ABSTRACT

In this paper, we propose a suitable surface energy expression for cholesteric liquid crystals. We show that there exists a symmetry allowed term for chiral nematics that doesn’t appear in the traditional Rapini-Papoular surface energy form. We examined the effect of an electric field applied during the injection procedure on the polar pretilt angle of a nematic liquid crystal (LC). The pretilt angle of the sample injected at 25°C gradually increased as the electric field was increased. On the other hand, the pretilt angle of a sample injected at 90°C (which is above the nematic-isotropic phase transition temperature of LC) showed a sudden increase in the presence of the electric field and also increased with a greater electric field. We think the alignment layer might be swollen with LC molecules, and the rotation of the immersed LC molecules by the electric field induces a deformation of the alignment layer. These results imply LC and the alignment layer were coupled, and their cooperation had an influence on determining the bulk pretilt angle.  相似文献

A new method for measuring a polar anchoring energy of nematic liquid crystals (LCs) is proposed. A variation of LC tilt angle on the surface with an applied electrical field was determined by a reflective method. The twisted LC cell configuration was selected to compensate a contribution of the induced birefringence in the reflective spectra. The electrical field controlled reflectance was used to analyse the potential form of the polar anchoring energy and to define the anchoring strength. The proposed method is applicable for 2–5 μm thick LC cells.  相似文献

We have synthesized new phenylacetylene-based liquid crystals containing a cyclohexyl or cyclohexylethyl group and evaluated their physical properties in order to develop a range of materials having high value of birefringence. The cyclohexyl-containing compounds exhibited nematic behaviour near room temperature and moderate values of δn of around 0.3. The cyclohexylethyl-containing compounds had a very wide nematic range with a high TNI and very high values of δn of over 0.4. They also exhibited low viscosities. The order parameter was not affected by introducing either a cyclohexyl or a cyclohexylethyl group and the values of δn based on calculated polarizabilities were obtained experimentally.  相似文献

An analytical solution for the anchoring energy coefficient of liquid crystal (LC) cells with arbitrary values of pretilt angles is derived. When phase retardation is plotted against applied voltage, one acquires the extrapolation length of the anchoring, and the anchoring energy coefficient is derived in the low-voltage regime. This solution can be applied to LC cells with various pretilt angles straightforwardly. Finally, the anchoring energy coefficient of 4.9 × 10?5 J/m2 is obtained for a homemade LC cell with a pretilt angle of 32.7°.  相似文献

It has been proved that the high dielectric polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) could be used as an alignment layer in liquid crystal device. In this paper, the transmittance, pretilt angle and the polar anchoring energy of the substrates with PVDF alignment layer were researched. Theoretical results and the experimental results about the reflectivity RSS (polarisation-conserving signals) recorded by full-leaky guided mode in liquid crystal technique are analysed to evaluate the anchoring energy of PVDF alignment layer. The result shows that the polar anchoring energy between PVDF alignment layer and liquid crystal molecules is 2.80 × 10?4 J/m2.  相似文献

We have determined the orientational distribution of cyano-substituted side chains of a rubbed polyimide film, and a liquid crystal monolayer adsorbed on the film, by means of optical second harmonic generation. With the orientational distribution of a main chain that was measured in a previous study by means of near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy, we have obtained the correlation of all the orientational distributions contributing to the alignment of LC molecules, i.e. pretilt angle. We find that the side chain plays a role in increasing the pretilt angle, but in the case of rubbing strength dependence, the main chain has stronger correlation with the pretilt angle than has the side chain.  相似文献

We report on the first observation of a non-monotonic UV exposure dependence of the pretilt angle of a liquid crystal on a photoaligning surface. We found this non-monotonic dependence on fluorinated poly(vinyl cinnamate) (PVCN-F) surface while non-fluorinated PVCN revealed a monotonic decrease of the pretilt angle with exposure. These dependences correlate with light-induced changes of the polarity of PVCN-F and PVCN surfaces. The obtained data point to an important role of the surface polarity and the light-induced changes in mechanisms of pretilt angle generation on photoaligning materials.  相似文献

A high pretilt angle for the nematic liquid crystal, 4-n-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (5CB), was observed on rubbed polythiophene (PTP) surfaces having alkyl chains with more than ten carbon atoms. We consider that this is due to a surface-excluded volume effect caused by the long alkyl chains between the LC molecules and the PTP surfaces. The polar anchoring strength in 5CB on rubbed PTP surfaces with long alkyl chains has also been successfully evaluated. The extrapolation length de of 5CB increases with increasing alkyl chain lengths above the seven carbons of alkyl chain R7; that is, it may be attributed to the high pretilt angle. An extrapolation length of 5 nm is observed in 5CB for the seven carbons alkyl chain R7 on the PTP surface; this indicates high anchoring strength.  相似文献

A liquid crystal (LC) alignment technique has been developed that allows local control of the polar pretilt angle over the range of 0–90°. This was achieved through the formation of a polymer network localised in the vicinity of the LC cell substrates. The network was formed as a result of in situ UV-induced polymerisation of a photo-reactive monomer added at concentrations of 0.5–1%. Localisation of the polymer network at the LC–substrate boundary was achieved by the application of a high voltage before polymerisation. The resultant pretilt angle was determined by the voltage applied during the polymerisation and/or the duration of the voltage application before the polymerisation step. The desired pretilt angle could be set over a small area of the sample, which allows the fabrication of LC devices with spatially variable optical retardation. Using this method we fabricated a converging lens, a bi-prism, and a phase diffraction grating with resolution greater than 50 lines mm?1.  相似文献

The synthesis and liquid crystalline properties of a new series of amides (series 2a-f,3a-d and 4a-d) incorporating pyridine and 1,3,4-thiadiazole rings are reported. No homologues of the series 2 show mesomorphic properties. In the series 3 only the highest homologues (3d) displays an enantiotropic SmA mesophase; the compound 3c exhibits a monotropic SmA mesophase, and the homologues 3a,b display no liquid crystal properties. The amides 4b-d display an enantiotropic SmA phases and the first homologue (4a) exhibit only crystalisotropic transition. These series are compared with previously reported Schiff's bases and amide analogues. A structural study by AM1 semi-empirical calculation is also described.  相似文献

Four polyimides containing hexylene spacer and a fluorostilbene unit in the side chains were prepared in thin‐film form by two‐step condensation of 3,3′‐bis[(4′‐fluoro‐4‐stilbenyl)oxyhexyloxy]‐4,4′‐biphenyldiamine (FS6B) with pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA), benzophenone‐3,3′,4,4′‐tetracarboxylic dianydride (BTDA), 4,4′‐oxydi(phthalic anhydride) (ODPA), and 4,4′‐hexafluoroisopropylidenedi(phthalic anhydride) (6FDA), respectively, and their controllability of liquid crystal (LC) alignment on rubbed surfaces was investigated. Pretilt angles of LCs were achieved in the 2–9° range, depending on the rubbing density and backbone structures. The effect of the mesogenic stilbene group on the pretilting of LCs was distinctive in FS6B‐PMDA. Contact‐angle measurements on thin films annealed at 120 °C revealed that FS6B‐PMDA potentially had the better alignment stability than FS6B‐6FDA. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. It is well known that the alignment of liquid crystals (LCs) can be realised by rubbing or photoalignment technologies. Recently, nonlinear laser lithography (NLL) was introduced as a fast, relatively low-cost method for large area nano-grating fabrication based on laser-induced periodic surface structuring. In this letter for the first time, the usage of the NLL as a perspective method of the alignment of nematics was presented. By NLL, nanogrooves with about 0.92 μm period were formed on Ti layer. The nanostructured Ti layer (NSTL) was coated with oxidianiline-polyimide film with annealing of the polymer followed without any further processing. Aligning properties of NSTLs were examined with combined twist LC cell. The dependencies of the twist angle of LC cells and azimuthal anchoring energy (AE) of layers on scanning speed and power of laser beam during processing of the Ti layer were the focus of our studies as well. The maximum azimuthal AE, obtained for pure NSTL, is comparable with photoalignment technology. It was found that the deposition of polyimide film on NSTL leads to the gain effect of the azimuthal AE. Also, atomic force microscopy (AFM) study of aligning surfaces was carried out.  相似文献

Wide view (WV) film is an important material in the polariser. It is a hybrid-aligned, discotic liquid crystal (DLC) on an alignment layer on the tri-acetyl cellulose film, which is used as compensation film in twisted nematic (TN) mode liquid crystal display (LCD). The relation between the alignment direction of the DLC in the WV film and the rubbing direction of the polyimide on the glass substrate in the TN mode LCD was investigated. The results indicated that the contrast ratio (CR) of the TN mode LCD can be increased by adjusting this angle . When an 88°?rubbing angle was used in this work, the CR of the TN mode LCD could reach 1000:1 and the horizontal and vertical viewing angles were 170 and 160°, respectively.  相似文献

In this paper, we discuss the viewing angle properties of single-domain fringe-field-switching (FFS) liquid crystal (LC) mode aligned by using parallel-rubbed polyimide surfaces. Due to the reduced initial tilting angle distribution in the bulk LC layer under parallel-rubbed surface alignment conditions, the problems of greyscale inversion and off-axis colour shift in the dark state and luminance asymmetry distribution in the low grey level, observed in the conventional single-domain FFS LC mode, can be improved effectively. The viewing angle properties of the proposed structure were analysed by using the Póincare sphere and fringe-field-induced LC distribution.  相似文献

We obtained homogeneously aligned liquid crystals (LCs) on ion beam (IB) irradiated poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) by controlling the IB energy. We then examined the LC alignment state using polarized optical microscopy and conducted thermal stability testing. We obtained homogeneous LC alignment at IB energies above 1,400 eV, indicating that strong IB energy facilitates the alignment of LCs on the PMMA surface. This surface was analyzed by atomic force microscopy, and the contact angles (CAs) were measured to elucidate the mechanism of LC alignment. The increased surface energy strengthened the van der Waals interaction between the surface and LCs, thereby inducing stable, homogeneous LC alignment. Electro-optical (EO) characteristics were measured using twisted nematic (TN) LC mode. Compared to LC cells with conventionally used rubbed polyimide (PI), the LC cells with IB-irradiated PMMA exhibited higher thermal budgets and good electro-optical characteristics.
