Summary Many studies, and even official regulations use the name balance cable to describe one of the two ends of the traction cable of a telpher.This definition implies that the end of the cable referred to as balance cable plays a minor part in the efficient running of the telpher.The author shows this interpretation is not justified, in the sense that the two ends of the cable are mechanically equivalent and indispensable to the system. The article shows also that the counter-balance cannot be used as a device adjusting stress during operation, this effect being obtained only through the action of the driving pulley.

An upper bound of the expected order of magnitude is established for the number of mathbb Q{mathbb Q}-rational points of bounded height on Chatelet surfaces defined over mathbb Q{mathbb Q}.     

Comportement asymptotique des solutions d'équations elliptiques semi-linéaires dans RN

Summary We study the asymptotic behaviour in R^N of the solutions of the semilinear elliptic equation – u + u¦u¦^q-1=f where q > 1 and f is a function of L¹(R^N) with compact support. We obtain three rates of decay according to the value of q by respect to N/(N - 2) and we prove that the behaviour of u is isotropic when q(N+1)/(N– 1). We also give an asymptotic expansion of u in each case.

We study long-time behaviour of the solutions of a class of nonlinear parabolic equations, as well as their Hamilton-Jacobi version. The solutions are shown to converge to either periodic fronts, or to steady solutions, modulo a linear growth in time.
