We review and summarize the three-phase behavior and solubilization of microemulsions with catanionic surfactants. Particular emphasis is placed to the three-phase behavior of mixtures of oil, water and alcohol with mixed surfactants containing one anionic and one cationic surfactant. The effect of salt and catanionic surfactant on the HLB composition and solubilizing capacity of surfactants to form microemulsions is discussed.  相似文献

Microemulsions may have very different microstructures: discrete water or oil droplets and bicontinuous — depending, inter alia, on the surfactant polarity, salinity, temperature, and co-surfactant. A review is given on structure determination of microemulsions of different systems and the conditions for occurrence of different structures. Polymer addition may dramatically influence microemulsion stability and structure and examples are given for different types of polymers and discussed on the basis of mixed solutions of polymers and surfactants in general.Opening lecture at the Emulsions Symposium, Toronto, May 1994  相似文献

The formation and microstructure of cubic phases were investigated in anionic and cationic surfactant-containing systems at 25 degrees C. In the system sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS)-dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide(DTAB)-water, mixing of two surfactants shows the phase transition hexagonal phase (H(1))-->surfactant precipitate, accompanied by an obvious decrease in the cross-sectional area per surfactant in the rod micelles of the hexagonal liquid crystal. In the mixed systems brine(A)-dodecane(B)-SDS(C)-DTAB(D)-hexanol(E), the isotropic discontinuous cubic phase is formed from the H(1) phase at a low cationic surfactant weight fraction, Y=D/(C+D), and from the lamellar phase at high Y upon dilution with equal amounts of oil and brine, respectively. The minimum surfactant concentration to form the cubic phase decreases with increases both in cationic surfactant weight fraction Y from 0 to 0.30 and in hexanol weight fraction, W(1)=E/(C+D+E), accordingly. The maximum solubilization for oil of the cubic phase reaches 43 wt% at 14 wt% of mixed surfactants and alcohol. Copyright 2000 Academic Press.  相似文献

Designing low density polymeric porous materials with defined pore sizes (diameters in the 100 nm range) still remains a real synthesis challenge. Here, for the first time, we present a strategy by which bicontinuous microemulsions are used as templating agents for the in-situ aqueous polycondensation of organic resins (melamine formaldehyde, MF). The behaviour of surfactants with different head-groups in systems including oil and MF-containing aqueous phase is studied. While many surfactants are not compatible with aqueous MF precondensates, here we report a non-ionic surfactant either used solely or along with anionic surfactants which prove to be successful at keeping bicontinuous microemulsion systems homogeneous even during early stages of polymerisation. However, upon acid-catalysis it becomes clear that the pore structure of the organic material is largely controlled by the kinetics of phase separation due to the sol–gel process rather than by the thermodynamic equilibrium of the template (microemulsion). Indeed, despite numerous attempts, stabilising the microemulsion interface with zero curvature (bicontinuous) has remained problematic. Instead, we show a new behaviour for the MF resin whereby non-spherical MF morphologies (i.e. thread-like structures) can be obtained by specific interactions between the aqueous amino resin and the acid counterions.  相似文献

Most toxic industrial chemicals and chemical warfare agents are hydrophobic and can only be solubilized in organic solvents. However, most reagents employed for the degradation of these toxic compounds can only be dissolved in water. Hence, microemulsions are auspicious media for the decontamination of a variety of chemical warfare agents and pesticides. They allow for the solubilization of both the lipophilic toxics and the hydrophilic reagent. Alkyl oligoglucosides and plant derived solvents like rapeseed methyl ester enable the formulation of environmentally compatible bicontinuous microemulsions. In the present article the phase behavior of such a microemulsion is studied and the bicontinuous phase is identified. Small angle neutron scattering (SANS) and freeze fracture electron microscopy (FFEM) measurements are used to characterize the structure of the bicontinuous phase and allow for an estimation of the total internal interface. Moreover, also the influence of the co-surfactant (1-pentanol) on the structural parameters of the bicontinuous phase is studied with SANS.  相似文献

Sugar-based microemulsion glass templates   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Complex fluids comprising of surfactants with water and/or oil form a rich variety of dynamic self-assembled structures, ranging from spherical swollen micelles, viscous rod-like micelles, and bicontinuous microemulsions to ordered liquid crystalline phases. The wide range of practical and specialized applications of complex fluids has made them the subject of intense research for many decades. Here, we demonstrate for the first time how bicontinuous microemulsions containing equal masses of oil and sugar can be driven to the glassy state without phase separation at ambient temperatures by controlled desiccation of sugar-rich microemulsions. The robust nanostructure of these microemulsion glasses allows polymerization of hydrophobic liquid monomers within the interstices of the glassy microemulsion template without macroscopic phase separation. Yet after polymerization, the sugar and surfactant template can be easily removed by dissolution in water.  相似文献

In this work, for the first time, the Hydrophilic-Lipophilic Difference (HLD) framework for microemulsion formulation has been applied to silicone oils and silicone alkyl polyether surfactants. Based on the HLD equations and recently introduced mixing rules, we have quantified the hydrophobicity of the oils according to the equivalent alkane carbon number (EACN). We have found that, in a reference system containing sodium dihexyl sulfosuccinate (SDHS) as the surfactant, 0.65 centistoke (cSt) and 3.0 cSt silicone oils behave like n-dodecane and n-pentadecane, respectively. Silicone alkyl polyether surfactants were found to have characteristic curvatures ranging 3.4-18.9, exceeding that of most non-ionic surfactants. The introduction of methacrylic acid (MAA) and hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) to the aqueous phase caused a significant negative shift in HLD, indicative of an aqueous phase that is less hydrophilic than pure water. The more hydrophobic surfactants (largest positive curvatures) were used in order to compensate for this effect. These findings have led to the formulation of bicontinuous microemulsions (μEs) containing silicone oil, silicone alkyl polyether and reactive monomers in aqueous solution. Ternary phase diagrams of these systems revealed the potential for silicone-containing polymer composites with bicontinuous morphologies. These findings have also helped to explain the phase behavior of formulations previously reported in literature, and could help in providing a systematic, consistent approach to future silicone oil based microemulsion formulation.  相似文献

An anionic surfactant, synthesized with ricinoleic acid from castor oil, was obtained and its behavior in terms of microemulsion formation (via pseudo-ternary diagram analysis) and liquid-gas surface tension (both for microemulsions and pure surfactant-water systems) was determined as a function of temperature and NaCl concentration in the aqueous phase. Microemulsions were formed by using butanol as co-surfactant and kerosene as the oil phase. Concerning the pseudoternary diagrams, the increase in NaCl concentration resulted in a decrease in the Winsor IV region, which was correlated to a possible occurrence of nonmicellar aggregates, induced by the high concentration of NaCl in the aqueous phase. Surface tension measurements also indicated that at the very high NaCl concentrations used there could be the formation of surfactant aggregates. The oil phase in microemulsionated systems decreased surface tension (but increased CMC): Possible interactions between isolated surfactant molecules and molecules from the oil phase were used to explain these results.  相似文献

The Scandinavian surface (surfactant) and colloid science owes much of its success to Per Ekwall and Björn Lindman. In this review the main topics shared by their research groups at Åbo Akademi University in Finland and at Lund University in Sweden are described. The nature of surface active substances (cosolvents, co-surfactants and surfactants) and microemulsions are evaluated. It is shown that the properties of medium-chain length surfactants differ dramatically from long-chain surfactants. The phase equilibriums of binary systems are related to the phase equilibriums of ternary and quaternary systems referred to as microemulsions or more recently also as nanoemulsions. A distinction is made between hydrotrope liquids, detergentless microemulsions, surfactant mixture systems and microemulsions. Three component systems are assembled to “true” quaternary microemulsions. An exceptionally comprehensive network of thermodynamic parameters describing molecular site exchange and micelle formation are derived and related mutually. Gibbs free energy, enthalpy, entropy, volume, heat capacity, expansivity and compressibility can be used to illustrate the degree of aggregation cooperativity and to evaluate whether micelle formation is of a first-, second- or intermediate order phase transition. Theoretical simulations and experimental results show that the associate structures of medium-chain length surfactants are quite open and may be deformed due to small aggregation numbers. The self-assembly occurs over a number of distinct steps at a series of experimentally detectable critical concentrations. Despite the low aggregation tendency their phase behavior equals those of long-chain homologs in surfactant mixture and microemulsion systems. A number of models describing the self-assembly are reviewed. Nuclear magnetic resonance (shift, relaxation rate and diffusion), Laser Raman and infrared spectroscopies were chosen as key instruments for molecular interaction characterization since they were used in the collaboration between the research groups in Åbo and in Lund. A new method is introduced in order to evaluate the traditional procedure for extracting limiting parameters which also enables an illustration of the degree of cooperativity. The focus is laid mainly on aqueous, alcoholic, saline and, to a limited extent oil phases of one-, two-, three- and four component systems of water–sodium carboxylates–alcohol–oil. The extensive thermodynamic characterization of these liquid phases and liquid crystalline phases is left out due to space restrictions.  相似文献

The transition from liquid crystalline to microemulsion phases has been investigated by adding oil to surfactant—alcohol—brine mixtures in two systems containing anionic surfactants. At high salinities where the surfactant is preferentially soluble in oil, addition of oil first causes transition from a lamellar liquid crystal to a water-continuous isotropic phase which exhibits streaming birefringence and probably contains large, anisotropic micelles. This isotropic phase inverts to an oil-continuous microemulsion as oil content further increases. At somewhat lower salinities just below the “optimum” where the surfactant has equal solubilization capacities for oil and brine, the system passes through three three-phase regions as oil is added. In order of increasing oil content, these consist of two microemulsions in equilibrium with a lamellar liquid crystalline phase, the same two microemulsions in equilibrium with excess brine, and a microemulsion in equilibrium with excess oil and excess brine.  相似文献

A key feature of amphiphilic molecules is their ability to undergo self-assembly, a process in which a complex hierarchical structure is established without external intervention. Ternary systems consisting of aqueous mixtures of cationic and anionic surfactants exhibit a rich array of self-assembled microstructures such as spherical and rodlike micelles, unilamellar and multilamellar vesicles, planar bilayers, and bicontinuous structures. In general, multiple complementary techniques are required to explore the phase behavior and morphology of aqueous systems of oppositely charged surfactants. As a novel and effective alternative approach, we use fluorescence spectroscopic measurements to examine the microstructures of aqueous cationic/anionic surfactant systems in the dilute surfactant region. In particular, we demonstrate that the polarity-sensitive fluorophore prodan can be used to demarcate the surfactant microstructures of the ternary system of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, sodium octyl sulfate, and water. As the fluorescence signature of this probe is dependent on the nature of the surfactant aggregates present, our method is a promising new approach to effectively map complex surfactant phase diagrams.  相似文献

Two phases coexist in an aqueous system that contains the two surfactants cationic gemini 12‐3‐12,2Br? and anionic SDS. An aqueous two‐phase system (ATPS) is formed in a narrow region of the ternary phase diagram different from that of traditional aqueous cationic‐anionic surfactant systems. In that region, the molar ratio of gemini to SDS varies with the total concentration of surfactants. ATPS not only has higher stability but also has longer phase separation time for the new systems than that of the traditional system. Furthermore, the optical properties of ATPS are different at different total concentrations. All of these experimental observations can be attributed to the unique properties of gemini surfactant and the synergy between the cationic gemini surfactant and the anionic surfactant SDS.  相似文献

The relationship between the properties of surfactant monolayers at oil-water interfaces and the phase behaviour in bulk of mixtures of oil + water + surfactant is discussed. Such monolayer properties include the spontaneous curvature, co the interfacial tension, I γ, the elasticity K (or rigidity) associated with the mean curvature, and the elasticity K associated with the Gaussian curvature. The model system chosen for investigation is the anionic surfactant AOT + aqueous NaCl + n-alkane at 20°C. In such systems, inversion of microemulsion type from oil-in-water (o/w) to water-in-oil (w/o) is possible with increasing electrolyte concentration. The tension, γ, passes through an ultralow minimum value at conditions corresponding to the formation of three phases. Using small angle neutron scattering, we have determined the structure of surfactant-rich third phases (co ~ 0) formed with the different alkanes. Lamellar phases consisting of surfactant monolayers separated alternately by oil and water appear with short alkanes, whereas L3 and bicontinuous phases form in systems containing longer alkanes. The bending elasticity K has been measured for planar monolayers at the oil-water interface by ellipsometry. K is independent of salt concentration but depends markedly on alkane chain length N, falling from ~ 1 kBT for N < 11 to ~0.1 kBT for N = 14. This is discussed in terms of the differing extents of oil penetration into the surfactant chains. Higher rigidities favouring lamellar phases and lower rigidities favouring bicontinuous microemulsions are in line with the theoretical predictions of de Gennes and Taupin. Estimates of the constant K have been obtained in droplet microemulsions (w/o) from a knowledge of their size, K and γ. The sign of the constant is in agreement with the geometry of the phases formed in three phase systems. Finally, the ideas and concepts developed in the oil-water systems described above are used to explain the wetting behaviour by alkanes of AOT monolayers at the air-water surface.  相似文献

U-type microemulsions formulated with water, mixed nonionic surfactants, and peppermint oil were used to solubilize celecoxib. Microemulsion dilution and interfacial factors contributing to the celecoxib solubilization were evaluated. Celecoxib solubilization capacity decreases with the increase in the water content. Electrical conductivity, dynamic viscosity, and SAXS measurements reveal the structural transition occurring in the microemulsion region. It was found that below 0.25 aqueous phase volume fraction the water-in-oil microemulsions are present, the transition between the water-in-oil to bicontinuous and then to oil-in water microemulsions occur at 0.30 and 0.8 aqueous phase volume fraction, respectively. The results demonstrate that the solubilized drug affects the transition from bicontinuous to water-in-oil microemulsions. The solubilized drug increases the hydrodynamic radius of the oil-in-water microemulsion droplets measured by dynamic light scattering.  相似文献

A unique triblock surfactant is reported that allows for the efficient microemulsification of triglycerides. Unlike the results of all previous efforts, these triglyceride microemulsions can be formed without the use of cosurfactants or dilution with co-oils and follow the classical patterns of surfactant phase behavior exhibited by mixtures of water, alkane oils, and nonionic oligoethylene glycol surfactants, i.e., progression from oil/water emulsions to one-phase microemulsions to water/oil emulsions with increasing temperature. Lamellar phases that usually dominate the aqueous phase behavior of surfactant/triglyceride mixtures are suppressed, allowing for the formation of single-phase microemulsions containing equal amounts of triglyceride and water. These isotropic and low-viscous fluids are particularly useful for cleansing and delivery of functional ingredients in skin care products. The effects of mixing a variety of typical skin care ingredients and components of sebum (skin oil) were also explored. Fatty acids significantly reduce the average microemulsion temperature, while other ingredients and oils, which do not partition at the oil/water interface, have less impact on the phase behavior. In all cases, one-phase microemulsions containing equal amounts of oil and water can be formed even at high additive concentrations. Indeed, partial replacement oftriglyceride with any of the additives examined consistently reduced the amount of surfactant necessary to form single-phase microemulsions. However, the greatest boost in surfactant efficiency was found with the addition of medium molecular weight amphiphilic block copolymers.  相似文献

In this work, a cationic surfactant, dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB), and an anionic surfactant, sodium dodecylsulfonate (SDSO(3)) or sodium dodecylsulfate (SDSO(4)), were mixed in an equimolar ratio to prepare SDSO(3)-DTAB and SDSO(4)-DTAB binary mixtures. The phase behavior, structure, and morphology of these two surfactant mixtures were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, synchrotron X-ray scattering, freeze-fracture electron microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. It was found that upon heating, both of the two systems transform from multilamellar crystalline phase to liquid crystalline (or fluid) phase. It is interesting to find that, although SDSO(3) has a lower molecular weight, the crystalline phase of SDSO(3)-DTAB shows much higher thermostability as compared with that of SDSO(4)-DTAB. Other than this, we observed a large difference in the repeat distances of the two crystalline phases. More interestingly, at 60 °C in the fluid phases, cylindrical micelles formed in the SDSO(3)-DTAB system, while spherical micelles were observed in the SDSO(4)-DTAB system. Our present work demonstrates that a subtle difference in the headgroup structure of the anionic component markedly affects the thermostability, packing structure, and morphology of the surfactant mixtures, which suggests the importance of the match of the head-head and tail-tail interactions between the cationic and anionic surfactants.  相似文献

The solubilization of water in w/o microemulsions formed with mixed-surfactants containing one anionic and one cationic surfactant and alcohol was studied as a function of alkyl chain length of oil (C6 to C16), mixed-surfactant (sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS, and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, CTAB, or cetylpyridinium bromide CPB), and alcohol (1-butanol, 1-pentanol, 1-hexanol). The results show that the solubilization of water in microemulsion systems increases significantly with the mixed-surfactants due to the synergistic effect resulting from the strong Coulombic interactions between cationic and anionic surfactants and the solubilizing efficiency increases as the chain length or concentration of alcohol increases. With increasing the oil chain length the solubilization for water increases, decreases, and has the chain length compatibility effect when the systems contain 1-hexanol, 1-butanol, 1-pentanol, respectively. The total solubilizing capacity increases as the surfactant concentration (keep the ratio of SDS to butanol constant) increases.  相似文献

The transparent Winsor IV domain in the phase diagram of the mixtures of emulsifier (Triton X-100 and butanol), oil (kerosene), and water is found to be 34% of the total phase diagram in presence of emulsifier with surfactant:cosurfactant::1:1, and is water dominant. Increase in cosurfactant/surfactant ratio inverts the Winsor IV domain to become oil rich. The plot of conductance of the microemulsions prepared by substituting water by brine against water content depicts the existence of three distinct phases like oil-in-water, bicontinuous, and water-in-oil microemulsion in the phase diagram. The phase contrast micrographs of the mixtures of different compositions in these three different phases reveal the existence of microdroplets of oil dispersed in water and water dispersed in oil. Further, the dynamic light scattering studies of these solutions reveal an inhomogeneity in the size distribution of the droplets. A temperature-induced clouding in the microemulsion domain leading to phase separation has been observed. Additives like glucose, sucrose, and sodium chloride decrease the cloud point (CP), while addition of ammonium thiocyanate increases it. A quantitative relationship of the clouding temperature with the composition of the microemulsion has been established. With increase in oil and emulsifier, the cloud point of the microemulsion increases. The separated phases after the clouding have been used for preconcentration of water-soluble metal ions as well as oil-soluble dyes. The turbid systems on heating led to separation into three isotropic phases which are found to be stable at ambient temperature. The stability of these phases is ascribed to the formation of stable microemulsions by mass transfer from one phase to other.  相似文献
