The title radical (1) is generated in the gas-phase by collisional neutralization of carbonyl-protonated oxolan-3-one. A 1.5% fraction of 1 does not dissociate and is detected following reionization as survivor ions. The major dissociation of 1 (approximately 56%) occurs as loss of the hydroxyl H atom forming oxolan-3-one (2). The competing ring cleavages by O[bond]C-2 and C-4[bond]C-5 bond dissociations combined account for approximately 42% of dissociation and result in the formation of formaldehyde and 2-hydroxyallyl radical. Additional ring-cleavage dissociations of 1 resulting in the formation of C(2)H(3)O and C(2)H(4)O cannot be explained as occurring competitively on the doublet ground (X) electronic state of 1, but are energetically accessible from the A and higher electronic states accessed by vertical electron transfer. Exothermic protonation of 2 also produces 3-oxo-(1H)-oxolanium cation (3(+)) which upon collisional neutralization gives hypervalent 3-oxo-(1H)-oxolanium radical (3). The latter dissociates spontaneously by ring opening and expulsion of hydroxy radical. Experiment and calculations suggest that carbohydrate radicals incorporating the 3-hydroxyoxolan-3-yl motif will prefer ring-cleavage dissociations at low internal energies or upon photoexcitation by absorbing light at approximately 590 and approximately 400 nm.  相似文献

Collisional neutralization of several isomeric C(4)H(7)O(2) cations is used to generate radicals that share some structural features with transient species that are thought to be produced by radiolysis of 2-deoxyribose. The title 2-hydroxyoxolan-2-yl radical (1) undergoes nearly complete dissociation when produced by femtosecond electron transfer from thermal organic electron donors dimethyl disulfide and N,N-dimethylaniline in the gas phase. Product analysis, isotope labeling ((2)H and (18)O), and potential energy surface mapping by ab initio calculations at the G2(MP2) and B3-PMP2 levels of theory and in combination with Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus (RRKM) kinetic calculations are used to assign the major and some minor pathways for 1 dissociations. The major (approximately 90%) pathway is initiated by cleavage of the ring C-5[bond]O bond in 1 and proceeds to form ethylene and *CH(2)COOH as main products, whereas loss of a hydrogen atom forms 4-hexenoic acid as a minor product. Loss of the OH hydrogen atom forming butyrolactone (2, approximately 9%) and cleavage of the C-3[bond]C-4 bonds (<1%) in 1 are other minor pathways. The major source of excitation in 1 is by Franck-Condon effects that cause substantial differences between the adiabatic and vertical ionization of 1 (5.40 and 6.89 eV, respectively) and vertical recombination in the precursor ion 1(+) (4.46 eV). (+)NR(+) mass spectra distinguish radical 1 from isomeric radicals 2-oxo-(1H)oxolanium (3), 1,3-dioxan-2-yl (9), and 1,3-dioxan-4-yl (10) that were generated separately from their corresponding ion precursors.  相似文献

Ammonium radicals derived from protonated beta-alanine N-methyl amide (BANMA) were generated by femtosecond collisional electron transfer to gas-phase cations prepared by chemical ionization and electrospray. Regardless of the mode of precursor ion preparation, the radicals underwent complete dissociation on the time scale of 5.15 micros. Deuterium isotope labeling and product analysis pointed out several competitive and convergent dissociation pathways that were not completely resolved by experiment. Ab initio calculations, which were extrapolated up to the CCSD(T)/6-311++G(3df,2p) level of theory, provided the proton affinity and gas-phase basicity of BANMA as PA = 971 kJ mol-1 and GB = 932 kJ mol-1 to form the most stable ion structure 1c+ in which the protonated ammonium group was internally solvated by hydrogen bonding to the amide carbonyl. Ion 1c+ was calculated to have an adiabatic recombination energy of 3.33 eV to form ammonium radical 1c*. The potential energy surface for competitive and consecutive isomerizations and dissociations of 1c* was investigated at correlated levels of theory and used for Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus (RRKM) calculations. RRKM unimolecular rate constants suggested that dissociations starting from the ground electronic state of radical 1c* were dominated by loss of an ammonium hydrogen atom. In contrast, dissociations starting from the B excited state were predicted to proceed by reversible isomerization to an aminoketyl radical (1f*). The latter can in part dissociate by N-Calpha bond cleavage leading to the loss of the amide methyl group. This indicates that apparently competitive dissociations observed for larger amide and peptide radicals, such as backbone cleavages and losses of side-chain groups, may originate from different electronic states and proceed on different potential energy surfaces.  相似文献

We report a combined experimental and computational study of the proline effect in model dipeptides Pro-Gly and Gly-Pro. Gas-phase protonated peptide ions were discharged by glancing collisions with potassium or cesium atoms at 3 keV collision energies, and the peptide radical intermediates and their dissociation products were analyzed following collisional ionization to anions. The charge reversal (+CR-) mass spectra of (Pro-Gly + H)+(1a+) and (Gly-Pro + H)+ (2a+) showed dramatic differences and thus provided a sensitive probe of ion structure. Whereas 1a+ completely dissociated upon charge inversion, 2a+ gave a nondissociated anion as the most abundant product. Ab initio and density functional theory calculations provided structures and vertical recombination energies (REvert) for 1a+ and 2a+. The recombination energies, REvert = 3.07 and 3.36 eV for 1a+ and 2a+, respectively, were lower than the alkali metal ionization energies and indicated that the collisional electron transfer to the peptide ions was endoergic. Radical 1a* was found to exist in a very shallow local energy minimum, with transition state energies for loss and migration of H indicating very facile dissociation. In contrast, radical 2a* was calculated to spontaneously isomerize upon electron capture to a stable dihydroxycarbinyl isomer (2e*) that can undergo consecutive and competitive isomerizations by proline ring opening and intramolecular hydrogen atom transfers to yield stable radical isomers. Radical 2e* and its stable isomers were calculated to have substantial electron affinities and thus can form the stable anions that were observed in the +CR- mass spectra. The calculated TS energies and RRKM kinetic analysis indicated that peptide N-C alpha bond dissociations compete with pyrrolidine ring openings triggered by radical sites at both the N-terminal and C-terminal sides of the proline residue. Open-ring intermediates were found in which loss of an H atom was energetically preferred over backbone dissociations. This provided an explanation for the proline effect causing low incidence of electron capture dissociations of N-C alpha bonds adjacent to proline residues in tryptic peptides and also for some peculiar behavior of proline-containing protein cation-radicals.  相似文献

We report the first preparation of a stable aminothioketyl radical, CH(3)C(?)(SH)NHCH(3) (1), by fast electron transfer to protonated thioacetamide in the gas phase. The radical was characterized by neutralization-reionization mass spectrometry and ab initio calculations at high levels of theory. The unimolecular dissociations of 1 were elucidated with deuterium-labeled radicals CH(3)C(?)(SD)NHCH(3) (1a), CH(3)C(?)(SH)NDCH(3) (1b), CH(3)C(?)(SH)NHCD(3) (1c), and CD(3)C(?)(SH)NHCH(3) (1d). The main dissociations of 1 were a highly specific loss of the thiol H atom and a specific loss of the N-methyl group, which were competitive on the potential energy surface of the ground electronic state of the radical. RRKM calculations on the CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVTZ potential energy surface indicated that the cleavage of the S-H bond in 1 dominated at low internal energies, E(int) < 232 kJ mol(-1). The cleavage of the N-CH(3) bond was calculated to prevail at higher internal energies. Loss of the thiol hydrogen atom can be further enhanced by dissociations originating from the B excited state of 1 when accessed by vertical electron transfer. Hydrogen atom addition to the thioamide sulfur atom is calculated to have an extremely low activation energy that may enable the thioamide group to function as a hydrogen atom trap in peptide radicals. The electronic properties and reactivity of the simple aminothioketyl radical reported here may be extrapolated and applied to elucidate the chemistry of thioxopeptide radicals and cation radicals of interest to protein structure studies.  相似文献

Arginine amide radicals are generated by femtosecond electron transfer to protonated arginine amide cations in the gas phase. A fraction of the arginine radicals formed (2-amino-5-dihydroguanid-1'-yl-pentanamide, 1H) is stable on the 6.7 micros time scale and is detected after collisional reionization. The main dissociation of 1H is loss of a guanidine molecule from the side chain followed by consecutive dissociations of the 2-aminopentanamid-5-yl radical intermediate. Intramolecular hydrogen atom transfer from the guanidinium group onto the amide group is not observed. These results are explained by ab initio and density functional theory calculations of dissociation and transition state energies. Loss of guanidine from 1H is calculated to require a transition state energy of 68 kJ mol(-)(1), which is substantially lower than that for hydrogen atom migration from the guanidine group. The loss of guanidine competes with the reverse migration of the arginine alpha-hydrogen atom onto the guanidyl radical. RRKM calculations of dissociation kinetics predict the loss of guanidine to account for >95% of 1H dissociations. The anomalous behavior of protonated arginine amide upon electron transfer provides an insight into electron capture and transfer dissociations of peptide cations containing arginine residues as charge carriers. The absence of efficient hydrogen atom transfer from charge-reduced arginine onto sterically proximate amide group blocks one of the current mechanisms for electron capture dissociation. Conversely, charge-reduced guanidine groups in arginine residues may function as radical traps and induce side-chain dissociations. In light of the current findings, backbone dissociations in arginine-containing peptides are predicted to involve excited electronic states and proceed by the amide superbase mechanism that involves electron capture in an amide pi* orbital, which is stabilized by through-space coulomb interaction with the remote charge carriers.  相似文献

Single and double photoionization spectra of formaldehyde have been measured at 40.81 and 48.37 eV photon energy and the spectrum of the doubly charged cation has been interpreted using high-level electronic structure calculations. The adiabatic double-ionization energy is determined as 31.7+/-0.25 eV and the vertical ionization energy is 33 eV. The five lowest excited electronic states are identified and located. The potential-energy surfaces of the accessible states explain the lack of stable H2CO2+ dications and the lack of vibrational structure. The experimental double-ionization spectrum can be decomposed into two distinct contributions, one from direct photoionization and the second from indirect double photoionization by an inner-valence shell Auger effect.  相似文献

Experimental quantum yields of the photolysis of formaldehyde at lambda > 310 nm are combined with absolute and relative rate calculations for the molecular elimination H2CO --> H2 + CO (1), the bond fission H2CO --> H + HCO (2), and the intramolecular hydrogen abstraction H2CO --> H ... HCO --> H2 + CO (3) taking place in the electronic ground state. Temperature and pressure dependencies of the quantum yields are analyzed with the goal to achieve consistency between experiment and modeling. Two wavelength ranges with considerably different properties are considered: 340-360 nm, where channel 1 competes with collisional deactivation of excited molecules, and 310-340 nm, which is dominated by the competition between the formation of radical and molecular products. The close relation between photolysis and pyrolysis of formaldehyde, such as analyzed for the pyrolysis in the companion paper, is documented and an internally consistent treatment of the two reaction systems is provided. The quantum yields are modeled and represented in analytical form such that values outside the available experimental range can be predicted to some extent.  相似文献

The effects on the title reaction of collision energy (E(col)) and five H(2)CO(+) vibrational modes have been studied over a center-of-mass E(col) range from 0.1 to 2.3 eV. Electronic structure and Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus calculations were used to examine properties of various complexes and transition states that might be important. Only the hydrogen abstraction (HA) product channel is observed, and despite being exoergic, HA has an appearance energy of approximately 0.4 eV, consistent with a transition state found in the electronic structure calculations. A precursor complex-mediated mechanism might possibly be involved at very low E(col), but the dominant mechanism is direct over the entire E(col) range. The magnitude of the HA cross section is strongly, and mode specifically affected by H(2)CO(+) vibrational excitation, however, vibrational energy has no effect on the appearance energy.  相似文献

This short review outlines the tandem mass spectrometric methods for the generation and analysis of transient nucleobase radicals relevant to deoxyribonucleic acid and ribonucleic acid damage. Radical hydrogen atom adducts to uracil, adenine, cytosine and N-methylcytosine were generated by femtosecond electron transfer to the corresponding gas-phase cations in fast beams at 8 keV kinetic energy. Radical unimolecular dissociations were monitored by product analysis following collisional ionization to cations or anions using neutralization-reionization mass spectrometry. The radical energetics and dissociation kinetics were further analyzed by mapping the potential energy surfaces by high-level ab initio calculations in combination with Rice-Remsberger-Kassel-Marcus calculations of unimolecular rate constants. This first- principles-based approach allows one to model radical dissociations occurring from doublet ground electronic states of radical intermediates, assign reaction mechanisms and derive quantitative branching ratios for dissociation channels that are in agreement with experiments. Theoretical analysis also provides distinction between radical dissociations occurring on the ground and excited electronic state potential energy surfaces. Specific characterization of excited state dissociations of nucleobase and other polyatomic radicals remains a challenging topic for both experimentalists and computational chemists.  相似文献

For the purpose of investigation of the electronic structures of functionalized pyrroles with potential biological activity the electronic structures and ionization spectra of S-cis-(Z)-2-(2-formylethenyl)pyrrole (FP) were calculated by the propagator quantum chemical method. The calculations were performed using the third-order algebraic diagrammatic construction method (ADC(3)) for one-particle Green´s function (electronic propagator) and the 6–31G** basis set. Going from FP (possessing the intramolecular hydrogen bond H?O) to its conformation FPR (without H?O bonding), the O1s-ionization energy and the ionization energy of the σ-type lone electron pair orbital of the O atom decrease by ~0.2 eV, which is a consequence of stopping the electron density transfer from the O atom. A strong electron density transfer through the hydrogen bond from the O atom to the NH group occurs in the nitrogen core level ionization spectrum as evidenced by a lower N1s-ionization energy of FP (by ~0.7 eV ) compared to that of FPR. The valence shell ionization spectra of FP and FPR calculated using the ADC(3) method are characterized by a high density of the satellite states. The results obtained indicate that the electronic structures of the compounds of the considered class are characterized by pronounced effects of electron correlation.  相似文献

Vertical and adiabatic excitation energies of the lowest (2)A(') excited state in the water-hydroxyl complex have been determined using coupled cluster, multireference configuration interaction, multireference perturbation theory, and density-functional methods. A significant redshift of about 0.4 eV in the vertical excitation energy of the complex compared to that of the hydroxyl radical monomer is found with the coupled cluster calculations validating previous results. Electronic excitation leads to a structure with near-equal sharing of the hydroxyl hydrogen by both oxygen atoms and a concomitantly large redshift of the adiabatic excitation energy of approximately 1 eV relative to the vertical excitation energy. The combination of redshifts ensures that the electronic transition in the complex lies well outside the equivalent excitation in the hydroxyl radical monomer. The complex is approximately five times more strongly bound in the excited state than in the ground state.  相似文献

Electron capture dissociation was studied with tetradecapeptides and pentadecapeptides that were capped at N-termini with a 2-(4'-carboxypyrid-2'-yl)-4-carboxamide group (pepy), e.g., pepy-AEQLLQEEQLLQEL-NH(2), pepy-AQEFGEQGQKALKQL-NH(2), and pepy-AQEGSEQAQKFFKQL-NH(2). Doubly and triply protonated peptide cations underwent efficient electron capture in the ion-cyclotron resonance cell to yield charge-reduced species. However, the electron capture was not accompanied by backbone dissociations. When the peptide ions were preheated by absorption of infrared photons close to the dissociation threshold, subsequent electron capture triggered ion dissociations near the remote C-terminus forming mainly (b(11-14) + 1)(+)* fragment ions that were analogous to those produced by infrared multiphoton dissociation alone. Ab initio calculations indicated that the N-1 and N-1' positions in the pepy moiety had topical gas-phase basicities (GB = 923 kJ mol(-1)) that were greater than those of backbone amide groups. Hence, pepy was a likely protonation site in the doubly and triply charged ions. Electron capture in the protonated pepy moiety produced the ground electronic state of the charge-reduced cation-radical with a topical recombination energy, RE = 5.43-5.46 eV, which was greater than that of protonated peptide residues. The hydrogen atom in the charge-reduced pepy moiety was bound by >160 kJ mol(-1), which exceeded the hydrogen atom affinity of the backbone amide groups (21-41 kJ mol(-1)). Thus, the pepy moiety functioned as a stable electron and hydrogen atom trap that did not trigger radical-type dissociations in the peptide backbone that are typical of ECD. Instead, the internal energy gained by electron capture was redistributed over the peptide moiety, and when combined with additional IR excitation, induced proton-driven ion dissociations which occurred at sites that were remote from the site of electron capture. This example of a spin-remote fragmentation provided the first clear-cut experimental example of an ergodic dissociation upon ECD.  相似文献

photoelectron-photoion coincidence spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations have been used to investigate the dissociation kinetics of the benzene chromium tricarbonyl ion, BzCr(CO)3+ (Bz = C6H6). The dissociation of the BzCr(CO)3+ ion proceeds by the sequential loss of three CO and benzene ligands. The first and third CO and the benzene loss reactions were associated with metastable precursor ions (lifetimes in the microsecond range). By simulating the resulting asymmetric time-of-flight peak shapes and breakdown diagram, the 0 K appearance energies of the four product ions were determined to be 8.33 +/- 0.05, 8.93 +/- 0.05, 9.97 +/- 0.06, and 11.71 +/- 0.06 eV, respectively. Combined with the ionization energy of BzCr(CO)3, 7.30 +/- 0.05 eV, the three successive Cr-CO bond energies in the BzCr(CO)3+ were found to alternate, with values of 1.03 +/- 0.05, 0.60 +/- 0.05, and 1.04 +/- 0.05 eV, respectively, and the Bz-Cr bond energy in BzCr+ is 1.74 +/- 0.05 eV, a trend confirmed by the density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Using the heats of formation of the fully dissociated products, C6H6, Cr+, and CO, the 298 K heats of formation the ionic BzCr(CO)n+ (n = 03) species were determined. By scaling the DFT calculated bond energies for the neutral molecules, the heats of formation of the neutral BzCr(CO)n (n = 03) were also obtained.  相似文献

The photochemistry of mass selected CO(2) (-)(H2O)(m), m=2-40 cluster anions is investigated using 266 nm photofragment spectroscopy and theoretical calculations. Similar to the previous 355 nm experiment [Habteyes et al., Chem. Phys. Lett. 424, 268 (2006)], the fragmentation at 266 nm yields two types of anionic products: O(-)(H2O)(m-k) (core-dissociation products) and CO(2) (-)(H2O)(m-k) (solvent-evaporation products). Despite the same product types, different electronic transitions and dissociation mechanisms are implicated at 355 and 266 nm. The 355 nm dissociation is initiated by excitation to the first excited electronic state of the CO(2) (-) cluster core, the 1 (2)B(1)(2A") state, and proceeds via a glancing Renner-Teller intersection with the ground electronic state at a linear geometry. The 266 nm dissociation involves the second excited electronic state of CO(2) (-), the 2 (2)A(1)(2A') state, which exhibits a conical intersection with the 3 (2)B(2)(A') state at a bent geometry. The asymptotic O(-) based products are believed to be formed via this 3 (2)B(2)(A') state. By analyzing the fragmentation results, the bond dissociation energy of CO(2) (-) to O(-)+CO in hydrated clusters (m> or =20) is estimated as 2.49 eV, compared to 3.46 eV for bare CO(2) (-). The enthalpy of evaporation of one water molecule from asymptotically large CO(2) (-)(H(2)O)(m) clusters is determined to be 0.466+/-0.001 eV (45.0+/-0.1 kJ/mol). This result compares very favorably with the heat of evaporation of bulk water, 0.456 eV (43.98 kJ/mol).  相似文献

The thermal dissociation of formaldehyde proceeds on three channels, the molecular-elimination channel H2CO --> H2 + CO (1), the radical-forming bond-fission channel H2CO --> H + HCO (2), and the bond-fission-initiated, intramolecular-hydrogen-abstraction channel H2CO --> H...HCO --> H2 + CO (3) which also forms molecular products. The kinetics of this system in the low-pressure range of the unimolecular reaction is shown to be governed by a subtle superposition of collisional channel coupling to be treated by solving a master equation, of rotational channel switching accessible through ab initio calculations of the potential as well as spectroscopic and photophysical determinations of the threshold energies and channel branching above the threshold energy for radical formation which can be characterized through formaldehyde photolysis quantum yields as well as classical trajectory calculations. On the basis of the available information, the rate coefficients for the formation of molecular and radical fragments are analyzed and extrapolated over wide ranges of conditions. The modeled rate coefficients in the low-pressure range of the reaction (neglecting tunneling) over the range 1400-3200 K in the bath-gas Ar in this way are represented by k0,Mol/[Ar] approximately 9.4 x 10(-9) exp(-33,140 K/T) cm3 molecule(-1) s(-1) and k0,Rad/[Ar] approximately 6.2 x 10(-9) exp(-36,980 K/T) cm3 molecule(-1) s(-1). The corresponding values for the bath-gas Kr, on which the analysis relies in particular, are k0,Mol/[Kr] approximately 7.7 x 10(-9) exp(-33,110 K/T) and k0,Rad/[Kr] approximately 4.1 x 10(-9) exp(-36 910 K/T) cm3 molecule(-1) s(-1). While the threshold energy E0,2 for channels 2 and 3 is taken from spectroscopic measurements, the threshold energy E0,1 for channel 1 is fitted on the basis of experimental ratios k0,Rad/k0,Mol in combination with photolysis quantum yields. The derived value of E0,1(1) = 81.2 (+/-0.9) kcal mol(-1) is in good agreement with results from recent ab initio calculations, 81.9 (+/-0.3) kcal mol(-1), but is higher than earlier results derived from photophysical experiments, 79.2 (+/-0.8) kcal mol(-1). Rate coefficients for the high-pressure limit of the reaction are also modeled. The results of the present work markedly depend on the branching ratio between channels 2 and 3. Expressions of this branching ratio from classical trajectory calculations and from photolysis quantum yield measurements were tested. At the same time, a modeling of the photolysis quantum yields was performed. The formaldehyde system so far presents the best characterized multichannel dissociation reaction. It may serve as a prototype for other multichannel dissociation reactions.  相似文献

The cysteine anion was produced in the gas phase by electrospray ionization and investigated by photoelectron spectroscopy at low temperature (70 K). The cysteine anion was found to exhibit the thiolate form [-SCH2CH(NH2)CO2H], rather than the expected carboxylate form [HSCH2CH(NH2)CO2-]. This observation was confirmed by two control experiments, that is, methyl cysteine [CH3SCH2CH(NH2)CO2-] and cysteine methyl ester [-SCH2CH(NH2)CO2CH3]. The electron binding energy of [-SCH2CH(NH2)CO2H] was measured to be about 0.7 eV blue-shifted relative to [-SCH2CH(NH2)CO2CH3] due to the formation of an intramolecular -S-...HO2C- hydrogen bond in the cysteine thiolate. Theoretical calculations at the CCSD(T)/6-311++G(2df,p) and B3LYP/6-311++G(2df,p) levels were carried out to estimate the strength of this intramolecular -S-...HO2C- hydrogen bond. Combining experimental measurements and theoretical calculations yielded an estimated value of 16.4 +/- 2.0 kcal/mol for the -S-...HO2C- intramolecular hydrogen-bond strength.  相似文献

Quantum chemical calculations of geometric and electronic structure and vertical transition energies for several low-lying excited states of the neutral and negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy point defect in diamond (NV(0) and NV(-)) have been performed employing various theoretical methods and basis sets and using finite model NC(n)H(m) clusters. Unpaired electrons in the ground doublet state of NV(0) and triplet state of NV(-) are found to be localized mainly on three carbon atoms around the vacancy and the electronic density on the nitrogen and rest of C atoms is only weakly disturbed. The lowest excited states involve different electronic distributions on molecular orbitals localized close to the vacancy and their wave functions exhibit a strong multireference character with significant contributions from diffuse functions. CASSCF calculations underestimate excitation energies for the anionic defect and overestimate those for the neutral system. The inclusion of dynamic electronic correlation at the CASPT2 level leads to a reasonable agreement (within 0.25 eV) of the calculated transition energy to the lowest excited state with experiment for both systems. Several excited states for NV(-) are found in the energy range of 2-3 eV, but only for the 1(3)E and 5(3)E states the excitation probabilities from the ground state are significant, with the first absorption band calculated at approximately 1.9 eV and the second lying 0.8-1 eV higher in energy than the first one. For NV(0), we predict the following order of electronic states: 1(2)E (0.0), 1(2)A(2) (approximately 2.4 eV), 2(2)E (2.7-2.8 eV), 1(2)A(1), 3(2)E (approximately 3.2 eV and higher).  相似文献
