The first microbeam synchrotron X‐ray fluorescence (µ‐SXRF) beamline using continuous synchrotron radiation from Siam Photon Source has been constructed and commissioned as of August 2011. Utilizing an X‐ray capillary half‐lens allows synchrotron radiation from a 1.4 T bending magnet of the 1.2 GeV electron storage ring to be focused from a few millimeters‐sized beam to a micrometer‐sized beam. This beamline was originally designed for deep X‐ray lithography (DXL) and was one of the first two operational beamlines at this facility. A modification has been carried out to the beamline in order to additionally enable µ‐SXRF and synchrotron X‐ray powder diffraction (SXPD). Modifications included the installation of a new chamber housing a Si(111) crystal to extract 8 keV synchrotron radiation from the white X‐ray beam (for SXPD), a fixed aperture and three gate valves. Two end‐stations incorporating optics and detectors for µ‐SXRF and SXPD have then been installed immediately upstream of the DXL station, with the three techniques sharing available beam time. The µ‐SXRF station utilizes a polycapillary half‐lens for X‐ray focusing. This optic focuses X‐ray white beam from 5 mm × 2 mm (H × V) at the entrance of the lens down to a diameter of 100 µm FWHM measured at a sample position 22 mm (lens focal point) downstream of the lens exit. The end‐station also incorporates an XYZ motorized sample holder with 25 mm travel per axis, a 5× ZEISS microscope objective with 5 mm × 5 mm field of view coupled to a CCD camera looking to the sample, and an AMPTEK single‐element Si (PIN) solid‐state detector for fluorescence detection. A graphic user interface data acquisition program using the LabVIEW platform has also been developed in‐house to generate a series of single‐column data which are compatible with available XRF data‐processing software. Finally, to test the performance of the µ‐SXRF beamline, an elemental surface profile has been obtained for a piece of ancient pottery from the Ban Chiang archaeological site, a UNESCO heritage site. It was found that the newly constructed µ‐SXRF technique was able to clearly distinguish the distribution of different elements on the specimen.  相似文献

A microfocus X‐ray fluorescence spectroscopy beamline (BL‐16) at the Indian synchrotron radiation facility Indus‐2 has been constructed with an experimental emphasis on environmental, archaeological, biomedical and material science applications involving heavy metal speciation and their localization. The beamline offers a combination of different analytical probes, e.g. X‐ray fluorescence mapping, X‐ray microspectroscopy and total‐external‐reflection fluorescence characterization. The beamline is installed on a bending‐magnet source with a working X‐ray energy range of 4–20 keV, enabling it to excite K‐edges of all elements from S to Nb and L‐edges from Ag to U. The optics of the beamline comprises of a double‐crystal monochromator with Si(111) symmetric and asymmetric crystals and a pair of Kirkpatrick–Baez focusing mirrors. This paper describes the performance of the beamline and its capabilities with examples of measured results.  相似文献

BioCARS, a NIH‐supported national user facility for macromolecular time‐resolved X‐ray crystallography at the Advanced Photon Source (APS), has recently completed commissioning of an upgraded undulator‐based beamline optimized for single‐shot laser‐pump X‐ray‐probe measurements with time resolution as short as 100 ps. The source consists of two in‐line undulators with periods of 23 and 27 mm that together provide high‐flux pink‐beam capability at 12 keV as well as first‐harmonic coverage from 6.8 to 19 keV. A high‐heat‐load chopper reduces the average power load on downstream components, thereby preserving the surface figure of a Kirkpatrick–Baez mirror system capable of focusing the X‐ray beam to a spot size of 90 µm horizontal by 20 µm vertical. A high‐speed chopper isolates single X‐ray pulses at 1 kHz in both hybrid and 24‐bunch modes of the APS storage ring. In hybrid mode each isolated X‐ray pulse delivers up to ~4 × 1010 photons to the sample, thereby achieving a time‐averaged flux approaching that of fourth‐generation X‐FEL sources. A new high‐power picosecond laser system delivers pulses tunable over the wavelength range 450–2000 nm. These pulses are synchronized to the storage‐ring RF clock with long‐term stability better than 10 ps RMS. Monochromatic experimental capability with Biosafety Level 3 certification has been retained.  相似文献

Hydroxyapatite (HA) is largely used as bone graft; it seems to be the most promising synthetic implant material, mainly because of its excellent biocompatibility. The crystallinity, particle and pore size of HA are important characteristics and can be modified by decreasing basic structural form below 100 nm and have evoked a great amount of attention for improving prevention, diagnosis, and disease treatment, besides improving bone repair through the biodegradation of the material. The aim of this study was to investigate bone mineral content in bone samples with nanohydroxyapatite and HA spheres, specially its spatial distribution on bone microarchitecture. Circular bone defects were made in both tibiae of 12 White New Zeland adult rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) and were divided randomly into five groups – blood clot (control group), sintered HA, non‐sintered HA, sintered nanoHA and non‐sintered nanoHA – all materials in spherical shape, to smooth handling and accommodation of the surgical bed, and to minimize inflammatory response. The rabbits were euthanatized according to the experimental period of 1 and 4 weeks after surgery. The samples were evaluated by polarized microscopy as well as X‐ray microfluorescence in order to account the bone mineral content bone‐implant interfaces, through synchrotron radiation. Our results revealed greater newly formed bone area in the non‐sintered materials and control groups, and the used technique showed that the amount of calcium of new bone was consistent with both mature bone and HA spheres. In conclusion, the present findings suggest that HA‐based biomaterials are biocompatible, promote osteoconduction and favored bone repair. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Convenient x‐ray fluorescent spectrometry was developed for the determination of V, Cr, Co, Ni, Ge and Sb in plastic materials. The calibrating standards were prepared by casting of polyurethane or polyester including a xylene solution of organometallic compounds as a standard. The calibrating disk had a homogeneous elemental distribution and excellent durability. The calibration curves of six elements showed a good linearity of less than 50 mass ppm for V and Ni, 100 mass ppm for Co and Ge, 200 mass ppm for Cr, and 400 mass ppm for Sb. The lower limits of detection (3σ) of the present method were 0.19 mass ppm for V, 0.42 for Cr, 0.24 for Co, 0.18 for Ni, 0.066 for Ge, and 2.1 for Sb. The proposed method has been applied to several different industrial plastics. The quantitative results are in good agreement with those obtained by the AAS method and x‐ray fluorescent spectrometry using the fundamental parameter calculation method. A capillary discharge pumped soft x‐ray laser operating at 46.9 nm on the 3p–3s transition of the Ne‐like Ar has been realized by pumping the active medium with a relatively slow current pulse (dI/dt ≈ 6 · 1011 A/s). In order to study the role of the ablation in the production of the laser effect, the intensity of the amplified 46.9 nm line has been investigated using the same pumping current pulses in the plastic (polyacetal) and ceramic (Al2O3). We showed that the ablation of the capillary walls is unfavorable both for the compression and stability of the plasma and consequently for the soft x‐ray laser production. The amplification and lasing effects are observed only in the ceramic channel. The measurements of the line intensity at 46.9 nm showed the lasing with a gain‐length product of ≈ 9, a laser pulse energy of ≈ 5 μJ, a pulse duration of 1.3 ns and a beam divergence of ≈ 3.5 mrad. In addition, effect of the scaling of the time of lasing with the initial plasma diameter was demonstrated experimentally and compared with a one‐dimensional MHD model.  相似文献

In situ visualization of the distribution and behaviour of water in a polymer electrolyte fuel cell during power generation has been demonstrated using a synchrotron X‐ray imaging technique. Images were recorded using a CCD detector combined with a scintillator (Gd2O2S:Tb) and relay lens system, which were placed at 2.0 m or 2.5 m from the fuel cell. The images were measured continuously before and during power generation, and data on cell performance was recorded. The change of water distribution during power generation was obtained from X‐ray images normalized with the initial state of the fuel cell. Compared with other techniques for visualizing the water in fuel cells, this technique enables the water distribution and behaviour in the fuel cell to be visualized during power generation with high spatial resolution. In particular, the effects of the specifications of the gas diffusion layer on the cathode side of the fuel cell on the distribution of water were efficiently identified. This is a very powerful technique for investigating the mechanism of water flow within the fuel cell and the relationship between water behaviour and cell performance.  相似文献

In this paper the choice between bending magnets and insertion devices as sample illuminators for a hard X‐ray full‐field microscope is investigated. An optimized bending‐magnet beamline design is presented. Its imaging speed is very competitive with the performance of similar microscopes installed currently at insertion‐device beamlines. The fact that imaging X‐ray microscopes can accept a large phase space makes them very well suited to the output characteristics of bending magnets which are often a plentiful and paid‐for resource. There exist opportunities at all synchrotron light sources to take advantage of this finding to build bending‐magnet beamlines that are dedicated to transmission X‐ray microscope facilities. It is expected that demand for such facilities will increase as three‐dimensional tomography becomes routine and advanced techniques such as mosaic tomography and XANES tomography (taking three‐dimensional tomograms at different energies to highlight elemental and chemical differences) become more widespread.  相似文献

Owing to its extreme sensitivity, quantitative mapping of elemental distributions via X‐ray fluorescence microscopy (XFM) has become a key microanalytical technique. The recent realisation of scanning X‐ray diffraction microscopy (SXDM) meanwhile provides an avenue for quantitative super‐resolved ultra‐structural visualization. The similarity of their experimental geometries indicates excellent prospects for simultaneous acquisition. Here, in both step‐ and fly‐scanning modes, robust, simultaneous XFM‐SXDM is demonstrated.  相似文献

In this paper, the effects of inner diameters on the Z‐pinch plasma of capillary discharge soft x‐ray laser were investigated with the 3.2 mm and 4.0 mm inner diameter alumina capillaries. The intensities of the laser emitted from the 3.2 mm and 4.0 mm inner diameter alumina capillaries were measured under different initial pressures. To understand the underlying physics of the experimental measurements, the Z‐pinch plasma simulations had been conducted with a one‐dimensional cylindrical symmetry Lagrangian magneto‐hydrodynamics (MHD) code. The parametric studies of Z‐pinch plasma, such as the electron temperature, the electron density and the Ne‐like Ar ion density, were performed with the MHD code. With the experimental and the simulated results, the discussions had been conducted on the Z‐pinch plasma of Ne‐like Ar 46.9 nm laser with the 3.2 mm and 4.0 mm inner diameter alumina capillaries. The analysis had been made on the difference of the gain coefficients under the optimum pressures with both capillaries. Then, the effects of inner diameters on the optimum pressure and the pressure domain were analyzed. (© 2015 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

Recently, a radically new synchrotron radiation‐based elemental imaging approach for the analysis of biological model organisms and single cells in their natural in vivo state was introduced. The methodology combines optical tweezers (OT) technology for non‐contact laser‐based sample manipulation with synchrotron radiation confocal X‐ray fluorescence (XRF) microimaging for the first time at ESRF‐ID13. The optical manipulation possibilities and limitations of biological model organisms, the OT setup developments for XRF imaging and the confocal XRF‐related challenges are reported. In general, the applicability of the OT‐based setup is extended with the aim of introducing the OT XRF methodology in all research fields where highly sensitive in vivo multi‐elemental analysis is of relevance at the (sub)micrometre spatial resolution level.  相似文献

Synchrotron radiation analysis was used to investigate the metal content of tree rings collected from paper birch, Betula papyrifera Marsh, on transects downwind from two metal smelters (nickel and copper). Individual trees reflected changes in ring metal content with time, which may be presumed to represent changes in local metal bioavailability. However, between‐tree variations were large and no statistically significant differences in metal content as a function of time were found within or between sites. Although concentrations of both total and exchangeable copper and nickel in the soil increased with proximity to the respective smelter, this pattern was reflected only in the nickel content of rings near the nickel smelter; copper content did not vary with distance from either smelter. The sites did differ with respect to lead, manganese and zinc content of the rings, which may be related to pH. In conclusion, the variability between trees at each site suggests that dendroanalysis is a poor method for evaluating metal exposure at a large (site) scale. Tree ring metal content may be used to evaluate the metal uptake by individual trees but metal mobility in the stem makes it difficult to establish a reliable chronology. The majority of the beamlines at the Brazilian Synchrotron Light Source Laboratory (LNLS) use radiation produced in the storage‐ring bending magnets and are therefore currently limited in the flux that can be used in the harder part of the X‐ray spectrum (above ~10 keV). A 4 T superconducting multipolar wiggler (SCW) was recently installed at LNLS in order to improve the photon flux above 10 keV and fulfill the demands set by the materials science community. A new multi‐purpose beamline was then installed at the LNLS using the SCW as a photon source. The XDS is a flexible beamline operating in the energy range between 5 and 30 keV, designed to perform experiments using absorption, diffraction and scattering techniques. Most of the work performed at the XDS beamline concentrates on X‐ray absorption spectroscopy at energies above 18 keV and high‐resolution diffraction experiments. More recently, new setups and photon‐hungry experiments such as total X‐ray scattering, X‐ray diffraction under high pressures, resonant X‐ray emission spectroscopy, among others, have started to become routine at XDS. Here, the XDS beamline characteristics, performance and a few new experimental possibilities are described.  相似文献

Combined measurements of X‐ray absorption and fluorescence have been performed in jets of pure and diluted argon gas to demonstrate the feasibility of using X‐ray fluorescence to study turbulent mixing. Measurements show a strong correspondence between the absorption and fluorescence measurements for high argon concentration. For lower argon concentration, fluorescence provides a much more robust measurement than absorption. The measurements agree well with the accepted behavior of turbulent jets.  相似文献

An X‐ray fluorescence flow cytometer that can determine the total metal content of single cells has been developed. Capillary action or pressure was used to load cells into hydrophilic or hydrophobic capillaries, respectively. Once loaded, the cells were transported at a fixed vertical velocity past a focused X‐ray beam. X‐ray fluorescence was then used to determine the mass of metal in each cell. By making single‐cell measurements, the population heterogeneity for metals in the µM to mM concentration range on fL sample volumes can be directly measured, a measurement that is difficult using most analytical methods. This approach has been used to determine the metal composition of 936 individual bovine red blood cells (bRBC), 31 individual 3T3 mouse fibroblasts (NIH3T3) and 18 Saccharomyces cerevisiae (yeast) cells with an average measurement frequency of ~4 cells min?1. These data show evidence for surprisingly broad metal distributions. Details of the device design, data analysis and opportunities for further sensitivity improvement are described.  相似文献

Third‐generation synchrotron radiation sources pose difficult challenges for energy‐dispersive detectors for XAFS because of their count rate limitations. One solution to this problem is the bent crystal Laue analyzer (BCLA), which removes most of the undesired scatter and fluorescence before it reaches the detector, effectively eliminating detector saturation due to background. In this paper experimental measurements of BCLA performance in conjunction with a 13‐element germanium detector, and a quantitative analysis of the signal‐to‐noise improvement of BCLAs are presented. The performance of BCLAs are compared with filters and slits.  相似文献

Samples with non‐planar surfaces present challenges for X‐ray fluorescence imaging analysis. Here, approximations are derived to describe the modulation of fluorescence signals by surface angles and topography, and suggestions are made for reducing this effect. A correction procedure is developed that is effective for trace element analysis of samples having a uniform matrix, and requires only a fluorescence map from a single detector. This procedure is applied to fluorescence maps from an incised gypsum tablet.  相似文献

A new system of slits called `spiderweb slits' have been developed for depth‐resolved powder or polycrystalline X‐ray diffraction measurements. The slits act on diffracted X‐rays to select a particular gauge volume of sample, while absorbing diffracted X‐rays from outside of this volume. Although the slit geometry is to some extent similar to that of previously developed conical slits or spiral slits, this new design has advantages over the previous ones in use for complex heterogeneous materials and in situ and operando diffraction measurements. For example, the slits can measure a majority of any diffraction cone for any polycrystalline material, over a continuous range of diffraction angles, and work for X‐ray energies of tens to hundreds of kiloelectronvolts. The design is generated and optimized using ray‐tracing simulations, and fabricated through laser micromachining. The first prototype was successfully tested at the X17A beamline at the National Synchrotron Light Source, and shows similar performance to simulations, demonstrating gauge volume selection for standard powders, for all diffraction peaks over angles of 2–10°. A similar, but improved, design will be implemented at the X‐ray Powder Diffraction beamline at the National Synchrotron Light Source II.  相似文献

A measurement of the K‐shell fluorescence yield of silicon is undertaken in which identified sources of systematic errors in previous measurements are reduced or eliminated. This enables a stringent test of the only two sets of theoretical predictions available for atomic numbers less than 18. Our result ωK = 0.0495 ± 0.0015 is very slightly lower than the non‐relativistic Hartree‐Fock‐Slater (HFS) prediction of 0.0514. This stringent test of the HFS predictions helps to refine the fundamental parameter database of the X‐ray fluorescence analysis technique, whose importance for light elements is increasing. Our work indicates the need for new theoretical calculations of K‐shell fluorescence yields for these elements. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
