Cauchy problem on non-globally hyperbolic space-times   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
We consider solutions of the Cauchy problem for hyperbolic equations on non-globally hyperbolic space-times containing closed timelike curves (time machines). We prove that for the wave equation on such space-times, there exists a solution of the Cauchy problem that is discontinuous and in some sense unique for arbitrary initial conditions given on a hypersurface at a time preceding the formation of closed timelike curves. If the hypersurface of initial conditions intersects the region containing closed timelike curves, then the solution of the Cauchy problem exists only for initial conditions satisfying a certain self-consistency requirement. This work consists of two parts. In Part I, we shall give a systematic study of Lorentz conformal structure from structural viewpoints. We study manifolds with split-complex structure. We apply general results on split-complex structure for the study of Lorentz surfaces.In Part II, we study the conformal realization of Lorentz surfaces in the Minkowski 3-space via conformal minimal immersions. We apply loop group theoretic Weierstrass-type representation of timelike constant mean curvature for timelike minimal surfaces. Classical integral representation formula for timelike minimal surfaces will be recovered from loop group theoretic viewpoint.  相似文献

We study the geometry of 2-step nilpotent Lie groups endowed with left-invariant Lorentz metrics. After integrating explicitly the geodesic equations, we discuss the problem of the existence of translated geodesics in those groups. A good part of the paper focuses on the existence of closed timelike geodesics in compact Lorentz 2-step nilmanifolds. Other related results, corollaries, and examples are also presented.  相似文献

The main purpose of this paper is to prove that there are no closed timelike geodesics in a (compact or noncompact) flat Lorentz 2-step nilmanifold where is a simply connected 2-step nilpotent Lie group with a flat left-invariant Lorentz metric, and a discrete subgroup of acting on by left translations. For this purpose, we shall first show that if is a 2-step nilpotent Lie group endowed with a flat left-invariant Lorentz metric then the restriction of to the center of is degenerate. We shall then determine all 2-step nilpotent Lie groups that can admit a flat left-invariant Lorentz metric. We show that they are trivial central extensions of the three-dimensional Heisenberg Lie group . We investigate a special timelike surfaces in Anti de Sitter 3-space.We call such a timelike surface an Anti de Sitter horospherical flat surface which belongs to a class of surfaces given by one parameter families of Anti de Sitter horocycle.We give a generic classification of singularities and study the geometric properties of such surfaces from the viewpoint of Legendrian singularity theory.  相似文献

In this study, by using the concepts and results on spherical curves in dual Lorentzian space, we give the criterions for ruled surfaces with non‐lightlike ruling to be closed (periodic). We give a Lorentzian metric on the null congruence associated with a timelike conformal vector field. A Liouville type theorem is proved and a boundedness for the volume of the null congruence, analogous to a well-known Berger-Green theorem in the Riemannian case, will be derived by studying conjugate points along null geodesics. As a consequence, several classification results on certain compact Lorentzian manifolds without conjugate points on its null geodesics are obtained. Finally, several properties of null geodesics of a natural Lorentzian metric on each odd-dimensional sphere have been found.

A characterization of time functions on a spacetime is made by using theMöbius equation. It is shown that a time function characterized in this wayyields past timelike geodesic incompleteness and local Lorentzian warpedproduct decomposition of spacetime, provided that the stress-energy tensoris a fluid. Also, by imposing additional assumptions on the stress-energytensor and global analytic structure of the spacetime, more restrictivedecompositions closer to Robertson–Walker spacetimes are obtained.  相似文献

Let be a Riemannian manifold with the Jacobi operator, which has constant eigenvalues, independent on the unit vector and the point . Osserman conjectured that these manifolds are flat or rank-one locally symmetric spaces (). It is known that for a general pseudo-Riemannian manifold, the Osserman-type conjecture is not true and 4-dimensional Kleinian Jordan-Osserman manifolds are curvature homogeneous. We show that the length of the first covariant derivative of the curvature tensor is isotropic, i.e. . For known examples of 4-dimensional Osserman manifolds of signature we check also that . By the presentation of a class of examples we show that curvature homogeneity and do not imply local homogeneity; in contrast to the situation in the Riemannian geometry, where it is unknown if the Osserman condition implies local homogeneity.

We investigate two-dimensional timelike surfaces in a Lorentz manifold (X,g). It is shown that orientable surfaces with two spacelike boundary components (homeomorphic toS 1) are necessarily of topological type [0,1] x S1. We treat the initial value problem of a string (known from physics) as a purely geometric problem: Find a minimal surface which is specified by an initial curve and by a distribution of timelike tangent planes along . We prove the local existence and uniqueness of and also obtain global existence for special types (X,g). Global existence does not generally hold; we give a counter-example, which can be interpreted as a string collapsing into a black hole.  相似文献

We study complete noncompact spacelike hypersurfaces immersed into conformally stationary spacetimes, that is, Lorentzian manifolds endowed with a timelike conformal vector field V. In this setting, by using as main analytical tool a suitable maximum principle for complete noncompact Riemannian manifolds, we establish new characterizations of totally umbilical hypersurfaces in terms of their higher order mean curvatures. For instance, supposing an appropriated restriction on the norm of the tangential component of the vector field V, we are able to show that such hypersurfaces must be totally umbilical provided that either some of their higher order mean curvatures are linearly related or one of them is constant. Applications to the so‐called generalized Robertson‐Walker spacetimes are given. In particular, we extend to the Lorentzian context a classical result due to Jellett  29 .  相似文献

An estimator of the number of components of a finite mixture ofk-dimensional distributions is given on the basis of a one-dimensional independent random sample obtained by a transformation of ak-dimensional independent random sample. N/Kbe a Galois extension of number fields with finite Galois group G.We describe a new approach for constructing invariants of the G-module structure of the K groups of the ring of integers of N in the Grothendieck group of finitely generated projective Z[G]modules.
