Gold nanoparticles have strong and tunable absorption peaks in their optical extinction spectra, a phenomenon that has recently been exploited to generate localized heating in the vicinity of these particles. However the optimum particle geometry and illumination regime to maximize these effects appears not to have been previously examined in any detail. Here we show that the interplay between the particles' absorption cross-sections, volume, and surface area lead to there being specific conditions that can maximize particle temperature and surface heat flux. Optical absorption efficiencies were calculated from the formulation of Mie, and radiative, convective, and conductive heat transfer models were used to model the thermal performance of particles in different situations. Two technologically relevant scenarios for illumination, namely, irradiation by sunlight at 800 W/m2 and by a monochromatic laser source of 50 kW/m2 tuned to the peak absorption wavelength, were considered. For irradiation by sunlight, the resultant heat flux is optimized for an 80 nm diameter nanoshell with an aspect ratio of 0.8, while for irradiation by laser the maximum heat flux is found for 50 nm nanoshells, with an aspect ratio of 0.9.  相似文献

Anisotropic gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have attracted the interest of scientists for over a century, but research in this field has considerably accelerated since 2000 with the synthesis of numerous 1D, 2D, and 3D shapes as well as hollow AuNP structures. The anisotropy of these nonspherical, hollow, and nanoshell AuNP structures is the source of the plasmon absorption in the visible region as well as in the near‐infrared (NIR) region. This NIR absorption is especially sensitive to the AuNP shape and medium and can be shifted towards the part of the NIR region in which living tissue shows minimum absorption. This has led to crucial applications in medical diagnostics and therapy (“theranostics”), especially with Au nanoshells, nanorods, hollow nanospheres, and nanocubes. In addition, Au nanowires (AuNWs) can be synthesized with longitudinal dimensions of several tens of micrometers and can serve as plasmon waveguides for sophisticated optical devices. The application of anisotropic AuNPs has rapidly spread to optical, biomedical, and catalytic areas. In this Review, a brief historical survey is given, followed by a summary of the synthetic modes, variety of shapes, applications, and toxicity issues of this fast‐growing class of nanomaterials.  相似文献

Plasmonic metal nanoparticles have great potential for chemical and biological sensor applications, due to their sensitive spectral response to the local environment of the nanoparticle surface and ease of monitoring the light signal due to their strong scattering or absorption. In this work, we investigated the dependence of the sensitivity of the surface plasmon resonance (frequency and bandwidth) response to changes in their surrounding environment and the relative contribution of optical scattering to the total extinction, on the size and shape of nanorods and the type of metal, that is, Au vs Ag. Theoretical consideration on the surface plasmon resonance condition revealed that the spectral sensitivity, defined as the relative shift in resonance wavelength with respect to the refractive index change of surrounding materials, has two controlling factors: first the bulk plasma wavelength, a property dependent on the metal type, and second on the aspect ratio of the nanorods which is a geometrical parameter. It is found that the sensitivity is linearly proportional to both these factors. To quantitatively examine the dependence of the spectral sensitivity on the nanorod metal composition and the aspect ratio, the discrete dipole approximation method was used for the calculation of optical spectra of Ag-Au alloy metal nanorods as a function of Ag concentration. It is observed that the sensitivity does not depend on the type of the metal but depends largely on the aspect ratio of nanorods. The direct dependence of the sensitivity on the aspect ratio becomes more prominent as the size of nanorods becomes larger. However, the use of larger nanoparticles may induce an excessive broadening of the resonance spectrum due to an increase in the contribution of multipolar excitations. This restricts the sensing resolution. The insensitivity of the plasmon response to the metal composition is attributable to the fact that the bulk plasma frequency of the metal, which determines the spectral dispersion of the real dielectric function of metals and the surface plasmon resonance condition, has a similar value for the noble metals. On the other hand, nanorods with higher Ag concentration show a great enhancement in magnitude and sharpness of the plasmon resonance band, which gives better sensing resolution despite similar plasmon response. Furthermore, Ag nanorods have an additional advantage as better scatterers compared with Au nanorods of the same size.  相似文献

A method is presented for synthesizing core-shell structures consisting of monodisperse polystyrene latex nanospheres as cores and gold nanoparticles as shells. Use of polystyrene spheres as the core in these structures is advantageous because they are readily available commercially in a wide range of sizes, and with dyes or other molecules doped into them. Gold nanoparticles, ranging in size from 1 to 20 nm, are prepared by reduction of a gold precursor with sodium citrate or tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium chloride (THPC). Carboxylate-terminated polystyrene spheres are functionalized with 2-aminoethanethiol hydrochloride (AET), which forms a peptide bond with carboxylic acid groups on their surface, resulting in a thiol-terminated surface. Gold nanoparticles then bind to the thiol groups to provide up to about 50% coverage of the surface. These nanoparticles serve as seeds for growth of a continuous gold shell by reduction of additional gold precursor. The shell thickness and roughness can be controlled by the size of the nanoparticle seeds as well as by the process of their growth into a continuous shell. By variation of the relative sizes of the latex core and the thickness of the gold overlayer, the plasmon resonance of the nanoshell can be tuned to specific wavelengths across the visible and infrared range of the electromagnetic spectrum, for applications ranging from the construction of photonic crystals to biophotonics. The position and width of the plasmon resonance extinction peak are well-predicted by extended Mie scattering theory.  相似文献

Gold nanoparticles have shown potential in photothermal cancer therapy and optoelectronic technology. In both applications, a call for small size nanorods is warranted. In the present work, a one-pot seedless synthetic technique has been developed to prepare relatively small monodisperse gold nanorods with average dimensions (length × width) of 18 × 4.5 nm, 25 × 5 nm, 15 × 4.5 nm, and 10 × 2.5 nm. In this method, the pH was found to play a crucial role in the monodispersity of the nanorods when the NaBH(4) concentration of the growth solution was adjusted to control the reduction rate of the gold ions. At the optimized pH and NaBH(4) concentrations, smaller gold nanorods were produced by adjusting the CTAB concentration in the growth solution. In addition, the concentration of silver ions in the growth solution was found to be pivotal in controlling the aspect ratio of the nanorods. The extinction coefficient values for the small gold nanorods synthesized with three different aspect ratios were estimated using the absorption spectra, size distributions, and the atomic spectroscopic analysis data. The previously accepted relationships between the extinction coefficient or the longitudinal band wavelength values and the nanorods' aspect ratios found for the large nanorods do not extend to the small size domain reported in the present work. The failure of extending these relationships over larger sizes is a result of the interaction of light with the large rods giving an extinction band which results mostly from scattering processes while the extinction of the small nanorods results from absorption processes.  相似文献

Simple methods of preparing silver and gold nanoshells on the surfaces of monodispersed polystyrene microspheres of different sizes as well as of silver nanoshells on free-standing gold nanoparticles are presented. The plasmon resonance absorption spectra of these materials are presented and compared to predictions of extended Mie scattering theory. Both silver and gold nanoshells were grown on polystyrene microspheres with diameters ranging from 188 to 543 nm. The commercially available, initially carboxylate-terminated polystyrene spheres were reacted with 2-aminoethanethiol hydrochloride (AET) to yield thiol-terminated microspheres to which gold nanoparticles were then attached. Reduction of silver nitrate or gold hydroxide onto these gold-decorated microspheres resulted in increasing coverage of silver or gold on the polystyrene core. The nanoshells were characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and UV–vis spectroscopy. By varying the core size of the polystyrene particles and the amount of metal (silver or gold) reduced onto them, the surface plasmon resonance of the nanoshell could be tuned across the visible and the near-infrared regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. Necklace-like chain aggregate structures of gold core–silver shell nanoparticles were formed by reducing silver nitrate onto free citrate-gold nanoparticles. The plasmon resonance absorption of these nanoparticles could also be systematically tuned across the visible spectrum.  相似文献

This paper presents several solution-phase methods for the large-scale synthesis of metal nanoparticles with controllable compositions (e.g., spherical nanoparticles of gold/silver alloys), morphologies (e.g., nanospheres, triangular nanoplates, circular nanodisks, and nanocubes of silver), and structures (e.g., solid vs. hollow colloids). Spectral measurements indicated that the positions of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) bands for these nanoparticles could be tuned by varying all these parameters. The number of SPR peaks was found to increase as the symmetry of the nanoparticles decreased. In addition to their use as chromophores with strong extinction coefficients, these nanoparticles could serve as a platform to probe binding events of chemical and biochemical species on their surfaces. Gold nanoshells with hollow interiors were, in particular, shown to exhibit a much higher sensitivity to environmental changes than gold solid colloids with roughly the same size.  相似文献

The surface plasmon resonance peaks of gold nanostructures can be tuned from the visible to the near infrared region by controlling the shape and structure (solid vs. hollow). In this tutorial review we highlight this concept by comparing four typical examples: nanospheres, nanorods, nanoshells, and nanocages. A combination of this optical tunability with the inertness of gold makes gold nanostructures well suited for various biomedical applications.  相似文献

Besides conventional surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy, which all tend to have side-effects and damage normal tissues, new medical strategies, such as photothermal sensitization and photo-thermal ablation therapy (PTA) with near-IR laser light, have been explored for treating cancer. Much of the current excitement surrounding nanoscience is directly connected to the promise of new nanotechnology for cancer diagnosis and therapy. The basic principle behind PTA is that heat generated from light can be used to destroy cancer cells. Strong optical absorption and high efficiency of photothermal conversion at the cancer sites are critical to the success of PTA. Because of their unique optical properties, e.g., strong surface plasmon resonance (SPR) absorption, noble metal nanomaterials, such as gold and silver, have been found to significantly enhance photothermal conversion for PTA applications. Substantial effort has been made to develop metal nanostructures with optimal structural and photothermal properties. Ideal metal nanostructures should have strong and tunable SPR, be easy to deliver, have low toxicity, and be convenient for bioconjugation for actively targeting specific cancer cells. This review would highlight some gold nanostructures with various shapes and properties, including nanoparticles (NPs), nanorods (NRs), nanoshells, nanocages, and hollow nanospheres, which have been studied for PTA applications. Among these structures, hollow gold nanospheres (HGNs) exhibit arguably the best combined properties because of their small size (30―50 nm), spherical shape, and strong, narrow, and tunable SPR absorption.  相似文献

The current intense interest in the properties of plasmonic nanostructures for their applications in chemical and biochemical sensors, medical diagnostics and therapeutics, and biological imaging is fundamentally based on their enhanced optical absorption and scattering properties. In this study, the optical extinction, absorption, and scattering efficiencies were calculated as a function of shape definition, aspect ratio, surrounding medium, and material selection. The discrete dipole approximation method was used, which is known to be a very useful and versatile computational tool for particles with any arbitrary shape. Relative contribution of scattering to the total extinction for the longitudinal mode was found to be significantly dependent on the aspect ratio of the nanorod in a somewhat complex manner, different from a typical linear relationship for the resonance wavelength. A slight elongation of Au nanosphere gives rise to a drastic increase in the relative scattering efficiency, which eventually reaches a maximum and begins to decrease with further increase in the aspect ratio. This is ascribed to the increasing absorptive contribution from the larger imaginary dielectric function of the metal particle in the longer wavelength region where the red-shifted excitation of the longitudinal resonance mode occurs. For transverse mode exhibiting the blue-shift in the resonance peak, on the contrary, the absorption efficiency is relatively enhanced compared to the scattering efficiency with increasing aspect ratio. This is thought to result from the dominant effect of the interband transition present in this wavelength region. Besides the dependence of plasmonic characteristics on the aspect ratio of nanorod, the DDA results for a small change of the end-cap shape and the index of the surrounding medium lead us to conclude that there exist two competing key factors: a weighting factor assigned to the shape parameter and the dielectric function of the metal particle, which control the relative enhancement in the scattering and absorption as well as the linearity of resonance wavelength with regard to the aspect ratio.  相似文献

We report the preparation of a kind of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) tags and explore their applications in multifunctional optical imaging of cancer cells. The proposed nanoparticles (SERS tags) are prepared by connecting dye molecules directly onto the surfaces of gold nanorods through Au–S or Au–N interactions. The dye molecules are used as Raman reporters, while gold nanorods are used as enhanced materials due to their localized surface plasmon resonance effect. Multilayered polymers are further coated onto the surfaces of the nanoparticles to reach better stability and biocompatibility. Gold nanorods with different aspect ratios and different dye molecules conjugated are compared in order to achieve the diversity of SERS tags and find out the optimized condition of SERS tags with the highest signal intensity. Our experiments show that the resulting nanoparticles, which are uptaken by cancer cells, can provide not only dark field cells images but also multiplexing SERS images.  相似文献

The size and concentration of silica cores determine the size and concentration of silica/gold nanoshells in final preparations. Until now, the concentration of silica/gold nanoshells with Stober's silica core has been evaluated through the material balance assumption. Here, we describe a method for simultaneous determination of the average size and concentration of silica nanospheres from turbidity spectra measured within the 400-600 nm spectral band. As the refractive index of silica nanoparticles is the key input parameter for optical determination of their concentration, we propose an optical method and provide experimental data on a direct determination of the refractive index of silica particles n = 1.475 +/- 0.005. Finally, we exemplify our method by determining the particle size and concentration for 10 samples and compare the results with transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and dynamic light scattering data.  相似文献

Anisotropic metal nanoparticles: Synthesis, assembly, and optical applications   总被引:16,自引:0,他引:16
This feature article highlights work from the authors' laboratories on the synthesis, assembly, reactivity, and optical applications of metallic nanoparticles of nonspherical shape, especially nanorods. The synthesis is a seed-mediated growth procedure, in which metal salts are reduced initially with a strong reducing agent, in water, to produce approximately 4 nm seed particles. Subsequent reduction of more metal salt with a weak reducing agent, in the presence of structure-directing additives, leads to the controlled formation of nanorods of specified aspect ratio and can also yield other shapes of nanoparticles (stars, tetrapods, blocks, cubes, etc.). Variations in reaction conditions and crystallographic analysis of gold nanorods have led to insight into the growth mechanism of these materials. Assembly of nanorods can be driven by simple evaporation from solution or by rational design with molecular-scale connectors. Short nanorods appear to be more chemically reactive than long nanorods. Finally, optical applications in sensing and imaging, which take advantage of the visible light absorption and scattering properties of the nanorods, are discussed.  相似文献

The optical properties of metal nanoparticles are quite different from those of the bulk materials mainly due to the collective oscillations of their conduction electrons known as the surface plasmon resonance(SPR),which is strongly dependent on the particle shape and size, and the dielectric properties of the local environment where the nanoparticles are embedded in. Based on the discrete dipole approximation(DDA)method,we studied the optical properties of silver nanorods with different aspect ratios in some special dielectric environment including air, water, acetone, methylene chloride and pyridine. The DDA simulation of the ultraviolet-visible(UV-Vis)extinction spectra of silver nanorods with varying aspect ratios shows the plasmons absorption splits into two bands corresponding to the oscillation of the free electrons along and perpendicular to the long axis of the rods. The transverse mode shows almost a fixed resonance at about 350 nm while the resonance of the longitudinal mode is red-shifted and strongly depends on the aspect ratio of the nanorods. An empirical formula was given to predict the peak position of the longitudinal palsmon band of the silver nanorods with different aspect ratios in the air. The calculation result also shows the maximum of the longitudinal plasmon band of a silver nanorod with a fixed aspect ratio depends on the medium dielectric constant in a linear way. The TEM image and corresponding UV-Vis extinction spectrum of silver nanosphere and nanorods synthesized by our lab are in good agreement with the DDA simulation results.  相似文献

The shape anisotropy of nanorods gives rise to two distinct orientational modes by which nanorods can be assembled, i.e., end-to-end and side-by-side, analogous to the well-known H and J aggregation in organic chromophores. Optical absorption spectra of gold nanorods have earlier been observed to show a red-shift of the longitudinal plasmon band for the end-to-end linkage of nanorods, resulting from the plasmon coupling between neighboring nanoparticles, similar to the assembly of gold nanospheres. We observe, however, that side-by-side linkage of nanorods in solution shows a blue-shift of the longitudinal plasmon band and a red-shift of the transverse plasmon band. Optical spectra calculated using the discrete dipole approximation method were used to simulate plasmon coupling in assembled nanorod dimers. The longitudinal plasmon band is found to shift to lower energies for end-to-end assembly, but a shift to higher energies is found for the side-by-side orientation, in agreement with the optical absorption experiments. The strength of plasmon coupling was seen to increase with decreasing internanorod distance and an increase in the number of interacting nanorods. For both side-by-side and end-to-end assemblies, the strength of the longitudinal plasmon coupling increases with increasing nanorod aspect ratio as a result of the increasing dipole moment of the longitudinal plasmon. For both the side-by-side and end-to-end orientation, the simulation of a dimer of nanorods having dissimilar aspect ratios showed a longitudinal plasmon resonance with both a blue-shifted and a red-shifted component, as a result of symmetry breaking. A similar result is observed for a pair of similar aspect ratio nanorods assembled in a nonparallel orientation. The internanorod plasmon coupling scheme concluded from the experimental results and simulations is found to be qualitatively consistent with the molecular exciton coupling theory, which has been used to describe the optical spectra of H and J aggregates of organic molecules. The coupled nanorod plasmons are also suggested to be electromagnetic analogues of molecular orbitals. Investigation of the plasmon coupling in assembled nanorods is important for the characterization of optical excitations and plasmon propagation in these nanostructures. The surface plasmon resonance shift resulting from nanorod assembly also offers a promising alternative for analyte-sensing assays.  相似文献
