In the frame of formulation of W/O emulsions entrapping polysaccharides devoted to agricultural applications, the aim of this work was to study the stability over time of these emulsions, stabilized with either soybean lecithin or polyglycerol polyricinoleate (PGPR) as emulsifiers. Emulsifiers were dissolved in oil phase, and polysaccharides (carboxymethycellulose (CMC), guar, xanthan) in ultrapure water. Emulsions stability was studied through natural aging tests and accelerated aging tests, using bottle tests, microscopy and calorimetry. Experiments showed that PGPR was more efficient than lecithin to stabilize emulsions containing the polysaccharides studied, and that emulsions prepared with CMC showed the best stability.  相似文献

The stability of 30 heavy crude oil emulsions was studied in a parallel-plate laboratory coalescer (DC field). Particularly, viscous responses and their influence on the emulsion stability measurements were investigated. In addition to highlighting previous results from the same experimental setup and discussing these based on recent experience, new results at different temperatures and volume fractions of water were presented. A new semi-empirical model for the characteristic time of the destabilization process was presented. The electrical forces were modelled with a point-dipole approximation and the hydrodynamic resistance to droplet transport was modelled with an empirical term including the logarithmic viscosity of the oil phase. The new model clearly performed much better than the previous model, particularly for very viscous crude oils. Studies of the performance of industrial electrocoalescers have showed that simple electrostatic theory can potentially explain complex separation phenomena when the resistance to the coalescence step is reduced by an efficient demulsifier. The ultimate goal is to build a model for both the laboratory setup and the industrial coalescer so that laboratory experiments can be used to predict the behavior of the industrial process.  相似文献

Oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions are widely used in the preparation of many cosmetics, foods, and pharmaceutical products. Microstructure and stability of such emulsions are of utmost importance for their acceptability by the end user. In the present work, we studied the O/W emulsions to know the effects of two bio-derived additives—juice of Coriander sativam L., and milk of Cocos nucifera L, which have good nutrient value for their use in food emulsions. Addition of Cocos nucifera L. milk resulted in enhanced stability with decrease in the polydispersity of dispersed droplets in the emulsions due to the presence of proteins in it. Addition of Coriander sativam L. provided better stability against pH variation from 4 to 8.

W/O emulsions were studied using asphaltenes as surfactants. Asphaltenes were obtained from three Venezuelan crude oils: “Lago Cinco,” “Rosa Mediano,” and “Ayacucho.” They were extracted using n-heptane as a precipitanting agent. The following variables were studied: concentration of asphaltenes in the oleic phase and pH of the aqueous phase. An increase in asphaltene concentration in the oleic phase increases emulsion stability. On the other hand, the most stable emulsions correspond to an alkaline aqueous phase. Likewise, emulsion stability was higher for asphaltenes obtained from “Lago Cinco” crude oil and lowest from Rosa Mediano asphaltenes.  相似文献

The critical electrical field has been used as a tool to probe water in crude emulsion stability to electrical fields in many previous studies. Given the increasing importance of this metric, this study investigates factors that are important to the reproducibility of the measurement and the effect of emulsion preparation variables on the critical electric field. It was observed that the emulsion preparation procedure has a strong effect on the measured critical electric field due to droplet size effects. Furthermore, the effect of crude oil properties on the critical electric field was investigated using emulsions from different oils but with the same average droplet diameter, where it was found that the measurement was dominated by crude oil viscosity.  相似文献

In the last few decades, there has been an increasing trend for the usage of natural products and their derivatives as green and renewable oil-filed chemicals. Use of these compounds or their derivatives contributes to reducing the use of traditional chemicals, and enhances green chemistry principles. Curcumin (CRC) is one of the most popular natural products and is widely available. The green character, antioxidant action, and low cost of CRC prompt its use in several applications. In the present study, Curcumin was used to synthesize two new amphiphilic ionic liquids (AILs) by reacting with 1,3-propanesultone or bromoacetic acid to produce corresponding sulfonic and carboxylic acids, CRC-PS and CRC-BA, respectively. Following this, the formed CRC-PS and CRC-BA were allowed to react with 12-(2-hydroxyethyl)-15-(4-nonylphenoxy)-3,6,9-trioxa-12-azapentadecane-1,14-diol (HNTA) to form corresponding AILs, GCP-IL and GRB-IL, respectively. The chemical structures, surface tension, interfacial tension, and relative solubility number (RSN) of the synthesized AILs were investigated. The efficiency of GCP-IL and GRB-IL to demulsify water in heavy crude oil (W/O) emulsions was also investigated, where we observed that both GCP-IL and GRB-IL served as high-efficiency demulsifiers and the efficiency increased with a decreased ratio of water in W/O emulsion. Moreover, the data showed an increased efficiency of these AILs with an increased concentration. Among the two AILs, under testing conditions, GCP-IL exhibited a higher efficiency, shorter demulsification time, and cleaner demulsified water.  相似文献

This article discusses the effect of water fraction on the rheological properties of waxy crude oil emulsions including gel point, yield stress, viscosity, and thixotropy. The experimental results reveal that the rheological behaviors of the w/o emulsion samples all intensify with the increase of water volume fraction within 60%. Of more significance is that a correlation for w/o emulsions between yield stress and water volume fraction is put forward with an average relative error of 6.75%. In addition, some mainstream viscosity prediction models of w/o emulsions are evaluated, and Elgibaly model is the best-fit for the emulsions in this study.  相似文献

In this article, the effects of various operating factors on the surface tension, viscosity, and stability of two heavy oil types in water emulsions for pipeline transportation are studied using the Taguchi experimental design approach. The surface tension of heavy crude oil-in-water emulsion is decreased by increasing the emulsifier concentration while the stability of emulsions is increased. The viscosity and stability are increased by an increase in oil content. An increase in the salinity and mixing speed leads to an increase in the stability of emulsion.  相似文献

Curcumin is one of the most studied chemo-preventive agents, which may cause suppression, retardation, or inversion of carcinogenesis. But its application is currently limited because of its poor water-solubility and bioaccessibility. A curcumin O/W emulsion was prepared by high-pressure homogenization, using triglyceride monolaurate as an emulsifier and medium chain triglycerides (MCT) as the oil phase. The effects of emulsifiers, emulsifier concentration, oil type, oil-to-water ratio, and homogenization pressure and processing cycles on the physical stability and droplet size distribution of curcumin-encapsulated O/W emulsions were evaluated in this study. The results showed that the mean droplet size of the O/W emulsions remained remarkably stable during 60 days of storage under both light and dark conditions. Curcumin retentions in O/W emulsions after 60 days of storage under light and dark conditions were 97.9% and 81.6%, respectively. In addition, during the simulated gastrointestinal digestion process, the mean droplet size of the O/W emulsions increased from 260 nm to 2743 nm after incubation with simulated gastric fluid (SGF) for 24 h, while the mean droplet size remained unchanged after incubation with simulated intestinal fluid (SIF). The results displayed negligible changes in curcumin content during incubation with simulated gastrointestinal fluids, indicating that effective protection of curcumin was achieved by encapsulation in the O/W emulsion. It is expected that curcumin will acquire high bioaccessibility and bioavailability when the O/W emulsion is to be used in clinical applications.  相似文献

Various nanoparticles have been applied as chemical demulsifiers to separate the crude-oil-in-water emulsion in the petroleum industry, including graphene oxide (GO). In this study, the Janus amphiphilic graphene oxide (JGO) was prepared by asymmetrical chemical modification on one side of the GO surface with n-octylamine. The JGO structure was verified by Fourier-transform infrared spectra (FTIR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and contact angle measurements. Compared with GO, JGO showed a superior ability to break the heavy oil-in-water emulsion with a demulsification efficiency reaching up to 98.25% at the optimal concentration (40 mg/L). The effects of pH and temperature on the JGO’s demulsification efficiency were also investigated. Based on the results of interfacial dilatational rheology measurement and molecular dynamic simulation, it was speculated that the intensive interaction between JGO and asphaltenes should be responsible for the excellent demulsification performance of JGO. This work not only provided a potential high-performance demulsifier for the separation of crude-oil-in-water emulsion, but also proposed novel insights to the mechanism of GO-based demulsifiers.  相似文献

In this study, it was aimed to compare the rheological properties of carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) in aqueous solutions and their corresponding emulsions containing 0.05, 0.1, 0.25, and 0.5% CMC in the aqueous phase. Samples with 0.05 and 0.1% CMC showed Newtonian behavior, but shear-thinning behavior was observed in CMC solutions and emulsions with increasing CMC concentrations to 0.25% and 0.5%. Rheological behavior of all samples were modeled by Power law (R 2 = 0.986–197) and Casson models (R 2 = 0.968–1). According to the Ostwald–de Waele model, the consistency index of all samples was increased and the flow behavior index decreased with increasing CMC concentration. Comparison of our data with four predicting models (Einstein, Larson, Pal, and Dougherty-Krieger equations) showed that the viscosity of continuous phase controls the viscosity of emulsions with high CMC concentrations and these models are not applicable for such situations. Addition of CMC increased the emulsion stability of O/W emulsions. This stability was increased with increasing CMC concentrations.  相似文献

Development of new formulations for topical use and cosmetic and pharmaceutical delivery agents has increased the complexity of emulsified systems. Liquid crystals, known since the nineteenth century are the third phase of an emulsion, being responsible for increasing its stability and the solubility of substances poorly soluble in water, or the oily phase, modulating the release of drugs imprisoned in its structure and promoting hydration of the skin surface. In the present work we developed oil/water emulsions, making use of Marigold oil (Calendula officinalis L) and ethoxylated fat alcohols as surfactant. The required HLB value for marigold oil was determined to be 6.0. The surfactants were associated in lipophilic/hydrophilic pairs. The lipophilic surfactants were Ceteth‐2 and Steareth‐2 and the hydrophilic surfactants were Steareth‐20, Ceteareth‐20, Ceteareth‐5, and Ceteth‐10. To identify the liquid crystalline phases, the emulsions were analyzed by polarized light microscopy. The physical stability was evaluated by rheology and zeta potential analysis. All emulsions presented lamellar liquid crystal structures. Results showed that this type of surfactant is able to produce liquid crystal in the system, with slight difference in appearance, influencing the physical stability, according to the methods applied.  相似文献

Severe viscous fingering during water flooding of heavy oil leaves a large amount of oil untouched in the reservoir. Improving sweep efficiency is vital for enhancing heavy oil recovery. This study presented a laboratory study for improving sweep efficiency by alkaline flooding in heavy oil Reservoirs. This included glass-etched micromodel flooding tests, one-dimensional flooding experiments and three-dimensional physical model study. The micromodel tests show that W/O droplet flow plays a prominent role in the alkaline flooding to improve sweep efficiency. There is a minimum alkaline concentration that generates the W/O droplet flow, and the W/O droplet flow is more obvious with the alkaline concentration increasing. A series of flood tests were conducted using 325 mPa · s, 2000 mPa · s, and 3950 mPa · s heavy oils to assess the effectiveness of W/O droplet flow in alkaline flooding for enhanced heavy oil recovery. The flood tests results demonstrate the considerable potential for improved heavy oil recovery by alkaline flooding, and moreover, the incremental oil recovery has been found to increase as the alkaline concentration increases. The result obtained in three-dimensional physical model study indicates that the sweep area can be greatly improved by the formation of W/O droplet flow in alkaline flooding.  相似文献

Emulsions containing vegetable oils and anisotropic phases have especially attractive properties in pharmaceutical technology. They are use as vehicle for different kind of drugs, especially those of topical application. Apart from that, many vegetable oil have pharmacological activity, increasing the necessity for the development of new delivery systems for them. We developed emulsions with vegetable oils at a fixed surfactant ratio and observed the formation of liquid crystalline phases. Nine vegetable oils: Andiroba, Apricot, Avocado, Brazil Nut, Buriti, Cupuassu, Marigold, Passion Fruit and Pequi and mineral oil were tested. Surfactant system was consisted by Steareth-2 and Ceteareth-5. Emulsions were prepared by the emulsion phase inversion (EPI) method, presenting high stability independent on the HLB value. Results indicate that this method could be employed to attain stable emulsions, even if the required HLB value is not known.  相似文献

An experimental study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the various components of Athabasca bitumen in stabilizing water-in-diluted-bitumen emulsions. The solvent used to dilute the very viscous bitumen was a mixture of 50:50 by volume of hexane and toluene. The various bitumen components studied were asphaltenes, deasphalted bitumen, and fine solids. It was found that asphaltenes and fine solids were the main stabilizers of the water-in-diluted-bitumen emulsions. Individually, the two components can stabilize water-in-diluted-bitumen emulsions. However, when both are present the capacity of the diluted bitumen to stabilize water emulsions is greatest. Emulsion stabilization tests indicated that whole bitumen had less capacity to stabilize water emulsions than asphaltenes and solids. This would indicate that the presence of the small molecules within the whole bitumen tends to lower the emulsion stability. Deasphalted bitumen acts as a poor emulsion stabilizer. Although deasphalted bitumen led to the least emulsion stabilization capacity, interfacial tension measurements showed that diluted deasphalted bitumen gave a greater decrease in the interfacial tension of water with diluent.  相似文献

The aim of this research was to characterize emulsion systems (ES) containing nonionic ethoxylated surfactants by using rheological, microscopic, and thermogravimetric assays. Three formulations were developed: ES-1: 8.0% (w/w) oleth-20; ES-2: 4.0% (w/w) oleth-20 / 4.0% (w/w) steareth-21; and ES-3: 8.0% (w/w) steareth-21. The systems showed typical non-Newtonian pseudo-plastic behavior. The presence of a lamellar gel phase was observed for all systems, with ES-2 being more pronounced. Through thermogravimetry, the profiles of the three systems were found to be similar, consisting of two main events, the first one being characterized by loss of water and, beyond 110°C, by loss of the oil phase.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to determine the optimal conditions, that is, the content of sesame oil and the amount of carboxymethylcellulose, to obtain stable dispersion systems. Emulsions were stored under different temperature conditions. For this purpose, six emulsions were prepared and their stability was examined empirically using techniques including particle size analysis, optical microscopy, and the Turbiscan test. The emulsion containing 40 g of oil and 0.6 g of thickener had the highest stability. No destabilizations in whole the range of stored temperature were observed for the emulsion with that composition. Emulsion was stable as well at cool temperature as at extreme environment (40°C). Nowadays, the use of O/W emulsions based on vegetable oil is continuously increasing. To date, sesame oil has been used mainly for direct consumption. The present work indicates a novel possibility for use of sesame oil as the fat base of an emulsion system. Besides, the study gave information about parameters of long-term stability emulsion what is the key in the quality of the dispersion systems. This knowledge is necessary for the industry in order to avoid destabilizing processes occurring in a new product.  相似文献
