We present photofragment imaging experiments to characterize potential photolytic precursors of three C4H7 radical isomers: 1-methylallyl, cyclopropylmethyl, and 3-buten-1-yl radicals. The experiments use 2+1 resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI) with velocity map imaging to state-selectively detect the Br(2P(3/2)) and Br(2P(1/2)) atoms as a function of their recoil velocity imparted upon photodissociation of 1-bromo-2-butene, cyclopropylmethyl bromide, and 4-bromo-1-butene at 234 nm as well as the angular distributions of the photofragments. Energy and momentum conservation allows the internal energy distribution of the nascent momentum-matched radicals to be derived. The radicals are detected with single photon photoionization at 157 nm. In the case of the 1-methylallyl radical the photoionization cross section is expected to be independent of internal energy in the range of 7-30 kcal/mol. Thus, comparison of the product recoil kinetic energy distribution derived from the measurement of the 1-methylallyl velocity distribution, detecting the radicals with 157 nm photoionization, with a linear combination of the Br atom recoil kinetic energy distributions allows us to derive reliable REMPI line strength ratios for the detection of Br atoms and to test the assumption that the photoionization cross section does not strongly depend on the internal energy of the radical. This line strength ratio is then used to determine the branching to the Br(2P(3/2)) and Br(2P(1/2)) product channels for the other two photolytic systems and to determine the internal energy distribution of their momentum-matched radicals. (We also revisit earlier work on the photodissociation of cyclobutyl bromide which detected the Br atoms and momentum-matched cyclobutyl radicals.) This allows us to test whether the 157 nm photoionization of these radicals is insensitive to internal energy for the distribution of total internal (vibrational+rotational) energy produced. We find that 157 nm photoionization of cyclopropylmethyl radicals is relatively insensitive to internal energy, while 3-buten-1-yl radicals show a photoionization cross section that is markedly dependent on internal energy with the lowest internal energy radicals not efficiently detected by photoionization at 157 nm. We present electronic structure calculations of the radicals and their cations to understand the experimental results.  相似文献

Velocity map imaging was used to study the 193 nm photodissociation of propargyl bromide C(3)H(3)Br as well as the photoionization dynamics of the resulting propargyl radical C(3)H(3). Images were recorded by using single-photon vacuum ultraviolet ionization of the propargyl radical and by using two-photon resonant, three-photon ionization of the ground state Br((2)P(32)) and spin-orbit excited Br(*)((2)P(12)) atoms. Analysis of these data allowed the determination of the branching ratio Br:Br(*) as well as the photofragment angular distributions. Images of C(3)H(3) produced by the photodissociation of both C(3)H(3)Br and C(3)H(3)Cl were recorded at several energies between 8.97 and 9.12 eV, as well as at 9.86 eV, and showed no obvious internal energy dependence of the relative photoionization cross sections.  相似文献

Photoionization efficiency curves were measured for gas-phase FeO and CuO using tunable vacuum-ultraviolet radiation at the Advanced Light Source. The molecules are prepared using laser ablation of a metal-oxide powder in a novel high-repetition-rate source and are thermally moderated in a supersonic expansion. These measurements provide the first directly measured ionization energy for CuO, IE(CuO)=9.41 +/- 0.01 eV. The direct measurement also gives a greatly improved ionization energy for FeO, IE(FeO) = 8.56 +/- 0.01 eV. The ionization energy connects the dissociation energies of the neutral and cation, leading to a refined bond strength for the FeO cation: D0(Fe(+)-O)=3.52 +/- 0.02 eV. A dramatic increase in the photoionization cross section at energies of 0.36 eV above the threshold ionization energy is assigned to autoionization and direct ionization involving one or more low-lying quartet states of FeO+. The interaction between the sextet ground state and low-lying quartet states of FeO+ is key to understanding the oxidation of hydrogen and methane by FeO+, and these experiments provide the first experimental observation of the low-lying quartet states of FeO+.  相似文献

The photoionization of 1-alkenylperoxy radicals, which are peroxy radicals where the OO moiety is bonded to an sp2-hybridized carbon, is studied by experimental and computational methods and compared to the similar alkylperoxy systems. Quantum chemical calculations are presented for the ionization energy and cation stability of several alkenylperoxy radicals. Experimental measurements of 1-cyclopentenylperoxy (1-c-C5H7OO) and propargylperoxy (CH2=C=CHOO) photoionization are presented as examples. These radicals are produced by reaction of an excess of O2 with pulsed-photolytically produced alkenyl radicals. The kinetic behavior of the products confirms the formation of the alkenylperoxy radicals. Electronic structure calculations are employed to give structural parameters and energetics that are used in a Franck-Condon (FC) spectral simulation of the photoionization efficiency (PIE) curves. The calculations also serve to identify the isomeric species probed by the experiment. Adiabatic ionization energies (AIEs) of 1-c-C5H7OO (8.70 +/- 0.05 eV) and CH2=C=CHOO (9.32 +/- 0.05 eV) are derived from fits to the experimental PIE curves. From the fitted FC simulation superimposed on the experimental PIE curves, the splitting between the ground state singlet and excited triplet cation electronic states is also derived for 1-c-C5H7OO (0.76 +/- 0.05 eV) and CH2=C=CHOO (0.80 +/- 0.15 eV). The combination of the AIE(CH2=C=CHOO) and the propargyl heat of formation provides Delta f H(0)(o) (CH2=C=CHOO+) of (1162 +/- 8) kJ mol-1. From Delta f H(0)(o) (CH2=C=CHOO+) and Delta f H (0)(o) (C3H3+) it is also possible to extract the bond energy D(0)(o)(C3H3+-OO) of 19 kJ mol-1 (0.20 eV). Finally, from consideration of the relevant molecular orbitals, the ionization behavior of alkyl- and alkenylperoxy radicals can be generalized with a simple rule: Alkylperoxy radicals dissociatively ionize, with the exception of methylperoxy, whereas alkenylperoxy radicals have stable singlet ground electronic state cations.  相似文献

The dissociative photoionization of CH2Br2 in a region approximately 10-24 eV was investigated with photoionization mass spectroscopy using a synchrotron radiation source. An adiabatic ionization energy of 10.25 eV determined for CH2Br2 agrees satisfactorily with predictions of 10.26 and 10.25 eV with G2 and G3 methods, respectively. Observed major fragment ions CH2Br+, CHBr+, and CBr+ show appearance energies at 11.22, 12.59, and 15.42 eV, respectively; minor fragment ions CHBr2+, Br+, and CH2+ appear at 12.64, 15.31, and 16.80 eV, respectively. Energies for formation of observed fragment ions and their neutral counterparts upon ionization of CH2Br2 are computed with G2 and G3 methods. Dissociative photoionization channels associated with six observed fragment ions are proposed based on comparison of determined appearance energies and predicted energies. An upper limit of DeltaH0f,298(CHBr+) < or = 300.7 +/- 1.5 kcal mol(-1) is derived experimentally; the adiabatic ionization energy of CHBr is thus derived to be < or = 9.17 +/- 0.23 eV. Literature values for DeltaH0f,298(CBr+) = 362.5 kcal mol(-1) and ionization energy of 10.43 eV for CBr are revised to be less than 332 kcal mol(-1) and 9.11 eV, respectively. Also based on a new experimental ionization energy, DeltaH0f,298(CH2Br2+) is revised to be 236.4 +/- 1.5 kcal mol(-1).  相似文献

Photoionization cross sections of the phenyl radical to form the phenyl cation were measured using tunable vacuum ultraviolet synchrotron radiation coupled with photofragment translational spectroscopy. The phenyl radical was produced via 193- or 248-nm dissociation of chlorobenzene. At 10.0 eV, the photoionization cross sections for the phenyl radical averaged over product channels were found to be 13.4 +/- 2.0 and 13.2 +/- 2.0 Mb, respectively, with very little effect seen from the range of internal excitation produced at the two photolysis wavelengths. Using the photoionization cross section values for each channel, photoionization efficiency curves for the phenyl radical were placed on an absolute scale from 7.8 to 10.8 eV.  相似文献

A simple, new way to introduce fragile biomolecules into the gas phase via thermal vaporization of nanoparticles is described. The general utility of this technique for the study of biomolecules is demonstrated by coupling this source to tunable synchrotron vacuum ultraviolet radiation. Fragment-free photoionization mass spectra of tryptophan, phenylalanine-glycine-glycine, and beta-carotene are detected with signal-to-noise ratios exceeding 100. The 8.0 eV photoionization mass spectrum of tryptophan nanoparticles vaporized at 373 K is dominated by a single parent ion peak that exhibits a 20-fold enhancement over the methylene indole fragment ion. The degree of dissociative photoionization of tryptophan can be precisely controlled either by the thermal energy imparted into the neutral tryptophan molecule or by the energy of the ionizing photon. The results reveal how approximately 0.5 eV changes in internal energy affect both the photoionization mass spectrum of tryptophan and the appearance energy of the daughter ion fragments. This method allows the ionization energies of glycine (9.3 +/- 0.1 eV), tryptophan (7.3 +/- 0.2 eV), phenylalanine (8.6 +/- 0.1 eV), phenylalanine-glycine-glycine (9.1 +/- 0.1 eV), and beta-carotene (<7.0 eV) molecules to be determined directly from the photoionization efficiency spectra.  相似文献

Using photofragment translational spectroscopy and tunable vacuum-ultraviolet ionization, we measured the time-of-flight spectra of fragments upon photodissociation of vinyl fluoride (CH2CHF) at 157 and 193 nm. Four primary dissociation pathways--elimination of atomic F, atomic H, molecular HF, and molecular H2--are identified at 157 nm. Dissociation to C2H3 + F is first observed in the present work. Decomposition of internally hot C2H3 and C2H2F occurs spontaneously. The barrier heights of CH2CH --> CHCH + H and cis-CHCHF --> CHCH + F are evaluated to be 40+/-2 and 44+/-2 kcal mol(-1), respectively. The photoionization yield spectra indicate that the C2H3 and C2H2F radicals have ionization energies of 8.4+/-0.1 and 8.8+/-0.1 eV, respectively. Universal detection of photoproducts allowed us to determine the total branching ratios, distributions of kinetic energy, average kinetic energies, and fractions of translational energy release for all dissociation pathways of vinyl fluoride. In contrast, on optical excitation at 193 nm the C2H2 + HF channel dominates whereas the C2H3 + F channel is inactive. This reaction C2H3F --> C2H2 + HF occurs on the ground surface of potential energy after excitation at both wavelengths of 193 and 157 nm, indicating that internal conversion from the photoexcited state to the electronic ground state of vinyl fluoride is efficient. We computed the electronic energies of products and the ionization energies of fluorovinyl radicals.  相似文献

The absolute photoionization cross section of C(2)H(5) has been measured at 10.54 eV using vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) laser photoionization. The C(2)H(5) radical was produced in situ using the rapid C(2)H(6) + F → C(2)H(5) + HF reaction. Its absolute photoionization cross section has been determined in two different ways: first using the C(2)H(5) + NO(2) → C(2)H(5)O + NO reaction in a fast flow reactor, and the known absolute photoionization cross section of NO. In a second experiment, it has been measured relative to the known absolute photoionization cross section of CH(3) as a reference by using the CH(4) + F → CH(3) + HF and C(2)H(6) + F → C(2)H(5) + HF reactions successively. Both methods gave similar results, the second one being more precise and yielding the value: σ(C(2)H(5))(ion) = (5.6 ± 1.4) Mb at 10.54 eV. This value is used to calibrate on an absolute scale the photoionization curve of C(2)H(5) produced in a pyrolytic source from the C(2)H(5)NO(2) precursor, and ionized by the VUV beam of the DESIRS beamline at SOLEIL synchrotron facility. In this latter experiment, a recently developed ion imaging technique is used to discriminate the direct photoionization process from dissociative ionization contributions to the C(2)H(5)(+) signal. The imaging technique applied on the photoelectron signal also allows a slow photoelectron spectrum with a 40 meV resolution to be extracted, indicating that photoionization around the adiabatic ionization threshold involves a complex vibrational overlap between the neutral and cationic ground states, as was previously observed in the literature. Comparison with earlier photoionization studies, in particular with the photoionization yield recorded by Ruscic et al. is also discussed.  相似文献

The photoionization and photoelectron spectroscopy of pure He droplets were investigated at photon energies between 24.6 eV (the ionization energy of He) and 28.0 eV. Time-of-flight mass spectra and photoelectron images were obtained at a series of molecular beam source temperatures and pressures to assess the effect of droplet size on the photoionization dynamics. At source temperatures below 16 K, where there is significant production of clusters with more than 10(4) atoms, the photoelectron images are dominated by fast electrons produced via direct ionization, with a small contribution from very slow electrons with kinetic energies below 1 meV arising from an indirect mechanism. The fast photoelectrons from the droplets have as much as 0.5 eV more kinetic energy than those from atomic He at the same photon energy. This result is interpreted and simulated within the context of a "dimer model", in which one assumes vertical ionization from two nearest-neighbor He atoms to the attractive region of the He2+ potential energy curve. Possible mechanisms for the slow electrons, which were also seen at energies below IE(He), are discussed, including vibrational autoionizaton of Rydberg states comprising an electron weakly bound to the surface of a large HeN+ core.  相似文献

In this Article, we present mass-selected threshold photoelectron spectra of propargyl as well as the 1- and 3-bromopropargyl radicals. The reactive intermediates were produced by flash pyrolysis of suitable precursors and ionized by VUV synchrotron radiation. The TPES of the propargyl radical was simulated using data from a recent high-level computational study. An ionization energy (IE) of 8.71 ± 0.02 eV was obtained, in excellent agreement with computations, but slightly above previous experimental IEs. The pyrolysis of 1,3-dibromopropyne delivers both 1- and 3-bromopropargyl radicals that can be distinguished by their different ionization energies (8.34 and 8.16 eV). To explain the vibrational structure, a Franck-Condon simulation was performed, based on DFT calculations, which can account for all major spectral features. Bromopropargyl photoionizes dissociatively beginning at around 10.1 eV. Cationic excited states of 1- and 3-bromopropargyl were tentatively identified. The dissociative photoionization of the precursor (1,3-dibromopropyne) was also examined, delivering an AE(0K) (C(3)H(2)Br(+)/C(3)H(2)Br(2)) of 10.6 eV.  相似文献

The absolute total ionization cross sections from threshold to 250 eV and dissociative attachment cross sections from zero to 10 eV have been measured for the CCl2F2 (dichloro-difluoro-methane) molecule by using a parallel plate condenser type ionization chamber. The maximum of the ionization cross-section curve was found to be at an energy of about 90 eV with a cross section of 1.44 × 10?19 m2. The attachment cross-section curve shows three peaks, the most intense being at zero electron energy with a cross-section value of 1.80 × 10?20 m2, and the other two at energies of 0.6 eV and 3.5 eV, respectively. The maximal relative error in cross-section values is 0.08, for electron energies larger than 0.4 eV.  相似文献

The internal energy of thiophenol ions formed by moderate energy electron-impact ionization was measured as a function of the time after ionization using a visible laser probe. Immediately after ionization, it was found that about 60% of the ions had internal energies greater than 0.8 eV. At collisionless pressures, the ions were found to relax below 0.8 eV at a rate of 3 s−1. At higher pressure, where the collision rate is approximately 1 s−1, the relaxation rate was measured at 4.5 s−1. The results are compared with the energy deposition function inferred from the PES spectrum, and it is suggested that electron impact at 17 eV gives a somewhat smaller fraction of ions above 0.8 eV than does photoionization at 21 eV.  相似文献

Absolute dipole oscillator strengths (cross section) have been obtained for valence shell photoabsorption (7–100eV) and a variety of partial photoionization (11–40 eV) processes in gaseous HBr. Partial dipole oscillator strengths are reported for the formation of the X2Π, A2Σ+ and B2Σ electronic state of HBr+ as well as the respective photoelectron branching ratios. The photoelectron binding energy spectra show clear evidence of many-body effects in photoionization to the B2Σ state of HBr+ with the ionization oscillator strength divided over many bands as predicted by many-body Green's function calculations. Partial dipole oscillator strengths are also reported for molecular ion formation as well as for all dissociative ionization processes. The measurements have been made by the dipole (e,e) (e,2e) and (e,e + ion) methods, which respectively provide quantitative measurements of photoabsorption, photoelectron spectroscopy and photoionization mass spectrometry at continuously tuneable energies. The measurements of dipole oscillator strengths for production of electronic states of HBr+ are combined with those for molecular and dissociative photoionization. These, considered together with the ionization and appearance potentials, provide a quantitative dipole breakdown picture for the ionic photofragmentation pathways of HBr in the energy region up to 40 eV.  相似文献

We present absolute partial electron impact ionization cross sections for ethylene in the electron energy range between threshold and 1000 eV measured with a two sector field double focusing mass spectrometer. Ion kinetic energy distribution functions have been measured at all electron energies by applying a deflection field method. Multiplication of the measured relative cross sections by the appropriately determined discrimination factors lead to accurate relative partial cross sections. Normalization of the sum of the relative partial cross sections to an absolute total cross section gives absolute partial cross section values. The initial kinetic energy distributions of several fragment ions show the presence of two or more contributions that exhibit different electron energy dependencies. Differential cross sections with respect to the initial kinetic energy of the ions are provided and are related to specific ion production channels. The electron threshold energies for the direct and numerous other dissociative ionization channels are determined by quantum chemical calculation and these allow the determination of the total kinetic energy release and the electron energy loss for the most prominent dissociative ionization channels.  相似文献

Using a crossed laser-molecular beam scattering apparatus, these experiments photodissociate ethyl chloride at 193 nm and detect the Cl and ethyl products, resolved by their center-of-mass recoil velocities, with vacuum ultraviolet photoionization. The data determine the relative partial cross-sections for the photoionization of ethyl radicals to form C2H5+, C2H4+, and C2H3+ at 12.1 and 13.8 eV. The data also determine the internal energy distribution of the ethyl radical prior to photoionization, so we can assess the internal energy dependence of the photoionization cross-sections. The results show that the C2H4++H and C2H3++H2 dissociative photoionization cross-sections strongly depend on the photoionization energy. Calibrating the ethyl radical partial photoionization cross-sections relative to the bandwidth-averaged photoionization cross-section of Cl atoms near 13.8 eV allows us to use these data in conjunction with literature estimates of the Cl atom photoionization cross-sections to put the present bandwidth-averaged cross-sections on an absolute scale. The resulting bandwidth-averaged cross-section for the photoionization of ethyl radicals to C2H5+ near 13.8 eV is 8+/-2 Mb. Comparison of our 12.1 eV data with high-resolution ethyl radical photoionization spectra allows us to roughly put the high-resolution spectrum on the same absolute scale. Thus, one obtains the photoionization cross-section of ethyl radicals to C2H5+ from threshold to 12.1 eV. The data show that the onset of the C2H4++H dissociative photoionization channel is above 12.1 eV; this result offers a simple way to determine whether the signal observed in photoionization experiments on complex mixtures is due to ethyl radicals. We discuss an application of the results for resolving the product branching in the O+allyl bimolecular reaction.  相似文献

We report electron impact total cross sections, Q(T), for e-N(2)O scattering over an extensive range of impact energies approximately from 0.1 eV to 2000 eV. We employ an ab initio calculation using R-matrix formalism below the ionization threshold of the target and above it we use the well established spherical complex optical potential to compute the cross sections. Total cross section is obtained as a sum of total elastic and total electronic excitation cross sections below the ionization threshold and above the ionization threshold as a sum of total elastic and total inelastic cross sections. Ample cross section data for e-N(2)O scattering are available at low impact energies and hence meaningful comparisons are made. Good agreement is observed with the available theoretical as well as experimental results over the entire energy range studied here.  相似文献

Time-of-flight mass spectrometry and two-dimensional coincidence techniques have been used to determine, for the first time, the relative precursor-specific partial ionization cross sections following electron-methane collisions. Precursor-specific partial ionization cross sections quantify the contribution of single, double, and higher levels of ionization to the partial ionization cross section for forming a specific ion (e.g. CH(+)) following electron ionization of methane. Cross sections are presented for the formation of H(+), H(2)(+), C(+), CH(+), CH(2)(+), and CH(3)(+), relative to CH(4)(+), at ionizing electron energies from 30 to 200 eV. We can also reduce our dataset to derive the relative partial ionization cross sections for the electron ionization of methane, for comparison with earlier measurements. These relative partial ionization cross sections are in good agreement with recent determinations. However, we find that there is significant disagreement between our partial ionization cross sections and those derived from earlier studies. Inspection of the values of our precursor-specific partial ionization cross sections shows that this disagreement is due to the inefficient collection of energetic fragment ions in the earlier work. Our coincidence experiments also show that the lower energy electronic states of CH(4)(2+) populated by electron double ionization of CH(4) at 55 eV are the same (ground (3)T(1), first excited (1)E(1)) as those populated by 40.8 eV photoionization. The (3)T(1) state dissociating to form CH(3)(+) + H(+) and CH(2)(+) + H(2)(+) and the (1)E(1) to form CH(2)(+) + H(+) and CH(+) + H(+). At this electron energy, we also observe population of the first excited triplet state of CH(4)(2+) ((3)T(2)) which dissociates to both CH(2)(+) + H(+) + H and CH(+) + H(+) + H(2).  相似文献

The yield curves for photoions from Ce@C(82) are measured by using synchrotron radiation in the photon energy range from 90 to 160 eV. Parent Ce@C(82) (z+) and fragment ions C(60) (z+) and C(70) (z+) are observed in a mass spectrum (z=1 and 2). The yield curves for doubly charged ionic species exhibit broad resonance in the photon energy region of from 120 to 140 eV which is ascribed to the 4d-->4f giant dipole resonance of the encapsulated Ce atom. The total photoabsorption cross section of Ce@C(82) was determined from partial photoionization cross sections for formation of the parent and fragment ions to be 5.3(-1.1) (+1.8) and 19.6(-3.9) (+6.5) Mb at photon energies of 110 and 130 eV, respectively.  相似文献
