The poly(ethylene glycol)/poly(2‐(N,N‐dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PEG/PDMAEMA) double hydrophilic block copolymers were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization using mPEG‐Br or Br‐PEG‐Br as macroinitiators. The narrow molecular weight distribution of PEG/PDMAEMA block copolymers was identified by gel permeation chromatography results. The thermosensitivity of PEG/PDMAEMA block copolymers in aqueous solution was revealed to depend significantly on pH, ionic strength, chain structure, and concentration of the block copolymers. By optimizing these factors, the cloud point temperature of PEG/PDMAEMA block copolymers can be limited within body temperature range (30–37 °C), which suggests that PEG/PDMAEMA block copolymers could be a good candidate for drug delivery systems. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Herein we report a successful dispersion polymerization of 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) in a carbon dioxide continuous phase with a block copolymer consisting of polystyrene and poly(1,1‐dihydroperfluorooctyl acrylate) as a stabilizer. Poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate) was effectively emulsified in carbon dioxide with the amphiphilic diblock copolymer surfactant, and the successful stabilization of the polymerization simultaneously gave spherical particles in the submicrometer range with relatively narrow particle size distributions. The initial concentrations of HEMA and the stabilizer and the pressure had substantial effects on the size of the colloidal particles. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. We investigated the chemical fixation of carbon dioxide (CO 2) to a copolymer bearing epoxide and the application of the cyclic carbonate group containing copolymer to polymer blends. In the synthesis of poly[(2‐oxo‐1,3‐dioxolane‐4‐yl)methyl methacrylate‐co‐styrene] [poly(DOMA‐co‐St)] from the addition of CO 2 to poly(glycidyl methacrylate‐co‐styrene) [poly(GMA‐co‐St)], quaternary ammonium salts showed good catalytic activity at mild reaction conditions. The CO 2 addition reaction followed pseudo first‐order kinetics with the concentration of poly(GMA‐co‐St). In order to expand the applications of the CO 2 fixed copolymer, polymer blends of this copolymer with poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) or poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) were cast from N,N′‐dimethylformamide (DMF) solution. Miscibility of blends of poly(DOMA‐co‐St) with PMMA or PVC have been investigated both by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and visual inspection of the blends, and the blends were miscible over the whole composition ranges. The miscibility behaviors were also discussed in terms of FT‐IR spectra. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A series of random copolymers, composed of 1H,1H‐perfluorooctyl methacrylate (FOMA) and 2‐dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) were prepared as stabilizers for the dispersion polymerization of methyl methacrylate in supercritical CO2 (scCO2). Free‐flowing, spherical poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) particles were produced in high yield by the effective stabilization of poly(FOMA‐co‐DMAEMA) containing 34–67 w/w % (15–41 m/m %) FOMA structural units. Less stabilized but micron‐sized discrete particles could be obtained even with 25 w/w % (10 m/m %) FOMA stabilizer. The result showed that the composition of copolymeric stabilizers had a dramatic effect on the size and morphology of PMMA. The particle size was controllable with the surfactant concentration. The effect of the monomer concentration and the initial pressure on the polymerization was also investigated. The dry polymer powder obtained from dispersion polymerization could be redispersed to form stable aqueous latexes in an acidic buffered solution (pH = 2.1) by an electrostatic stabilization mechanism due to the ionization of DMAEMA units in the stabilizer. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report the successful precipitation polymerization of 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) at pressures ranging from 15 to 27 MPa utilizing 2, 2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as a free radical initiator. The effects of the reaction pressure, initiator concentration, monomer concentration, reaction temperature, and reaction time were investigated. Analyses by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) indicated that in all reaction conditions, polymerization in the absence of stabilizer led to the formation of large aggregates of partially coalesced particles, with diameters of approximate 1–10 µm. Analyses by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) indicated that for the reaction pressure, initiator concentration, monomer concentration, reaction temperature, and reaction time studied there are appreciable effect on product molecular weight. The copper‐catalyzed atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of poly(propylene glycol) methacrylate (PPGM) in solution to produce linear and starlike polymers is reported, using methylethyl ketone as the solvent and a temperature of 80 °C. The ATRP system used was efficient for polymerization of the functionalized monomer without protecting hydroxyl end groups of monomer. The polymerizations were consistent with “living” or controlled processes, as revealed by the linear evolution of molecular weight with conversion. Increasing the [M]0:[I]0 ratio resulted in increasing molecular weights, whereas the polydispersity indices remained low (Mw/Mn < 1.4) even at high conversion. Decreasing the [CuBr]0:[I]0 ratio resulted in lower conversions, slightly larger polydispersities, and decreased molecular weights, likely resulting from a lower initiation efficiency. Polymers were characterized by 1H and 13C NMR; molecular weights of polymers with low degrees of polymerization were estimated by end‐group analysis from 13C NMR spectra obtained using distortionless enhancement by polarization transfer and the gated decoupling techniques. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The atom transfer radical copolymerization of styrene with 2‐[(perfluorononenyl)oxy] ethyl methacrylate was performed in benzotrifluoride at 100 °C in the presence of 1‐bromoethyl benzene (1‐BrEB), cuprous bromide (CuBr), and α,α′‐bipyridine (bpy; [1‐BrEB]0/[CuBr]0/[bpy]0 = 1/1/3). The experimental results demonstrate that this polymerization proceeded in a living fashion, producing fluorinated random copolymers with narrow polydispersities, controlled molecular weights, and desired unit ratios. The compositions of the copolymers were calculated from 1H NMR spectra. The monomer reactivity ratios were obtained with the Skeist integral method. The copolymers were characterized by gel permeation chromatography, Fourier transform infrared, and differential scanning calorimetry. The solid surface characteristics of the copolymers were evaluated with contact‐angle measurements. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 39: 2670–2676, 2001  相似文献

Poly(ethylene terephthalate)‐co‐poly(propylene glycol) (PET‐co‐PPG) copolymers with PPG ratio ranging from 0 to 0.90 mol% were synthesized by the melt copolycondensation. The intrinsic viscosity, structure, non‐isothermal crystallization behavior, nucleation and spherulitic growth of the copolymers were investigated by Ubbelohde viscometer, Proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (1H‐NMR), differential scanning calorimetry, and polarized optical microscopy, respectively. The non‐isothermal crystallization process of the copolymers was analyzed by Avrami, Ozawa, Mo's, Kissinger, and Dobreva methods, respectively. The results showed that the crystallizability of PET was apparently enhanced with incorporating a small amount of PPG, which first rose and then reduced with increasing amount of PPG in the copolymers at a given cooling rate. The crystallization mechanism was a three‐dimensional growth with both instantaneous and sporadic nucleation. Particularly, PET‐co‐PPG containing 0.60 mol% PPG exhibited the highest crystallizability among all the copolymers. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Amphiphilic graft copolymers consisting of monomeric units of poly(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether acrylate, lauryl or stearyl methacrylate, and 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate were synthesized and characterized. The effectiveness of these poly(ethylene glycol)‐containing graft copolymers in stabilizing styrene emulsion polymerization was evaluated. The polymerization rate (Rp) increases with increasing graft copolymer concentration, initiator concentration, or temperature. At a constant graft copolymer concentration, Rp increases, and the amount of coagulum decreases with the increasing hydrophilicity of graft copolymers. The polymerization system does not follow Smith–Ewart case II kinetics. The desorption of free radicals out of latex particles plays an important role in the polymerization kinetics. The overall activation energy and the activation energy for the radical desorption process are 85.4 and 34.3 kJ/mol, respectively. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This study was related to the investigation of the chemical fixation of carbon dioxide to a copolymer bearing epoxide and the application of the cyclic carbonate group containing copolymer‐to‐polymer blends. In the synthesis of poly[(2‐oxo‐1,3‐dioxolane‐4‐yl) methyl methacrylate‐co‐ethyl acrylate] [poly(DOMA‐co‐EA)] from poly(glycidyl methacrylate‐co‐ethyl acrylate) [poly(GMA‐co‐EA)] and CO2, quaternary ammonium salts showed good catalytic activity. The films of poly(DOMA‐co‐EA) with poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) or poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) blends were cast from N,N′‐dimethylformamide solution. The miscibility of the blends of poly(DOMA‐co‐EA) with PMMA or PVC have been investigated both by DSC and visual inspection of the blends. The optical clarity test and DSC analysis showed that poly(DOMA‐co‐EA) containing blends were miscible over the whole composition range. The miscibility behaviors were discussed in terms of Fourier transform infrared spectra and interaction parameters based on the binary interaction model. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Block copolymers based on poly(vinylidene fluoride), PVDF, and a series of poly(aromatic sulfonate) sequences were synthesized from controlled radical polymerizations (CRPs). According to the aromatic monomers, appropriate techniques of CRP were chosen: either iodine transfer polymerization (ITP) or atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) from PVDF‐I macromolecular chain transfer agents (CTAs) or PVDF‐CCl3 macroinitiator, respectively. These precursors were produced either by ITP of VDF with C6F13I or by radical telomerization of VDF with chloroform, respectively. Poly(vinylidene fluoride)‐b‐poly(sodium styrene sulfonate), PVDF‐b‐PSSS, block copolymers were produced from both techniques via a direct polymerization of sodium styrene sulfonate (SSS) monomer or an indirect way with the use of styrene sulfonate ethyl ester (SSE) as a protected monomer. Although the reaction led to block copolymers, the kinetics of ITP of SSS showed that PVDF‐I macromolecular CTAs were not totally efficient because a limitation of the CTA consumption (56%) was observed. This was probably explained by both the low activity of the CTA (that contained inefficient PVDF‐CF2CH2? I) and a fast propagation rate of the monomer. That behavior was also noted in the ITP of SSE. On the other hand, ATRP of SSS initiated by PVDF‐CCl3 was more controlled up to 50% of conversion leading to PVDF‐b‐PSSS block copolymer with an average number molar mass of 6000 g·mol?1. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of well‐defined, fluorinated diblock copolymers, poly[2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate]‐b‐poly(2,2,2‐trifluoroethyl methacrylate) (PDMA‐b‐PTFMA), poly[2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate]‐b‐poly(2,2,3,4,4,4‐hexafluorobutyl methacrylate) (PDMA‐b‐PHFMA), and poly[2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate]‐b‐poly(2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5‐octafluoropentyl methacrylate) (PDMA‐b‐POFMA), have been synthesized successfully via oxyanion‐initiated polymerization. Potassium benzyl alcoholate (BzO?K+) was used to initiate DMA monomer to yield the first block PDMA. If not quenched, the first living chain could be subsequently used to initiate a feed F‐monomer (such as TFMA, HFMA, or OFMA) to produce diblock copolymers containing different poly(fluoroalkyl methacrylate) moieties. The composition and chemical structure of these fluorinated copolymers were confirmed by 1H NMR, 19F NMR spectroscopy, and gel permeation chromatography (GPC) techniques. The solution behaviors of these copolymers containing (tri‐, hexa‐, or octa‐ F‐atom)FMA were investigated by the measurements of surface tension, dynamic light scattering (DLS), and UV spectrophotometer. The results indicate that these fluorinated copolymers possess relatively high surface activity, especially at neutral media. Moreover, the DLS and UV measurements showed that these fluorinated diblock copolymers possess distinct pH/temperature‐responsive properties, depending not only on the PDMA segment but also on the fluoroalkyl structure of the FMA units. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Materials bearing ionic monomers were obtained through free radical terpolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA), poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (PMEM) or poly(ethylene glycol) ethyl ether methacrylate (PEEM) with methacrylic acid (MA) and sodium styrene sulfonate (NaSS). The reactions were carried out in dimethyl sulfoxide using azobis(isobutyronitrile) as initiator. The reactivity ratios of the different couple of monomers were calculated according to the general copolymerization equation using the Finnemann-Ross, Kelen-Tüdos and Tidwell-Mortimer methods. The values of the reactivity ratios indicate that the different monomer units can be considered as randomly distributed along the chains for terpolymerizations of MMA, PMEM or PEEM with MA and NaSS. The average composition of the comonomers in the different terpolymers were calculated, showing a good agreement between the experimental and theoretical compositions. The instantaneous compositions are constant until about 70% of conversion. For higher conversions, the insertion of ionic monomers increases or decreases according to the system studied.  相似文献

Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) particles were produced by dispersion polymerization of methyl methacrylate in the presence of mercaptopropyl terminated poly(dimethylsiloxane) (MP-PDMS) in supercritical carbon dioxide at about 30 MPa for 24 h at 65 °C. The particle diameter could be controlled in a size range of submicron to micron by varying MP-PDMS concentration. The MP-PDMS worked as not only a chain transfer agent but also a colloidal stabilizer, which was named tran stab.Part CCLI of the series Studies on suspension and emulsion  相似文献

Crosslinked poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate)‐based magnetic microspheres were prepared in a simple one‐step procedure by dispersion polymerization in the presence of several kinds of iron oxides. Cellulose acetate butyrate and dibenzoyl peroxide were used as steric stabilizer and polymerization initiator, respectively, and ethylene dimethacrylate was a crosslinking agent. The resulting product was characterized in terms of particle size, particle size distribution, iron(III) content, and magnetic properties. In the presence of needle‐like maghemite in the polymerization mixture and under suitable conditions, magnetic microspheres with relatively narrow size distribution were formed. An increase in the particle size and, at the same time, a decrease in molecular weight of uncrosslinked polymers resulted, as the continuous phase became richer in 2‐methylpropan‐1‐ol. Coercive force of needle‐like maghemite‐containing particles was higher than that of cubic magnetite‐loaded microspheres. Coercive force increased with the decreasing iron content in the particles. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 38: 1161–1171, 2000  相似文献

The vinyl of the ester group of 2-vinyloxyethyl methacrylate was first selectively reacted with acetic acid to obtain 2-[1-(acetoxy)ethoxy]ethyl methacrylate ( 2 ). This protected monomer was subjected to anionic polymerization in tetrahydrofuran at −60°C in the presence of LiCl, using 1,1-diphenylhexyllithium as initiator. The molecular weight of the polymer could thus be controlled and a narrow molecular weight distribution obtained. The protecting group, 1-(acetoxy)ethyl, could be easily eliminated (by quenching the polymerization reaction with methanol and water) to generate poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (poly(HEMA)). Block copolymers were also prepared by the sequential anionic polymerization of MMA and 2 or styrene and 2 . They possess narrow molecular weight distributions, and controlled molecular weights and compositions. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 36: 1865–1872, 1998  相似文献

Poly(2‐(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PDEAEMA) homopolymers with low polydispersities were synthesized by reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) radical polymerization. The performances of two chain transfer agents, 2‐cyanoprop‐2‐yl dithiobenzoate and 4‐cyanopentanic acid dithiobenzoate (CPADB), were compared. It was found that the polymerization of 2‐(diethylamino) ethyl methylacrylate was under good control in the presence of CPADB with 4,4′‐azobis(4‐cyanopentanoic acid) (ACPA) as initiator in 1,4‐dioxane at 70 °C. The kinetic behaviors were investigated under different CPADB/ACPA molar ratios. A long polymerization inhibition period was observed at high [CPADB]/[ACPA] ratio. The influences of [CPADB]/[ACPA] ratio, monomer/[CPADB] ratio, and temperature were studied with respect to monomer conversion, molecular weight control, and polydispersity index (PDI). The PDI decreased from 1.21 to 1.12, as the CPADB/ACPA molar ratio changed from 2 to 10. The molecular weight of PDEAEMA could be controlled by monomer/CPADB molar ratio. The control over MW and PDI was improved as the temperature increased from 60 to 70 °C; however, an additional increase to 80 °C led to a loss of control. Using PDEAEMA macroRAFT agent, pH/thermo double‐responsive block copolymers of PDEAEMA and poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PDEAEMA‐b‐PNIPAM) with narrow polydispersity (PDI, 1.24) were synthesized. The lower critical solution temperature of PDEAEMA‐b‐PNIPAM block copolymer depended on the environmental pH. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An in situ dielectric measurement for atactic poly(methyl methacrylate) (at‐PMMA) was performed under high‐pressure CO2 under various pressures and temperatures. The at‐PMMA has the acetate side group with a large dipole moment. In the glassy state, a local relaxation process (β‐process) can be observed using dielectric measurement. In the rubbery state, the micro‐Brownian motion of main chain (α‐process) occurs, and the β‐process changes into αβ‐process coordinated with the α‐process. The dielectric loss (ε″) spectrum of at‐PMMA in the glassy state is asymmetric because of the density fluctuation for the amorphous structure. The loss peak frequency shifted to higher frequencies, and the relaxation strength increased with increasing CO2 pressure. In the glassy state, the shape of ε″ spectrum became more symmetric with increasing CO2 pressure. These show that the molecular mobility enhanced by the plasticization effect of CO2 allows the dipolar side groups in the high‐density region to contribute to the relaxation process. We also found that the apparent activation energy decreased under high‐pressure CO2. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 43: 2951–2962, 2005  相似文献
