The mechanism of two-dimensional polymerization of octadecyl acrylate in lamellar crystal was investigated in two-step postpolymerizations by temperature increase and stepwiseγ-ray irradiation in lieu of the usual one-step reaction. Two-step postpolymerizations by these procedures are interpreted satisfactorily by the cone model, which assumes that the polymerization probability of the monomer molecules in a single layer is distributed conically around the initiation point. It was found that the propagating radicals were living, even in the saturated stage, and the effect of the polymer chains already formed on the propagating and terminating reactions was evident. Furthermore, molecular weight distributions of the resultant poly(octadecyl acrylate) measured by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) were broad. The values of Mw /M n for the two-step post polymerizations were 4.71–7.03, whereas those for one-step reactions were 3.26–5.54.  相似文献

The kinetics and mechanism of polymerization of methacrylic acid (MAA) and ethyl acrylate (EA) initiated by the redox system, Mn3+–thiodiglycolic acid (TDGA) were investigated in the 15–35°C temperature range. The polymerization kinetics of both the monomers followed the same mechanism, viz., initiation by primary radical and termination by Mn3+–thiodiglycolic acid complex. The rate coefficients ki/k0 and kp/kt were related to the monomer reactivity and polymer radical reactivity, respectively. It was observed that both monomer reactivity and polymer radical reactivity followed the same order, viz., EA > MAA. The polymer radical reactivity varied inversely with the Q values of the monomers.  相似文献

2,2,4-Trimethyl-3-on-1-pentyl methacrylate (TMPM) was first synthesized from the condensation reaction of 2,2,4-trimethyl-1-pentanol-3-on with methacrylic acid. Second, the polymerization of TMPM and the copolymerization of TMPM with styrene (St) were carried out in benzene at 60°C, using 2,2′-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as an initiator. As the result of kinetic investigation, the rate of polymerization (Rp) could be expressed by: Rp = k[AIBN]0.5 [TMPM]1.0. Kinetic constants of polymerization of TMPM were obtained as follows: kp/k = 0.27 dm3/2 mole?1/2 sec?1/2, 2fkd = 1.23 × 10?5 sec?1, f = 0.73, Cm = 2.6 × 10?5, Cs = 1.1 × 10?5. From the results the reactivity of TMPM was found to be larger than that of methyl methacrylate. The overall activation energy was calculated to be 110 kJ mole?1. The following monomer reactivity ratios and Q, e values were obtained: TMPM(M1) ? St(M2): r1 = 1.50, r2 = 0.14, Q1 = 2.63, E1 = 0.45.  相似文献

The effect of ferric chloride on the kinetics of the radical polymerization of N-tert-butylacrylamide has been investigated in methanol solution at 25°C, with the use of 4,4′-dicyano-4,4′-azodipentanoic acid as initiator. A shrinkage factor of 0.193 mmole polymerized for 1 mm contraction in a capillary of 1 mm diameter has been obtained from density measurements. In the absence of ferric chloride, rates of polymerization were found to be proportional to the concentration of monomer and to the square root of the initiator concentration. With ferric chloride present, the rate of polymerization becomes directly proportional to the initiator concentration and inversely proportional to the concentration of ferric salt. From measurements of the rates of production of ferrous iron, the specific rate constant of the initiation reaction has been found to be (1.8 ± 0.4) × 10?6sec?1 at 25°C, compared with a value of 7.63 × 10?8 sec?1 calculated from the kinetic data obtained with no ferric salt present. The value of the ratio kp/k4. where kp is the propagation coefficient and k4 is the velocity coefficient for termination by ferric chloride, has been calculated to be 6.0 × 10?4 at 25°C, which is considerably smaller than the value found for the ferric chloride-terminated polymerization of acrylamide in water. This markedly lower value of kp/k4 has been attributed principally to the steric effect of the tert-butyl group on the magnitude of kp.  相似文献

Several kinetics aspects of the methyl methacrylate (MMA) polymerization using 4-dimethylamino-4'-isopropylbenzophenone (PI) as photoinitiator have been studied. The order of the polymerization reaction with respect to monomer and initiator concentrations have been investigated, as well as the polymerization behavior under well-stirred and unstirred conditions; values of initiation quantum yield (?i) and kp/kt1/2 have also been determined. It has been found that the nature of the polymerization-initiating radicals depends on the type of solvent and the photoinitiator concentration ([PI]). In cyclohexane solution and at low [PI] (< 5 x 10-5M), the cyclohexyl radical is practically the only polymerization initiating radical, while at higher [PI] both radicals, cyclohexyl and the aminoalkyl derived from PI, participate in the initiation step, increasing the participation of the later as the [PI] increases. When benzene is used as solvent both phenyl and aminoalkyl radicals participate in the initiation step at any [PI] employed. Efficiencies of the radicals derived from solvent and photoinitiator have been determined.  相似文献

Real time ultraviolet (RTUV) spectroscopy was used to study the photolysis kinetics of a radical-type morpholino initiator, during the polymerization of a multiacrylate monomer exposed to UV radiation in bulk, in solution, in a polyurethane-acrylate resin, and in a poly(methyl methacrylate) matrix. The photolysis rate constant k was determined from the exponential loss profile recorded; it was found to vary between 0.1 and 3s?1, depending on the light intensity and on the monomer concentration. The quenching of the photoinitiator excited states by the acrylate monomer was shown to be an important deactivation pathway which substantially reduces the rate of initiation. The observed influence of the film thickness and photoinitiator concentration on the k value were accounted for by the internal filter effect. Conversion versus time curves were recorded by real time infrared (RTIR) spectroscopy for the various systems examined, thus allowing a direct comparison of both the actual polymerization rate and the residual unsaturation content of the cured polymer. Various factors were shown to be responsible for the early stop of the polymerization, such as depletion of the photoinitiator, O2 inhibition, or vitrification of the polymer. The photoinitiated cationic ring-opening polymerization of a cycloaliphatic diepoxy monomer was also studied in real time by RTUV and RTIR spectroscopy. Despite a very fast photolysis of the triarylsulphonium initiator, the polymerization of the epoxy monomer developed less rapidly than for the acrylic monomer, with shorter kinetic chain lengths. A linear relationship was found to exist between the decay rate constant and the light intensity, for both the radical and the cationic photoinitiators, as expected for a direct photolysis process.  相似文献

The kinetics of the cationic polymerization of ethylene oxide in nitrobenzene at 25° have been studied using an automatic manometer. The reaction is shown to be of first order with respect to both monomer and initiator; kp is 4.78 · 10?2 l mol?1 sec?1. Systematic experiments show that, for this reaction, the initiation step is very fast, and that there is no loss of active centres during the process. Experiments performed with successive additions of monomer confirm these results.  相似文献

Polymorphic behavior and γ-ray-initiated postpolymerization of the even-numbered long-chain Methacrylates (C18-C12) have been investigated. Phase transition behaviors of octadecyl, hexadecyl, tetradecyl, and dodecyl methacrylates are respectively, which become simpler with shortening of the chain length. The methacrylate monomers with sufficiently long hydrocarbon chains, such as octadecyl and hexadecyl, can be polymerized rapidly in the α-form crystal (hexagonal packing) by a fully two-dimensional mechanism, whereas in the β-form crystal (triclinic packing), polymerization can hardly occur. In the case of dodecyl methacrylate, however, an accelerated polymerization in the β form occurs after an induction period of several hours and the resultant polymer is gel-like. This can be interpreted by the propagation reaction across the polymer chain already formed. It has been found that the solid-state post-polymerization of n-alkyl methacrylates is affected by the chain length through the packing mode of the monomer molecules and also by the aggregation state of side chains in the resultant comblike polymer.  相似文献

The γ-ray-induced postpolymerization of acrylonitrile and methyl methacrylate adsorbed on Linde zeolite 13X irradiated at 77°K has been studied between 303 and 343°K as a function of the amount of adsorbed monomer and of the irradiation dose. The change in the nature and the concentration of free radical with temperature and duration of the postpolymerization was followed by the ESR method, whereas the formation of polymer was monitored continuously by the decay of the 1H-NMR absorption line of the monomer under high-resolution conditions. It was found that the overall postpolymerization kinetics may be accounted for by assuming an exponential decay of radical propagation and recombination reactions with chain length. The tacticity of the polymer recovered by destroying the matrix in hydrofluoric acid was determined by 13C-NMR. The probability of isotactic addition of AN and MMA is larger than in the radical polymerization in solution owing likely to the association of adsorbed monomer molecules in pairs preforming an isotactic diad.  相似文献

To clarify the effect of a molecular arrangement of long-chain monomers on polymerizability, γ-ray-initiated postpolymerization of polymorphic crystals of octadecyl acrylate and the melt has been investigated. According to thermal, x-ray, and infrared (IR) analyses octadecyl acrylate exhibit three crystalline modifications similar to, but different in transition behavior from, those of octadecyl methacrylate. The α-form is stable in the range of 19–32°C (mp) and at lower temperatures the β-form is stable, whereas the sub-α-form appears transiently in α → β transition. The monomer molecules in triclinic packing (α-form) show little tendency to polymerize, whereas those in hexagonal packing (β-form) have high polymerizability that increases with temperature. The polymerizability in the molten state at fairly high temperatures is rather low, however. Thus the polymerization rate, saturated conversion, and polymer molecular weight exhibit maxima just above the melting point of α-form. It is concluded that the hexagonal packing of monomer molecules with particular orientation in the layered structure and rotational freedom around the molecular axis, together with some conformational freedom of functional group, is favorable to the polymerization reaction. In addition, the mechanism of polymerization in the layered structure is discussed, assuming a cone-type distribution for the polymerization probability.  相似文献

The polymerization of methyl methacrylate can be initiated by a charge-transfer complex of liquid sulfur dioxide and pyridine in the presence of carbon tetrachloride. The molar ratio of sulfur dioxide and pyridine which participated in the complex was found from a spectrophotometric study to be 2:1. The polymerization proceeds through free-radical intermediates. The overall rate of polymerization is proportional to the square root of the concentration of the complex, and the values of kp/kt1/2 under the various polymerization conditions were satisfactorily consistent with the literature value. For the activation energy of the overall reaction, 8.2 kcal./mole was obtained, and for initiation, 9.7 kcal./mole was evaluated from the values of kp/kt1/2. It was deduced from a kinetic mechanism for the initiation that a primary radical may be produced from the reduction of carbon tetrachloride by an associated complex consisting of liquid sulfur dioxide–pyridine complex and the monomer.  相似文献

The initiation mechanisms of the uncatalyzed polymerization of methyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate by the system of starch, α-amylase or water-soluble nylon 3/copper(II) ion/H2O were investigated by spin trapping techniques. Using 2,4-dimethyl-3-nitrosobenzene sulfonate d8 and 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline-N-oxide as the water-soluble spin trapping agents, the simultaneous generation of both monomer and hydroxyl radicals has been observed, and the propriety of the initiation mechanism proposed previously was confirmed. Thus, the initiation of polymerization in the presence of copper(II) ion was concluded to take place through a hydrogen atom transfer from the complexed water to the β-carbon of the complexed monomer.  相似文献

Aqueous free radical polymerizations of methyl methacrylate with the hydrogen bentonite/ethanol system have been accomplished with less transfer to monomer in spite of high monomer concentrations and temperature. The overall initial rate has a first-order dependence on monomer. It is proposed that initiation does not occur in the aqueous phase. The apparent activation energy of 15 kcal/mol corroborates a twofold increase in rate for a 10°C rise in temperature. The frequency of bimolecular termination is quite small as is evident from kp 2 /kt, values at various temperatures.  相似文献

The occurrence of hydride-transfer reactions during the cationic polymerization of trioxane was demonstrated, and rate constants were obtained. The donor of hydride ions in the transfer reactions was the monomer. The hydride-transfer reaction was a first-order reaction with respect to the concentration of the monomer, and it was governed, just as polymerization and depolymerization were (Shieh, Y. T.; Chen. S. A. J. Polym. Sci. Part A: Polym. Chem. 1999, 37, 483–492) by morphological changes. The hydride-transfer rate constants were 5 orders of magnitude smaller than those for polymerizations and depolymerizations. The rate constants for the reactions, including the polymerizations, depolymerizations, and hydride transfers, were smaller for the active centers on the solid surface than for those in solution, that is, kp was less than kp, kd was less than kd, and kht was less than kht. As a reaction medium, benzene had special effects on the kinetics of the cationic polymerization of trioxane. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 37: 4198–4204, 1999  相似文献

Ultrasound‐mediated atom transfer radical polymerization (sono‐ATRP) in miniemulsion media is used for the first time for the preparation of complex macromolecular architectures by a facile two‐step synthetic route. Initially, esterification reaction of sucrose or lactulose with α‐bromoisobutyryl bromide (BriBBr) is conducted to receive multifunctional ATRP macroinitiators with 8 initiation sites, followed by polymerization of n‐butyl acrylate (BA) forming arms of the star‐like polymers. The brominated lactulose‐based molecule was examined as an ATRP initiator by determining the activation rate constant (ka) of the catalytic process in the presence of a copper(II) bromide/tris(2‐pyridylmethyl)amine (CuIIBr2/TPMA) catalyst in both organic solvent and for the first time in miniemulsion media, resulting in ka = (1.03 ± 0.01) × 104 M?1 s?1 and ka = (1.16 ± 0.56) × 103 M?1 s?1, respectively. Star‐like macromolecules with a sucrose or lactulose core and poly(n‐butyl acrylate) (PBA) arms were successfully received using different catalyst concentration. Linear kinetics and a well‐defined structure of synthesized polymers reflected by narrow molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn = 1.46) indicated 105 ppm wt of catalyst loading as concentration to maintain controlled manner of polymerization process. 1H NMR analysis confirms the formation of new sugar‐inspired star‐shaped polymers.  相似文献

Copolymers of 2-sulfoethyl methacrylate, (SEM) were prepared with ethyl methacrylate, ethyl acrylate, vinylidene chloride, and styrene in 1,2-dimethoxyethane solution with N,N′-azobisisobutyronitrile as initiator. The monomer reactivity ratios with SEM (M1) were: vinylidene chloride, r1 = 3.6 ± 0.5, r2 = 0.22 ± 0.03; ethyl acrylate, r1 = 3.2 ± 0.6, r2 = 0.30 ± 0.05; ethyl methacrylate, r1 = 2.0 ± 0.4, r2 = 1.0 ± 0.1; styrene, r1 = 0.6 ± 0.2, r2 = 0.37 ± 0.03. The values of the copolymerization parameters calculated from the monomer reactivity ratios were e = +0.6 and Q = 1.4. Comparison of the monomer reactivities indicates that SEM is similar to ethyl methacrylate with regard to copolymerization reactivity in 1,2-dimethoxyethane solution. The sodium salt of 2-sulfoethyl methacrylate, SEM?Na, was copolymerized with 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (M2) in water solution. Reactivity ratios of r1 = 0.7 ± 0.1 and r2 = 1.6 ± 0.1 were obtained, indicating a lower reactivity of SEM?Na in water as compared to SEM in 1,2-dimethoxyethane. This decreased reactivity was attributed to greater ionic repulsion between reacting species in the aqueous medium.  相似文献

The application of atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) to the homopolymerization of 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate, a functional monomer, is reported. The polymerizations exhibit first-order kinetics, and molecular weights increase linearly with conversion. Polydispersities remain low throughout the polymerization (Mw/Mn ≈ 1.2). Reactions were conducted in bulk and in 1 : 1 (by volume) aqueous solution; the latter demonstrates the resilience of ATRP to protic media. Analysis of poly(2-hydroxyethyl acrylate) by MALDI-MS and 1H-NMR shows Mn,exp to be much closer to Mn,th than those observed by SEC using polystyrene standards. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A series of forced gradient copolymers with different controlled distribution of monomer units along the copolymer backbone were successfully prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization in miniemulsion. The newly developed initiation technique, known as activators generated by electron transfer, was beneficial for forced gradient copolymers preparation because all polymer chains were initiated within the miniemulsion droplets and the miniemulsion remained stable throughout the entire polymerization. Various monomer pairs with different reactivity ratios were examined in this study, including n‐butyl acrylate/t‐butyl acrylate, n‐butyl methacrylate/methyl methacrylate, and n‐butyl acrylate/styrene. In each case, the added monomer diffused across the aqueous suspending medium and gradient copolymers with different forced distributions of comonomer units along the polymer backbone were obtained. The shape of the gradient along the backbone of the copolymers was influenced by the molar ratio of the monomers, the reactivity ratio of the comonomers as well as the feeding rate. The shape of the gradient was also affected by the relative hydrophobicities of the comonomers. Copolymerizations exhibited good control for all feeding rates and comonomer feeding ratios, as evidenced by narrow molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn = 1.20–1.40) and molecular weight increasing smoothly with polymer yield, indicating high initiation efficiency. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Styrene-terminated poly(2-acetoxyethyl methacrylate) macromonomer (EBA), methacrylate-terminated poly(2-acetoxyethyl methacrylate) macromonomer (MPA), and methacrylate-terminated poly(methyl methacrylate) macromonomer (MPM) were synthesized and subjected to polymerization and copolymerization by a free-radical polymerization initiator (AIBN). EBA and MPA were homopolymerized at various concentrations. EBA exhibited higher reactivity than styrene. The reactivity of MPA, however, was almost equal to that of glycidyl methacrylate. Cumulative copolymer compositions were determined by GPC analysis of copolymerization products. The reactivity ratios estimated were ra = 0.95 and rb , = 0.90 for EBA macromonomer (a)-methyl methacrylate (b) copolymerization. These values were not consistent with literature values for the styrene-methyl methacrylate and p-methoxy-styrene-methyl methacrylate systems. The reactivity ratios estimated for MPA and 2-bromoethyl methacrylate were ra - 0.95 and rb , = 0.98; equal to the glycidyl methacrylate-2-bromoethyl methacrylate system. MPA or MPM was also copolymerized with styrene, and the reactivity ratios were ra = 0.40, ra = 0.60 and ra = 0.39, ra = 0.58, respectively. These estimates were in good agreement with the reactivity ratios for glycidyl methacrylate and styrene. Thus, no effect of molecular weight was observed for both copolymerization systems.  相似文献
