A crystalline substrate such as mica or gypsum can orient a thin layer of nematic liquid crystal spread on top. By adsorbing one or more other kinds of molecules onto the surface, we have observed transitions in the orientation of the molecules on the surface. These “anchoring transitions” are analyzed via Landau-Ginzburg theory and may be first or second-order. The second-order anchoring transition is the first two-dimensional system where critical fluctuations may be observed optically. 相似文献

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy has provided a unique opportunity to study the characteristic smectic-A to chiral nematic phase transition in a dimesogenic liquid crystal (“KI-5S”). The order parameters in the liquid crystalline phases were obtained from the 2H NMR quadrupole splitting and 13C NMR chemical shift measurements, manifesting a first-order smectic-nematic phase transition. 相似文献

In this paper, a rotational invariant of interaction energy between two biaxial-shaped molecules is assumed and in the mean field approximation, nine elastic constants for simple distortion patterns in biaxial nematics are derived in terms of the thermal average (Dmn^(l)) (Dm'n'^(l')), where Dmn^(l) is the Wigner rotation matrix. In the lowest order terms, the elastic constants depend on coefficients Γ,Γ', λ, order parameters Q0 = Q0(D00^(2)) +Q2(D02^(2)+D0-2^(2)) and Q2 = Q0(D20^(2)) + Q2(D22^(2)+D2-2^(2)). Here Γ and Γ' depend on the function form of molecular interaction energy vj′j″j (τ12) and probability function fk′k″k (τ12), where r12 is the distance between two molecules, and λ is proportional to temperature. Q0 and Q2 are parameters related to multiple moments of molecules. Comparing these results with those obtained from Landau-de Gennes theory, we have obtained relationships between coefficients, order parameters used in both theories. In the special case of uniaxial nematics, both results are reduced to a degenerate case where K11=K33. 相似文献

We develop a method by which certain classical equations of state may be modified to produce nonclassical critical scaling behavior. We then apply this method to the classical free energy describing a tricritical point that was originally introduced by Griffiths. The phase behavior of the resulting nonclassical free energy is characterized by the competition between critical scaling and tricritical scaling already envisioned by previous authors.Work supported by the National Science Foundation and the Cornell University Materials Science Center.Footnotes 3–10 of Ref. 1 provide a comprehensive list of experimental investigations of tricritical points in fluid mixtures. 相似文献

One discusses phenomenologically the statics and dynamics of surface anchoring of nematic liquid crystals. In statics, for
symmetrical situations, one can induce, under the action of an external field, a surface breaking with a bifurcation between
two opposite orientations of the director. In dynamics, one shows that the surface director relaxation is intrinsically fast,
and accompanied by a transient surface shear flow. In thin cells with planar anchorings, filled by cyanobiphenyl materials
which orient normal to the plates under a strong electric field, there are now two effects which couple the relaxation of
the surface director: a static one, which favors parallel orientation and a uniform cell texture, and a transient dynamical
coupling from the surface flow, which forces π-twisted texture. With suitable electric signals, one can control the surface
bifurcations to give at will one of these two bistable textures. Results are presented which show that these mechanisms could
lead to a new class of surface controlled, fast nematic bistable displays.

A new scheme for recording a dynamic phase grating with an asymmetric profile in C60-doped homeotropically aligned nematic liquid crystal(NLC) was presented.An oblique incidence beam was used to record the thin asymmetric dynamic phase holographic grating.The diffraction efficiency we achieved is more than 40%,exceeding the theoretical limit for symmetric profile gratings.Both facts can be explained by assuming that a grating with an asymmetric saw-tooth profile is formed in the NLC.Finally,physical mechanism and mathematical model for characterizing the asymmetric phase holographic grating were presented,based on the photo-refractive-like(PR-like) effect. 相似文献

The kinetics of the phase separation and the nematic phase growth in two melted commercial multi-component liquid crystal mixtures upon cooling was studied using polarising optical microscopy and IR spectrometry. The droplets of the nematic phase revealed in the optical images across the phase transition were segmented and treated statistically. In the resulting size histograms of mixture B, two overlapping statistical ensembles related to two co-existing nematic phases were recognised; these phases were shown to be different in their chemical structures. In mixture A, any separation within the nematic phase was not found. The statistical ensembles of the nematic droplets were successfully described using the principles of irreversible thermodynamics. Analysis of the mean droplet diameter as a function of time allowed recognition of two regimes of the nematic phase evolution: (1) nucleation and rapid nucleus growth and (2) nucleus coalescence. Both the regimes were quantitatively described with the universal law for the cluster growth. 相似文献

Symmetry of a nematic liquid crystal phase is broken by an anchoring wall and also by an external field. Nematic system sandwiched
between biaxial anchoring walls is introduced as a correspondent to a bulk nematic system exposed to a couple of fields, an
electric field and a magnetic one in directions perpendicular to each other, and thermal behaviours of the system are studied.
The crossover between a homeotropic structure and homogeneous one occurs, similarly to the bulk system in the fields, in which
the anchoring condition of coexistence is shown to have the same expression as the one at the bulk. As to a characteristic
phenomenon at the sandwiched system, it is proved that an appearance of a biaxial nematic order suppresses a uniaxial nematic
order. A surface transition, i.e., a wetting phenomenon is shown to occur also in the biaxial nematics, even though the uniaxial
