Engineering of the highest occupied molecular orbital and lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals through synthetic chemical structural modification has been the most widely used method to tuning optoelectronic properties in conjugated polymers. The electronic, thermal, optical, and physical properties can be tuned and exploited for optimization of optoelectronic devices. Through copolymerization of donor and acceptor type conjugated monomers, the frontier orbitals of four polymers were tailored. Through this synthetic engineering, the relationship between structural features, frontier orbital tailoring, and changes in optoelectronic and physical properties are discussed. Spectroscopic, thermal, and electronic analysis of the polymers indicated that polymers containing carbazole monomer moieties gave overall improved optoelectronic properties, but higher band gaps (2.61 and 2.18 eV) in comparison to their phenyl‐ based counterparts. This result is attributed to the higher electron density of the carbazole than the terephthaldicarboxaldehyde, and the possible deviation from planarity in the polymer main chain due to possible steric hindrance of the branched substituents. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two conjugated polymers based on poly(phenylenethiophene) and poly (fluorenethiophene) main chain functionalized with pendant trithiocyanato ruthenium terpyridine complexes were synthesized by the Suzuki coupling reaction. The ruthenium complexes can extend the absorption band to longer wavelength and enhance the photosensitivity in this region. The polymers exhibit very broad absorption band spanning from 400 to 750 nm due to the presence of π‐conjugated system and the ruthenium complexes. Such enhancement in optical absorption enables the utilization of solar light in the near IR region. By space charge limited current modeling, the hole carrier mobilities of the polymers were calculated to be in the order of 10?4 cm2 V?1 s?1, which greatly facilitate the transport of charges after the separation of excitons. Heterojunction photovoltaic cells with simple structure ITO/polymer/C60/Al were fabricated. Under simulated AM1.5 solar light illumination, the short circuit currents, open circuit voltages, and power conversion efficiencies of the photovoltaic cells were measured to be 1.53–2.58 mA cm?2, 0.12–0.24 V, and 0.084–0.12%, respectively. Deposition of PEDOT:PSS on ITO surface did not show significant difference in device performance. Plot of incident photon to charge efficiency as the function of wavelength suggests that absorption by both conjugated main chain and ruthenium complex are essential to the photocurrent generation. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Donor‐acceptor conjugated polymers containing a new imide‐functionalized naphthodithiophene (INDT) as the acceptor unit and a 2,2'‐bithiophene with varied substituents as the donor unit have been synthesized. The bandgaps of these polymers depend strongly on the dihedral angle of the 2,2'‐bithiophene unit. The 3,3'‐dialkoxy substitution (polymers PDOR / PBOR ) leads to near planar bithiophene conformation due to the well‐known S–O short contact, while the 3,3'‐dialkyl substitution (polymer PDR ) results in significant twisting due to the steric effect. Consequently PDOR / PBOR shows the lowest bandgap of 1.82/1.85 eV while PDR has a bandgap of 2.38 eV. Bulk‐heterojunction solar cells of the polymer/fullerene blends have been fabricated. Preliminary results show that PBOR gives the best device performance with power conversion efficiencies as high as 2.45% in air without any thermal annealing treatment, indicating the promising potential of INDT‐containing conjugated polymers for efficient solar cells. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polyfluorene homopolymer ( P1 ) and its carbazole derivatives ( P2 – P4 ) have been prepared with good yield by Suzuki coupling polymerization. P2 is an alternating copolymer based on fluorene and carbazole; P3 is a hyperbranched polymer with carbazole derivative as the core and polyfluorene as the long arms; P4 is a hyperbranched polymer with carbazole derivative as the core and the alternating fluorene and carbazole as the long arms. These polymers show highly thermal stability, and their structures and physical properties are studied using gel permeation chromatography, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetry, UV–vis absorption, photoluminescence, and cyclic voltammetry (CV). The influence of the incorporation of carbazole and the hyperbranched structures on the thermal, electrochemical, and electroluminescent properties has been investigated. Both carbazole addition and the hyperbranched structure increase the thermal and photoluminescent stability. The CV shows an increase of the HOMO energy levels for the derivatives, compared with polyfluorene homopolymer ( P1 ). The EL devices fabricated by these polymers exhibit pure blue‐light‐emitting with negligible low‐energy emission bands, indicating that the hyperbranched structure has a strong effect on the PLED characteristics. The results imply that incorporating carbazole into polyfluorene to form a hyperbranched structure is an efficient way to obtain highly stable blue‐light‐emitting conjugated polymers, and it is possible to adjust the property of light‐emitting polymers by the amount of carbazole derivative incorporated into the polymers. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report here the synthesis via Suzuki polymerization of two novel alternating polymers containing 9,9‐dioctylfluorene and electron‐withdrawing 4,4′‐dihexyl‐2,2′‐bithiazole moieties, poly[(4,4′‐dihexyl‐2,2′‐bithiazole‐5,5′‐diyl)‐alt‐(9,9‐dioctylfluorene‐2,7‐diyl)] (PHBTzF) and poly[(5,5′‐bis(2″‐thienyl)‐4,4′‐dihexyl‐2,2′‐bithiazole‐5″,5″‐diyl)‐alt‐(9,9‐dioctylfluorene‐2,7‐diyl)] (PTHBTzTF), and their application to electronic devices. The ultraviolet–visible absorption maxima of films of PHBTzF and PTHBTzTF were 413 and 471 nm, respectively, and the photoluminescence maxima were 513 and 590 nm, respectively. Cyclic voltammetry experiment showed an improvement in the n‐doping stability of the polymers and a reduction of their lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy levels as a result of bithiazole in the polymers' main chain. The highest occupied molecular orbital energy levels of the polymers were ?5.85 eV for PHBTzF and ?5.53 eV for PTHBTzTF. Conventional polymeric light‐emitting‐diode devices were fabricated in the ITO/PEDOT:PSS/polymer/Ca/Al configuration [where ITO is indium tin oxide and PEDOT:PSS is poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene) doped with poly(styrenesulfonic acid)] with the two polymers as emitting layers. The PHBTzF device exhibited a maximum luminance of 210 cd/m2 and a turn‐on voltage of 9.4 V, whereas the PTHBTzTF device exhibited a maximum luminance of 1840 cd/m2 and a turn‐on voltage of 5.4 V. In addition, a preliminary organic solar‐cell device with the ITO/PEDOT:PSS/(PTHBTzTF + C60)/Ca/Al configuration (where C60 is fullerene) was also fabricated. Under 100 mW/cm2 of air mass 1.5 white‐light illumination, the device produced an open‐circuit voltage of 0.76 V and a short‐circuit current of 1.70 mA/cm2. The fill factor of the device was 0.40, and the power conversion efficiency was 0.52%. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 43: 1845–1857, 2005  相似文献

In conjugated polymers, a majority of photogenerated charges form metastable geminate pairs (GPs), of which only some fraction can dissociate completely. Both the yield of GP photogeneration and the probability of further dissociation of GPs into free charges depend upon an external electric field. In the present article we discuss several experimental methods to detect the existence of geminate pairs such as delayed field collection of charges, field quenching of fluorescence, and field-assisted photoinduced optical absorption. It is shown that the field dependences of the exciton dissociation into GPs and of the free carrier photogeneration yield are rather similar. This is in contrast with the traditional Onsager theory, which assumes field-independent yield of primary photoionization and disregards the field dependence of the initial separations between carriers in GPs.  相似文献

We have synthesized three new donor–acceptor‐type monomers to achieve soluble and processable low‐band gap polymers, 4,7‐bis(4‐octyl‐2‐thienyl)‐2,1,3‐benzothiadiazole (B4TB), 4,7‐bis(3‐octyl‐2‐thienyl)‐2,1,3‐benzothiadiazole (B3TB), and 4‐(3‐octyl‐2‐thienyl)‐7‐(4‐octyl‐2‐thienyl)‐2,1,3‐benzothiadiazole (B34TB), by the Suzuki coupling reaction. Using B4TB and B3TB, two soluble high molecular weight regioregular head‐to‐head and tail‐to‐tail polymers poly[4,7‐bis(4‐octyl‐2‐thienyl)‐2,1,3‐ benzothiadiazole] (PB4TB) and poly[4,7‐bis(3‐octyl‐2‐thienyl)‐2,1,3‐benzothiadiazole] (PB3TB) were prepared via iron(III) chloride‐mediated oxidative polymerization. The structures of the polymers were confirmed by 1H and 13C NMR, and the molecular weights were determined by size exclusion chromatography. The optical properties (absorbance and fluorescence) of the monomers and polymers were studied and compared with unsubstituted analogues. The monomers and polymers bearing octyl substituents on the thiophene rings pointing away from the benzothiadiazole units (B4TB and PB4TB) possess a more planar structure, and their optical spectra appear redshifted as compared with those having the octyl chain nearer to the benzothiadiazole (B3TB and PB3TB). The optical band gaps of PB3BT (Eg = 2.01 eV) and PB4BT (Eg = 1.96 eV), however, are at much higher energy levels than that of the unsubstituted electrochemically polymerized PBTB material (Eg = 1.1–1.2 eV) as a result of steric effects of the octyl chains. The electrochemical properties of the monomers and polymers were examined using cyclic voltammetry and reflect the effect of alkyl substitution. B4TB and PB4TB were oxidized at a lower potential than B3TB and PB3TB, whereas their reduction potentials were less negative. The electrochemical band gap calculated from the onset of the reduction and oxidation process agreed with the optical band gap calculated from the absorption edges. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A series of soluble, conjugated, electrophosphorescent copolymers with (meso‐tetraphenylporphyrinato‐κ4N)platinum(II) (PtTPP) complexes incorporated into the polymer main chain were synthesized through the copolymerization of narrow‐band‐gap monomeric porphyrin–platinum(II) complexes and wide‐band‐gap dialkyl‐substituted fluorene monomers by a modified Suzuki coupling reaction. The study of the photoluminescence decay indicated that poly[2,7‐(9,9‐dioctylfluorene)‐co‐2,12‐((meso‐tetraphenylporphyrinato‐κ4N)platinum(II))] (PFO–PtTPP) was a triplet emitter. The electroluminescence emission from the fluorene segment was completely quenched for copolymers with PtTPP contents as low as 0.5 mol %. The PFO–PtTPP copolymers emitted deep red light. The device based on the porphyrin–platinum(II) copolymer PFO–5PtTPP (with 5 mol % PtTPP in the copolymer) showed the highest external quantum efficiency of 1.95% with an emission peak at 684 nm in an indium tin oxide/poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene)/polyvinylcarbazole (PVK)/70:30 (w/w) PFO–5PtTPP: 2‐(biphenyl‐4‐yl)‐5‐(4‐tert‐butylphenyl)‐1,3,4‐oxadiazole/Ba/Al device configuration. In comparison with the PFO–PtTPP copolymers synthesized via a postpolymerization metalation route, copolymerization from Pt metal complexes proved to be a more efficient synthetic route for high‐efficiency electrophosphorescent polymers. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Three of conjugated polymers based on pyromellitic diimide (PMDI) as the acceptor unit and thienothiophene (TT) as the donor unit were successfully synthesized by Stille coupling. The effect of the side chain length and thiophene π‐bridge on the polymers' optical and electrochemical properties was investigated. Electrochemical characterization indicated that these polymers have deep highest occupied molecular orbital energy levels between ?5.7 and ?5.8 eV. Polymer solar cells were fabricated by using these PMDI‐based polymers as the donor and [6,6]‐phenyl‐C61‐butyric acid methyl ester as the acceptor. The polymer P1 whose PMDI unit was functionalized with 2‐ethylhexyl side chain shows the higher short‐circuit current (Jsc) and fill factor (FF) compared with that of P2 with a 2‐octyldodecyl side chain on the PMDI unit. The results also illustrate that the insertion of a thiophene π‐bridge between PMDI and TT (the polymer P3) leads to the broader absorption and better photovoltaic performance. The best performance was obtained from the cell based on the polymer P3 with a power conversion efficiency of 0.43% under the illumination of AM 1.5 G, 100 mW/cm2. The synthesis of two new conjugated polymers based on the relatively under‐exploited monomer, 5,8‐dibromo‐2‐[5‐(2‐hexyldecyl)‐2‐thienyl]‐1H‐dithieno[3,2‐e:2′,3′‐g]benzimidazole (dithienobenzimidazole, DTBI ), and either 4,7‐bis[4‐hexyl‐5‐(trimethylstannyl)‐2‐thienyl]‐2,1,3‐benzothiadiazole ( BTD ) or 2,6‐bis(trimethylstannyl)‐4,8‐bis(5‐(2‐ethylhexyl) thiophen‐2‐yl)benzo[1,2‐b:4,5‐b′]dithiophene ( BDT ) is described. The polymers were synthesized via Stille polycondensation and characterized by traditional methods (1H NMR, gel‐permeation chromatography, matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry, thermal gravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy, photoluminescence, and cyclic voltammetry). Prior to their synthesis, trimer structures were modeled by DFT calculations facilitating a further understanding of the systems' electronic and geometric structure. Polymers were titrated with acid and base to take advantage of their amphiprotic imidazole moiety and their optical response monitored with ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy. Finally, pristine polymer thin‐films were treated with acid and base to evaluate (de)protonation's effect on system electronics, but thin‐film degradation was encountered. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. By means of the MNDO, AM1, and PM3 methods, standard heats of formation, entropies, ionization potentials, and molecular dipole moments of the pyridine series compounds have been computed. The information on the experimental values of the above quantities has been systematized. Linear dependencies allowing a priori evaluation of thermodynamic and molecular characteristics of pyridines have been stated. Correlations of the 2,2′‐bipyridines pKa values for aqueous solutions with the gaseous‐phase proton affinities have been found. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of four π‐conjugated carbazole‐alt‐benzothiadiazole copolymers (PCBT) were prepared by Suzuki cross‐coupling reaction between synthesized dibromocarbazoles as electron‐rich subunits and 4,7‐bis(4,4,5,5‐tetramethyl‐1,3,2‐dioxaborolan‐2‐yl)?2,1,3‐benzothiadiazole as electron‐deficient subunits. The subunits were directly linked through 2,7‐ or 3,6‐ positions of the carbazole. In addition, the carbazole monomers have been N‐substituted by a branched or a linear side‐chain. The chemical structure of the copolymers and their precursors was confirmed by NMR and IR spectroscopies, and their molar masses were estimated by SEC. Thermal analysis under N2 atmosphere showed no weight loss below 329°C, and no glass transition was observed in between 0 and 250°C. The band gaps of all PCBTs evaluated by optical spectroscopies and by cyclic voltammetry analysis were consistent with expectations and ranged between 2.2 and 2.3 eV. Finally, 2,7 and 3,6 linkages were shown to influence optical properties of PCBTs. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Chem. 2015 , 53, 2059–2068  相似文献

Conjugated polymers were grafted onto cellulose substrates in an effort to create a general method for the synthesis of conjugated polymer/cellulose hybrid materials. In this report, we describe the grafting of poly(fluorene), poly(fluorenevinylene), and a poly(fluorene‐ethynylene‐phenylene) onto modified cellulose paper substrates using Suzuki, Heck, and Sonogashira‐type polymerizations, respectively. The application of these three widely used coupling chemistries to surface‐grafted conjugated polymers on cellulose provides a general route to cellulose‐based hybrid materials tunable with almost any aromatic repeat structure for specific applications. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Four ethynylene‐containing donor‐acceptor alternating conjugated polymers P1 – P4 with 2,5‐bis(dodecyloxy) substituted phenylene or carbazole as the donor unit and benzothiadiazole (BTZ) as the acceptor unit were synthesized and used as donor polymers in bulk heterojunction polymer solar cells. The optical, electrochemical, and photovoltaic properties of these four polymers with the ethylene unit located at different positions of the polymer chains were systematically investigated. Our results demonstrated that absorption spectra and the HOMO and LUMO energy levels of polymers could be tuned by varying the position of the ethynylene unit in the polymer chains. Photovoltaic devices based on polymer/PC71BM blend films spin coated from chloroform and dichlorobenzene solutions were investigated. For all four polymers, open circuit voltages (Voc) higher than 0.8 V were obtained. P4 , with ethynylene unit between BTZ and thiophene, shows the best performance among these four polymers, with a Voc of 0.94 V, a Jsc of 4.2 mA/cm2, an FF of 0.40, and a PCE of 1.6%. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two kinds of amphiphilic dendronized conjugated polymers, polyfluorene (PF) and poly(binaphthyl‐alt‐fluorene) (PBF), were synthesized by Suzuki polycondensation of hydrophobic macromonomers with two nonpolar octyloxy chains and hydrophilic macromonomers with two polar oligo(ethylene oxide) chains. In these polymers, PF possesses a linear rod‐like backbone structure, and PBF adopts a folded rigid backbone structure. The different configurations in the conjugated main chains result in different supramolecular self‐assembly morphologies. The optical and thermal properties of PF and PBF were also studied. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 46: 574–584, 2008  相似文献

A series of novel soluble donor‐acceptor low‐bandgap‐conjugated polymers consisting of different oligothiophene (OTh) coupled to electron‐accepting moiety 2‐pyran‐4‐ylidenemalononitrile (PM)‐based unit were synthesized by Stille or Suzuki coupling polymerization. The combination of electron‐accepting PM building block with varied OThn (the number of thiophene unit increases from 3 to 5) results in enhanced π–π stacking in solid state and intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) transition, which lead to an extension of the absorption spectra of the copolymers. Cyclic voltammetry measurements and molecular orbital distribution calculations indicate that the highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMO) energy levels could be fine‐tuned by changing the number of thiophene units of the copolymers, and the resulting copolymers possessed relatively low HOMO energy levels promising good air stability and high‐open circuit voltage (Voc) for photovoltaic application. Bulk heterojunction photovoltaic devices were fabricated by using the copolymers as donors and (6,6)‐phenyl C61‐butyric acid methyl ester as acceptor. It was found that the highest Voc reached 0.94 V, and the short circuit currents (Jsc) were improved from 1.78 to 2.54 mA/cm2, though the power conversion efficiencies of the devices were measured between 0.61 and 0.99% under simulated AM 1.5 solar irradiation of 100 mW/cm2, which indicated that this series copolymers can be promising candidates for the photovoltaic applications. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of low bandgap conjugated polymers consisting of benzothiadiazole alternating with dithienothiophene (DTT) or dithienopyrrole (DTP) unit with or without 3‐alkylthiophene bridge have been synthesized. Effect of the fused rings and 3‐alkylthiophene bridge on the thermal, optical, electrochemical, charge transport, and photovoltaic properties of these polymers have been investigated. These polymers show broad absorption extending from 300 to 1000 nm with optical bandgaps as low as 1.2 eV; the details of which can be varied either by incorporating 3‐alkylthiophene bridge or by replacing DTT with DTP. The LUMO levels (?2.9 to ?3.3 eV) are essentially unaffected by the specific choice of donor moiety, whereas the HOMO levels (?4.6 to ?5.6 eV) are more sensitive to the choice of donor. The DTT and DTP polymers with 3‐alkylthiophene bridge were found to exhibit hole mobilities of 8 × 10?5 and 3 × 10?2 cm2 V?1 s?1, respectively, in top‐contact organic field‐effect transistors. Power conversion efficiencies in the range 0.17–0.43% were obtained under simulated AM 1.5, 100 mW cm?2 irradiation for polymer solar cells using the DTT and DTP‐based polymers with 3‐alkylthiophene bridge as donor and fullerene derivatives as acceptor. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this study, two new conjugated polymers were synthesized including benzotriazole (BTz) as the acceptor unit and selenophene as the π bridge donor segment. These acceptors were coupled with fluorene and carbazole via Suzuki condensation reactions. Electrochemical band gaps were calculated as 2.45 eV for P1 and 2.40 eV for P2. Electrochemical and optical studies of polymers indicate that both polymers are promising candidates for organic solar cell (OSC) and polymer organic light emitting diode (PLED) applications since they have suitable HOMO-LUMO energy levels and appropriate absorption and emission band ranges. Light emitting properties of synthesized polymers were investigated and the highest luminance value was found as 6608cd/m2 for P1 at 8 V. Photovoltaic properties of polymers were investigated and the optimized device based on P2 showed 1.75% power conversion efficiency for P2 under AM 1.5 G illumination at 100 mW/cm2.  相似文献

Methods for characterising cyclic polymers are illustrated by reference first to dilute solution methods for cyclic poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) and then to the entrapment of cyclic polymers in networks. Preparative routes to cyclic polymers are then reviewed, including ring-chain equilibration reactions, coupling and condensation reactions and new methods using polymer-supported reagents. Some of the properties of cyclic PDMS are discussed, including differences between ring and chain polymer properties such as their melt viscosities and glass transition temperatures. Methods for preparing the first polymeric catenanes are described, using polymer-supported reagents. In this study, donor–acceptor random polymers containing benzotriazole acceptor and bistriphenylamine and benzodithiophene donors, P1 and P2 , were successfully synthesized by Stille coupling polymerization. The effect of bistriphenylamine moiety and thiophene π‐conjugated linker on electrochemical, spectroelectrochemical, and optical behaviors of the polymers were investigated. Optoelectronic properties and photovoltaic performance of the polymers were examined under the illumination of AM 1.5G, 100 mW cm?2. The polymers were characterized by cyclic voltammetry, UV‐Vis‐NIR absorption spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography. HOMO/LUMO energy levels of P1 and P2 were calculated as ?5.47 eV/–3.41 eV and ?5.43 eV/–3.27 eV, respectively. Bulk heterojunction type solar cells were constructed using blends of the polymers (donor) and [6,6]‐phenyl C71 butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) (acceptor).
