The solubility parameter of sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) was investigated. SPEEK exhibited two solubility parameters, 26.4 and 35.7 J1/2 cm?3/2, and was similar in that respect to Nafion, which has two cohesive energy densities. The theoretical solubility parameter of SPEEK, 26.1 J1/2 cm?3/2, was determined with van Krevelen's method and corresponded to the experimental value. The theoretical volume fraction of SPEEK in the solvent was determined with Flory's equation. The trend of the theoretical volume fraction of SPEEK fit quite well with the experimental results when the solubility parameter of the solvent was lower than 35 J1/2 cm?3/2. A significant deviation of the experimental volume fraction of SPEEK with the high solubility parameter resulted from the presence of sulfonic acid groups. SPEEK in the sodium form exhibited similar solvent absorption in comparison with SPEEK in the acid form. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 44: 3128–3134, 2006  相似文献

The improvement in the oxygen‐barrier properties of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) by orientation and heat setting was examined. Orientation was carried out at 65 °C by constrained uniaxial stretching to a draw ratio of about 4. Heat setting was performed at temperatures from 90 to 160 °C with the specimen taut. Orientation decreased the permeability of PET to almost one‐third that of the unoriented, amorphous polymer because of decreases in both the diffusion coefficient and the solubility coefficient. The proposed two‐phase model for oriented PET consisted of a permeable isotropic amorphous phase (density = 1.335 g/cm3) with ethylene linkages predominately in the gauche conformation and an impermeable oriented phase (density = 1.38 g/cm3) with ethylene linkages that had transformed from the gauche conformation to the trans conformation during stretching. Chain segments in the trans conformation did not possess crystalline order; instead, they were viewed as forming an ordered amorphous phase. Crystallization by heat setting above the glass‐transition temperature did not dramatically affect the permeability. However, a decrease in the diffusion coefficient, offset by an increase in the solubility coefficient, indicated that crystallization affected the barrier properties of the permeable amorphous phase. Analysis of the barrier data, assuming a two‐phase model with variable density for both the permeable and impermeable phases, revealed that the impermeable phase density increased during crystallization, approaching a value of 1.476 g/cm3. This value is consistent with previous measurements of the density of the defective crystalline phase in PET. The density of the permeable amorphous phase decreased concurrently to about 1.325 g/cm3, indicating the appearance of additional free volume.

Thermal analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy characterizations were performed on three ternary blend systems that comprise poly(4‐vinyl phenol) (PVPh) and any two of the three homologous aryl polyesters [poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), poly(trimethylene terephthalate) (PTT), and poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT)]. Although PVPh is miscible with any one of the polyesters in forming a binary blend system, miscibility in ternary systems by introducing one more polymer of different structures to the blend system is not always expected. However, this study concludes that miscibility does exist in all these three ternary blends of all compositions investigated. Reasons and factors for such behavior were probed. Quantitative interactions in the ternary blend system were also estimated. The overall interaction energy density (B) by analysis of melting point depression for the PBT/PVPh/PET ternary blend system led to a negative value (B = −5.74 cal/cm3). Similarly, Tg‐composition analyses were performed on two other ternary blend systems, PET/PVPh/PTT and PTT/PVPh/PBT. Comparison of the qualitative results showed that the interaction energy densities in the other two ternary blend systems are similarly negative and comparable to the PBT/PVPh/PET ternary blend system. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results also support the qualitative findings among these three ternary blend systems. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We employed high‐resolution 13C cross‐polarization/magic‐angle‐spinning/dipolar‐decoupling NMR spectroscopy to investigate the miscibility and phase behavior of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC)/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) blends. The spin–lattice relaxation times of protons in both the laboratory and rotating frames [T1(H) and T(H), respectively] were indirectly measured through 13C resonances. The T1(H) results indicate that the blends are homogeneous, at least on a scale of 200–300 Å, confirming the miscibility of the system from a differential scanning calorimetry study in terms of the replacement of the glass‐transition‐temperature feature. The single decay and composition‐dependent T(H) values for each blend further demonstrate that the spin diffusion among all protons in the blends averages out the whole relaxation process; therefore, the blends are homogeneous on a scale of 18–20 Å. The microcrystallinity of PVC disappears upon blending with PMMA, indicating intimate mixing of the two polymers. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The Simha and Somcynsky (S–S) statistical thermodynamics theory was used to compute the solubility parameters as a function of temperature and pressure [δ = δ(T, P)], for a series of polymer melts. The characteristic scaling parameters required for this task, P*, T*, and V*, were extracted from the pressure–temperature–volume (PVT) data. To determine the potential polymer–polymer miscibility, the dependence of δ versus T (at ambient pressure) was computed for 17 polymers. Close proximity of the δ versus T curves for four miscible polymer pairs: PPE/PS, PS/PVME, and PC/PMMA signaled the usefulness of this approach. It is noteworthy, that the tabulated solubility parameters (derived from the solution data under ambient conditions) propounded the immiscibility of the PVC/PVAc pair. The computed values of δ also suggested miscibility for polymer pairs of unknown miscibility, namely PPE/PVC, PPE/PVAc, and PET/PSF. In recognizing the limitations of the solubility parameter approach (the omission of several thermodynamic contributions), these preliminary results are auspicious because they indicate a new route for estimating the miscibility of any polymeric material at a given temperature and pressure. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The solubility, diffusivity, and permeability of ethylbenzene in poly(1‐trimethylsilyl‐1‐propyne) (PTMSP) at 35, 45 and 55 °C were determined using kinetic gravimetric sorption and pure gas permeation methods. Ethylbenzene solubility in PTMSP was well described by the generalized dual‐mode model with χ = 0.39 ± 0.02, b = 15 ± 1, and CH = 45 ± 4 cm3 (STP)/cm3 PTMSP at 35 °C. Ethylbenzene solubility increased with decreasing temperature; the enthalpy of sorption at infinite dilution was −40 ± 7 kJ/mol and was essentially equal to the enthalpy change upon condensation of pure ethylbenzene. The diffusion coefficient of ethylbenzene in PTMSP decreased with increasing concentration and decreasing temperature. Activation energies of diffusion were very low at infinite dilution and increased with increasing concentration to a maximum value of 50 ± 10 kJ/mol at the highest concentration explored. PTMSP permeability to ethylbenzene decreased with increasing concentration. The permeability estimated from solubility and diffusivity data obtained by kinetic gravimetric sorption was in good agreement with permeability determined from direct permeation experiments. Permeability after exposure to a high ethylbenzene partial pressure was significantly higher than that observed before the sample was exposed to a higher partial pressure of ethylbenzene. Nitrogen permeability coefficients were also determined from pure gas experiments. Nitrogen and ethylbenzene permeability coefficients increased with decreasing temperature, and infinite dilution activation energies of permeation for N2 and ethylbenzene were −5.5 ± 0.5 kJ/mol and −74 ± 11 kJ/mol, respectively. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A novel hyperbranched poly(glycidol) (HPG) was prepared and characterized. The synthesized HPG was used as a substrate of a polymer electrolyte. The ionic conductivity of a blend of HPG, polyurethane (PU), and salt was studied. The ionic conductivity of HPG/PU/LiClO4 was about 6.6 × 10?6 S · cm?1 at 20 °C and 6.3 × 10?4 S · cm?1 at 60 °C. The results indicated that HPG showed higher solubility for salt than linear polyether when both had the same [O]/[Li+] molar ratio. The main reason was that more cavities and a lower degree of chain entanglement in HPG resulted in a lower glass‐transition temperature and were beneficial for decreasing the aggregation of salt or enhancing the ionic conductivity. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A new phosphinated acetoxybenzoic acid, 1‐(4‐acetoxyphenyl)‐1‐(4‐carboxylphenyl)‐1‐(6‐oxido‐6H‐dibenz<c,e><1,2> oxaphosphorin‐6‐yl)ethane (3), was prepared by a three‐step procedure. Phosphinated copolyesters based on the acidolysis and polycondensation of (3) with poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) were prepared. The crystallinity of copolyesters decreased gradually with the content of (3), as shown in wide‐angle X‐ray diffractograms and differential scanning calorimetry thermograms. Dynamic mechanical analysis and thermal mechanical analysis show Tg increased with the content of (3). UL‐94 flame retardant test shows that the flame resistance of PET was enhanced with the content of (3), and a copolyester with UL‐94 V‐0 grade can be achieved with a phosphorus content as low as 1.43 wt %. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The isothermal crystallization kinetics of poly(trimethylene terephthalate) (PTT) have been investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized light microscopy (PLM). Enthalpy data of exotherm from isothermal crystallization were analyzed using the Avrami theory. The average value of the Avrami exponent, n, is about 2.8. From the melt, PTT crystallizes according to a spherulite morphology. The spherulite growth rate and the overall crystallization rate depend on crystallization temperature. The increase in the spherulitic radius was examined by polarized light microscopy. Using values of transport parameters common to many polymers (U* = 1500 cal/mol, T= Tg − 30 °C) together with experimentally determined values of T (248 °C) and Tg (44 °C), the nucleation parameter, kg, for PTT was determined. On the basis of secondary nucleation analyses, a transition between regimes III and II was found in the vicinity of 194 °C (ΔT ≅ 54 K). The ratio of kg of these two regimes is 2.1, which is very close to 2.0 as predicted by the Lauritzen–Hoffman theory. The lateral surface‐free energy, σ = 10.89 erg/cm2 and the fold surface‐free energy, σe = 56.64 erg/cm2 were determined. The latter leads to a work of chain‐folding, q = 4.80 kcal/mol folds, which is comparable to PET and PBT previously reported. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. New cyclic oligomers of the copolymer of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and poly(ethylene isophthalate) (PEI) were isolated and identified. A condensation polymerization was carried out at a high temperature, and the solid‐state polymerization that followed yielded the high molecular weight polymer. The oligomers were extracted from the high molecular weight PET–PEI copolymer and separated with preparative high performance liquid chromatography techniques. Their chemical structures and properties were analyzed and determined by 1H NMR, differential scanning calorimetry, and mass spectroscopy. The oligomers observed at early retention times were a cyclic dimer and cyclic trimers and consisted of [GT]3, [GI]2, [GI]3, [GT]2[GI]1, and [GT]1[GI]2. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new type of single-ion conductor with fixed cation was synthesized by spontaneous anionic polymerization of 4-vinylpyridine in the presence of short polyethylene oxide ( PEO ) chains as alkylating agents. These comblike polymers have low Tgs and are amorphous with the shorter PEO s. Their conductivities are unaffected by the nature of the anion ( Br , ClO 4, and tosylate) and are controlled by the free volume and the mobility of the pendant cation. By comparison of the results at constant free volume, it is shown that the charge density decreases with the increasing length of pendant PEO demonstrating that PEO acts only as a plasticizing agent. Best conductivity results (σ = 10−5 S cm−1 at 60°C) are obtained with PEO side chains of molecular weight 350. With this sample, the conductivity in the presence of various amounts of added salt (LiTFSI) was studied. A best value of 10−4 S cm−1 at 60°C is obtained with a molar ratio EO/Li of 10. It is shown that, over the range of examined concentrations (0.2–1.3 mol Li kg−1), the reduced conductivity σr/c increases linearly with increasing salt concentration showing that the ion mobility increases continuously. Such behavior is quite unusual since in this concentration range a maximum is generally observed with PEO systems. To interpret this result and by analogy with the behavior of this type of polymer in solution, it is proposed that the conformation of these polymers in the solid state is segregated with the P4VP skeleton more or less confined inside the dense coils surrounded by the PEO side chains. Under the influence of the increasing salt concentration, this microphase separation vanishes progressively: The LiTFSI salt exchanges with the tosylate anions and acts as a miscibility improver agent. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Poly(phenylacetylene)s containing trifluoromethyl groups on their benzene rings were synthesized, and gas permeation behaviors of their films were examined. Permeability coefficients for O2 and N2, diffusion selectivity (Do2/DN2) and solubility selectivity (SO2/SN2) were estimated. The gas permeability of polymer films were found to be enhanced remarkably with introduction of trifluoromethyl groups into the polymers: poly[2,4,5-tris(trifluoromethyl)phenylacetylene], Po2 = 7.8 × 10?8 [cm3 (STP) cm cm?2 s?1 cm Hg?1], Po2/PN2 = 2.1. The relationship between the polymer structures and their gas permeability was discussed.  相似文献

Even though poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) is immiscible with both poly(l ‐lactide) (PLLA) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), this article shows a working route to obtain miscible blends based on these polymers. The miscibility of these polymers has been analyzed using the solubility parameter approach to choose the proper ratios of the constituents of the blend. Then, PVA has been grafted with l ‐lactide (LLA) through ring‐opening polymerization to obtain a poly(vinyl alcohol)‐graft‐poly(l ‐lactide) (PVA‐g‐PLLA) brush copolymer with 82 mol % LLA according to 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopies. PEO has been blended with the PVA‐g‐PLLA brush copolymer and the miscibility of the system has been analyzed by DSC, FTIR, OM, and SEM. The particular architecture of the blends results in DSC traces lacking clearly distinguishable glass transitions that have been explained considering self‐concentration effects (Lodge and McLeish) and the associated concentration fluctuations. Fortunately, the FTIR analysis is conclusive regarding the miscibility and the specific interactions in these systems. Melting point depression analysis suggests that interactions of intermediate strength and PLOM and SEM reveal homogeneous morphologies for the PEO/PVA‐g‐PLLA blends. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. A new series of segmented copolymers were synthesized from poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) oligomers and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) by a two‐step solution polymerization reaction. PET oligomers were obtained by glycolysis depolymerization. Structural features were defined by infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The copolymer composition was calculated via 1H NMR spectroscopy. The content of soft PEG segments was higher than that of hard PET segments. A single glass‐transition temperature was detected for all the synthesized segmented copolymers. This observation was found to be independent of the initial PET‐to‐PEG molar ratio. The molar masses of the copolymers were determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 42: 4448–4457, 2004  相似文献

Polymerizations of 1‐naphthylacetylene (1‐NA) and 9‐anthrylacetylene (9‐AA) by various transition metal catalysts were studied, and properties of the polymers were clarified. 1‐NA polymerized with WCl6‐based catalysts to offer dark purple polymers in good yield. Especially, a binary catalyst composed of WCl6 and Ph3Bi gave a polymer with high molecular weight (Mw = 140×103) and sufficient solubility in common solvents. The use of Mo and Rh catalysts, in contrast, resulted in the formation of insoluble red poly(1‐NA)s. 9‐AA gave insoluble polymers by both WCl6‐ and MoCl5‐based catalysts in moderate to good yields. Copolymerization of 9‐AA with 1‐NA by WCl6–Ph3Bi provided a soluble copolymer which exhibited the largest third‐order nonlinear optical susceptibilities (χ(3)(−3ω; ω, ω, ω) = 40×10−12) among all the substituted polyacetylenes synthesized so far. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The miscibility of blends of semicrystalline poly(vinylidene fluoride)(PVF2) and poly(vinyl methyl ketone) (PVMK) along with surface characterization were investigated using the inverse gas chromatography method (IGC), over a range of blend compositions and temperatures. Three chemically different families, alkanes, acetates, and alcohols, were utilized for this study. The values of the PVF2‐PVMK interaction parameters were found to be slightly positive for most of the solutes used, although some degree of miscibility was found at all compositions. Miscibility was greatest at a 50:50 w/w composition of the blend. The interaction parameters obtained from IGC are in excellent agreement with those obtained using calorimetry on the same blends. The calculated molar heat of sorption of alkanes, acetates, and alcohols into the blend layer reveal the impact of the combination of dispersive and hydrogen bonding forces on the interaction of solutes with the blend's backbone. The dispersive component of the surface energy was found to range from 18.70–64.30 mJ/m2 in the temperature range of 82–163 °C. A comparison of the blend's surface energy with that of mercury and other polymers is given. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci B: Polym Phys 38: 1155–1166, 2000  相似文献

Miscibility of blends consisting of poly(vinyl methyl ether) (PVME) and poly(styreneco-2-vinylnaphthalene) [P(S-co-2VN)] was investigated by means of Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and thermal analysis. Copolymers containing 21, 51, and 84 wt % of styrene were synthesized by radical polymerization. Based on optical clarity and glass transition temperatures, it was shown that the miscibility in P(S-co-2VN)/PVME blends is largely affected by compositions of the copolymers as well as concentrations of the blend. From the FT-IR results, the relative intensity at 1100 cm?1 peak of COCH3 band of PVME and the position of naphthyl ring of 2VN were sensitive to the miscibility of the blends. It was observed that blends of PVME with P(S-co-2VN) of 84 wt % styrene or P(S-co-2VN) of 51 wt % styrene are miscible over the entire concentration ranges of the blends. Blends of PVME with P(S-co-2VN) containing 21 wt % of styrene are immiscible below 65 wt % PVME. In the miscible P(S-co-2VN)/PVME blends, there was observed a large shift in the naphthyl frequency at a characteristic wavelength of 748 cm?1. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

The comparative studies on the miscibility and phase behavior between the blends of linear and star‐shaped poly(2‐methyl‐2‐oxazoline) with poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) were carried out in this work. The linear poly(2‐methyl‐2‐oxazoline) was synthesized by the ring opening polymerization of 2‐methyl‐2‐oxazoline in the presence of methyl p‐toluenesulfonate (MeOTs) whereas the star‐shaped poly(2‐methyl‐2‐oxazoline) was synthesized with octa(3‐iodopropyl) polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane [(IC3H6)8Si8O12, OipPOSS] as an octafunctional initiator. The polymers with different topological structures were characterized by means of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. It is found that the star‐shaped poly(2‐methyl‐2‐oxazoline) was miscible with poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF), which was evidenced by single glass‐transition temperature behavior and the equilibrium melting‐point depression. Nonetheless, the blends of linear poly(2‐methyl‐2‐oxazoline) with PVDF were phase‐separated. The difference in miscibility was ascribed to the topological effect of PMOx macromolecules on the miscibility. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A miscible homopolymer–copolymer pair viz., poly(ethyl methacrylate) (PEMA)–poly(styrene‐co‐butyl acrylate) (SBA) is reported. The miscibility has been studied using differential scanning calorimetry. While 1 : 1 (w/w) blends with SBA containing 23 and 34 wt % styrene (ST) become miscible only above 225 and 185 °C respectively indicating existence of UCST, those with SBA containing 63 wt % ST is miscible at the lowest mixing temperature (i.e., Tg's) but become immiscible when heated at ca 250 °C indicating the existence of LCST. Miscibility for blends with SBA of still higher ST content could not be determined by this method because of the closeness of the Tg's of the components. The miscibility window at 230 °C refers to the two copolymer compositions of which one with the lower ST content is near the UCST, while the other with the higher ST content is near the LCST. Using these compositions and the mean field theory binary interaction parameters between the monomer residues have been calculated. The values are χST‐BA = 0.087 and χEMA‐BA = 0.013 at 230 °C. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci B: Polym Phys 38: 369–375, 2000  相似文献
