At volume fractions larger than 8.5%, aqueous suspensions of lath-like goethite (alpha-FeOOH) nanorods form a lyotropic nematic phase. In this article, we first discuss the nematic ordering within statistical-physics models of the isotropic/nematic phase transition. We then describe the influence of a magnetic field on the nematic phase. Because the nanorods bear permanent magnetic moments, the nematic suspensions have dipolar order and very low Frederiks thresholds. Moreover, the nematic phase aligns parallel to a small magnetic field but realigns perpendicular to a high field because of a competition between the permanent moments of the nanorods and their negative anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility. This magneto-optical study of the nematic phase is completely consistent with that of the isotropic phase of the same suspensions published in Part I (this issue, p. 291). Besides, we demonstrate the field-induced biaxiality of a nematic single domain aligned perpendicular to the field. We also describe here preliminary experiments where an a.c. electric field is applied to the nematic phase. Both field amplitude and frequency were found to control the alignment direction and homeotropic-to-planar alignment transitions were observed. From this data, simple models were used to estimate some physical constants of the nematic phase.  相似文献

铁基超导体中普遍存在着反铁磁、超导和向列相,因此研究向列相的性质及其与反铁磁、超导的关系对于理解铁基超导体的低能物理及高温超导电性具有非常重要的作用.所谓向列相是指电子态自发破缺了晶格的面内四重旋转对称性而形成的有序态,从而导致样品的某些物理性质出现了两重的各向异性.我们通过自主研发的单轴压强装置,可以在低温下原位改变压强,测量电阻的变化,从而得到向列极化率.本文介绍了我们利用该装置在最近几年研究铁基超导体的向列相和向列涨落所取得的一些成果,包括详细研究了BaFe_(2-x)Ni_xAs_2体系中的向列量子临界点及其量子临界涨落,并提出了基于向列涨落强弱调节的铁基超导体统一相图.这些结果表明,向列相及其涨落与反铁磁和超导均有很强的耦合,对于理解铁基超导体中磁性和超导电性非常关键.  相似文献

Deuterium NMR is used to examine the molecular order exhibited by an organosiloxane tetrapode giving the first experimental evidence, using a bulk sample, for the existence of a biaxial nematic phase in this type of compounds. The temperature dependence of the averaged quadrupolar coupling constant and asymmetry parameter was determined in the compound's nematic phase. Two distinct regimes could be identified, one with a vanishing asymmetry parameter corresponding to a uniaxial nematic phase and another with a significant temperature dependent asymmetry parameter, corresponding to a biaxial nematic phase. The high values obtained for the asymmetry parameter at the lower end of the nematic range are well above experimental error and constitute a definite proof of the biaxial nature of the nematic phase exhibited by the studied compound for those temperatures.  相似文献

We present a high-resolution study of the isotropic to nematic phase transition of a low birefringence liquid-crystal compound incorporating an aerosil gel. Calorimetry, light scattering, and microscopy data coherently combine to allow for an accurate determination of the temperature dependence of the onset of the nematic state. The nematic order develops on cooling through two distinct processes while the nematic correlation length mildly decreases. We understand the doubling of the phase transition as due to a crossover from a random-dilution regime, where the silica gel couples to the scalar part of the nematic order parameter, to a low-T random-field regime, where the coupling induces distortions in the director field.  相似文献

In this work, experimental birefringence data of several nematic liquid crystals, which share the presence of a nematic–isotropic and a nematic–crystalline phase transition, are used to show that the birefringence presents a universal behaviour which encompasses the entire range of the nematic phase. The meaning and consequences of such behaviour are discussed; as the order parameter is proportional to the birefringence, this result implies that the order parameter has an extended universal profile, similar to a corresponding state law, which is independent of the liquid crystal compound and becomes determined once the temperature interval of the existence of the nematic compounds is obtained.  相似文献

We report a combined theoretical and experimental study of linear viscoelastic response in oriented monodomain nematic elastomers. The model predicts a dramatic decrease in the dynamic modulus in certain deformation geometries in an elastic medium with an independently mobile internal degree of freedom, the nematic director with its own relaxation dynamics. Dynamic mechanical measurements on monodomain nematic elastomers confirm our predictions of dependence on shear geometry and on nematic order, and also show a very substantial mechanical loss clearly associated with director relaxation.  相似文献

We perform a variational Monte Carlo study of the nematic state in iron-pnictide superconductors within a realistic five-orbital model.Our numerical results show that the nematic state,formed by introducing an anisotropic hopping order into the projected wave function,is not stable unless the off-site Coulomb interaction V exceeds a critical value.This demonstrates that V plays a key role in forming the nematic state in iron-pnictide superconductors.In the nematic state,the orbital order and the anisotropic spin correlations are consistent with the experimental observations.We argue that the experimentally observed anisotropic magnetic couplings and structural transition are associated with the nematic state and can be understood in a unified framework.  相似文献

We investigate theoretically some phase transitions in liquid crystals in the presence of a laser beam. We found, in non-absorbing nematics, a laser-induced one-way transition from a paranematic to a nematic phase. In absorbing nematics we found, in addition to this transition, a one-way transition from a nematic to a paranematic phase with increasing laser intensity. Further, we found a reentrant nematic or a reentrant paranematic via paranematic or nematic phase respectively. In the case of smectic A, laser absorption results in a coupling between the positional and orientational orders. As a result, the smectic A to nematic transition can change from second order to first order and the smectic C to smectic A transition can become first-order in the field of a laser.  相似文献

In the mean field approximation, we evaluate the temperature dependence of the anchoring energy strength of a nematic liquid crystal in contact with a solid substrate due to thermal fluctuations. Our study is limited to the weak anchoring case, where the microscopic surface energy is small with respect to the mean field energy due to the nematic phase. We assume furthermore that the physical properties of the substrate can be considered temperature independent in the range of the nematic phase. According to the thermodynamical perturbative approach, the macroscopic surface energy is deduced by averaging the microscopic one, with a density matrix containing only the nematic mean field. We show that the thermal renormalization of the anchoring energy coefficients is proportional to the generalized nematic order parameters. Our analysis shows also that the thermal renormalization of the anchoring energy coefficients predicted by means of Landau-like theories is a first and rather rough approximation in the whole nematic temperature range.  相似文献

This brief report (i) presents equations that govern the balance of tangential forces in interfaces between isotropic viscous fluids and nematic liquid crystals, and (ii) establishes the physical origin of nematic Marangoni flows. It is shown that surface gradients in the orientation dependent surface free energy gives rise to tangential nematic Marangoni forces. Tangential nematic Marangoni forces are caused by surface gradients of the nematic tensor order parameter, and the kinetic coefficient characterizing this interfacial phenomenon is proportional to nematic elastic storage. Expressions of the Marangoni forces using a classical constitutive equation for the surface free energy are given for general and uniaxial nematic ordering states. Nematic Marangoni flows or nematocapillarity augments the class of Marangoni flows present in electrocapillarity, diffusocapillarity, and thermocapillarity.  相似文献

Molecular orientations and photorefractive effects of C60-doped nematic liquid crystals were investigated with layer-structured liquid crystal cells where a nematic phase was injected. Regardless of the surface treatments of the layers, liquid crystals injected with nematic phase showed a higher degree of director orientation and photorefractivity than those injected with an isotropic phase. The nematic alignment of liquid crystals in an untreated cell is generated by a capillary flow of liquid crystal during the nematic injection. However, it was observed that the grating formation was delayed a little longer with injection of nematic phase than with injection of isotropic phase. Two-dimensional topological defects, spin disclinations, exist for a magnet with spin 1 and strong biquadratic interaction, in which the spin nematic state is realized. The spin disclinations have a nonsingular macroscopic core with a saturated magnetic moment and destroyed nematic order. These singular lines have common features with disclinations in nematic liquid crystals, singular disclinations in antiferromagnets, and magnetic vortices. However, significant differences of their properties from the above-mentioned topological defects also exist. The dynamic properties of a disclination in the spin nematic are characterized by the “freezing in the condensate” and by the gyroscopic force.  相似文献

It is shown that the temperature dependence of the static transmission characteristics of twisted nematic displays can be influenced by adding cholesteric substances in small amounts to a nematic matrix. The 50%-transmission voltage of such a display was made nearly temperature independent. This procedure promises interesting applications for multiplexing twisted nematic displays.  相似文献

Nematic order and its fluctuations have been widely found in iron-based superconductors. Above the nematic order transition temperature, the resistivity shows a linear relationship with the uniaxial pressure or strain along the nematic direction and the normalized slope is thought to be associated with nematic susceptibility. Here we systematically studied the uniaxial pressure dependence of the resistivity in Sr_(1-x)Ba_xFe_(1.97)Ni_(0.03)As_2, where nonlinear behaviors are observed near the nematic transition temperature. We show that it can be well explained by the Landau theory for the second-order phase transitions considering that the external field is not zero. The effect of the coupling between the isotropic and nematic channels is shown to be negligible. Moreover, our results suggest that the nature of the magnetic and nematic transitions in Sr_(1-x)Ba_xFe_2As_2 is determined by the strength of the magnetic-elastic coupling.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Monte Carlo simulations in the isothermal-isobaric ensemble are used to investigate the formation of an ordered, biaxial nematic phase in a binary mixture of thermotropic liquid crystals. The orientational dependence of the interaction between molecules of each pure component is the same as in the well-known Maier-Saupe model; each pure component of the mixture is therefore capable of forming a uniaxial nematic phase. For the interaction between molecules of different components, we use the same Maier-Saupe model but change the sign of the coupling constant. As a consequence a T-shaped arrangement of these molecules is energetically favoured. The formation of the biaxial phase occurs in two steps. At higher temperatures T, one of the components forms a uniaxial nematic phase whereas the other is in a quasi two-dimensional restricted isotropic liquid state. We develop a simple theoretical model to understand the high degree of (ostensible) nematic order in the latter. At lower T, the second component becomes nematic and then the entire mixture of the two compounds has biaxial symmetry. The biaxial nematic phase does not demix into domains rich in molecules of one or the other species.  相似文献

In this paper, we discuss the equilibrium phases and collapse transitions of a lyotropic nematic gel immersed in an isotropic solvent. A nematic gel consists of a cross-linked polymer network with rod-like molecules embedded in it. Upon decreasing the quality of the solvent, we find that a lyotropic nematic gel undergoes a discontinuous volume change accompanied by an isotropic-nematic transition. We also present phase diagrams that these systems may exhibit. In particular, we show that coexistence of two isotropic phases, of two nematic phases, or of an isotropic and a nematic phase can occur. We study the kinetic pathways for the isotropic-to-nematic transition in a fluid of colloidal hard rods. In order to follow the formation of the nematic phase, we develop a new cluster criterion that distinguishes nematic clusters from the isotropic phase. Applying this criterion in Monte Carlo simulations, we find spinodal decomposition as well as nucleation and growth depending on the supersaturation. We determine the height of the nucleation barrier and we study the shape and structure of the cluster. More specifically, we find ellipsoidal nematic clusters with an aspect ratio of about 1.7 and a homogeneous nematic director field. Our results are consistent with theoretical predictions on the shape and director field of nematic tactoids. Classical nucleation theory gives reasonable predictions for the height of the nucleation barrier and the critical nucleus size.  相似文献

A detailed theoretical analysis of determining the sum of flexoelectric coefficients in nematic liquid crystals using the capacitance method is given. In the strong anchoring parallel aligned nematic (PAN) and hybrid aligned nematic (HAN) cells, the dependences of the capacitance on the sum of flexoelectric coefficients and the applied voltage are obtained by numerical simulations, and the distributions of the director and the electric potential for different applied voltages and flexoelectric coefficients are also given. Based on this theoretical analysis, we propose an experimental design for measuring the capacitance of a liquid crystal cell using the improved precision LCR meter E4980A (Agilent). Through comparing the experimental data with the simulated results, the sum of flexoeletric coefficients can be determined.  相似文献

Recently the authors have observed in compounds of the 4,n-alkyloxybenzoic acid series, with the homologous index n ranging from 6 to 9, a texture transition in the nematic range which subdivides the nematic phase in two sub-phases displaying different textures in polarised light analysis. To investigate a persistence of texture transitions in nematic phases, we prepared binary mixtures of 4,6-alkyloxybenzoic acid (6OBAC) with other members (7-, 8-, 9-, 12-, 16OBAC) of its homologous series. Binary mixtures exhibit a broadening in the temperature ranges of both smectic and nematic phases. A nematic temperature range of 75°C is observed. In the nematic phase, in spite of the microscopic disorder introduced by mixing two components, the polarised light optics analysis of the liquid crystal cells reveals a texture transition. In the case of the binary mixture of 6OBAC with 12OBAC and with 16OBAC, that is of compounds with monomers of rather different lengths, the texture transition temperature is not homogeneous in the cell, probably due to a local variation in the relative concentrations of compounds.  相似文献
