effects on selectivity if BMBT is blended with conventional phases like OV-1 and OV-101.  相似文献

As the first examples of axially chiral ionic liquids, new pyridinium salts having a 1,3-dioxan ring in their central core were synthesized. Enantioselective dehydrohalogenation using chiral alkoxides provided a simple and practical approach for their synthesis. Recently, many cosmetic researchers have been focused on multiple emulsions due to better performance. Limited application of multiple emulsions has been attributed to their instability, which can be resolved by the presence of liquid crystals. Multiple emulsions containing liquid crystals are affected by various formulation parameters, such as liquid oils. In this paper, the influence of liquid oils on the formation mechanism was studied. Besides, stability, small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) spectra analysis, and rheological analysis of the emulsions were investigated as well. The results showed that when the gap of the polarity between inner oils and external liquid oils is greater, the multiple structures were more easily formed. Multiple emulsions containing liquid crystals were superior in stability to multiple emulsions prepared in the same way with liquid oils that did not form liquid crystals. SAXS indicated that the liquid crystal orientation was lamellar. Rheological analysis indicated that the different structure emulsions showed shear-thinning behavior. The presence of liquid crystal decreased the viscosity and resulted in pseudoplastic enhancement. Both the storage modulus (G′) and the loss modulus (G″) of multiple emulsions were slightly higher than those of O/W-type emulsions, implying the existence of multiple structures.  相似文献

Among the achievements of 20th century, there is the origin and violent development of the low-temperature technique and low-temperature spectroscopy of molecular crystals in the polarized light. Many obtained results became possible due to the close cooperation between experiment investigators and theorists. This short review traces the evolution of only one trend in the physics of molecular crystals, namely, the investigation of energetic and spatial structure of molecules from the analysis of electronic spectra of molecular crystals. First, for this purpose the possibilities of using the electronic spectra of molecular crystals at low temperatures benzene derivatives and the electronic spectra of liquid ionic crystals are considered. The results of investigations of the electronic absorption spectra for the new class of liquid crystals, namely, ionic metal-organic smectics are presented. Changes in the structure of doping molecules in the ionic liquid crystals under the influence of the dc electric field are analyzed.  相似文献

We demonstrate that ferroelectric liquid crystals dispersed in a polymer matrix can form uniaxially aligned elliptical droplets. The alignment is controlled by mechanical shear during the polymerization of a UV-curable adhesive. The possibility of prealignment makes polymer-dispersed ferroelectric liquid crystals suitable for application in flexible electro-optical displays. In contrast to surface stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal displays, the electro-optical effect in our system is due to the deformed-helix ferroelectric (DHF) effect.  相似文献

Novel kinds of polymerised ionic liquid crystals (PILCs) bearing imidazolium and bipyridinium groups were synthesised and characterised in this work. Some bromo-polyesters were synthesised in an esterification chain reaction using 2,3-dibromosuccinyl dichloride, isophthaloyl chloride and 4,4′-biphenol. The polyester imidazolium bromides (PIBs) and polyester dipyridinium bromides (PDBs) were obtained by a quaternisation reaction between the bromo-polyesters, N-methylimidazole and 4-4′-bipyridine, respectively. The polyester imidazolium tetrafluoroborates (PITs) and polyester dipyridinium tetrafluoroborates (PDTs) were synthesised using the corresponding PIBs and PDBs in an anion-exchange reaction. The chemical structures, liquid crystalline properties and molecular weights of these polymers were characterised by multiple experimental techniques. All the PILCs including PIBs, PDBs, PITs and PDTs display smectic A phase on heating and cooling cycles. The liquid-crystalline properties of bromo-polyesters are influenced by the length of flexible spacer and composition of polyester backbones, while those of PILCs are determined by the ionic groups as additional important influent factors. In comparison with those of the mother bromo-polyesters, the d-spacing of PILCs reduced slightly due to Im+–Br?, Dp+–Br?, Im+–BF4? and Dp+–BF4? ion pairs in the polymer systems. Monocationic imidazolium salts display weaker interionic and intermolecular interaction, higher mobility and lower viscosity than dicationic dipyridinium salts.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In this short review we summarise already published results to manifest very important role of high order elastic terms in the formation of colloidal structures in nematic liquid crystals (NLC). We reveal that every colloidal particle in nematics can be effectively represented as a triad of nonzero elastic moments. Usually colloidal particles in NLCs are treated with their elastic dipole and/or quadrupole moments only. But we demonstrate that octupole, hexadecapole and even 64-pole moments play an important role as well and determine parameters of different 1D, 2D and even 3D colloidal crystals in NLCs. In general the triad of the first three nonzero elastic moments can describe almost all colloidal structures observed so far. Dipole particles should be considered as hard spheroids with a triad of the dipole, quadrupole and octupole moments. Quadrupole particles should be treated as hard spheres with a triad of quadrupole, hexadecapole and 64-pole elastic moments

Experiments on the mixture of liquid crystals and nonmesogenic impurities showed the significant role of nonmesogenic impurities on the nematic–smectic-A phase transition. Using both Flory–Huggins theory of isotropic mixing and Landau–de Gennes theory, we present a phenomenological theory that discusses the role of such impurities on the nematic–smectic-A phase transition in a mixture of smectic liquid crystal and nonmesogenic impurities. We discuss the impact of nonmesogenic impurities on the order parameters, Frank elastic constants (splay and bend) and transition temperature of the nematic–smectic-A phase transition. Our theoretical results show that there exists a tricritical point for which the second-order nematic–smectic-A phase transition becomes first order at a tricritical point by increasing the concentration of nonmesogenic solute. We find a remarkable agreement between theoretical and experimental results.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This article summarises recent advances made in our laboratory towards the development of new technological applications, such as biosensors and organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) based on liquid crystals (LCs) other than LC displays. The study of biomolecular interaction using LC material relies on the specific interaction between the LC and the biomolecule of interest at interfaces that permit the biomolecular events to be amplified into easily measured signals for various sensing applications. In the first part, we emphases recent studies in the design and modulation of LC-based interfaces based on robust colloidal LC gels for biological amplification, qualitative and quantitative understanding of important biomolecular interactions at LC–aqueous interfaces for diagnostic and laboratory applications and design of LC droplets that hold promise to act as a marker for cells and cell-based interactions. In the second part, we described design of organic materials for application in OLEDs on various discotic monomers, dimers and oligomers. These molecules have the ability to transport charges, holes and electrons. In addition, because of the high conductivity and ππ stacking, they are considered as the advanced materials for practical applications. The technological advances in our laboratory using discotic LCs will be briefly presented in this article.  相似文献

We demonstrate induced orientational transition of liquid crystal (LC) E7 between two optical fibre tips in a gravitational field as a result of minimising the free energy. The LC orientational transition is from a homeotropic state, with respect to fibre tip, to a tilted state as the spacing between two fibre tips is increased. The orientational distortion introduces birefringence in the optical fibre that changes the polarised direction of the output light. At short spacing, the undistorted homeotropic orientation of LC is preferred. However, at longer spacing, a distorted orientation is preferred. Once the LC director profile is known, a Finite Difference Time Domain method is used to calculate the optical properties, which agree well with the experimental results.  相似文献

In this study, the synthesis, structural characterisation and mesomorphic and optical properties of seven new bent-shaped and polycatenar bent-shaped compounds derived from chalcone and cyanopyridine are reported. The mesomorphic behaviour was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarised optical microscopy (POM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) and correlated with the molecular structure. Two bent-core hexacatenars molecules (Ic and IIc) presented liquid crystalline properties, showing a hexagonal columnar (Colh) phases at room temperature, being each disc constituted by two mesogens. Optical studies were also performed for the final molecules, being conducted by ultraviolet-visible and fluorescence spectrometry. The cyanopyridine derivatives show moderate luminescence quantum yields, ranging between 18% and 27%, with emission maxima around 371 nm. It is also shown that while the chalcone central unit favours a calamitic liquid crystalline behaviour in molecules with lower number of aliphatic chains, a polycatenar structure with cyanopyridine as the central unit favours a Colh arrangement, also providing luminescence properties to the molecule.  相似文献

The fluorine-substituted benzoate ester rod-shaped liquid crystals containing an azobenzene side chain linked with terminal double bonds were synthesized and characterized.The mesophase and photoswitching properties were determined by polarizing optical microscopy(POM),differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) and UV-visible spectrometry.The rod-shaped compound 4a having an odd number of carbon atoms in the alkyl chains exhibits nematic phase and SmA type phase whereas compound 4b having an even number of carbon atoms showed only nematic phase.Both fluorinecontaining compounds 4c and 4d showed only SmA type phases.The photoswitching properties of these compounds showed a rate of trans to cis isomerization ranging 19-20 s,whereas reverse process took around 230 min in solution.These materials may be ideal in the field of optically rewritable applications where both on and off rates should be crucial.  相似文献
