A compression type mountain pass theorem in conical shells

In this paper we present a compression type version of the mountain pass lemma in a conical shell with respect to two norms. An application to second-order ordinary differential equations is included.     

An extension lemma and homogeneous programming

An extension lemma, which is equivalent to the generalized Gordan's theorem of the alternative, due to Fan, Glicksberg, and Hoffman, is applied to present a duality theory for a general class of homogeneous programs, with and without a constraint qualification of Slater type. In addition, an existence theorem for optimal solutions of homogeneous programs is given.The author thanks an anonymous referee for valuable suggestions about an earlier draft of this paper.     

Positive mountain pass solutions for a semilinear elliptic equation with a sign-changing weight function

We use the mountain pass theorem to study the existence and multiplicity of positive solutions of the generalisation of the well-known logistic equation -Δu=λg(x)u(x)(1-u(x))$-\mathrm{\Delta }u=\lambda g(x)u(x)(1-u(x))$ with Dirichlet boundary conditions to the case where g changes sign.

Level set methods for finding critical points of mountain pass type

Computing mountain passes is a standard way of finding critical points. We describe a numerical method for finding critical points that is convergent in the nonsmooth case and locally superlinearly convergent in the smooth finite dimensional case. We apply these techniques to describe a strategy for addressing the Wilkinson problem of calculating the distance from a matrix to a closest matrix with repeated eigenvalues. Finally, we relate critical points of mountain pass type to nonsmooth and metric critical point theory.     

An application of the regularity lemma in generalized Ramsey theory

Given graphs G and H, an edge coloring of G is called an (H,q)‐coloring if the edges of every copy of H ? G together receive at least q colors. Let r(G,H,q) denote the minimum number of colors in a (H,q)‐coloring of G. In 9 Erd?s and Gyárfás studied r(K_n,K_p,q) if p and q are fixed and n tends to infinity. They determined for every fixed p the smallest q (denoted by q_lin) for which r(K_n,K_p,q) is linear in n and the smallest q (denoted by q_quad) for which r(K_n,K_p,q) is quadratic in n. They raised the problem of determining the smallest q for which we have . In this paper by using the Regularity Lemma we show that if , then we have . © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A variant of the hypergraph removal lemma

Recent work of Gowers [T. Gowers, A new proof of Szemerédi's theorem, Geom. Funct. Anal. 11 (2001) 465-588] and Nagle, Rödl, Schacht, and Skokan [B. Nagle, V. Rödl, M. Schacht, The counting lemma for regular k-uniform hypergraphs, Random Structures Algorithms, in press; V. Rödl, J. Skokan, Regularity lemma for k-uniform hypergraphs, Random Structures Algorithms, in press; V. Rödl, J. Skokan, Applications of the regularity lemma for uniform hypergraphs, preprint] has established a hypergraph removal lemma, which in turn implies some results of Szemerédi [E. Szemerédi, On sets of integers containing no k elements in arithmetic progression, Acta Arith. 27 (1975) 299-345], and Furstenberg and Katznelson [H. Furstenberg, Y. Katznelson, An ergodic Szemerédi theorem for commuting transformations, J. Anal. Math. 34 (1978) 275-291] concerning one-dimensional and multidimensional arithmetic progressions, respectively. In this paper we shall give a self-contained proof of this hypergraph removal lemma. In fact we prove a slight strengthening of the result, which we will use in a subsequent paper [T. Tao, The Gaussian primes contain arbitrarily shaped constellations, preprint] to establish (among other things) infinitely many constellations of a prescribed shape in the Gaussian primes.     

Solutions and Multiple Solutions for p(x)-Laplacian Equations with Nonlinear Boundary Condition

The authors study the p(x)-Laplacian equations with nonlinear boundary condition.By using the variational method,under appropriate assumptions on the perturbation terms f1(x,u),f2(x,u) and h1(x),h2(x),such that the associated functional satisfies the "mountain pass lemma" and "fountain theorem" respectively,the existence and multiplicity of solutions are obtained.The discussion is based on the theory of variable exponent Lebesgue and Sobolev spaces.     

Nontrivial solutions for a nonlinear discrete elliptic equation with periodic boundary conditions

In this paper, existence of nontrivial solutions for a nonlinear discrete elliptic equation with periodic boundary conditions is considered by using the monotone operator principle, Mountain pass lemma, Linking theorem and some results in Morse theory. The obtained results are also valid and new for the corresponding difference periodic boundary value problem.     

A short proof of the wonderful lemma

The Wonderful Lemma, that was first proved by Roussel and Rubio, is one of the most important tools in the proof of the Strong Perfect Graph Theorem. Here we give a short proof of this lemma.     

An elliptic resonance problem with multiple solutions

In this paper we study the existence of multiple nontrivial solutions for a semilinear elliptic equation at resonance by the minimax methods and Morse theory.     

Two positive nontrivial solutions for a class of semilinear elliptic variational systems

We obtain existence and localization results of positive nontrivial solutions for a class of semilinear elliptic variational systems. The proof is based on variants of Schechter's localized critical point theorems for Hilbert spaces not identified to their duals and on the technique of inverse-positive matrices. The Leray-Schauder boundary condition is also involved.     

Existence of solutions to nonlinear Hammerstein integral equations and applications

In this paper, we study the existence and multiplicity of solutions of the operator equation Kfu=u in the real Hilbert space L²(G). Under certain conditions on the linear operator K, we establish the conditions on f which are able to guarantee that the operator equation has at least one solution, a unique solution, and infinitely many solutions, respectively. The monotone operator principle and the critical point theory are employed to discuss this problem, respectively. In argument, quadratic root operator K1/2 and its properties play an important role. As an application, we investigate the existence and multiplicity of solutions to fourth-order boundary value problems for ordinary differential equations with two parameters, and give some new existence results of solutions.     

Combined perturbation effects for a class of nonlinear fourth-order Navier problems

We study a class of nonlinear elliptic problems with Navier boundary condition and involving the Laplace and the biharmonic operators. The main result of this paper establishes a sufficient condition for the existence of nontrivial weak solutions, in relationship with the values of a certain real parameter with respect to the principal eigenvalue of the Laplace operator.     

Bipullbacks of fractions and the snail lemma

We establish conditions giving the existence of bipullbacks in bicategories of fractions. We apply our results to construct a ${\pi }_0$-${\pi }_1$ exact sequence associated with a fractor between groupoids internal to a pointed exact category.     

Existence and multiplicity of solutions for Kirchhoff type equations

In this paper, the existence and multiplicity of weak solutions are obtained for a class of Kirchhoff type problems with Dirichlet boundary value conditions by using the mountain pass theorem, the local linking theorem, the fountain theorem and the symmetric mountain pass lemma in critical point theory.

The Dedekind-Mertens lemma and the contents of polynomials

Existence of solutions to a class of nonlinear second order two-point boundary value problems

In this paper, the existence and multiplicity results of solutions are obtained for the second order two-point boundary value problem −u^″(t)=f(t,u(t)) for all t∈[0,1] subject to u(0)=u^′(1)=0, where f is continuous. The monotone operator theory and critical point theory are employed to discuss this problem, respectively. In argument, quadratic root operator and its properties play an important role.
