Letp > q > 1 be two coprime integers. In this paper, we prove several results about subsets of the interval [0, 1) which does or does not contain all the fractional parts {ξ (p /q)n }, n = 0, 1, 2, …, for certain non‐zero real number ξ. We show, for instance, that there are no real ξ for which the union of two intervals [8/39, 18/39] ∪ [21/39, 31/39] contains the set {ξ (3/2)n }, n ∈ N . The most important aspect of this result is that the total length of both intervals 20/39 is greater than 1/2: the same result as above for [0, 1/2) would imply that there are no Mahler's Z ‐numbers which the best known unsolved problem in this area. On the other hand, it is shown that there are infinitely many ξ for which {ξ (3/2)n } ∈ (5/48, 43/48) for each integer n ≥ 0. We also give simpler proofs of few recent results in this area. In this paper, a logistic equation with multiple piecewise constant arguments is investigated in detail. We generalize the approach in two papers, [K. Uesugi, Y. Muroya, E. Ishiwata, On the global attractivity for a logistic equation with piecewise constant arguments, J. Math. Anal. Appl. 294 (2) (2004) 560-580] and [Y. Muroya, E. Ishiwata, N. Guglielmi, Global stability for nonlinear difference equations with variable coefficients, J. Math. Anal. Appl. 334 (1) (2007) 232-247], and establish a new condition for the global stability of the equation. Their results are given as one of the special cases. Moreover, we improve the 3/2 type stability condition under several dominance assumptions on the coefficients of the equation. Some examples and numerical simulations are also presented. All of these examples show that there are several conditions for the global stability of the equation, depending on the coefficients on the delay terms of the equation, beyond the 3/2 type stability condition.  相似文献

In an earlier paper, formulae for det A as a ratio of products of principal minors of A were exhibited, for any given symmetric zero-pattern of A−1. These formulae may be presented in terms of a spanning tree of the intersection graph of certain index sets associated with the zero pattern of A−1. However, just as the determinant of a diagonal and of a triangular matrix are both the product of the diagonal entries, the symmetry of the zero pattern is not essential for these formulae. We describe here how analogous formulae for det A may be obtained in the asymmetric-zero-pattern case by introducing a directed spanning tree. We also examine the converse question of determining all possible zero patterns of A−1 which guarantee that a certain determinantal formula holds.  相似文献

In this paper we consider the estimation problem on independent and identically distributed observations from a location parameter family generated by a density which is positive and symmetric on a finite interval, with a jump and a nonnegative right differential coefficient at the left endpoit. It is shown that the maximum probability estimator (MPE) is 3/2th order two-sided asymptotically efficient at a point in the sense that it has the most concentration probability around the true parameter at the point in the class of 3/2th order asymptotically median unbiased (AMU) estimators only when the right differential coefficient vanishes at the left endpoint. The second order upper bound for the concentration probability of second order AMU estimators is also given. Further, it is shown that the MPE is second order two-sided asymptotically efficient at a point in the above case only.Research supported by University of Tsukuba Project Research.  相似文献

The aim of the paper is to provide the mathematical foundation of effective numerical algorithms for the optimal design of periodic binary gratings. Special attention is paid to reliable methods for the computation of diffraction efficiencies and of the gradients of certain functionals with respect to the parameters of the non-smooth grating profile. The methods are based on a generalized finite element discretization of strongly elliptic variational formulations of quasi-periodic transmission problems for the Helmholtz equation in a bounded domain coupled with boundary integral representations in the exterior. We prove uniqueness and existence results for quite general situations and analyse the convergence of the numerical solutions. Furthermore, explicit formulas for the partial derivatives of the reflection and transmission coefficients with respect to the parameters of a binary grating profile are derived. Finally, we briefly discuss the implementation of the generalized finite element method for solving direct and adjoint diffraction problems and present some numerical results. © 1998 B. G. This is the first of a planned sequence of papers on inverse problems for canonical systems of differential equations. It is devoted largely to foundational material (much of which is of independent interest) on the theory of assorted classes of meromorphic matrix valued functions. Particular attention is paid to the structure of J-inner functions and connections with bitangential interpolation problems and reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces. Some new characterizations of regular, singular and strongly regular J-inner functions in terms of the associated reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces are presented.D. Z. This is the third in a series of three papers on nonparametric density estimation for randomly perturbed elliptic problems. In the previous papers by Estep, M?lqvist, and Tavener (SIAM J. Sci. Comput. 31:2935?C2959,?2009; Int. J. Numer. Methods Eng. 80:846?C867,?2009), we derive an a posteriori error estimate for a computed probability distribution and an efficient adaptive algorithm for propagation of uncertainty into a quantity of interest computed from numerical solutions of an elliptic partial differential equation. We also test the algorithm on various problems including an example relevant to oil reservoir simulation. In this paper, we derive a convergence result for the method based on the assumption that the underlying domain decomposition algorithm converges geometrically. The main ideas of the proof can be applied to a large class of domain decomposition algorithms. We also present several generalizations of the method and an analysis of the computational cost.  相似文献

Asymptotic expansions for the error in some spline interpolation schemes are used to derive asymptotic expansions for the truncation errors in some spline-collocation methods for two-point boundary-value problems. This raises the possibility of using Richardson extrapolation or iterated deferred corrections to develop efficient high-order algorithms based on low-order collocation in analogy with similar codes based on low-order finite difference methods; some specific such procedures are proposed.This research was supported in part by the United States Office of Naval Research under Contract N00014-67-A-0126-0015.  相似文献
