Electro-Optic Intensity Modulator for Broadband Optical Communications   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
An LiNbO 3 electro-optic grating modulator, composed of coplanar microstrip electrodes with periodic small fins and an airbridge structure, is presented. The small fins slow down the microwave propagating speed, while the effect of the airbridge is the reduction of the effective index. The modulator design has good performance in terms of wavelength selection and high-speed characteristics. The microwave and optical analysis are carried out using the three-dimensional finite difference method and coupled mode equations.  相似文献

Hybrid electrode combined coplanar waveguide (CPW) and microstrip lines in ultra-broadband electro-optic modulators. The characteristics of the modulators with hybrid electrode is like that of the modulator with the microstrip lines, in which the microstrip electrode is loaded above only one arm of Mach-Zehnder (M-Z) optical waveguide, besides the problem of microstrip line to coaxial transition and corona polarization in polymer modulators have been best solved at the same time. By using finite element method (FEM), the characteristic parameters such as half-wave voltage, modulation bandwidth characteristic impedance, effective microwave refractive index of polymer modulators with microstrip line and hybrid electrode are analysed and compared in this paper. The results present that velocity match, impendence match and lower microwave propagating loss is easily realized in modulators with hybrid electrode.  相似文献

We propose and discuss terahertz(THz) electro-optic modulator induced by periodically patterned graphene microcavity. Due to the joint effect of graphene plasmon resonances and Fabry-Perot(F-P) oscillations, plasmon-induced transparency(PIT) effect is achieved and the operation frequency can be dynamically tuned by graphene Fermi energies and structural parameters. The results reveal that modulation depth(MD) larger than 80% is obtained across a wide frequency range from 4.2 THz to 9.4 THz, and the largest MD and Q factor reaches 95% and 15.8, respectively. In addition, operation frequency range and MD can also be tuned by optimizing the structure parameters. This investigation promises the development of high-performance widely tunable THz modulator in chip integrated photonic circuits.  相似文献

提出并设计了一种基于电光聚合物的锥形波导,可用于单模光纤与电光聚合物波导器件之间的连接.锥形波导中采用了宽度锥形和折射率锥形结构.宽度锥形采用劈形形状,通过宽度和折射率的缓慢变化实现模场转换.劈形形状的宽度锥形具有较小的损耗且易于制作,折射率锥形可采用灰度掩膜光刻技术制作.研究了锥形波导的传输损耗与锥形波导的长度、波导宽度和厚度、材料吸收损耗等参数的关系及其优化,分析了锥形波导中的功率传输、模场分布与模式转换效率.结果显示锥形波导的传输损耗小于0.37 dB,光纤-波导-光纤的连接损耗优于1.62 dB,对插入损耗的改善达到8.78 dB,模场转换效率达到了83.7%.  相似文献

设计了一种以聚合物作为材料的低损耗、宽带宽的Mach—Zehnder光波导调制器。分析了调制器的脊波导的模式特性,设计了脊波导的结构,并使用BPM软件模拟了脊形波导的光场分布;通过对光场分布的分析,优化了脊形波导的宽度Wg,脊高6,芯层高度H。同时对聚合物调制器的电极进行了优化,包括电极宽度W和电极间距D,使得调制器有较小的导体损耗以及较好的阻抗匹配。并结合了脊波导的结构参数和电极的优化参数,给出了优化结果,它能够使微波的有效折射率与光波的有效折射率达到匹配,从而使带宽达到177GHz,导体损耗为0.2569dB/cm·GHz1/2。  相似文献

对传统结构的LiNbO3电光调制器进行了改进,并用有限元法对改进后的电光调制器进行了分析计算,采用T形电极、脊波导和空气背槽的新型LiNbO3电光调制器在进行了结构尺寸优化后,相速完全匹配,带宽可达98 GHz,特性阻抗为52 Ω,损耗系数为0.464 dB/(cm·GHz1/2),半波电压为7.13 V,其性能远优于传统结构的调制器.  相似文献

Generally, the core is made up of EO materials in electro-optic waveguide polymer modulators and thus lightwave carrier is modulated in the core. In this case, the loss from chromophores is often large because the most of light power are confined to cores. In order to reduce the optical loss, we presented an approach that the lightwave was modulated only in claddings; that is to say, the EO polymer is only used in claddings and the core material is low-loss passive. Results indicate the propagation loss of this kind of modulator is about 1/3 of the former. Although the modal overlap integral between the microwave and the lightwave weakened under this condition, it could be improved by optimizing the dimension of waveguide. Due to the lower propagation loss, the interaction length of the modulator may be lengthened. Thus, the half-wave voltage can be decreased further. Also, some considerations on optimization design of this modulator are discussed. Especially, the effect of conductor loss and velocity mismatching should be taken into account in order to achieve the theoretical optimal half-wave voltage and the device bandwidth.  相似文献

Electro-optic (EO) polymer modulators are very promising in the realization of cost-effective and high-performance optical transmissions. In this article, general strategies and specific designs of the traveling wave electrodes in EO polymer modulators were presented to reduce the modulator drive power while maintaining a broadband response. The optimum device parameters and corresponding conditions were estimated using finite element method based on electrode design. In calculating the results, the comprehensive characteristics of polymer modulator with 1.21 V half-wave voltage and 91 GHz bandwidth was demonstrated with electro-optic interaction length is 20 mm, electro-optic coefficient is 55 pm/V, and operation wavelength is 1.319 μm. These results agree with the 0.8 V half-wave voltage and 30 mm electro-optic interaction length reported in Science. In the five designs presented, a hybrid electrode structure combining CPW and microstrip lines were advanced. The characteristics of this structure are like that of microstrip lines with a single-arm electrode on one arm of the waveguide, but it solves the problem of microstrip to coaxial line transition and corona polarization.  相似文献

Recent developments in electro-optic polymer materials and devices have led to new opportunities for integrated optic devices in numerous applications. The results of numerous tests have indicated that polymer materials have many properties that are suitable for use in high-speed communications systems, various sensor systems, and space applications. These results, coupled with recent advances in device and material technology, will allow very large bandwidth modulators and switches with low drive voltages, improved loss, long-term stability, and integration with other microelectronic devices such as MEMS. Low drive voltage devices are very important for space applications where power consumption scales as the square of the modulator half-wave voltage. In addition, we have demonstrated novel dual polymer modulators for mixing RF signals to produce sum and difference frequency modulation on an optical beam. This novel approach allows the suppression of the modulation at the two input RF signals, and only the mixing signals remain superposed on the optical beam. The dual modulator can be used for various encoding/decoding and frequency conversion schemes that are frequently used for both terrestrial and space communications. Another application of polymer integrated optics is in the field of optical sensing for high-frequency (GHz) electric fields.  相似文献

利用耦合模理论、电光调制理论和微环谐振理论,提出一个完善合理的聚合物微环电光开关的器件模型,并给出了可用以分析微环谐振过程的光强传递函数,据此在谐振波长1 550 nm下对该器件进行了模拟和优化.结果表明:微环波导芯截面尺寸为1.8×1.8 μm2,波导芯与电极间的限制层厚度为1.1 μm,电极厚度为0.15 μm,微环半径为15.2 μm,微环与信道间的耦合间距为0.16 μm,光绕微环转300 圈即可形成稳定的谐振状态,此时的谐振时间约为147.4 ps.不加电压时,下信道的插入损耗约为0.8 dB,上信道的串扰约为-26 dB;当取工作电压等于19.7 V为开关电压时,上信道的插入损耗约为0.34 dB,下信道的串扰约为-20 dB.  相似文献

报道用不对称的法布里-珀罗(AFP)多光束干涉膜测量极化聚合物的线性电光效应。将聚合物在有高反射膜的载体上旋涂成膜后进行电晕极化,利用聚合物自身的反射率和高反射膜构成不对称的法布里-珀罗膜,用这种聚合物电光薄膜的自由放置方法和反射式光路构造电光检测系统,测量了铟锡氧化物共同波导上的电信号,并对系统的工作原理进行了理论分析。结果表明,不对称的法布里-珀罗薄膜具有线性电光效应,在1kHz正弦波时系统得到了5mV/√Hz的电压灵敏度。  相似文献

应用耦合模理论、电光调制理论、保角变换法和镜像法,给出了分析聚合物定向耦合电光歼关高频响应特性的功率传输矩阵新方法,导出了输出功率、上升时间、下降时间、开关时间及截止开关频率的表达式.为了获得较低的传输损耗、较好的阻抗匹配、较小的开关电压以及较高的截止频率,优化设计了器件的波导结构和电极结构.模拟结果表明,所设计器件的开关电压为1.457 V,耦合长度为4.374 mm,开关时间为32.8 ps,截止开关频率为114.7 GHz.与点匹配法的计算结果和实验结果的对比表明,该理论分析方法具有较高的精度.  相似文献
