Though research into nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) has recently increased, few studies have considered co-utilising NFC and nanographite (NG) in composite films, and, it has, however been a challenge to use high-yield pulp fibres (mechanical pulps) to produce this nanofibrillar material. It is worth noting that there is a significant difference between chemical pulp fibres and high-yield pulp fibres, as the former is composed mainly of cellulose and has a yield of approximately 50 % while the latter is consist of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin, and has a yield of approximately 90 %. NFC was produced by combining TEMPO (2,2,6,6-tetramethypiperidine-1-oxyl)-mediated oxidation with the mechanical shearing of chemi-thermomechanical pulp (CTMP) and sulphite pulp (SP); the NG was produced by mechanically exfoliating graphite. The different NaClO dosages in the TEMPO system differently oxidised the fibres, altering their fibrillation efficiency. NFC–NG films were produced by casting in a Petri dish. We examine the effect of NG on the sheet-resistance and mechanical properties of NFC films. Addition of 10 wt% NG to 90 wt% NFC of sample CC2 (5 mmol NaClO CTMP-NFC homogenised for 60 min) improved the sheet resistance, i.e. from that of an insulating pure NFC film to 180 Ω/sq. Further addition of 20 (CC3) and 25 wt% (CC4) of NG to 80 and 75 wt% respectively, lowered the sheet resistance to 17 and 9 Ω/sq, respectively. For the mechanical properties, we found that adding 10 wt% NG to 90 wt% NFC of sample HH2 (5 mmol NaClO SP-NFC homogenised for 60 min) improved the tensile index by 28 %, tensile stiffness index by 20 %, and peak load by 28 %. The film’s surface morphology was visualised using scanning electron microscopy, revealing the fibrillated structure of NFC and NG. This methodology yields NFC–NG films that are mechanically stable, bendable, and flexible.  相似文献

Lignocellulose nanofibrils (LCNF) were produced from thermo-mechanical pulp (TMP) using a micro-grinder and were characterized with respect to fiber diameter and thermal stability. The initial water content in the TMP affected the defibrillation process and longer grinding time was necessary for the air-dried TMP, resulting in LCNF with higher fibril diameter. As compared to the reference cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) produced through a refining process, LCNF was less thermally stable and started to degrade at a temperature that was 30 °C lower than that of CNF. LCNF obtained from the never-dried TMP was combined with various additives (10 wt%) to produce composite films. The neat LCNF and composite films did not reach the mechanical properties of the neat CNF film that was evaluated as reference. However, the addition of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) at 10 wt% on a dry basis did cause a 46 and 25% increase in tensile strength and elastic modulus, respectively. Other additives including cellulose nanocrystals, bentonite and CNF were also found to increase to some extent the Young’s modulus and ductility of the LCNF composite films whereas the addition of talc did not improve the film performance. Water absorption of neat LCNF films was lower than the reference CNF and was negatively affected by the addition of PVA.  相似文献

Short cellulose nanofibrils (SCNF) were investigated as reinforcement for polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers. SCNF were mechanically isolated from hard wood pulp after enzymatic pretreatment. Various levels of SCNF were added to an aqueous PVA solution, which was gel-spun into continuous fibers. The molecular orientation of PVA was affected by a combination of wet drawing during gel spinning and post-hot-drawing at a high temperature after drying. A maximum total draw ratio of 27 was achieved with various SCNF contents investigated. The PVA crystal orientation increased when small amounts of SCNF were added, but decreased again as the SCNF content was increased above about 2 or 3 %, likely due to SCNF percolation resulting in network formation that inhibited alignment. SCNF fillers were effective in improving PVA fiber tensile properties (i.e., ultimate strength and elastic modulus). For example, the ultimate strength and modulus of PVA/SCNF composite fiber with a SCNF weight ratio of 6 were nearly 60 and 220 % higher than that of neat PVA. Shifts in the Raman peak at ~1,095 cm?1, which were associated with the C–O–C glycosidic bond of SCNF, indicated good stress-transfer between the SCNF and the PVA matrix due to strong interfacial hydrogen bonding. Cryogenic fractured scanning electron microscopy images of filled and unfilled PVA fibers showed uniform SCNF dispersion.  相似文献

Moisture sorption decreases dimensional stability and mechanical properties of polymer matrix biocomposites based on plant fibers. Cellulose nanofiber reinforcement may offer advantages in this respect. Here, wood-based nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) and bacterial cellulose (BC) nanopaper structures, with different specific surface area (SSA), ranging from 0.03 to 173.3 m2/g, were topochemically acetylated and characterized by ATR-FTIR, XRD, solid-state CP/MAS 13C-NMR and moisture sorption studies. Polymer matrix nanocomposites based on NFC were also prepared as demonstrators. The surface degree of substitution (surface-DS) of the acetylated cellulose nanofibers is a key parameter, which increased with increasing SSA. Successful topochemical acetylation was confirmed and significantly reduced the moisture sorption in nanopaper structures, especially at RH = 53 %. BC nanopaper sorbed less moisture than the NFC counterpart, and mechanisms are discussed. Topochemical NFC nanopaper acetylation can be used to prepare moisture-stable nanocellulose biocomposites.  相似文献

Nanocomposite films consisting of cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs), magnesium hydroxide nanoplatelets (MHNPs) and regenerated cellulose were prepared via simple blending and casting processes. The CNFs were obtained from bamboo pulp by ultrasonic treatment coupled with high shear homogenization. The morphology, structure and properties of the nanocomposite films were comprehensively analyzed using various characterization techniques, including the scanning electron microscope, digital microscope, limiting oxygen index (LOI), micro-scale combustion calorimetry, antibacterial assays, tensile testing, etc. When the MHNP content was optimized to 30 wt%, the nanocomposite film exhibited the best overall properties. The LOI of the composite film increased from 20.0 (0 wt% MHNPs) to 32.7 (30 wt% MHNPs), making it a flame-retardant material in air. In addition, the film containing 30 wt% MHNPs showed excellent antibacterial activity. However, the increase in MHNP content would result in gradual deterioration of the films’ mechanical properties. However, the incorporation of CNFs could significantly suppress this trend. The present work provided a promising pathway for manufacturing multifunctional and high-performance cellulose-based composite films, which were potentially useful for a variety of packaging materials, especially in the biomedical and food packaging fields.  相似文献

In the present work, nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) from bleached eucalyptus pulp was prepared, characterized and used as reinforcement in an unbleached eucalyptus fiber matrix. First, the NFC was fabricated through TEMPO-mediated oxidation and characterized for the degree of polymerization, water retention value, cationic demand and carboxyl content. Intrinsic mechanical properties were also calculated by applying the rule of mixtures, which determines the coupling (f c) and efficiency factor (η e) of cellulose nanofibrils within the matrix. The results showed that the average intrinsic tensile strength and Young’s modulus of NFC are estimated to be 6,919 MPa and 161 GPa, respectively. After characterization, the NFC was used as reinforcement in the preparation of biocomposites in the form of paper handsheets, which were physically and mechanically analyzed. The presence of NFC induced an increase in the density of biocomposites and significant enhancement of the mechanical properties as well as an important reduction in porosity. Finally, f c and η e were determined from the mean intrinsic properties.  相似文献

Nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) is a renewable and biodegradable fibril that possesses high strength and stiffness resulting from high level hydrogen bonding. Films made from NFC shrink and distort as they transition from a wet state (20 wt% solids) to a state of moisture equilibrium (90 wt% solids at 50 % RH, 23 °C). Material distortions are driven by development of moisture gradients within the fibril network and effectively reduce mechanical performance. For this study, NFC was extracted from softwood holocellulose by first employing a chemical pretreatment [(2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-1-yl)oxyl catalyzed oxidation] followed by mechanical fibrillation using ultrasound energy. To assess the problem of film distortion, neat NFC films were dried at 50 % RH, 23 °C under one of the following three restraint conditions: fully restrained, partially restrained, and uniaxially drawn. The influence of restraint condition on the resulting physical and mechanical properties was evaluated. Raman and X-ray results showed that fibrils in the uniaxially drawn specimens tended to align with the drawing axis, whereas no in-plane orientation effects were observed for the fully or partially restrained specimens. Fully restrained specimens had a respective strength and stiffness of 222 MPa and 14 GPa in every (in-plane) direction. However, samples that were wet-drawn to a 30 % strain level had a respective strength and stiffness of 474 MPa and 46 GPa in the direction of draw. Mechanical properties for axially drawn specimens had both fibril alignment and fibril straightening contributions.  相似文献

用较简单的化学氧化现场吸附聚合法(in-situpolymerization)制得了聚苯胺(PAn)/聚乙烯醇(PVA)导电复合膜.该膜具有较好的导电性和机械性能;其电导率可达5.8s/cm,拉伸强度达13MPa,断裂伸长率为110%左右.本文讨论了制备的各种条件对复合膜导电性能及力学性能的影响、稳定性及电化学活性;并采用循环伏安曲线、扫描电镜(SEM)、FTIR谱及元素分析对该复合膜的结构和性能进行了表征.  相似文献

The novel polymer composite of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), polyol(PO) and graphene oxide (GO) was used to prepare the PVA/PO and GO/PVA/PO with different weight percents of GO (0.5 and 1% denoted as (0.5 wt%)GO/PVA/PO and (1 wt%)GO/PVA/PO, respectively) through solution casting blend technique. The structure–properties of all used films were confirmed by scanning electron microscope (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and mechanical properties. The SEM results exhibited the uniform and homogeneous dispersion of GO in the PVA/PO blend matrix. The TEM and XRD analysis confirmed the structure and exfoliation of GO nanosheets, respectively. Thermal stability suggested that (0.5 wt%)GO/PVA/PO and (1 wt%) GO/PVA/PO films are more stable than PVA/PO. The tensile strength of (0.5 wt%)GO/PVA/PO and (1 wt%)GO/PVA/PO films reached 270.5% and 1349.6%, respectively, which are higher than that of the PVA/PO film. The decrease in the water absorption (WA) of GO/PVA/PO was found from 110.5 to 38.4%. The physico-mechanical properties of used films suggested that the prepared GO/PVA/PO blend composite films can be applied in food packaging areas.  相似文献

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) compounds were successfully melt-processed by injection molding. During the processing, water was involved in the system as both the dispersion medium for CNCs and the plasticizer for PVA. Meanwhile, formamide was added to prevent the evaporation of water and to co-plasticize PVA. Thermal gravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry indicated the melt processing window of PVA was expanded by 40 °C. Tensile tests showed that the mechanical properties of injection-molded samples were significantly improved with the addition of CNCs. The tensile strength of the composites increased from 32 to 58 MPa, and modulus increased from 175 to 1,252 MPa when 7 wt% CNCs was added. Moreover, the volume shrinkage of PVA nanocomposites upon drying as well as their water leaching rate could be remarkably reduced in the presence of CNCs.  相似文献

Self-standing composite films consisting of 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl-oxidized cellulose nanofibril (TOCN) and anionic poly(acrylamide) (PAM) in various weight ratios were prepared by casting and drying of homogeneous mixtures of aqueous TOCN dispersion and PAM solution. PAM/TOCN composite films consisting of 25 % PAM and 75 % TOCN had clearly higher Young’s modulus (13.9 GPa) and tensile strength (266 MPa) than 100 % TOCN film (10.8 GPa and 223 MPa, respectively) or 100 % PAM film (4.9 GPa and 78 MPa, respectively), showing that PAM molecules have mechanical reinforcement ability in TOCN matrix. Some attractive interactions are likely formed between TOCN element surfaces and PAM molecules. In contrast, no such mechanical improvements were observed for poly(vinyl alcohol)/TOCN or oxidized starch/TOCN composite films prepared as references. Moreover, the mechanical properties of the PAM/TOCN composite films were further improved by controlling molecular mass and branching degree of the PAM. The high optical transparency and low coefficient of thermal expansion of the 100 % TOCN film were mostly maintained in the TOCN composite film containing 25 % PAM.  相似文献

Native cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) were prepared from bleached birch pulp without any chemical or enzymatic pretreatment. These CNF were modified by adsorption of a small amount of water-soluble polysaccharides and used to prepare nanopapers, which were processed into composites by lamination with an epoxy resin and subsequently cured. The results were compared to the properties of composites prepared using bacterial cellulose nanopapers, since bacterial cellulose constitutes highly pure and crystalline cellulose. It was found that both types of nanopapers significantly improved both the thermal stability and mechanical properties of the epoxy resin. As anticipated, addition of only 2 wt% of water-soluble polysaccharides efficiently hindered crack-propagation within the nanopaper and significantly improved the tensile strength and work of fracture compared to composites containing a conventional nanopaper reinforcement. The mechanical properties of the composites thus reflected the improvement of the nanopaper properties by the polysaccharides. Moreover, it was possible to predict the properties of the final composite from the mechanical performance of the nanopapers.  相似文献

Microfibrillated cellulose (MFC), a mechanically fibrillated pulp mostly consisting of nanofibrils, is a very attractive material because of its high elastic modulus and strength. Although much research has been done on composites of MFC and polypropylene (PP), it has been difficult to produce such composites at an industrial level because of the difficulties in using MFC in such composites are not only connected to the polarity (that can be improved with compatibilizers), but also with the challenge to make a homogeneous blend of the components, and also the low temperature stability of cellulose that could cause problems during processing. We developed a new processing method which enables continuous microfibrillation of pulp and its melt compounding with PP. Never-dried kraft pulp and powdered PP were used as raw materials to obtain MFC by kneading via a twin-screw extruder. Scanning electron microscopy showed nano to submicron wide fibers entangled in the powdered PP. MFC did not aggregate during the melt compounding process, during which the water content was evaporated. Maleic anhydride polypropylene (MAPP) was used as a compatibilizer to reinforce interfacial adhesion between the polar hydroxyl groups of MFC and non-polar PP. We investigated the effect of MAPP content on the mechanical properties of the composite, which were drastically improved by MAPP addition. Needle-leaf unbleached kraft pulp (NUKP)-derived MFC composites had better mechanical properties than needle-leaf bleached kraft pulp (NBKP)-derived MFC composites. Injection molded NUKP-derived MFC composites had good mechanical and thermal properties. The tensile modulus of 50 wt% MFC composite was two times, and the tensile strength 1.5 times higher than that of neat PP. The heat distortion temperature of 50 wt% MFC content composite under 1.82 MPa flexural load was increased by 53 °C, from 69 to 122 °C. This newly developed continuous process using powder resin has the potential for application at an industrial level.  相似文献

In the present work the evolution of physical and mechanical properties of papers and nanopapers is studied. Handsheets made of eucalyptus fibres reinforced with 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 wt% of nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) content were fabricated using a Rapid Köthen-like equipment. The obtained papers and nanopapers were physical- and mechanically-characterized. The results showed a significant increase in density and a reduction of porosity in the samples during their transition from paper to nanopaper; besides, nanopapers were more transparent and smoother than normal papers. These physical changes where more evident with increasing amounts of NFC. Regarding mechanical properties, nanopapers with a 100 wt% content of NFC improved their strength and rigidity in 228 and 317 %, respectively, in comparison with normal papers. The evolution of strength and rigidity from paper to nanopaper was linear in relation to the amount of NFC, which means that the ultimate tensile strength was mainly dependant on nanofibril failure.  相似文献

Nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) is a type of nanomaterial based on renewable resources and produced by mechanical disintegration without chemicals. NFC is a potential reinforcing material with a high surface area and high aspect ratio, both of which increase reinforcement on the nanoscale. The raw materials used were unbleached and bleached bamboo organosolv pulp. Organosolv pulping is a cleaner process than other industrial methods (i.e. Kraft process), as it uses organic solvents during cooking and provides easy solvent recovery at the end of the process. The NFC was produced by treating unbleached and bleached bamboo organosolv pulps for 5, 10, 15 and 20 nanofibrillation cycles using the grinding method. Chemical, physical and mechanical tests were performed to determine the optimal condition for nanofibrillation. The delamination of the S2 layer of the fibers during nanofibrillation contributed to the partial removal of amorphous components (mainly lignin), which have low polarity and improved the adhesion of the fibers, particularly the unbleached cellulose. The transverse modulus of elasticity of the unbleached NFC was highest after 10 nanofibrillation cycles. Further treatment cycles decreased the modulus due to the mechanical degradation of the fibers. The unbleached NFC produced by 10 cycles have a greater transverse modulus of elasticity, the crystallite size showed increase with the nanofibrillation, and after 5 nanofibrillation cycles, no differences are observed in the morphology of the fibers.  相似文献

Bionanocomposites of hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) and nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) were prepared by solution casting. The various NFC were in form of powders and were prepared from refined, bleached beech pulp (RBP) by mechanical disintegration, optionally combined with a pre- or post mechanical carboxymethylation. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and tensile tests were performed to compare the reinforcing effects of the NFC powders to those of their never-dried analogues. For unmodified NFC powders an inferior reinforcing potential in HPC was observed that was ascribed to severe hornification and reagglomeration of NFC. In contrast, the composites with carboxymethylated NFC showed similar behaviors, regardless of the NFC suspensions being dried or not prior to composite preparation. SEM characterization confirmed a homogeneous dispersion of dried, carboxymethylated NFC within the HPC matrix. These results clearly demonstrate that drying of carboxymethylated NFC to a powder does not decrease its reinforcing potential in (bio)nanocomposites.  相似文献

Nanocomposites of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) reinforced with bacterial cellulose (BC) were bioproduced by Gluconacetobacter genus bacteria. BC was grown from a culture medium modified with water-soluble PVA to allow in situ assembly and production of a novel nanocomposite that displayed synergistic property contributions from the individual components. Chemical crosslinking with glyoxal was performed to avoid the loss of PVA matrix during purification steps and to improve the functional properties of composite films. Reinforcement with BC at 0.6, 6 and 14 wt% content yielded nanocomposites with excellent mechanical, thermal and dimensional properties as well as moisture stability. Young’s modulus and strength at break increased markedly with the reinforcing BC: relative to the control sample (in absence of BC), increases of 15, 165 and 680 % were determined for nanocomposites with 0.6, 6 and 14 % BC loading, respectively. The corresponding increase in tensile strengths at yield were 1, 12 and 40 %, respectively. The results indicate an exceptional reinforcing effect by the three-dimensional network structure formed by the BC upon biosynthesis embedded in the PVA matrix and also suggest a large percolation within the matrix. Bonding (mainly hydrogen bonding) and chemical crosslinking between the reinforcing phase and matrix were the main contributions to the properties of the nanocomposite.  相似文献

A green method—joint mechanical grinding and high pressure homogenization—was used to defibrillate paper pulp into nanofibrils. The prepared cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) were then blended with PVA in an aqueous system to prepare transparent composite film. The size and morphology of the nanofibrils and their composites were observed, and the structure and properties were characterized. The results showed that CNFs are beneficial to improve the crystallinity, mechanical strength, Young’s modulus, T g and thermal stability of the PVA matrix because of their high aspect ratio, crystallinity and good compatibility. Therefore, nano cellulosic fibrils were proven to be an effective reinforcing filler for the hydrophilic polymer matrix. Moreover, the green fabrication approaches will be helpful to build up biodegradable nanocomposites with wide applications in functional environmentally friendly materials.  相似文献

A low-humidification membrane electrode assembly (MEA) for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) is prepared by adding the hydrophilic polymer: polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) to the anode catalyst layer. Glutaraldehyde (GA) is employed as a crosslinking agent for PVA to prevent washing from the anode during cell operation. This is confirmed by an immersion test in deionized water for 2 h. A single cell test is conducted at 80 °C, ambient pressure, and 50 % relative humidity. Although MEA containing 1 wt% non-crosslinked PVA shows the best initial performance (788 mA cm?2 at 0.6 V), a considerable performance decrease of 41 % is observed following a 100-h durability test. However, MEA containing 5 wt% crosslinked PVA demonstrates enhanced durability, with little performance decline after 100 h of constant current operation. This strongly suggests that crosslinked PVA plays a crucial role in a low-humidification MEA at low humidity levels.  相似文献

Starch and polyvinyl alcohol composite films, reinforced with raw and methylmethacrylate-grafted silk fibroin particles, were prepared by the solution-casting method on leveled plates. Silk fibroin was used as reinforcement for starch and polyvinyl alcohol (St/PVA) blends in order to improve their mechanical and water-resistance properties. The composites were plasticized with citric acid and cross-linked with gluteraldehyde. The reinforced films showed an increase in tensile strength with decrease in elongation at break. The optimized samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and were studied for their antibacterial properties. The biodegradable behavior was studied by the soil burial method.  相似文献
