On total chromatic number of planar graphs without 4-cycles   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Let G be a simple graph with maximum degree A(G) and total chromatic number Xve(G). Vizing conjectured thatΔ(G) 1≤Xve(G)≤Δ(G) 2 (Total Chromatic Conjecture). Even for planar graphs, this conjecture has not been settled yet. The unsettled difficult case for planar graphs isΔ(G) = 6. This paper shows that if G is a simple planar graph with maximum degree 6 and without 4-cycles, then Xve(G)≤8. Together with the previous results on this topic, this shows that every simple planar graph without 4-cycles satisfies the Total Chromatic Conjecture.  相似文献

The Hadwiger number η(G) of a graph G is the largest integer n for which the complete graph K n on n vertices is a minor of G. Hadwiger conjectured that for every graph G, η(G) ≥ χ(G), where χ(G) is the chromatic number of G. In this paper, we study the Hadwiger number of the Cartesian product of graphs. As the main result of this paper, we prove that for any two graphs G 1 and G 2 with η(G 1) = h and η(G 2) = l. We show that the above lower bound is asymptotically best possible when h ≥ l. This asymptotically settles a question of Z. Miller (1978). As consequences of our main result, we show the following:
1.  Let G be a connected graph. Let be the (unique) prime factorization of G. Then G satisfies Hadwiger’s conjecture if k ≥ 2 log log χ(G) + c′, where c′ is a constant. This improves the 2 log χ(G) + 3 bound in [2].
2.  Let G 1 and G 2 be two graphs such that χ(G 1) ≥ χ(G 2) ≥ c log1.5(χ(G 1)), where c is a constant. Then satisfies Hadwiger’s conjecture.
3.  Hadwiger’s conjecture is true for G d (Cartesian product of G taken d times) for every graph G and every d ≥ 2. This settles a question by Chandran and Sivadasan [2]. (They had shown that the Hadiwger’s conjecture is true for G d if d ≥ 3).

The total chromatic number χT (G) of a graph G is the minimum number of colors needed to color the edges and the vertices of G so that incident or adjacent elements have distinct colors. We show that if G is a regular graph and d(G) 32 |V (G)| + 263 , where d(G) denotes the degree of a vertex in G, then χT (G) d(G) + 2.  相似文献

The trivial lower bound for the 2-distance chromatic number χ 2(G) of a graph G with maximum degree Δ is Δ + 1. There are available some examples of the graphs with girth g ≤ 6 that have arbitrarily large Δ and χ 2(G) ≥ Δ + 2. In the paper we improve the known restrictions on Δ and g under which a planar graph G has χ 2(G) = Δ + 1.  相似文献

A well-known and essential result due to Roy ([4], 1967) and independently to Gallai ([3], 1968) is that if D is a digraph with chromatic number χ(D), then D contains a directed path of at least χ(D) vertices. We generalize this result by showing that if ψ(D) is the minimum value of the number of the vertices in a longest directed path starting from a vertex that is connected to every vertex of D, then χ(D) ≤ψ(D). For graphs, we give a positive answer to the following question of Fajtlowicz: if G is a graph with chromatic number χ(G), then for any proper coloring of G of χ(G) colors and for any vertex vV(G), there is a path P starting at v which represents all χ(G) colors. A proper edge coloring of a graph G is called acyclic if there is no 2-colored cycle in G. The acyclic edge chromatic number of G, denoted by a′(G), is the least number of colors in an acyclic edge coloring of G. Alon et al. conjectured that a′(G) ⩽ Δ(G) + 2 for any graphs. For planar graphs G with girth g(G), we prove that a′(G) ⩽ max{2Δ(G) − 2, Δ(G) + 22} if g(G) ⩾ 3, a′(G) ⩽ Δ(G) + 2 if g(G) ⩾ 5, a′(G) ⩽ Δ(G) + 1 if g(G) ⩾ 7, and a′(G) = Δ(G) if g(G) ⩾ 16 and Δ(G) ⩾ 3. For series-parallel graphs G, we have a′(G) ⩽ Δ(G) + 1. We prove that the identity
holds for all directed graphs G and H. Similar bounds for the usual chromatic number seem to be much harder to obtain: It is still not known whether there exists a number n such that χ(G×H) ≥ 4 for all directed graphs G, H with χ(G) ≥ χ(H) ≥ n. In fact, we prove that for every integer n ≥ 4, there exist directed graphs Gn, Hn such that χ(Gn) = n, χ(Hn) = 4 and χ(Gn×Hn) = 3.  相似文献

The trivial lower bound for the 2-distance chromatic number χ 2(G) of any graph G with maximum degree Δ is Δ+1. It is known that χ 2 = Δ+1 if the girth g of G is at least 7 and Δ is large enough. There are graphs with arbitrarily large Δ and g ≤ 6 having χ 2(G) ≥ Δ+2. We prove the 2-distance 4-colorability of planar subcubic graphs with g ≥ 23, which strengthens a similar result by O. V. Borodin, A. O. Ivanova, and T. K. Neustroeva (2004) and Z. Dvořák, R. Škrekovski, and M. Tancer (2008) for g ≥ 24.  相似文献

On the adjacent-vertex-strongly-distinguishing total coloring of graphs   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
For any vertex u∈V(G), let T_N(U)={u}∪{uv|uv∈E(G), v∈v(G)}∪{v∈v(G)|uv∈E(G)}and let f be a total k-coloring of G. The total-color neighbor of a vertex u of G is the color set C_f(u)={f(x)|x∈TN(U)}. For any two adjacent vertices x and y of V(G)such that C_f(x)≠C_f(y), we refer to f as a k-avsdt-coloring of G("avsdt"is the abbreviation of"adjacent-vertex-strongly- distinguishing total"). The avsdt-coloring number of G, denoted by X_(ast)(G), is the minimal number of colors required for a avsdt-coloring of G. In this paper, the avsdt-coloring numbers on some familiar graphs are studied, such as paths, cycles, complete graphs, complete bipartite graphs and so on. We proveΔ(G) 1≤X_(ast)(G)≤Δ(G) 2 for any tree or unique cycle graph G.  相似文献

The semidefinite programming formulation of the Lovász theta number does not only give one of the best polynomial simultaneous bounds on the chromatic number χ(G) or the clique number ω(G) of a graph, but also leads to heuristics for graph coloring and extracting large cliques. This semidefinite programming formulation can be tightened toward either χ(G) or ω(G) by adding several types of cutting planes. We explore several such strengthenings, and show that some of them can be computed with the same effort as the theta number. We also investigate computational simplifications for graphs with rich automorphism groups. Simple graphs are considered. Let G be a graph andg(x) andf(x) integer-valued functions defined on V(G) withg(x)⩽f(x) for everyxɛV(G). For a subgraphH ofG and a factorizationF=|F 1,F 2,⃛,F 1| ofG, if |E(H)∩E(F 1)|=1,1⩽ij, then we say thatF orthogonal toH. It is proved that for an (mg(x)+k,mf(x) -k)-graphG, there exists a subgraphR ofG such that for any subgraphH ofG with |E(H)|=k,R has a (g,f)-factorization orthogonal toH, where 1⩽k<m andg(x)⩾1 orf(x)⩾5 for everyxɛV(G). Group Chromatic Number of Graphs without K5-Minors   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Let G be a graph with a fixed orientation and let A be a group. Let F(G,A) denote the set of all functions f: E(G) ↦A. The graph G is A -colorable if for any function fF(G,A), there is a function c: V(G) ↦A such that for every directed e=u vE(G), c(u)−c(v)≠f(e). The group chromatic numberχ1(G) of a graph G is the minimum m such that G is A-colorable for any group A of order at least m under a given orientation D. In [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B, 56 (1992), 165–182], Jaeger et al. proved that if G is a simple planar graph, then χ1(G)≤6. We prove in this paper that if G is a simple graph without a K 5-minor, then χ1(G)≤5. Let χ t (G) and †(G) denote respectively the total chromatic number and maximum degree of graphG. Yap, Wang and Zhang proved in 1989 that ifG is a graph of orderp having †(G)≥p−4, then χ t (G≤Δ(G)+2. Hilton has characterized the class of graphG of order 2n having †(G)=2n−1 such that χ t (G=Δ(G)+2. In this paper, we characterize the class of graphsG of order 2n having †(G)=2n−2 such that χ t (G=Δ(G)+2 Research supported by National Science Council of the Republic of China (NSC 79-0208-M009-15)  相似文献

If G is a connected graph of order n ⩾ 1, then by a hamiltonian coloring of G we mean a mapping c of V (G) into the set of all positive integers such that |c(x) − c(y)| ⩾ n − 1 − D G (x, y) (where D G (x, y) denotes the length of a longest xy path in G) for all distinct x, yV (G). Let G be a connected graph. By the hamiltonian chromatic number of G we mean
, where the minimum is taken over all hamiltonian colorings c of G. The main result of this paper can be formulated as follows: Let G be a connected graph of order n ⩾ 3. Assume that there exists a subgraph F of G such that F is a hamiltonian-connected graph of order i, where 2 ⩽ i ⩽ 1/2 (n+1). Then hc(G) ⩽ (n−2)2+1−2(i−1)(i−2).  相似文献

On Group Chromatic Number of Graphs   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Let G be a graph and A an Abelian group. Denote by F(G, A) the set of all functions from E(G) to A. Denote by D an orientation of E(G). For fF(G,A), an (A,f)-coloring of G under the orientation D is a function c : V(G)↦A such that for every directed edge uv from u to v, c(u)−c(v) ≠ f(uv). G is A-colorable under the orientation D if for any function fF(G, A), G has an (A, f)-coloring. It is known that A-colorability is independent of the choice of the orientation. The group chromatic number of a graph G is defined to be the least positive integer m for which G is A-colorable for any Abelian group A of order ≥m, and is denoted by χg(G). In this note we will prove the following results. (1) Let H1 and H2 be two subgraphs of G such that V(H1)∩V(H2)=∅ and V(H1)∪V(H2)=V(G). Then χg(G)≤min{max{χg(H1), maxvV(H2)deg(v,G)+1},max{χg(H2), maxuV(H1) deg (u, G) + 1}}. We also show that this bound is best possible. (2) If G is a simple graph without a K3,3-minor, then χg(G)≤5.  相似文献

A graph is called a proper refinement of a star graph if it is a refinement of a star graph, but it is neither a star graph nor a complete graph. For a refinement of a star graph G with center c, let G c * be the subgraph of G induced on the vertex set V (G)\ {c or end vertices adjacent to c}. In this paper, we study the isomorphic classification of some finite commutative local rings R by investigating their zero-divisor graphs G = Γ(R), which is a proper refinement of a star graph with exactly one center c. We determine all finite commutative local rings R such that G c * has at least two connected components. We prove that the diameter of the induced graph G c * is two if Z(R)2 ≠ {0}, Z(R)3 = {0} and G c * is connected. We determine the structure of R which has two distinct nonadjacent vertices α, βZ(R)* \ {c} such that the ideal [N(α) ∩ N(β)]∪ {0} is generated by only one element of Z(R)*\{c}. We also completely determine the correspondence between commutative rings and finite complete graphs K n with some end vertices adjacent to a single vertex of K n .  相似文献

We prove (in ZFC) that for every infinite cardinal ϰ there are two graphsG 0,G 1 with χ(G 0)=χ(G 1)=ϰ+ and χ(G 0×G 1)=ϰ. We also prove a result from the other direction. If χ(G 0)≧≧ℵ0 and χ(G 1)=k<ω, then χ(G 0×G 1)=k.  相似文献

A vertex coloring of a graph G is called injective if every two vertices joined by a path of length 2 get different colors. The minimum number χ i (G) of the colors required for an injective coloring of a graph G is clearly not less than the maximum degree Δ(G) of G. There exist planar graphs with girth g ≥ 6 and χ i = Δ+1 for any Δ ≥ 2. We prove that every planar graph with Δ ≥ 18 and g ≥ 6 has χ i ≤ Δ + 1.  相似文献

If G is an embedded graph, a vertex-face r-coloring is a mapping that assigns a color from the set {1, . . . ,r} to every vertex and every face of G such that different colors are assigned whenever two elements are either adjacent or incident. Let χvf(G) denote the minimum r such that G has a vertex-face r-coloring. Ringel conjectured that if G is planar, then χvf(G)≤6. A graph G drawn on a surface S is said to be 1-embedded in S if every edge crosses at most one other edge. Borodin proved that if G is 1-embedded in the plane, then χ(G)≤6. This result implies Ringel's conjecture. Ringel also stated a Heawood style theorem for 1-embedded graphs. We prove a slight strengthening of this result. If G is 1-embedded in S, let w(G) denote the edge-width of G, i.e. the length of a shortest non-contractible cycle in G. We show that if G is 1-embedded in S and w(G) is large enough, then the list chromatic number ch(G) is at most 8. Work completed while the author was the Neil R. The Entire Coloring of Series-Parallel Graphs   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The entire chromatic number X_(vef)(G) of a plane graph G is the minimal number of colors needed for coloring vertices, edges and faces of G such that no two adjacent or incident elements are of the same color. Let G be a series-parallel plane graph, that is, a plane graph which contains no subgraphs homeomorphic to K_(4-) It is proved in this paper that X_(vef)(G)≤max{8, △(G) 2} and X_(vef)(G)=△ 1 if G is 2-connected and △(G)≥6.  相似文献
