This study presents a subset of factors and their association with students’ achievement in school algebra. The participants were students who had enrolled in 2007 at the ninth year of Greek public education (third year of middle school). A total of 735 students participated (aged 14–15 years) from 37 public secondary schools. The sample consisted of 378 girls (51.4%) and 357 boys (48.6%). A written algebra test and a questionnaire including demographic survey items were used to collect data. The results show that attitude towards mathematics (ATM) and the current teacher rating of mathematics performance were identified as the more significant predictors of algebra achievement, contributing by 18.1% and 24.7%, respectively, in total variance of mean at the end of ninth grade.  相似文献

A considerable amount of research on ways of testing creative ability in mathematics is now being written and this takes two forms. On the one hand there are fundamental researches which try to provide diagnostic test items on mathematical creativity and then to use these to find the relationship between this variable and a number of others. On the other hand there are attempts to create assessment items which try to measure the end‐product of a modern discovery‐based mathematics curriculum. This paper examines the criteria and form of some of these items.  相似文献

The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of metacognitive strategies and content‐specific feedback on student achievement in high school mathematics. Participants consisted of a convenience sample of students in honors geometry. An analysis of variance with repeated measures was employed to address the research questions. For both the posttest and retention test, students in the experimental group significantly outperformed the students in the comparison group. However, students scored lower in the retention test than the posttest. The findings of this study offer a modest contribution to the body of empirical research on the impact of metacognitive practice and content‐specific feedback on academic achievement at the high school level.  相似文献

During the years they spend in university, many mathematics students develop a very poor conception of mathematics and its teaching. This fact is bad in all cases, but even more in the case of those students who will be mathematics teachers in school. In this paper it is argued that the history of mathematics may be an efficient element to provide students with flexibility, open-mindedness and motivation towards mathematics. The theoretical background of this work relies both on recent research in mathematics education and on papers written by mathematicians of the past. Opinions are supported with examples. One example concerns a historical presentation of ‘definition’; it was developed with mathematics students who will become mathematics teachers. For students oriented to research or to applied mathematics, an example is presented to address the problem of the secondary-tertiary transition.  相似文献

In this article, we present results of an empirical study with 500 German students of grades 7 and 8. The study focussed on students' mathematics achievement and their interest in mathematics as well as on the relation between these two constructs. In particular, the results show that the development of an individual student's achievement between grade 7 and grade 8 depends on the achievement level of the specific classroom and therefore on the specific mathematics instruction Interest in mathematics could be regarded a predictor for mathematics achievement Moreover, our findings suggest that the students show hardly any fear of mathematics independent of their achievement level.  相似文献

The purpose of this study is to describe the results obtained from a survey whose goal was to examine the combination of variables that have contributed to the success of a middle school math club. This is a case of a middle school in which the students are extremely successful in mathematics, and where the majority of the students voluntarily attend its math club. The results of the study show that the students have positive attitudes about mathematics and the club, and that some of the reasons that influenced them to attend the club were those of being with friends and eating donuts at the club. The results were similar for students of both genders and all grades. In addition, since positive attitudes are associated with higher levels of math achievement, such clubs have the potential to encourage students to enrol in additional mathematics classes while in high school, as well as pursuing mathematics related careers.  相似文献

This observational study used data from 270 second-grade students to investigate the association between students' strategy use for multidigit addition and subtraction and their mathematics achievement. Based on strategies they used during a mathematics interview, students were classified into the following strategy groups: (a) standard algorithm, (b) invented, (c) mixed, and (d) unclassified. We used two-level hierarchical linear regression to investigate the association between students' strategy use and their performance on a standardized test in mathematics. Results indicated that students in the mixed strategy groups had significantly higher mathematics achievement than those in the standard algorithm and the unclassified groups.  相似文献

This article evaluates online mathematical content used for teaching mathematics in engineering classes and in distance education for teacher training students. In the EU projects Xmath and dMath online computer algebra modules (Steplets) for undergraduate students assembled in the Xmath eBook have been designed. Two questionnaires, a compulsory student project and teaching in front of class show that using Steplets turn mathematics teaching from drill to understanding. The Steplets use algorithms developed for the Mathematica programming language.  相似文献

This article describes a study, from a Canadian technical institute's upgrading mathematics course, where students played a role in developing the final closed-book exam that they sat. The study involved a process where students developed practice exams and solutions keys, students sat each other's practice exams, students evaluated classmates' solutions to the practice exams, and finally the instructor used questions from the practice exams to develop the ‘live’ final exam. Phenomenography is used to analyse interview data and report students' experiences. Through the results, claims are made that students experienced deep approaches to learning and worked as partners in learning, teaching and assessment during the process of developing the final exam with their instructor.  相似文献

Based on a sequence of points and a particular linear transformation generalized from this sequence, two recent papers (E. Mauch and Y. Shi, Using a sequence of number pairs as an example in teaching mathematics. Math. Comput. Educ., 39 (2005), pp. 198–205; Y. Shi, Case study projects for college mathematics courses based on a particular function of two variables. Int. J. Math. Educ. Sci. Techn., 38 (2007), pp. 555–566) have presented some interesting examples which can be used in teaching high school and college mathematics classes. In this article, we further discuss a few interesting ways to apply this sequence of points in teaching college mathematics courses such as linear algebra, numerical methods in computing, and discrete mathematics. In addition to using them in individual courses, these studies may also be combined together to offer seminars or workshops to college mathematics students. Studies like these are likely to promote student interests and get students more involved in the learning process, and therefore make the learning process more effective.  相似文献

This article investigates the attitude toward mathematics among the students enrolled in the Foundation Year Programme at Nazarbayev University. The study is conducted quantitatively and an inventory developed by Tapia and Marsh II is adopted in this research. The inventory consists of 40 statements on the five-point Likert scale. Gender, specialization and final high school score in mathematics are collected. The number of valid returned questionnaires is 108. There are 55 males, 53 females, 73 Mathematical-Physics (MP), 22 Biology-Chemistry (BC) and 13 International Relations-Economics (IRE) students. Generally, they have a positive attitude toward mathematics, with the score mean and standard deviation are 3.999 and 0.531 out of five, respectively. We confirm a hypothesis on a positive correlation between previous high achievement in mathematics and favorable attitude toward it. The correlation value is r = 0.300, its effect size is medium and it is extremely significant (p-value = 0.0008 < 0.001). There is no significant difference between male and female students in terms of their attitude toward mathematics (t = 0.6804, p-value = 002489 > 0.05). There is a very significant difference between students who specialize in IRE and MP in terms of their attitude toward mathematics (F(2, 105) = 5.6848, p-value = 0.0045 < 0.01).  相似文献

This study examines different factors' relative importance for students' performance in the transition to university mathematics. Students' characteristics (motivation, actions and beliefs) were measured when entering the university and at the end of the first year. Principal component analysis revealed four important constructs: Self-efficacy, Motivation type, Study habits and Views of mathematics. Subsequently, orthogonal partial least squares (OPLS) analysis was used for measuring the constructs' ability to predict students' university mathematics grades. No individual constructs measured at the time of entrance predicted more than 5% of the variation. On the other hand, jointly they predicted 14%, which is almost in pair with upper secondary grades predicting 17%. Constructs measured at the end of the first year were stronger predictors, jointly predicting 37% of the variation in university grades, with Self-efficacy (21%) and Motivation (12%) being the two strongest individual predictors. In general, Study habits were not important for predicting university achievement. However, for students with low upper secondary grades, the textbook and interaction with peers, rather than internet-based resources, contributed positively to achievement. The association between Views of mathematics and performance was weak for all groups and non-existing for students with low grades.  相似文献

This paper uses the example of six Japanese teachers and their mathematics lessons to illustrate how clear, high standards for mathematics instruction are combined with teachers' holistic concern for students. We draw upon data from the Third International Math and Science Study Case Study Project in Japan that was designed to elucidate the context behind the high achievement of Japanese students. Using everyday examples of classroom practice, we illustrate both flexibility in teachers' approach to teaching and adherence to Monbusho's (Ministry of Education, Science, Sports, and Culture)Course of Study. Our purpose is to emphasize how flexibility and attention to individual needs by Japanese teachers combine with quality mathematics instruction based on the detailed Japanese curricula. Six teachers' characteristics and lessons (two teachers at each educational level—elementary, junior high, and high school) are described in order to show the variety of teachers who exist in Japan. These teachers use their understanding of theCourse of Study and are supported by their school environment to enhance their students' conceptual understanding of the fundamentals of mathematics. Characteristics of their teaching include: 1) involving the whole class in learning. 2) using extremely focused curriculum guidelines that expect mastery of concepts at each grade level, 3) thoroughly covering mathematics units in an organized and in-depth manner, 4) leading classes as facilitators or guides more often than as lecturers, and 5) focusing on problem solving with the primary goal of developing students' ability to reason, especially to reason inductively. The examples in this paper show how these methods develop in individal classrooms.  相似文献

Research in history of mathematics gained momentum in the past two decades in Turkey. The present paper aims to describe the patterns in the history of mathematics research in Turkey and to analyse the research in Turkey using a mathematics education framework. The qualitative paradigm and a case study design are used in the study. The obtained data were analysed by using the document analysis technique with the help of a content analysis. The study group which is comprised of twenty-two postgraduate theses at master's or doctoral level were purposefully selected from the higher education council postgraduate theses database. Findings indicate a dearth of research in the area and that most of the theses are done in the area of mathematics education. Moreover, the focus, in general, was on attitudinal variables, and cognitive aspects seemed to be ignored.  相似文献

This study investigates the pedagogical skills and knowledge of three tertiary-level mathematics support tutors in a large group classroom setting. This is achieved through the use of video analysis and a theoretical framework comprising Rowland's Knowledge Quartet and general pedagogical knowledge. The study reports on the findings in relation to these tutors’ provision of mathematics support to first and second year undergraduate engineering students and second year undergraduate science students. It was found that tutors are lacking in various pedagogical skills which are needed for high-quality learning amongst service mathematics students (e.g. engineering/science/technology students), a demographic which have low levels of mathematics upon entering university. Tutors teach their support classes in a very fast didactic way with minimal opportunities for students to ask questions or to attempt problems. It was also found that this teaching method is even more so exaggerated in mandatory departmental mathematics tutorials that students take as part of their mathematics studies at tertiary level. The implications of the findings on mathematics tutor training at tertiary level are also discussed.  相似文献

Based on a sequence of number pairs, a recent paper (Mauch, E. and Shi, Y., 2005, Using a sequence of number pairs as an example in teaching mathematics, Mathematics and Computer Education, 39(3), 198–205) presented some interesting examples that can be used in teaching high school and college mathematics classes such as algebra, geometry, calculus, and linear algebra. In this paper, this study is generalized further to develop a few interesting case study proposals that can be used for student projects in college mathematics courses such as real functions, analytic geometry, and complex variables. In addition to using them in individual courses, these studies may also be combined to offer seminars or workshops to college mathematics students. Projects like these are likely to promote student interest and get students more involved in the learning process, and therefore make the learning process more effective.  相似文献

The aim of this study is to determine how the TIMSS mathematics success of the 8th grade students differentiates according to the school type, gender, mathematics report mark, parents' education level, cognitive domains and cognitive domains by gender. Relational survey method was used in the study. Six-hundred fifty two 8th grade students studying in the same city in Turkey participated in this study. In this study, a 45 question test that was made up by choosing TIMSS 2011 mathematics questionnaire was used as a data collection tool. Quantitative data analysis methods were used in the data analysis, frequency, percentage, average, standard deviation, independent sample test, one-way analysis of variance and post-hoc tests were applied to data by using SPSS packaged software. At the end of the study, it was determined that the school type, mathematics school mark, parents' education level and cognitive domains influenced the students' TIMSS mathematics success but their gender was a neutral element. Moreover, it was seen that schools which are really successful in national exams are more successful in TIMSS exam; students whose mathematics school marks are 5 and whose parents graduated from university are more successful in TIMSS exams than others.  相似文献
