This paper reports the results of a review of simulation applications published within peer-reviewed literature between 1997 and 2006 to provide an up-to-date picture of the role of simulation techniques within manufacturing and business. The review is characterised by three factors: wide coverage, broad scope of the simulation techniques, and a focus on real-world applications. A structured methodology was followed to narrow down the search from around 20,000 papers to 281. Results include interesting trends and patterns. For instance, although discrete event simulation is the most popular technique, it has lower stakeholder engagement than other techniques, such as system dynamics or gaming. This is highly correlated with modelling lead time and purpose. Considering application areas, modelling is mostly used in scheduling. Finally, this review shows an increasing interest in hybrid modelling as an approach to cope with complex enterprise-wide systems.  相似文献

There are a growing number of finite capacity scheduling tools which are in use and available to industry. To be fully effective, a scheduling system needs to be incorporated within a control methodology which enables shop-floor performance to be analysed and, when necessary, corrective actions to be formulated. Manufacturing system performance, however, is not only dependent upon short-term planning decisions, but is also constrained by the capability for which it is designed. Hence, any control methodology should be based on a consistent set of performance measures and well defined procedures which help to integrate decision making at all levels in the order fulfilment process. The paper examines the distinctive roles of process optimisation and process control in the decision hierarchy; it classifies a set of measures of performance and other system variables according to the functions they serve in manufacturing control, and suggests a hierarchical process control methodology. The role of discrete event simulation techniques in linking decisions on manufacturing system design and production planning/control is also discussed.  相似文献

In this paper we address the non-pre-emptive flow shop scheduling problem for makespan minimization in a new modelling framework. A lower bound generation scheme is developed by using appropriately defined linear assignment problems and, based on this new approach, a special class of permutation flow shop problems is identified. We present a game theoretic interpretation of our modelling approach which leads to an integer programming formulation of the scheduling problem. A new branch and bound scheme is developed based on these results. The major advantage of our modelling framework and branch-and- bound approach is that it can be easily extended to address a general class of cyclic scheduling problems for production flow lines with blocking. After a discussion of this extension, we report on computational experience that indicates the very satisfactory performance of the new optimal solution procedure for cyclic scheduling problems with finite capacity buffers.  相似文献

The developing logical process (LP)-based parallel and distributed discrete-event simulation (PDES) in the existing PDES programming environments is a difficult and time-consuming process. Event graph is a simple and powerful modelling formalism of discrete-event simulation, whereas this formalism does not support PDES. This article proposes an extension of the event graph to consider the communication of LPs via the events sent, which is called ‘extended event graph (EEG)’, and proposes an EEG-based modelling method for PDES. This modelling method shifts the focus of PDES development from writing code to building models, and the system implementation can be automatically and directly generated from EEG model. The experimental results show that EEG models can successfully execute in the parallel simulator, and this framework can effectively improve the PDES modelling activities.  相似文献

In this paper we present a new modelling approach for realistic simulation of supply-chains. It is based on an object-oriented architecture, which enables flexible specification of the supply-chain configuration along with its operational decisions and policies.A model of a generic supply-chain node is developed to capture the features present in all supply-chain entities. The generic node models in detail activities such as inventory control, manufacturing processes and order handling. The supply-chain model is constructed by linking generic nodes and specifying the physical and business attributes of each supply-chain member. The generic-node model may also be linked to external software for greater accuracy, e.g., detailed production scheduling or optimisation. The model provides a fully dynamic simulation of the supply-chain and the effect of various uncertainties can be evaluated through Monte Carlo simulation and other, more efficient, sampling techniques (not described here).A case study is presented to illustrate the applicability of the model. The case study demonstrates how the effect of policy changes on the supply-chain performance under uncertainty can be evaluated before implementation.  相似文献

The main results available on the use of black-and-white Petri nets for modelling, planning and scheduling manufacturing systems are presented. In the first part of the paper, the basics of Petri nets necessary to understand the subsequent presentation are introduced. Particular attention is paid to event graphs, a particular type of Petri nets used for modelling and evaluating ratio-driven systems. The second part of the paper is devoted to ratio-driven systems, their modelling and their scheduling. Job-shops, assembly systems, and KANBAN systems are used to illustrate this section. Finally, the general case is investigated of manufacturing systems subject to changing demands. An approach based on conflict-free Petri nets with input and output transitions is proposed for planning and scheduling this type of system.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with the development and applicationof stationary models for scheduling single and multiple preventivemaintenance (PM) situations focusing on issues of model implementation. The first part of the paper deals with the practical implementationof the basic single PM scheduling model based on the renewalprocess. The main practical difficulty is lifetime-distributionselection for small data sets which is typical in PM situations. Thus a sensitivity analysis of optimal PM interval to selectedlife distributions following PM and failures (corrective maintenance)is carried out. It has been found that the selected pair ofdistributions using AIC criteria as well as the Weibull–Weibullfitted pair have the smallest availability loss in estimatingthe optimal PM interval. The second part of this paper is concernedwith modelling multi-PM situations—something which hasreceived very little attention in the literature despite itsfrequent implementation in real life. A multi-PM model basedon the renewal process is discussed. The model assumes a multi-PMinterval which is an integer multiple of the single PM intervalsand different renewal functions following each type of PM. Theprocedure of model implementation is discussed through numericalexample.  相似文献

This paper presents a heuristic for the dynamic vehicle scheduling problem with multiple resource capacity constraints. In the envisaged application, an automated transport system using Automated Guided Vehicles, bottleneck resources are (1) vehicles, (2) docks for loading/unloading, (3) vehicle parking places, and (4) load storage space. This problem is hard, because interrelated activities (loading, transportation, unloading) at several geographical locations have to be scheduled under multiple resource constraints, where the bottleneck resource varies over time. Besides, the method should be suitable for real-time planning. We developed a dedicated serial scheduling method and analyzed its dynamic behavior using discrete event simulation. We found that our method is very well able to find good vehicle schedules satisfying all resource constraints. For comparison, we used a simple approach where we left out the resource constraints and extended the processing times by statistically estimated waiting times to account for finite capacities. We found that our newly designed method finds better schedules in terms of service levels.  相似文献

Labour scheduling plays an important and critical role in Sainsburys day to day operations and profitability. The integrated workforce management solution for Sainsburys is an intelligent solution for the operational deployment of human resources, integrated business forecasting, generation and calculation of workload and staff scheduling. The workforce management technology has provided Sainsburys with a fully web-based and centralised system that produces optimised schedules for all employees satisfying the forecasted demand of work with granularity of fifteen minutes. The system is configured to respect all operational and business requirements as well as employee contractual constraints. This paper introduces the workforce management solution system designed, developed and implemented for Sainsburys. We concentrate on two modelling structures, namely the work pattern model and optimisation model, and briefly discuss the optimisation process.  相似文献

A case methodology for developing the modelling skills of students in introductory operational research courses taught in undergraduate business programmes is presented. Motivated by a desire to develop such skills in students when the primary objective of such courses was to expose these students to various solution techniques, the approach takes on greater relevance now that many instructors of such courses have shifted their focus to the development of modelling skills. Example case scenarios that have been used by the author in the classroom are presented, and a comparison of the results achieved by the author after implementation of the case methodology is made with those achieved by the author prior to implementation.  相似文献

This study introduces the concept of computer modelling and simulation of complex bioprocesses and systems using an approach that combines the reference net formalism with machine learning and optimisation techniques. Reference nets are an extension of high level Petri Nets, which can be used as a central visualisation and modelling tool. The net-in-net paradigm used by reference nets makes it possible to model complex processes, such as those found in the food and beverage industry. A plugin/interface system based on the java programming language allows implementation of advanced mathematical modelling techniques at specific points in entire system simulations. Separate optimisation tools can also run and modify existing reference net models for fast solutions to efficiency problems. We present an example system that simulates a specific section of a beer brewery using the reference net formalism, which is optimised using a genetic algorithm. We show in detail how the different software packages can be combined for a simulation based optimisation approach. The optimisation technique specifically addresses the wastewater pollution load in regard to its chemical oxygen demand. A beer brewery was chosen as an example for this study due to the constantly increasing requirements to lower energy and water consumption in this industry. One possibility to lower the energy and water demands is to effectively treat wastewater produced by the brewery, which can introduce cost savings by providing recycled water and biogas. Most approaches to wastewater treatment are end-of-pipe solutions that do not consider the brewery as a whole. A brewery contains many processes that can be running concurrently and interacting with one another (e.g. brewing, clean-in-place and bottling) with each process producing varying amounts of wastewater with different pollution loads. Optimisation of the scheduling of the different processes with respect to the wastewater production will allow for more effective wastewater treatment, and therefore cost and energy savings. Towards integrated design and analysis   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
A systems analysis technique is used to investigate and better understand the processes involved in finite element modelling. Two different starting points are considered: engineering drawings and solid models. The breakdown of activities involved in finite element analysis from a solid model is used as a requirements definition and functional specification for software tools to facilitate automation of finite modelling and eventual integration of design and analysis.  相似文献

The time window (TW) generalizes the concept of due date. The semiconductor wafer fabrication system is currently one of the most complex production processes, which has typical re-entrant batch processing machine (RBPM). RBPM is a bottleneck. This paper addresses a scheduling of RBPM with job-dependent TWs. According to a general modelling, an improved and new job-family-oriented modelling of the decomposition method that is based on the slack mixed integer linear programming is proposed. First, the complicated scheduling problem of RBPM is divided into sub-problems, which are executed circularly. Then, each one consists of updating, sequencing and dispatching. The objective is to minimize the total earliness and tardiness for job-dependent TWs. In order to evaluate the proposed modelling, the experiments are implemented on the real-time scheduling simulation platform and optimization toolkit ILOG CPLEX. The results show that the improved modelling obtains better solutions in less computation time.  相似文献

Simulation modelling is a fascinating research field. The techniques and tools of simulation modelling have been used to research and investigate the behaviour of various systems in a wide range of areas such as commerce, computer networks, defence, health, manufacturing and transportation. Indeed, the study of the use of these techniques and tools, and the development of new forms of these, are a rich source of research in their own right. Simulation modelling is about to reach the 50th anniversary of the development of GSP (General Simulation Program), the first simulation modelling language (Tocher and Owen, 1960). There have been several historical accounts of simulation modelling research. To complement these, we have performed a review of the recent history of simulation modelling. This study targeted three leading journals dedicated to this field. These are the ACM Transactions of Modeling and Computer Simulation, Simulation: Transactions of The Society for Modeling and Simulation International and Simulation Modelling Practice and Theory (formerly Simulation Practice and Theory). The study covered the first 6 years of this century (2000–2005) and included 576 papers. The key observation of this work was the relative lack of ‘real world’ involvement in simulation modelling research and an even greater lack of evidence of ‘real world’ benefit, arguably very alarming outcomes for an applied field. To further investigate this observation two additional surveys were carried out, one to study if real world papers appeared in the more widely known OR/MS literature (837 papers in 12 journals) and one to study if such papers appeared in Manufacturing and Logistics, an application area closely associated with simulation modelling (1077 papers in 10 journals). The results of these surveys confirmed our observations. We ask if this is the natural evolution of a field that has existed for half a century or an indication of a worrying problem? This paper reports on our findings and discusses whether or not simulation modelling research urgently needs to face a ‘reality check.’  相似文献

A threedimensional constitutive model of finite viscoelasticity will be presented. It considers the amplitude dependence and is based on a Maxwell chain with intrinsic time scales. This type of viscoelasticity is thermodynamically consistent and provides a basis for modelling other effects (e.g. temperature dependence). The parameter identification for this model is possible in both the frequency and the time domain. Some finite element implementation and simulation results in the time domain are presented. The numerical simulation of multifrequent and other more complicated loading processes is possible only in the time domain. A very interesting loading process is a cyclic deformation with changing amplitudes in order to simulate the transient dynamic behavior of the Payne-effect. (© 2009 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The definition of Financial Modelling chosen by the EURO working group on financial modelling is ‘the development and implementation of tools supporting firms, investors, intermediaries, governments and others in their financial-economic decision making, including the validation of the premises behind these tools and the measurement of the effectivity of the use of these tools’. Clearly, in this definition, the decision and its solution is central. Unlike financial modelling in our definition, the theory of finance is not so much concerned with individual decisions, but rather with the effects of the decisions and actions of many individuals on the formation of prices in financial markets. It is therefore no wonder that the assumptions underlying financial theory, which at best describe ‘average individuals’ and ‘average decision situations’, are not suited to describe specific individual decision problems. In our view it is the role of financial modelling to support individual decision making, taking account of the peculiarities of the actual case, where possible taking benefit from the results of the financial theory. This philosophy towards financial modelling is illustrated by a framework for portfolio management.  相似文献

Modelling in different forms has long been regarded as a cornerstone of health OR as in other fields of application. Models are now tending to become a standard tool in health services management and research. What are the lessons we as operational researchers have learnt during this development? How can health care managers and health service researchers benefit from modelling — with or without OR-analysts to guide them between the pitfalls? After an introductory overview concerning the nature and objectives of modelling, examples will be given of modelling applications from different health service areas in order to illustrate the versatility of the method. Further, the choice of methods and models is discussed with special attention to the problems of interpretation and implementation of results. From this overview some conclusions are drawn with regards to advantages and disadvantages of modelling as tools for policy planning and decision-making in the health area. Finally some observations are made concercing the conditions for the future development in the field.  相似文献

Modelling, synthesis, and simulation issues of the supervisory systems in process control are investigated in the paper. Petri nets are used as a basic modelling framework for the supervisory part of the system. It is shown how the final verification effort can be minimised by applying formal synthesis methods. A straightforward approach to the industrial implementation of the developed solutions is suggested by means of sequential function chart representation. A batch process cell case study is used to illustrate the described concepts. Corresponding continuous and discrete event models of the process cell units are developed and a co-ordinating supervisor is designed by the method of place invariants. The system is simulated by the continuous simulation tool Matlab-Simulink, which is enhanced for simulation of the sequential control logic represented by sequential function chart.  相似文献

Production planning and scheduling in a batch production environment presents management with many problems, ranging from long-term capital investment in machine tools to short-term batch sequencing. This paper, which is aimed at the production manager, introduces the general concept of model building and then discusses the more specific technique of computer simulation modelling. A simple example of the latter is used to illustrate the basic properties of such a model and then the actual model currently being used is described. The possible applications of such models are discussed and developed. Finally, a case study is presented which shows how the model has been employed in an actual production environment.  相似文献
