This paper presents a method for solving multiperiod investment models with downside risk control characterized by the portfolio’s worst outcome. The stochastic programming problem is decomposed into two subproblems: a nonlinear optimization model identifying the optimal terminal wealth distribution and a stochastic linear programming model replicating the identified optimal portfolio wealth. The replicating portfolio coincides with the optimal solution to the investor’s problem if the market is frictionless. The multiperiod stochastic linear programming model tests for the absence of arbitrage opportunities and its dual feasible solutions generate all risk neutral probability measures. When there are constraints such as liquidity or position requirements, the method yields approximate portfolio policies by minimizing the initial cost of the replication portfolio. A numerical example illustrates the difference between the replicating result and the optimal unconstrained portfolio.  相似文献

Using five alternative data sets and a range of specifications concerning the underlying linear predictability models, we study whether long-run dynamic optimizing portfolio strategies may actually outperform simpler benchmarks in out-of-sample tests. The dynamic portfolio problems are solved using a combination of dynamic programming and Monte Carlo methods. The benchmarks are represented by two typical fixed mix strategies: the celebrated equally-weighted portfolio and a myopic, Markowitz-style strategy that fails to account for any predictability in asset returns. Within a framework in which the investor maximizes expected HARA (constant relative risk aversion) utility in a frictionless market, our key finding is that there are enormous difference in optimal long-horizon (in-sample) weights between the mean–variance benchmark and the optimal dynamic weights. In out-of-sample comparisons, there is however no clear-cut, systematic, evidence that long-horizon dynamic strategies outperform naively diversified portfolios.  相似文献

In this paper we discuss the asset allocation in the presence of small proportional transaction costs. The objective is to keep the asset portfolio close to a target portfolio and at the same time to reduce the trading cost in doing so. We derive the variational inequality and prove a verification theorem. Furthermore, we apply the second order asymptotic expansion method to characterize explicitly the optimal no transaction region when the transaction cost is small and show that the boundary points are asymmetric in relation to the target portfolio position, in contrast to the symmetric relation when only the first order asymptotic expansion method is used, and the leading order is a constant proportion of the cubic root of the small transaction cost. In addition, we use the asymptotic results for the boundary points and obtain an expansion for the value function. The results are illustrated in the numerical example.  相似文献

This paper concerns optimal dynamic portfolio choice with quadratic utility when there are market impact costs. The optimal policy is difficult to characterize, so we look instead for sub-optimal policies. Our proposed suboptimal policy solves a tractable dynamic portfolio choice problem where the cost of trading is captured in the objective instead of the price dynamics. A multiple time scale asymptotic expansion shows that our proposed policy has sensible structural properties, while numerical experiments show promising performance and robustness properties.  相似文献

This paper broadens research literature associated with the assessment of modern portfolio risk management techniques by presenting a thorough modeling of nonlinear dynamic asset allocation and management under the supposition of illiquid and adverse market settings. Specifically, the paper proposes a re-engineered and robust approach to optimal economic capital allocation, in a Liquidity-Adjusted Value at Risk (L-VaR) framework, and particularly from the perspective of trading portfolios that have both long and short-sales trading positions. This paper expands previous approaches by explicitly modeling the liquidation of trading portfolios, over the holding period, with the aid of an appropriate scaling of the multiple-assets’ L-VaR matrix along with GARCH-M technique to forecast conditional volatility and expected return. Moreover, in this paper, the authors develop a dynamic nonlinear portfolio selection model and an optimization algorithm which allocates both economic capital and trading assets subject to some selected financial and operational rational constraints. The empirical results strongly confirm the importance of enforcing financially and operationally meaningful nonlinear and dynamic constraints, when they are available, on economic capital optimization procedure. The empirical results are interesting in terms of theory as well as practical applications and can aid in developing robust portfolio management algorithms that financial entities could consider in light of the aftermath of the latest financial crisis.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider the optimal consumption and portfolio policies with the consumption habit constraints and the terminal wealth downside constraints, that is, here the consumption rate is greater than or equal to some nonnegative process, and the terminal wealth is no less than some positive constant. Using the martingale approach, we get the optimal consumption and portfolio policies.  相似文献

In this paper, a financial market with Markovian switching and inflation is described, and the problem of maximizing expected utility of consumption discounted by inflation is given. Then, by a generalized Itô formula for Markov-modulated processes, the verification theorems of optimal policies are derived. Finally, the optimal consumption and portfolio policies for the constant relative risk aversion utility are given explicitly, and an economic analysis is made by numerical examples.  相似文献

We investigate an optimal portfolio, consumption and retirement decision problem in which an economic agent can determine the discretionary stopping time as a retirement time with constant labor wage and disutility. We allow the preference of the agent to be changed before and after retirement. It is assumed that the agent's coefficient of relative risk aversion becomes higher after retirement. Under a constant relative risk aversion (CRRA) utility function, we obtain the optimal policies in closed-forms using martingale methods and variational inequality methods. We give some numerical results of the optimal policies. We also consider the relation between the level of disutility and the labor wage with the optimal retirement wealth level.  相似文献

This paper deals with a mean–variance optimal portfolio selection problem in presence of risky assets characterized by low-frequency trading and, therefore, low liquidity. To model the dynamics of illiquid assets, we introduce pure-jump processes. This leads to the development of a portfolio selection model in a mixed discrete/continuous time setting. We pursue the twofold scope of analyzing and comparing either long-term investment strategies as well as short-term trading rules. The theoretical model is analyzed by applying extensive Monte Carlo experiments, in order to provide useful insights from a financial perspective.  相似文献

Some recent results for frictionless economies show that popular dynamic portfolio strategies such as stop-loss and lock-in are inefficient. I.e for each of these strategies there exists an alternative portfolio strategy that gives the same final payoff distribution at lower initial costs. However, the alternative strategies require considerably more active trading than the simple strategies. The results rely heavily on the assumption of no transaction costs. Under this assumption the initial investment required is a linear function of the prices of the contingent claims that build the final payoff distribution. In this paper we demonstrate that, even for modest levels of transaction costs, the efficient strategies are more costly than the simple strategies, i.e. a strategy that replicates the final payoff distribution of an efficient strategy is excessively costly due to the transaction costs and the heavy trading involved. Since the initial investment is no longer a linear function of the contingent claims, the optimization problems to find the most efficient strategy are complicated combinatorial optimization problems which can only be solved for trees with a small number of steps. In a world without transaction costs, options are redundant instruments, since all payoff distributions can be replicated by trading in stocks and bonds. In the second half of this paper we show that the use of options in a world with transaction costs enables investors to realize final value distributions at lower initial costs than would be possible with trades in stocks an bonds only. Hence, although in theory options do not give rise to other portfolio strategies, they do in a more restrictive setting with transaction costs.  相似文献

In this paper we study an optimal portfolio selection problem under instantaneous price impact. Based on some empirical analysis in the literature, we model such impact as a concave function of the trading size when the trading size is small. The price impact can be thought of as either a liquidity cost or a transaction cost, but the concavity nature of the cost leads to some fundamental difference from those in the existing literature. We show that the problem can be reduced to an impulse control problem, but without fixed cost, and that the value function is a viscosity solution to a special type of Quasi-Variational Inequality (QVI). We also prove directly (without using the solution to the QVI) that the optimal strategy exists and more importantly, despite the absence of a fixed cost, it is still in a “piecewise constant” form, reflecting a more practical perspective.  相似文献

The question of optimal portfolio is that finds the trading strategy satisfying the maximal expected utility function subject to some constraints. There is the optimal trading strategy under the risk neutral probability measure (martingale measure) if and only if there is no-arbitrage opportunity in the market. This paper argues the optimal wealth and the optimal value of expected utility with different utility function.  相似文献

Mean-variance versus expected utility in dynamic investment analysis   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Given the existence of a Markovian state price density process, this paper extends Merton??s continuous time (instantaneous) mean-variance analysis and the mutual fund separation theory in which the risky fund can be chosen to be the growth optimal portfolio. The CAPM obtains without the assumption of log-normality for prices. The optimal investment policies for the case of a hyperbolic absolute risk aversion (HARA) utility function are derived analytically. It is proved that only the quadratic utility exhibits the global mean-variance efficiency among the family of HARA utility functions. A numerical comparison is made between the growth optimal portfolio and the mean-variance analysis for the case of log-normal prices. The optimal choice of target return which maximizes the probability that the mean-variance analysis outperforms the expected utility portfolio is discussed. Mean variance analysis is better near the mean and the expected utility maximization is better in the tails.  相似文献

In this paper we introduce the notion of portfolio optimization by maximizing expected local utility. This concept is related to maximization of expected utility of consumption but, contrary to this common approach, the discounted financial gains are consumed immediately. In a general continuous-time market optimal portfolios are obtained by pointwise solution of equations involving the semimartingale characteristics of the underlying securities price process. The new concept is applied to hedging problems in frictionless, incomplete markets.  相似文献

We consider several multiperiod portfolio optimization models where the market consists of a riskless asset and several risky assets. The returns in any period are random with a mean vector and a covariance matrix that depend on the prevailing economic conditions in the market during that period. An important feature of our model is that the stochastic evolution of the market is described by a Markov chain with perfectly observable states. Various models involving the safety-first approach, coefficient of variation and quadratic utility functions are considered where the objective functions depend only on the mean and the variance of the final wealth. An auxiliary problem that generates the same efficient frontier as our formulations is solved using dynamic programming to identify optimal portfolio management policies for each problem. Illustrative cases are presented to demonstrate the solution procedure with an interpretation of the optimal policies.  相似文献

Asset liability matching remains an important topic in life insurance research. The objective of this paper is to find an optimal asset allocation for a general portfolio of life insurance policies. Using a multi-asset model to investigate the optimal asset allocation of life insurance reserves, this study obtains formulae for the first two moments of the accumulated asset value. These formulae enable the analysis of portfolio problems and a first approximation of optimal investment strategies. This research provides a new perspective for solving both single-period and multiperiod asset allocation problems in application to life insurance policies. The authors obtain an efficient frontier in the case of single-period method; for the multiperiod method, the optimal asset allocation strategies can differ considerably for different portfolio structures.  相似文献

We consider the problem of portfolio optimization under VaR risk measure taking into account transaction costs. Fixed costs as well as impact costs as a nonlinear function of trading activity are incorporated in the optimal portfolio model. Thus the obtained model is a nonlinear optimization problem with nonsmooth objective function. The model is solved by an iterative method based on a smoothing VaR technique. We prove the convergence of the considered iterative procedure and demonstrate the nontrivial influence of transaction costs on the optimal portfolio weights.  相似文献

Consider an equity market with n stocks. The vector of proportions of the total market capitalizations that belong to each stock is called the market weight. The market weight defines the market portfolio which is a buy-and-hold portfolio representing the performance of the entire stock market. Consider a function that assigns a portfolio vector to each possible value of the market weight, and we perform self-financing trading using this portfolio function. We study the problem of characterizing functions such that the resulting portfolio will outperform the market portfolio in the long run under the conditions of diversity and sufficient volatility. No other assumption on the future behavior of stock prices is made. We prove that the only solutions are functionally generated portfolios in the sense of Fernholz. A second characterization is given as the optimal maps of a remarkable optimal transport problem. Both characterizations follow from a novel property of portfolios called multiplicative cyclical monotonicity.  相似文献

A new risk measure fully based on historical data is proposed, from which we can naturally derive concentrated optimal portfolios rather than imposing cardinality constraints. The new risk measure can be expressed as a quadratics of the introduced greedy matrix, which takes investors' joint behavior into account. We construct distribution‐free portfolio selection models in simple case and realistic case, respectively. The latest techniques for describing transaction cost constraints and solving nonconvex quadratic programs are utilized to obtain the optimal portfolio efficiently. In order to show the practicality, efficiency, and robustness of our new risk measure and corresponding portfolio selection models, a series of empirical studies are carried out with trading data from advanced stock markets and emerging stock markets. Different performance indicators are adopted to comprehensively compare results obtained under our new models with those obtained under the mean‐variance, mean‐semivariance, and mean‐conditional value‐at‐risk models. Out‐of‐sample results sufficiently show that our models outperform the others and provide a simple and practical approach for choosing concentrated, efficient, and robust portfolios. We study the problem of optimal investment by embedding it in the general conjugate duality framework of convex analysis. This allows for various extensions to classical models of liquid markets. In particular, we obtain a dual representation for the optimum value function in the presence of portfolio constraints and nonlinear trading costs that are encountered e.g. in modern limit order markets. The optimization problem is parameterized by a sequence of financial claims. Such a parameterization is essential in markets without a numeraire asset when pricing swap contracts and other financial products with multiple payout dates. In the special case of perfectly liquid markets or markets with proportional transaction costs, we recover well-known dual expressions in terms of martingale measures.  相似文献
