Surface modification of poly(tetrafluoroethylene) films by plasma polymerization and deposition of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) was carried out. The effects of glow‐discharge conditions on the chemical structure and composition of the deposited GMA polymer were analyzed by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. XPS and FTIR results revealed that the epoxide groups in the plasma‐polymerized GMA (pp‐GMA) layer had been preserved to various extents, depending on the plasma deposition conditions. The morphology of the modified PTFE surface was investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The pp‐GMA film with well‐preserved epoxide groups was used as an adhesion promotion layer to enhance the adhesion of the electrolessly deposited copper on the PTFE film. The T‐peel adhesion test results showed that the adhesion strength between the electrolessly deposited copper and the pp‐GMA‐modified PTFE (pp‐GMA‐PTFE) film was much higher than that between the electrolessly deposited copper and the pristine or the Ar plasma‐treated PTFE film. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The surface free energy of crosslinked photodefinable epoxy (PDE) was evaluated from the advancing contact angles measured by the sessile drop method. Poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) was used as a reference material in the evaluation of the surface free energies by various models. Pure water, diiodomethane, formamide, ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, glycerol, 1‐bromonaphthalene, decane, and tetradecane were used as the probing liquids. The surface free energies for PDE and PTFE were calculated to be 43.6 and 21.2 mJ/m2, respectively. The contact‐angle measurements indicated the isotropy of the PDE surface with respect to the surface free energy. The PDE coating was further characterized with scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. The PDE surface was treated chemically and by reactive ion etching (RIE) to determine their impact on the wettability and adhesion. The treatments resulted in decreased contact angles between the crosslinked PDE surface and water as the polarity of the surface increased from about 9% to 18 and 43% by the chemical and RIE treatments, respectively. On the contrary, the surface free energy of the treated PDEs, as calculated by the geometric mean model, did not change markedly (to 47.4 and 41.8 mJ/m2 by the chemical and RIE treatments, respectively). Consequently, the contact angles of diiodomethane and the PDE solution on the treated surfaces did not decrease noticeably. The stud‐pull test showed improved adhesion strength for PDE that was left less crosslinked and, therefore, had residual affinity against the sequential PDE layer. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Nylon‐6/glass‐fiber (GF)/liquid‐crystalline‐polymer (LCP) ternary blends with different viscosity ratios were prepared with three kinds of nylon‐6 with different viscosities as matrices. The rheological behaviors of these blends were characterized with capillary rheometry. The morphology was observed with scanning electron microscopy and polarizing optical microscopy. This study showed that although LCP did not fibrillate in binary nylon‐6/LCP blends, LCP fibrillated to a large aspect ratio in some ternary blends after GF was added. The addition of 5 wt % LCP significantly reduced the melt viscosity of nylon‐6/GF blends to such an extent that some nylon‐6/GF/LCP blends had quite low viscosities, not only lower than those of neat resins and nylon‐6/GF blends but also lower than those of corresponding nylon‐6/LCP blends. The mutual influence of the morphology and rheological properties was examined. The great reduction of the melt viscosity was considered the result of LCP fibrillation. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A hybrid composite consisting of rubber‐toughened nylon‐6,6, short glass fibers, and a thermotropic liquid‐crystalline polymers (LCP) was investigated by the LCP content being varied. The thermal behavior, morphology, and crystallization behavior due to hybridization were studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and wide‐angle X‐ray scattering (WAXS). DSC results indicated that the crystallinity of the glass‐fiber‐reinforced toughened nylon‐6,6 was reduced by LCP addition, particularly 5–10 wt % LCP. DMA data showed that the miscibility between the blended components was maximum at the 5 wt % LCP composition, and the miscibility decreased with increasing LCP content. SEM photomicrographs revealed information consistent with the thermal behavior on miscibility. It was also observed that the 10 wt % LCP composition showed predominantly an amorphous character with FTIR and WAXS. WAXS results indicated that LCP hybridization increased the interplanar spacing of the hydrogen‐bonded sheets of the nylon crystals rather than the spacing between the hydrogen‐bonded chains. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The influence of molecular weight and the amount of the poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) on the growth of poly(vinylpyrrolidone)–based films on copper surfaces was studied by electrochemical, infrared and electronic spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric methods. Complex polymer/metal ions were deposited onto a copper surface, as the result of the electrochemically generated reaction of copper cations with PVP and SCN?, in sulfuric acid media. Spontaneous film growth on copper surfaces was generated and characterized as a Cu(II)/PVP/SCN? complex. Infrared spectra and thermal gravimetric curves of the films generated at + 0.7 V were compared with the chemically synthesized complex, and show the same patterns. The oxidation process can be described as: Cu(0)→Cu(I) and Cu(I)→Cu(II), and the copper complex formed at more positive potentials was characterized as Cu(II)/PVP/SCN?, with copper bonded to the oxygen atom of PVP and thiocyanate ligand N‐linked. This study focuses on the complex formation on a copper surface in acid media and its characterization through electrochemical and spontaneously generated reactions. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This study investigated the dependence of the anticorrosion performance of a poly(γ‐glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane) (poly(γ‐GPTMS)) sol‐gel coating on AA2024‐T3 aluminum alloy surface state. Two different AA2024‐T3 surface pretreatment procedures were tested: a degreasing with acetone and a chemical multistep etching process (industrial chemical etching pretreatment). Poly(γ‐GPTMS) coatings were deposited onto both pretreated surfaces using the dip‐coating technique. Surfaces were characterized principally by scanning electron microscopy, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared attenuated total reflectance, contact angles, and roughness measurements. Moreover, for the coated AA2024‐T3 surfaces, a pull‐off test was used to evaluate the poly(γ‐GPTMS) adhesion to the pretreated surface. Bare surface properties depended on the applied pretreatment. The chemically etched surface was the roughest and the most concentrated in hydroxyl groups. In addition, comparatively to the degreased surface, it has a more hydrophobic character. Poly(γ‐GPTMS) coating revealed an uneven nature and a poor adhesion once it was deposited onto the degreased surface. Coatings anticorrosion performances were evaluated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements (EIS). Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy data proved that the sol‐gel coating applied onto the chemically etched surface had better anticorrosion performance.  相似文献

We covalently immobilized poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) chains onto a fluorinated ethylene propylene copolymer (FEP) surface. On the FEP surface, aldehyde groups were first deposited by plasma polymerization of acetaldehyde or acrolein. Then, amino‐PEO chains were immobilized through Schiff base formation, which was followed by reduction stabilization with sodium cyanoborohydride. The PEO‐grafted polymer surfaces thus prepared were characterized by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), atomic force microscopy, contact‐angle measurements, and protein adsorption. The dramatic increase in the C O intensity of the high‐resolution XPS C 1s spectrum, together with an overall increase in oxygen content, indicated the successful attachment of PEO chains onto the acetaldehyde plasma surfaces. The amount of grafted PEO chains depended on the superfacial density of the plasma‐generated aldehyde groups. The grafted monoamino‐PEO chains formed a brushlike structure on the polymer surface, whereas the bisamino‐PEO chains predominately adopted a looplike conformation. The PEO surface had a regular morphology with greater roughness than the aldehyde surface underneath. Surface hydrophilicity increased with the grafting of PEO. Also, the bisamino‐PEO‐grafted surface had slightly higher surface hydrophilicity than its monoamino‐PEO counterpart. These PEO coatings reduced fibrinogen adsorption by 43% compared with the substrate FEP surface. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci B: Polym Phys 38: 2323–2332, 2000  相似文献

The properties of surface‐ and bulk‐modified poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) were examined. Laser‐induced surface grafting of poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) on PDMS and a sequential method for preparation of interpenetrating polymer networks of PDMS/PHEMA were, respectively, used for surface and bulk modifications. The hydrogel content and water‐uptake capability of the modified samples were also investigated. The modified PDMS samples were examined by performing attenuated total reflection/Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, dynamic mechanical thermal analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and water contact‐angle measurements. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The nucleation and initial stages of growth of aluminium oxide deposited on two different polymer surfaces [poly(ethylene terephthalate), (PET) and amorphous polypropylene, (PP)] have been studied by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The permeation of water vapor and oxygen through the films has been measured. The initial stages of the growth of the oxide consisted of separated islands on the polymer surface. Further growth of oxide depends strongly on the surface morphology and chemical nature of the polymer surface. Growth on PET follows a layer‐by‐layer mechanism that maintains the native surface roughness of the polymer substrate. Growth on PP, however, follows an island mode, which leads to an increase in surface roughness. This may be due to a lack of chemical bonding between the polymer and the arriving metal–oxygen particles. The oxide layer on PET grows more densely than on PP, providing superior barrier to gas permeation. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci B: Polym Phys 38: 3151–3162, 2000  相似文献

Surface modification of argon‐plasma‐pretreated poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) film via UV‐induced graft copolymerization with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) was carried out first. Reactive adsorption of γ‐aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APS) onto the GMA graft‐copolymerized PTFE (GMA‐g‐PTFE) film surface was performed by the simple immersion of the film in the APS solution. The adsorption process was studied as a function of the APS concentration, the immersion time of the graft‐modified PTFE film in the APS solution, and the washing protocol. The chemical composition and morphology of the silane‐modified surfaces were characterized by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy, respectively. The performance of the silane‐modified PTFE surface in adhesion promotion was investigated. The T‐peel adhesion strength of the evaporated Cu on the PTFE film with the reactively adsorbed organosilane increased significantly to about 12.5 N/cm. This adhesion strength was more than twice that of the assembly involving evaporated Cu on the GMA‐g‐PTFE film and about 10 times that of the assembly involving evaporated Cu on the Ar‐plasma‐treated PTFE film. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Improvement of primer adhesion to thermoplastic olefins (TPOs) by methane plasma polymerization with a low‐temperature cascade arc discharge was investigated. Methane plasma with a low‐temperature cascade arc plasma torch can be used for improving the primer adhesion to TPOs. Tape‐adhesion tests (ASTM 3359‐92a method) demonstrated this improvement, with a rating of 0 for untreated TPOs and 5 for methane plasma‐polymerized TPOs at certain plasma conditions even for aging at 60 °C and 80% relative humidity for 5 days. The adhesion to primer for the soft, flexible TPOs (ETA‐3041c and ETA‐3101) was easily enhanced. The adhesion to primer for the hard and brittle TPOs (ETA‐3183) needs to optimize the plasma conditions to pass the dry‐ and wet‐adhesion test with methane plasmas. To relate the surface characteristics of methane plasma‐polymerized TPOs to adhesion performance with primer, the wettability and polarity of TPOs were evaluated by the contact‐angle measurements of primer and deionized water to TPOs. TPO surface morphology was evaluated with scanning electron microscopy. The surface composition was characterized with electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. PVDF/(PEI‐C/PAA)n functional membranes were prepared by layer‐by‐layer (LbL) assembly, and their heavy metal ions adsorption capability was investigated. The changes in the chemical compositions of membrane surfaces were determined by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). XPS results show that the surface of the PVDF membrane can be alternatively functionalized by PEI‐C and PAA. The membrane surface hydrophilicity was evaluated through water contact angle measurement. Contact angle results show that the surface hydrophilicity of the membrane surface depends on the outermost deposited layer. Morphological changes of membrane surfaces were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The water fluxes for these membranes were elevated after modification. The performances of the PVDF/(PEI‐C/PAA)n membranes on the adsorption of copper ions (Cu2+) from aqueous solutions were investigated by inductively coupled plasma (ICP). The results indicate that the PVDF/(PEI‐C/PAA)n functional membranes show high copper ions adsorption ability. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The influence of the surface chemistry of the cellulose fiber and polymer matrix on the mechanical and thermal dynamic mechanical properties of cellulose‐fiber‐reinforced polymer composites was investigated. The cellulose fiber was treated either with a coupling agent or with a coupling‐agent treatment followed by the introduction of quaternary ammonium groups onto the fiber surface, whereas the polymer matrix, with opposite polar groups such as polystyrene incorporated with sulfonated polystyrene and poly(ethylene‐co‐methacrylic acid), was compounded with the fiber. The grafting of the fiber surface was investigated with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Experimental results showed that an obvious improvement in the mechanical strength could be achieved for composites with an ionic interface between the fiber and the polymer matrix because of the adhesion enhancement of the fiber and the matrix. The improved adhesion could be ascribed to the grafted ionic groups at the cellulose‐fiber surface. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 41: 2022–2032, 2003  相似文献

The effect of poly(2‐vinyl pyridine) (P2VP) and poly(4‐vinyl pyridine) (P4VP) isomers on the growth of surface films on copper substrates was studied by electrochemical, spectroscopic, thermogravimentric, and microscopic methods. In acid environment (3% v/v acetic acid) and in the presence of KSCN, electrochemically generated copper cations reacted rapidly with SCN? and P2VP or P4VP, yielding coordination compounds, which deposited onto copper surfaces as films. The characteristics of such polymer–metal complexes (films) were markedly isomer‐dependent. Cu(I)/P2VP/SCN? complexes with monovalent cations and sulfur‐coordinated thiocyanate were obtained in the presence of P2VP, whereas the formation of Cu(II)/P4VP/SCN? complexes with divalent cations and nitrogen‐coordinated thiocyanate was observed in the presence of P4VP. Interestingly, similar physical–chemical properties (electronic structure, stoichiometry, and thermal behavior) were observed for materials synthesized by electrochemical and chemical methods. These results suggest, therefore, that control over the surface properties of copper substrates can be achieved using electrosynthesized films based on different PVP isomers. Besides acting as effective protective barriers against aggressive media and thus reducing the metal dissolution (corrosion) kinetics, these materials are potentially attractive for other applications in which surface properties are paramount, such as in catalysis. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Surface‐initiated atom‐transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of 4‐vinylpyridine (4VP) on a pretreated Si(100) surface was carried out. The composition and topography of the Si(100) surface modified by poly(4‐vinylpyridine) (P4VP) were characterized by XPS and atomic force microscopy (AFM), respectively. The P4VP layer on the Si(100) surface was used not only as chemisorption sites for the palladium complexes without prior sensitization by SnCl2 solution during the electroless plating, but also as an adhesion promotion layer for the electrolessly deposited copper. The electrolessly deposited copper on the Si–P4VP surface exhibited a 180° peel adhesion strength above 6 N/cm. The adhesion strength was much higher than that of the electrolessly deposited copper to the pristine silicon surface. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The adhesion between a glassy polymer melt and substrate is studied in the presence of end‐grafted chains chemically attached to the substrate surface. Extensive molecular dynamics simulations have been carried out to study the effect of the areal density ∑ of tethered chains and tensile pull velocity v on the adhesive failure mechanisms. The initial configurations are generated using a double‐bridging algorithm in which new bonds are formed across a pair of monomers equidistant from their respective free ends. This generates new chain configurations that are substantially different than the original two chains such that the systems can be equilibrated in a reasonable amount of cpu time. At the slowest tensile pull velocity studied, a crossover from chain scission to crazing is observed as the coverage increases, while for very large pull velocity, only chain scission is observed. As the coverage increases, the sections of the tethered chains pulled out from the interface form the fibrils of a craze that are strong enough to suppress chain scission, resulting in cohesive rather than adhesive failure. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The relaxation of liquid‐crystalline polymer (LCP) fibers in the polycarbonate (PC)/LCP blend was examined under various conditions on a hot‐stage microscope. LC5000 is a thermotropic LCP consisting of 80/20 hydroxybenzoic acid and poly(terephthalate). The geometry of the fibers is not an important factor in the relaxation process. Fibers of different aspect ratios and lengths relaxed at the same rate and exhibited identical onset times. Increasing the temperature caused the fibers to relax faster, especially near the nematic‐transition temperature. The fibers relaxed almost immediately when subjected to a temperature of 285 °C. At 280 °C the fibers were stable for 43 min, whereas at 270 °C no noticeable relaxation was evident. Addition of compatibilizer stabilized the fibers by enhancing the interfacial adhesion between the fibers and the PC matrix. Consequently, LCP fibers in the compatibilized system relaxed at a much higher temperature (294 °C) as compared with the uncompatibilized system (275–280 °C). © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The fabrication of novel hydrophobic, superhydrophobic, and oleophobic surfaces on glass using nanosilica particles modified with polymer brushes prepared via surface initiated Cu(0)‐mediated reversible‐deactivation radical polymerization was demonstrated. Monomers including n‐butyl acrylate, 2,2,2‐trifluoroethyl methacrylate, and 1,1,1,3,3,3‐hexafluoroisopropyl acrylate were used to synthesize a series of nanosilica–polymer organic/inorganic hybrid materials. Products were analyzed using infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The coated nanosilica showed core–shell structures that contains polymer brushes up to 67 wt %. The application of these particles for modifying surface wettability was examined by covalently attaching them to glass via a recently developed one‐pot “grafting to” methodology using “thio‐bromo click” chemistry. Atomic force microscopy topographic images show up to 25 times increase in roughness of the coated glass compared to blank glass sample. Contact angle measurements showed that nanosilica coated with PBA and PTFEM produced hydrophobic glass surfaces, while a superhydrophobic and oleophobic surface was generated using nanosilica functionalized with PHFIPA. This novel methodology can produce superhydrophobic and oleophobic surfaces in an easy and fast way without the need for tedious and time‐consuming processes, such as layer‐by‐layer deposition, high temperature calcination, and fluorinated oil infusion. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis of poly[(oligoethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate] [poly(OEGA)] brushes was achieved via reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization and used to selectively immobilize streptavidin proteins. Initially, gold surfaces were modified with a trithiocarbonate‐based RAFT chain transfer agent (CTA) by using an ester reaction involving a gold substrate modified with 11‐mercapto‐1‐undecanol and bis(2‐butyric acid)trithiocarbonate. poly(OEGA) brushes were then prepared via RAFT‐mediated polymerization from the surface‐immobilized CTA. The immobilization of CTA on the gold surface and the subsequent polymer formation were followed by ellipsometry, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, grazing angle‐Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and water contact‐angle measurements. RAFT‐mediated polymerization method gave CTA groups to grafted poly(OEGA) termini, which can be converted to various biofunctional groups. The terminal carboxylic acid groups of poly(OEGA) chains were functionalized with amine‐functionalized biotin units to provide selective attachment points for streptavidin proteins. Fluorescence microscopy measurements confirmed the successful immobilization of streptavidin molecules on the polymer brushes. It is demonstrated that this fabrication method may be successfully applied for specific protein recognition and immobilization. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The free‐radical polymerization of styrene initiated from a functionalized poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) surface yielded a tethered polymer layer. The anchoring of the initiator species on the PET surface was performed from surface‐reactive groups easily generated by an alkaline hydrolysis of PET. After each surface modification, PET films were characterized by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, measurements of water contact angles, and time‐of‐flight secondary‐ion mass spectrometry. The influence of the polymerization duration, the grafted initiator density, and the grafting mode on the efficiency of the surface‐initiated polymerization of styrene was investigated. In some cases, the tethering of the polystyrene layer on PET could be a reversible process. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 41: 1347–1359, 2003  相似文献
