In situ infrared spectroscopy has been used to investigate the adsorption of a range of simple aromatic carboxylic acids from aqueous solution to metal oxides. Thin films of TiO2, ZrO2, Al2O3 and Ta2O5 were prepared by evaporation of aqueous sols on single reflection ZnSe prisms. Benzoic acid adsorbed very strongly to ZrO2, in a bridging bidentate fashion, but showed only weak adsorption to TiO2 and Ta2O5. Substituted aromatic carboxylic acids; salicylic, phthalic and thiosalicylic, were found to adsorb to each metal oxide. Salicylic and phthalic acids adsorbed to the metal oxides via bidentate interactions, involving coordination through both carboxylate and substituent groups. Thiosalicylic acid adsorbed to the metal oxides as a bridging bidentate carboxylate with no coordination through the thiol substituent group.  相似文献

The aim of the work discussed in this paper was to characterize adsorbed self-assembled monolayers on different metal oxide substrates with angle-resolved XPS measurements. The substrates used were silicon wafers (100) coated with 300 nm Al, Ta, or Ti. They were coated with acids by immersing them in an ethanol solution. The orientation of long-chain organic acids adsorbed on metal oxides has been successfully identified by angle-resolved XPS. On Al, Ta, and Ti substrates, C11 chains are orientated in the right manner, i.e. with the phosphonic group at the bottom and the thiophene group on top. The orientations of the C2 and C6 chains are not clear. The thickness of the layers could be obtained by using Tougaard nanostructure analysis, and it shows monolayers. A model of the chemical bonds between the phosphonic group and the metal could be developed from the chemical shift. For titanium, all three P–O bonds bind to the metal substrate, whereas only the P–O(H) bond binds to the metal on aluminium and tantalum.  相似文献

This report provides detailed experimental results of thermal and surface characterization on untreated and surface‐treated halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) obtained from two geographic areas. Surface characterization techniques, including XPS and time‐of‐flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF‐SIMS) were used. ToF‐SIMS surface analysis experiments were performed with both atomic and cluster ion beams. Higher ion yields and more high‐mass ions were obtained with the cluster ion beams. Static ToF‐SIMS spectra were analyzed with principal component analysis (PCA). Morphological diversities were observed in the samples although they mainly contained tubular structures. Thermogravimetric data indicated that aqueous hydrogen peroxide solution could remove inorganic salt impurities, such as alkali metal salts. The amount of grafting of benzalkonium chloride of HNT surface was determined by thermogravimetic analysis. PCA of ToF‐SIMS spectra could distinguish the samples mined from different geographical locations as well as among surface‐treated and untreated samples. Electropolymerization of pyrrole‐3‐acetic acid was performed by cyclic voltammetry on titanium and Ti90Al6V4 substrates with the aim of developing a multilayer structure for applications in advanced biomaterials. The polymeric films obtained were characterized by both XPS and time‐of‐flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF‐SIMS). Information on the poly(pyrrole‐3‐acetic acid) (PPy‐3‐acetic) surface structure was achieved by a detailed XPS analysis of C 1s and N 1s signals. The number of COOH groups was quantified by XPS coupled to a chemical derivatization reaction in which esterification with trifluoroethanol was exploited so that the presence of fluorine (or the CF3 component in C 1s spectra) could be used as a marker for COOH groups. As a result, it was found that more than 90% of the monomer units along PPy‐3‐acetic chains bear carboxylic functionalities, of which 60% are protonated and 40% are present as carboxylate groups. Some decarboxylation occurs with film ageing. The PPy‐3‐acetic films were also investigated by ToF‐SIMS in the negative ion mode, thus obtaining, for the first time, interesting information on the structure of the top surface layers of a polymer belonging to the polypyrrole family. In particular, clusters of peaks related to PPy‐3‐acetic oligomers were detected and the decarboxylation phenomenon on top of the polymer surface was confirmed. The adsorption of a range of organic molecules from toluene onto the oxidized surface of magnetron‐sputtered aluminium metal is studied using sessile drop water contact angle measurements. Molecules with different head group functionalities and various chain lengths are considered, including alkyl carboxylic acids, alkyl phosphonic acids, alkyl amines, alkyl trimethoxysilanes, alkyl trichlorosilanes and epoxy alkanes. Alkyl phosphonic and carboxylic acids are identified as readily forming the most well‐packed monolayers on the aluminium surface, whereas the others adsorb less well and the chlorosilanes polymerize as a result of combination with moisture to form a thick deposit. The high‐adsorption‐density monolayers of alkyl phosphonic and carboxylic acids were studied using polarization modulation infrared reflection–absorption spectroscopy (PM‐IRRAS) and x‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS): PM‐IRRAS reveals relatively poorer ordering of the C10 alkyl carboxylic acid monolayer compared with that formed from the phosphonic acid, and XPS data suggest that this is likely to relate to a lower ability to displace preadsorbed volatile organic compounds. The efficient trapping of photogenerated thioaldehydes with functional shelf‐stable nitrile oxides in a 1,3‐dipolar cycloaddition is a novel and versatile photochemical strategy for polymer end‐group functionalization and surface modification under mild and equimolar conditions. The modular ligation in solution was followed in detail by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI‐MS). X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was employed to analyze the functionalized surfaces, whereas time‐of‐flight secondary‐ion mass spectrometry (ToF‐SIMS) confirmed the spatial control of the surface functionalization using a micropatterned shadow mask. Polymer brushes were grown from the surface in a spatially confined regime by surface‐initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI‐ATRP) as confirmed by TOF‐SIMS, XPS as well as ellipsometry.  相似文献

Subphthalocyaninatoboron complexes with six long‐chain alkylthio substituents in their periphery are applicable for the formation of self‐assembled monolayers (SAMs) on gold. Such films are prepared from solution with the axially chlorido‐substituted derivatives and characterised by near‐edge X‐ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and time‐of‐flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF‐SIMS). The results are in accord with the formation of SAMs assembled by the chemisorption of both covalently bound thiolate‐type as well as coordinatively bound thioether units. The adsorbate molecules adopt an essentially flat adsorption geometry on the substrate, resembling a suction pad on a surface.  相似文献

Adsorption studies of monosubstituted benzene molecules with various functional groups on doped lanthanum chromite/cyclohexane surface have been performed. The results from the adsorption study can be used in selecting appropriate anchoring groups on the dispersant. It was found that high amount of O relative lo La on the LaCrO3 surface correlated with high amounts of adsorbed benzoic acid. Increase in the La content relative to the O on the powder surface increased the amount of adsorbed benzylamine. The high amount of benzoic acid adsorbed on 20% Ca-doped lanthanum chromite powder (Al)lated well with good colloidal stability caused by a carboxylic acid containing dispersant. Rheology experiments showed that a low degree of agglomeration is obtained using only a small amount of the carboxylic acid containing dispersant (Hypermer LP1). Etectrophoretic mobility measurements in water of this powder coated with the LP1 dispersant indicated electrosteric stabilisation.  相似文献

Polypropylene (PP) is used in many automotive applications where good paint adhesion is of primary importance. PP is widely known for its low surface energy which impacts negatively on its adhesion strength. PP surfaces were modified using a new industrial surface‐treatment process known as the Accelerated Thermo‐molecular adhesion Process (ATmaP). ATmaP grafts functional groups to the polymer surface derived from an atomised and vapourised nitrogen‐containing coupling agent. The surface properties and adhesion performance of PP samples treated using the ATmaP process and two different flame processes were compared using XPS, time‐of‐flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF‐SIMS) and mechanical testing (pull‐up tests). The latter showed that ATmaP improved adhesion strength significantly in comparison with conventional flame treatments. XPS showed an increase in oxygen and nitrogen concentration on the surface of ATmaP‐treated samples compared with untreated and flame‐treated samples. Principal components analysis (PCA) of the ToF‐SIMS data revealed the major phenomena occurring during the surface treatment of PP samples. Early stage events, including the chain scission of the PP backbone chain and the subsequent reaction of these chains with the surrounding air, are captured by the first principal component (PC1). The increase in the concentration of NO surface functional groups resulting from ATmaP treatment is captured by the second principal component (PC2). Nitrilotris(methylene)triphosphonic acid (NP) is a technologically important molecule that has been used for years as a corrosion inhibitor and/or adhesion promoter on aluminum and other metal surfaces. However, to the best of our knowledge, the detailed surface characterization of NP adsorbed on aluminum, or on any other surface, has not been reported. Herein, we report an X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy and time‐of‐flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF‐SIMS) analysis of a series of untreated and NP‐coated aluminum substrates that were exposed to the downstream products of a fluoroalkane + oxygen plasma for different amounts of time (from 0 to 20 s). As indicated by P 2p, N 1s, Al 2p, O 1s, and F 1s narrow scans, even a 4‐s plasma treatment significantly damages the NP protective layer and converts the native aluminum oxide into aluminum oxyfluoride. Heat treatment of the fluorine plasma‐treated samples in the air substantially converts the aluminum oxyfluoride back to aluminum oxide, while similar heating under vacuum results in little change to the materials. A slow loss of fluorine from the samples occurs over the course of weeks when they are stored in the air. A ToF‐SIMS analysis reveals sets of signals that are consistent with no surface treatment, NP treatment, or fluorine plasma treatment. A principal component analysis of the negative ion ToF‐SIMS spectra from the samples shows the expected differentiation of the samples. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A series of low‐density polyethylene (LDPE) surfaces, chemically modified using a number of oxidative techniques employed for adhesion enhancement (pretreatments), have been studied by time‐of‐flight (ToF) SIMS and XPS. The methods consisted of corona discharge, flame, electrochemical, chromic acid, acid dichromate and acid permanganate treatment. All except flame treatment were performed under mild and fairly severe conditions to yield a range of surface chemistries. The XPS analysis, using high energy resolution and a refined approach to C 1s curve‐fitting, provided some new insights into the quantitative assessment of the type and concentration of functional groups. Both positive and negative ion ToF‐SIMS spectra were obtained at high mass resolution. The oxygen‐containing fragments were identified by accurate mass analysis and subjected to a detailed comparison with the XPS results. No convincing relative intensity correlations could be identified that would allow particular secondary ion fragments to be associated strongly with particular functional groups (in this multi‐functional surface situation). Inorganic residues resulting from wet chemical treatments were also investigated and here the two techniques were found to be more complementary. Copyright © 2003 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The adsorption of a commercial adhesive and two of its major components—an amine curing agent [2,4‐toluene diisocyanate urone (TDI urone)] and an adhesive prepolymer resin [diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA)]—on a hydrated aluminium surface and the hydrated surface coated with γ‐glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPS) has been investigated by x‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and time‐of‐flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF‐SIMS). The study of TDI urone adsorption indicated that adsorption was of the chemisorption type, and a specific interaction involving this molecule and the GPS immobilized on the hydrated aluminium surface was identified. From XPS and ToF‐SIMS data it was found that the types of interaction of the curing agent with the bare substrate were of the donor–acceptor type. Study of the DGEBA adsorption showed different‐shaped isotherms for the bare and the GPS‐coated substrates. It was found that the typical Langmuir isotherm type was obtained for the GPS‐coated substrate whereas no adsorption plateau was observed for the bare substrate within the concentration range studied. This resulted from a change in the conformation of the DGEBA molecule on the substrate when the concentration of DGEBA solution was increased. The bonding of DGEBA with both types of substrates was assumed to be via acid–base interactions (i.e. donor–acceptor interactions). Adsorption of the commercial adhesive on the hydrated surfaces was of BET Type IV form, rather than the simple monolayer adsorption isotherm (Langmuir type). This indicates multilayer adsorption, presumably in the pores of the hydrated substrate, as a result of a process analogous to adsorption condensation. Generally, dynamic secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) has been mainly used as one of the most powerful tools for inorganic mass analysis. On the other hand, an Ar gas cluster ion beam (GCIB) has been developed and spread as a processing tool for surface flattening and also a projectile for time‐of‐flight (ToF) SIMS. In this study, we newly introduced an Ar‐GCIB as a primary ion source to a commercially available dynamic SIMS apparatus, and investigated mass spectra of amino acid films (such as Arginine and Glycine) and polymer films (Polyethylene: PE and Polypropylene: PP) as organic model samples. As a result, each characteristic fragment peak indicating the original molecular organic structure was observed in the acquired mass spectra. In addition, their own molecular ions of the amino acids were also clearly observed. Mass spectra of PE/PP blended‐polymer films acquired using Ar‐GCIB‐dynamic SIMS could be identified between pure PE and PE:PP = 1:3 mixture by applying principal component analysis (PCA).  相似文献

As one of the simplest volatile organic compounds, glyoxal and its oxidation products were considered to be important precursors to aqueous secondary organic aerosol formation. Herein, we analyzed products from glyoxal oxidation by hydrogen peroxide in dry and liquid samples using time‐of‐flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF‐SIMS). ToF‐SIMS spectra and spectral principal component analysis (PCA) were used to investigate surface oxidation products. Dry samples were prepared on clean silicon wafers. Liquid samples consisting of glyoxal and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) were introduced to a vacuum compatible microfluidic reactor prior to UV illumination or dark aging followed by in situ liquid SIMS analysis. A number of reaction products were observed in both dry and liquid samples; different oligomers and carboxylic acids could be formed depending on reaction conditions. In addition, hydrolyzed products were observed in the liquid samples, but not in the dry samples. Although dry samples reveal some products of the aqueous process, they are not fully representative as results from those of the aqueous samples. Our findings suggest that the ability to characterize the liquid surface reaction products provides more realistic information of the reaction products associated with aqueous secondary organic aerosol formation in the atmosphere. Meanwhile, the high mass resolution spectra from the dry sample SIMS measurement are helpful to identify oxidation products in the liquid samples.  相似文献

Immiscible polymer systems are known to form various kinds of phase‐separated structures capable of producing self‐assembled patterns at the surface. In this study, different surface characterization methods were utilized to study the surface morphology and composition produced after annealing thin polymer films. Two different SIMS techniques—static time‐of‐flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF‐SIMS) and dynamic nano‐SIMS—were used, complemented by x‐ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Thin films (spin‐coated onto silicon wafers) of polystyrene (PS)–poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) symmetric blends and diblock copolymers of similar molecular weight were investigated. Surface enrichment by PS was found on all as‐cast samples. The samples were annealed at 160 °C for different time periods, after which the blend and the copolymer films exhibited opposite behaviour as seen by ToF‐SIMS and XPS. The annealed blend surface presented an increase in the PMMA concentration whereas that of copolymers showed a decrease in PMMA concentration compared with the as‐cast sample. For blends, the nano‐SIMS as well as AFM images revealed the formation of phase‐separated domains at the surface. The composition information obtained from ToF‐SIMS and XPS, as well as the surface mapping by nano‐SIMS and AFM, allowed us to conclude that PS formed phase separated droplet‐like domains on a thin PMMA matrix on annealing. The three‐dimensional nano‐SIMS images showed that the PS droplets were supported inside a rim of PMMA and that these droplets continued from the surface like columnar rods into the film until the substrate interface. In the case of annealed copolymer samples, the AFM images revealed topographical features resembling droplet‐like domains on the surface but there was no phase difference between the domains and the matrix. In the case of copolymers, owing to the covalent bonding between the blocks, complete phase separation was not possible. The three‐dimensional nano‐SIMS images showed domain structures in the form of striations inside the film, which were not continuous until the substrate interface. Information from the different techniques was required to gain an accurate view of the surface composition and topographical changes that have occurred under the annealing conditions. A novel bromoquinolinium reagent, i.e. 1‐(3‐aminopropyl)‐3‐bromoquinolinium bromide (APBQ), was synthesized for the analysis of carboxylic acids. A simple and practical precolumn derivatization procedure using the APBQ in RP chromatography and MS (HPLC‐MS) has been developed using bile acids and free fatty acids, as the representative carboxylic acids in biological samples. The APBQ efficiently reacted with carboxylic acids at 60°C for 60 min in the presence of N,N‐dicyclohexylcarbodiimide and pyridine as the activation reagents. Because the APBQ possesses a bromine atom in the structure, the identification of a series of carboxylic acids was easily achieved due to the characteristic bromine isotope pattern in the mass spectra. The APBQ also has a quaternary amine structure, thus the positively charged derivatives are predominate for the highly sensitive detection of carboxylic acids. The APBQ was successfully applied to the selective determination of biological carboxylic acids in human plasma. The bile acids (chenodeoxycholic acid and deoxycholic acid) and several saturated (stearic acid and palmitic acid) and unsaturated free fatty acids (oleic acid and linoleic acid) were reasonably determined by HPLC‐MS under the proposed procedure. Based on the results of analyses of human plasma and saliva, the proposed procedure using APBQ seems to be applicable for the qualitative and quantitative analyses of a series of carboxylic acids in biological samples.  相似文献

Static secondary ion mass spectrometry was used to study the surface reactions and lateral distributions of fatty carboxylic acid molecules on sputter‐deposited gold and aluminium surfaces, as well as commercial aluminium–magnesium alloy surfaces, cleaned using UV/ozone. Films were prepared by spin coating dilute solutions of stearic acid and lauric acid onto the above surfaces. These carboxylic acids were shown to react with the oxide formed on the aluminium and aluminum–magnesium alloy substrates to produce a deprotonated acid anion, stabilized by the formation of a magnesium soap on the aluminium–magnesium alloy surface. Secondary ion imaging of stearic acid films revealed the formation of C‐type crystals. Copyright © 2003 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Ozone was used to oxidize graphene oxides (GO) to generate ozonated graphene oxides (OGO) with higher oxygen-containing functional groups. The as-prepared OGO was characterized by Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Based on the results of potentiometric acid-base titrations, the total carboxylic acid concentration on OGO surface was calculated to be 3.92 mmol/g, which was much higher than that on GO surface. The results of adsorption experiments indicated that the adsorption capacities of OGO for Sr(II) and U(VI) removal were improved significantly after ozonization.  相似文献

Hydrophobicity, lubrication and anticorrosion properties of steel substrates have been obtained by a deposition of thin film (i.e. by mechanochemical treatment) at room conditions. Stearic acid and paraffin were chosen as reactive molecules. Different abrasive powders were selected to generate active sites on the treated surfaces for adsorption of the reactive molecules and then, the results were compared. The surfaces were analyzed by reflection-absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS). The results emphasize that, a thick layer of mixed stearic acid/paraffin was deposited onto the metallic surface after the treatment. After hexane rinsing we could only detect a very thin layer of oriented stearic acid molecules chemically adsorbed onto the metallic surface and which engages strong interactions with it. Whereas, RAIRS only provides molecular analysis, the XPS technique was complementary for discriminating the different surfaces. It was possible to show differences in thickness as well as in coverage according to the size and shape of abrasive particles. Furthermore, we could conclude that deposit layer is not uniform. Defects were always present and were dependent on abrasive powders used. Then wettability was assessed as a way to test the homogeneity of thin films generated by the mechanochemical treatment. In agreement with theoretical data, receding contact angle was very dependent on the defects in the deposited film. If holes or aggregates were increased in the deposit layer, the receding contact angle was decreased while advancing contact angles and equilibrium contact angles remained constant. A very important point for technological applications was that the homogeneity of the deposited film was governed by abrasive powder involved in mechanochemical treatment and contact angle values were a direct measurement of the homogeneity of surfaces generated by mechanochemical treatment.  相似文献
