The nonlinear interaction between the electron-positron pairs produced by an electromagnetic wave in plasma and the wave leads to damping of the wave, frequency upshift, change of polarization, and particle acceleration. Theoretical studies on intense laser radiation interacting with plasma reveal an induced nonlinear birefringence which turns out to be spontaneous Faraday rotation. Here, this rotation is called nonlinear Faraday rotation (NFR). The expressions for the nonlinear refractive indices of the laser fields are calculated both in relativistic and non-relativistic limits for a two-component plasma. The NFR angles due to nonlinear induced birefringence are derived in the absence of externally imposed magnetic fields. It is shown that, in the relativistic limit, the electron motion plays an important role in producing NFR and so in the generation of induced magnetic fields.  相似文献

In this work, we present numerical computation of anomalous absorption of a powerful electromagnetic wave incident normally, on an isothermal plasma with a linear density gradient. We consider first, the “intensity” dependence of anomalous absorption treating two important cases: one that of a typical high temperature, high density fusion plasma occurring in a laser-pellet application and the other that of an ionospheric (F-layer) plasma. It is found that for low incident powers, reflection is almost constant, corresponding essentially, to classical electronion collisions. As we increase the incident power, however, we find that the reflection starts dropping and the absorption takes over. This result is interpreted in terms of the instability generated anomalous absorption of the incident wave. Next, we consider the “wavelength” dependence of anomalous absorption, wherein we observe that the effect of anomalous absorption is increasing for longer wavelengths of the incident laser radiation.  相似文献

Plasma-field structures that arise under the interaction between a relativistically strong electromagnetic wave and a layer of overdense plasma are considered within a quasistationary approximation. It is shown that, together with known solutions, which are nonlinear generalizations of skin-layer solutions, multilayer structures containing cavitation regions with completely removed electrons (ion layers) can be excited when the amplitude of the incident field exceeds a certain threshold value. Under symmetric irradiation, these cavitation regions, which play the role of self-consistent resonators, may amplify the field and accumulate electromagnetic energy.  相似文献

The paper considers the action of an external radiation field with arbitrary spectral composition on an electron moving in the field of a monochromatic plane electromagnetic wave (the first wave). The problem is studied of the change in the average energy of a relativistic electron as a result of its interaction with the radiation field. Instability of the propagation of nonlinear nonmonochromatic relativistic-intensity electromagnetic waves in a cold subcritical-density plasma is analyzed in three-dimensional geometry. Angular diagrams of their scattering are presented. The calculations show that forward and backward scattering may occur. The radiation in a specific direction is a set of harmonics, propagating against a continuum background, whose frequencies depend on the angle. Simple analytical expressions are obtained for the energy and angular distributions of outgoing electrons in ionization of a molecular hydrogen ion by a strong low-frequency electromagnetic field as well as for the ionization probabilities per unit time. The cases of linear and circular polarization of the laser radiation are studied. It is shown that in contrast to the case of the ionization of atoms oscillations appear in the energy spectra of the photoelectrons as a function of their kinetic energy. The well-known limits for the tunneling ionization probabilities for the hydrogen atom by a strong low-frequency alternating field are obtained in the case of large internuclear separations. We study transformation of a nonlinear plasma wave into electromagnetic radiation in the periodic static magnetic field of an undulator. Such a wave can be excited by a short laser pulse or a relativistic electron bunch. The features of relativistic upper-hybrid plasma oscillations are analyzed. In the approximation of constant pump, resonance conditions of excitation of an electromagnetic wave and the characteristic transformation length are found. The nonlinear stage of transformation with allowance for pump depletion is considered. Exact expressions are derived for the gain of a free-electron laser based on a uniform longitudinal magnetic field configuration operating in the single-particle, low-gain regime. The gain is calculated for different parameters of the system. For strong enough a field, the gain decreases with an increase of the amplitude, becoming negative when passing a threshold value, which depends on the system parameters.
