A series of new chalcones with four aromatic rings is synthesised and characterised. The chemical structures of chalcones are evaluated by Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis, 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic techniques. The compounds were investigated for liquid crystalline properties using differential scanning calorimetry and polarising optical microscopy with hot stage. The results indicate that the formation of mesophase type is dependent on the alkyl chain length at one end of the molecule. Compounds 9a–d with relatively shorter chains show SmA and nematic mesophases, whereas 9e–g exhibit SmC and SmA mesophases. Compound 9h having a cyano group at one end, exhibit SmA and nematic mesophases.  相似文献

Liquid-crystalline 3,3′-dimethyl-2,2′-bipyridyl derivatives with long 4-(alkoxyphenyl)ethynyl (-C≡C-C6H4-OR) groups in the 5,5′-positions were synthesized by palladium-catalysed crosscoupling reactions. The compounds exhibit exclusively nematic behaviour; for example, the hexyl derivative showed a nematic phase over the temperature range 145.2–205.0°C. On increasing the length of the terminal chain, the transition temperatures were lowered; for example, the hexadecyl derivative was nematic in the range 117.0–126.8°C.  相似文献

A new family of four-ring achiral bent-core compounds derived from 2-methyl 3-amino benzoic acid with the methyl group in the bent direction incorporated into the central core have been designed and synthesised. These compounds possess an alkoxy chain attached at only one end of the bent core molecule, while the other arm consists of a biphenyl moiety possessing a highly polar cyano-group. The molecular structure has been confirmed by elemental analysis and spectroscopic data, and the thermal behaviour and phase characterisation has been investigated by differential scanning calorimetry and polarising microscopy. All the compounds exhibit a wide-range enantiotropic nematic phase. A comparison with non-mesomorphic unsubstituted and 4-methyl-substituted homologues is also presented.  相似文献

Compounds that are modifications of curcumin were synthesised and their mesogenic properties were studied. The central keto-enolic ring in curcumin was replaced by either a pyrazole or an isoxazole ring. This gives compounds that can form liquid crystalline phases. When two alkoxy chains are attached to the molecule, nematic and lamellar phases appear; in the case of six alkoxy chains, a hexagonal columnar phase is created. The columnar phase is constructed from columns that in the cross-section have two molecules. The pyrazole derivatives in the columnar phase preserve N–H–N hydrogen bonding.  相似文献

A new series of liquid crystal (LC) monomers – not only contain a double bond but also contain an azo group – were designed and synthesised. The length of side groups in the LC monomers containing azobenzene ester varied from 1 to 2 methylene units, and the length of the substituted groups in the main chain varied from 1 to 3 methylene units. The molecular structures of the intermediates and target compounds were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared, ultraviolet and visible spectrum and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The thermal phase behaviour of the LC monomers was investigated by polar optical microscopy coupled with hot stage and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). In this paper, the effect on the LC zone with the substituents were investigated, and with the increased methylene of main chain, the melting point and the phase transition temperature of the substance will be lowered and LC regions will be narrower.  相似文献

New bent-core molecules with 4,6-dichlororesorcinol or 4-chloro-2-methylresorcinol as the central unit, and azobenzene with different alkyloxy chain length as side arms were synthesised. The mesophase behaviour of the new compounds was investigated by polarising optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction studies and electro-optical measurements. It is found that 4,6-dichlororesorcinol is more conducive towards mesomorphism than 4-chloro-2-methylresorcinol. The liquid crystalline properties of all of the prepared compounds are greatly affected by the lateral substitution on the outer ring. 4,6-Dichlororesorcinol-based compounds without lateral substitution show nematic phases with cybotactic cluster of the SmC-type (NCybC). Moreover, depending on the chain length, the nematic phase appears as enantiotropic phase for the shortest homologue and as monotropic phase for the higher homologues.  相似文献

A new series of azobenezene liquid crystals (LCs) was designed and synthesised by known and straightforward methods. The central connecting cores of the molecules varied viz., benzene/naphthalene/biphenyl. The molecular structures were confirmed by infrared, UV, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic techniques. The LC texture and thermal phase behaviours were investigated by polarising optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. Smectic B phase was found in biphenyl-derived azobenzene ester. The effect of central core on LC properties was investigated. The decreased angle at central connecting core suppressed the melting points, phase transition temperatures without losing LC properties, whereas, in moderate angle compounds LC properties were suppressed. The compounds with increased angle at central core favours rich mesomorphism.  相似文献

A series of cholesteryl-containing imidazolium chlorides and imidazolium tetrachloroaluminates were synthesised, and the chemical structure, liquid crystalline behaviour and ionic conductivity were characterised by several technical methods. Whereas the imidazolium chlorides show chiral smectic A (SmA*) phase on heating and cooling cycles, the imidazolium tetrachloroaluminates display chiral nematic (N*) phase, which is uncommon for ionic liquid crystals (ILCs). The imidazolium chlorides display similar phase transition temperature and entropy, indicating the cholesteryl component influence predominately on the phase transition rather than the different alkyl substituent groups. The imidazolium tetrachloroaluminates show lower melting point temperatures and lower clear point temperature than the imidazolium chlorides. The mesophases exist at rather moderate temperatures. Non-mesomorphic imidazolium tetrachloroaluminate(III) salts with short alkyl substituents have been known for a long time, and the synthesised imidazolium tetrachloroaluminates are the first examples of tetrahalogenoaluminate(III)-containing ILCs. For the imidazolium tetrachloroaluminates, imidazolium cations combine loosely with AlCl4? ions because AlCl4? ions are large and occupy more space in spite of the hydrogen bond and electrostatic attraction interaction, indicating that the layer structure can be destroyed easily to form N* phase on heating.  相似文献

After preparing a homologous series of tetrameric mesogenic compounds in which two U-shaped molecules were connected via a rigid benzene derivative or a flexible alkyl chain, we investigated their phase transition behaviour using optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction analysis. The compounds possessing an alkyl spacer as the central group exhibited nematic and smectic A phases just as the corresponding U-shaped molecule did. The compound possessing a 1,2-benzene unit as the connecting group showed nematic and smectic A phases, although the compound possessing a 1,3-benzene unit exhibited only an anticlinic smectic C phase. Structure–property relations of the liquid crystalline tetramers are interpreted in terms of preorganised effects of the four mesogenic units.  相似文献

Schiff base ligand N,N′-di-(4-butylsalicylidene)-1′,3′-diaminopropane [H2L] was synthesised by the reaction of substituted azobenzene and 1,3-diaminopropane in 2:1 molar ratio. Four mononuclear lanthanide complexes of the type [Ln(H2L)LCl] (Ln = LaIII, CeIII, SmIII and GdIII) were synthesised and characterised by 1H,13C NMR, fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, elemental analysis (CHNO), gas chromotography-mass, magnetic susceptibility and molar conductivity. Thermal properties of the title compounds were studied using the thermogravimetric analysis/differential scanning calorimetry (TGA/DSC) and optical polarising microscopy (OPM). We report on the observation of relaxation phenomena with extremely long relaxation times, amounting to several hours. These effects take place in some liquid crystal mixtures exhibiting ferroelectric and antiferroelectric dipole order. The observed phenomena are connected with the transformation from the supercooled ferroelectric state to another, metastable state. This transition may be described using a Debye type relaxation formula. At low temperatures, a second slow transition takes place: from the metastable intermediate state to the antiferroelectric phase. This transition is characterized by unidimensional growth of the antiferroelectric domains with a constant velocity. Close to the lower temperature limit of existence of the ferroelectric phase, a direct transition from the ferroelectric to the antiferroelectric phase takes place. This transition is described by an Avrami model, hence it is governed by the creation and growth of nuclei of the antiferroelectric phase.  相似文献

The synthesis and characterisation of some new liquid crystalline (LC) heteroaromatic compounds containing the five-membered pyrazole/isoxazole rings is reported. Some of the compounds exhibited enantiotropic LC properties. The transition temperatures and LC textures of the mesophases were determined using polarised optical microscopy (POM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray studies. The five-membered heterocyclic compounds with the pyrazole core exhibit smectic C (SmC) phase, whereas isoxazoles show SmC and nematic (N) phases.  相似文献

A series of symmetrical trimeric liquid crystalline compounds of which the molecular structure with a central core of 1,3,5-benzene attached by three rod-like mesogenic Schiff base moieties via the propylene spacers and ether linkages has successfully been synthesised and characterised by infra red and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic techniques. All the star-shaped compounds in this series exhibit predominantly SmC phase except the analogue possessing terminal C8H17 group. It is apparent that the members with even parity from C10H21 to C16H33 show enantiotropic SmC phase while the member with longest terminal chain of C18H37 is inclined to monotropic smectogen. The X-ray diffraction measurements reveal that the tilted smectic layer structures of the SmC phase are confirmed to have an obvious sharp peak at small angles of 2θ ~ 1.03°–1.48° with d-spacing values of 4.01–4.58 nm, which are corresponding to tilt angles of ~48° in the SmC phase.  相似文献

Four series of high birefringence biphenyl tolane liquid crystals having a terminal isothiocyanato or fluoro group were synthesized; their mesomorphic properties were studied by optical polarizing microscopy and DSC. These biphenyl tolane compounds exhibit reasonably low melting points and high birefringence of 0.37–0.49. By using these compounds a eutectic mixture was formulated exhibiting a wide nematic range, high figure‐of‐merit and low viscosity.  相似文献

A series of electron-deficient 1-hydroxy-2,3,5,6,7-pentaalkoxyanthra-9,10-quinones has been synthesized. All nine members of the series were found to be liquid crystalline, forming columnar mesophases over a broad temperature range. Such supramolecular building blocks can be used for the preparation of novel discotic dimers, oligomers, polymers and metallomesogens.  相似文献

We have discovered that ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) can be used as a central unit for the synthesis of bent-core liquid crystals (BC LCs). Two series of EDOT-based BC LCs are prepared via Sonogashira coupling reaction. The mesophase behaviour of all the compounds was characterised using a combination of polarising optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction measurements. EDOT-based three-ring compounds were found to be nonliquid crystalline, while all the four derivatives of five-ring series, including a branched alkoxy chain derivative, display enantiotropic nematic phase over wide temperature range. The bent angle of these compounds is about 153°, which falls in between typical rod-like and banana liquid crystals. The transition temperature of branched alkoxy chain compound is lower than straight alkoxy chain compounds. The detailed XRD investigations of all the mesogens corroborate the presence of nematic phase.  相似文献

Two series of chiral and achiral 4-[(3-n-alkoxycarbonylpyridyl)-6-ethynyl]phenyl 4-(trans-4-n-alkylcyclohexyl)benzoate liquid crystals have been synthesized. Their mesomorphic properties were observed and measured by polarizing optical microscopy and DSC. A broad chiral smectic C phase was observed when terminal chains contained a chiral centre.  相似文献

This review examines in some detail the effect of terminal and lateral nitro substitutions in achiral calamitic liquid crystals on their physico-chemical properties.
