The dispersion process of single-wall carbon nanotube (SWNT) by using sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (NaDDBS) was studied by means of surface tension measurements, ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron spectroscopy (TEM). The critical micelle concentration (CMC) and the concentration where the surface tension begins to drop increase by the presence of SWNT. The isotherm of NaDDBS amount adsorbed on SWNT shows the plateau region at 0.2-6 mM and the saturated region above 40 mM. The external surface of SWNT bundle is fully covered with adsorbed NaDDBS at the plateau region, showing that SWNTs can be dispersed with the bundle form. On the other hand, SWNTs are dispersed in individual tubes at the saturated region, where the adsorption amount corresponds to coating of individual tube surfaces with NaDDBS. This dispersion state was confirmed by SEM and TEM observations. The effect of the dispersion state of SWNTs on radial breathing mode in Raman spectrum gave inherent peak shifts, being the in situ evidences on the step-wise dispersion mechanism of the SWNT bundle to the individual tubes.  相似文献

Highly stable single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) dispersions are obtained after ultrasonication in cellulose nanocrystal (CN) aqueous colloidal suspensions. Mild dispersion conditions were applied to preserve the SWNT length in order to facilitate the identification of hybrid objects. This led to a moderate dispersion of 24% of the SWNTs. Under these conditions, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) experiments succeeded in demonstrating the formation of hybrid particles in which CNs are aligned along the nanotube axis by a self-assembly process. These SWNT/CN dispersions are used to create multilayered thin films with the layer-by-layer method using polyallylamine hydrochloride as a polyelectrolyte. Homogeneous films from one to eight bilayers are obtained with an average bilayer thickness of 17 nm. The presence of SWNTs in each bilayer is attested to by characteristic Raman signals. It should be noted that these films exhibit a near-infrared luminescence signal due to isolated and well-separated nanotubes. Furthermore, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) suggests that the SWNT network is percolating through the film.  相似文献

We describe the functionalization of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) with 4-(2-trimethylsilyl)ethynylaniline and the subsequent attachment of a zinc-phthalocyanine (ZnPc) derivative using the reliable Huisgen 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition. The motivation of this study was the preparation of a nanotube-based platform which allows the facile fabrication of more complex functional nanometer-scale structures, such as a SWNT-ZnPc hybrid. The nanotube derivatives described here were fully characterized by a combination of analytical techniques such as Raman, absorption and emission spectroscopy, atomic force and scanning electron microscopy (AFM and SEM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The SWNT-ZnPc nanoconjugate was also investigated with a series of steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopy experiments, and a photoinduced communication between the two photoactive components (i.e., SWNT and ZnPc) was identified. Such beneficial features lead to monochromatic internal photoconversion efficiencies of 17.3% when the SWNT-ZnPc hybrid material was tested as photoactive material in an ITO photoanode.  相似文献

Natural rubber nanocomposites with SiC nanoparticles and carbon nanotubes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and SiC nanoparticles were dispersed in natural rubber (NR) polymer solution and subsequently evaporated the solvent to prepare NR nanocomposites. Using this technique, nanoparticles can be better dispersed in the NR matrix. The influence of nano-fillers on the mechanical properties of the resulting nanocomposites was quantified.Mechanical test results show an increase in the initial modulus with nanoscale reinforcements for up to 50% strain compared to pure NR. The modulus and strength of natural rubber with 1.5% SiC nanoparticles appear to be superior to those of SWNTs with the same filler content. In addition to mechanical testing, these nanocomposites were studied using the SEM and Raman spectroscopy techniques in order to understand the morphology of the resulting system and the load transfer mechanism, respectively. The Raman spectrum of the SWNT/NR system is characterized by a strong band at 1595 cm−1 (G mode—C-C stretching) and other two bands at 1300 cm−1 (D mode-disorder induced) and 2590 cm−1 (D* band). A shift of the 2590 cm−1 Raman band to the lower wavenumber was observed after subjecting SWNT/NR sample to cyclic stress testing. Ageing SWNT/NR specimen in distilled water for 30 days also provided a similar result. The Raman shift in aged samples indicates internal stress transfer from the natural rubber matrix to the SWNTs implying the existence of bonding at the interface.  相似文献

We show that single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) with different isotope compositions exhibit distinct Raman G-band peaks and can be used for multiplexed multicolor Raman imaging of biological systems. Cancer cells with specific receptors are selectively labeled with three differently "colored" SWNTs conjugated with various targeting ligands including Herceptin (anti-Her2), Erbitux (anti-Her1), and RGD peptide, allowing for multicolor Raman imaging of cells in a multiplexed manner. SWNT Raman signals are highly robust against photobleaching, allowing long-term imaging and tracking. With narrow peak features, SWNT Raman signals are easily differentiated from the autofluorescence background. The SWNT Raman excitation and scattering photons are in the near-infrared region, which is the most transparent optical window for biological systems in vitro and in vivo. Thus, SWNTs are novel Raman tags promising for multiplexed biological detection and imaging.  相似文献

We report a systematic study of the purification of nitric acid treated single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) by centrifugation at constant pH. The progress of the purification procedure was followed by estimating the purity by solution-phase near-infrared spectroscopy, and it was found that the sediment obtained by centrifugation at pH 2 had the highest purity. The stability of the aqueous dispersions of SWNTs and carbonaceous impurities (CIMP) after nitric acid treatment was investigated by measuring their zeta potential and the concentration of acidic sites. We found that, at lower pH, the CIMP has a higher zeta potential than nitric acid treated SWNTs, and it is this factor that allowed the separation of the carbonaceous impurities via centrifugation and the concomitant purification of the SWNTs.  相似文献

The effect of impurities on the properties of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) was investigated with multiple analytical techniques. Charge transfer is believed to occur between the impurities and the SWNTs as observed by combining the Raman scattering and x-ray photoelectron measurements. The impurity condition (type and level) was found to strongly affect the electronic and vibrational properties of the SWNT. The metal catalysts in the impurity usually behave as electron donors, which can downshift the graphitic (G) band as well as the radial breathing mode frequencies. The low temperature air oxidation of as-prepared SWNT material usually upshifts the radial breathing mode Raman peaks to higher frequencies.  相似文献

Uniform MoO3 single-walled nanotubes (SWNTs) have been successfully synthesized for the first time through a simple thiol-assisted hydrothermal method. TEM, HRTEM, EELS and XPS characterization showed that the as-obtained sample was composed of high purity SWNTs. We hope our endeavor could blaze a new path in the field of NT research, especially in the barely explored noncarbon SWNT areas.  相似文献

High resolution thermogravimetry has been used to evaluate the carbonaceous content in a commercial sample of single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT). The content of SWNTs in the sample was found to be at least 77 mass% which was supported by images obtained with scanning and transmission electron microscopies (SEM and TEM). Furthermore, the influence of SWNT addition on the thermal stability of graphite in mixtures of SWNT/graphite at different proportions was investigated. The graphite stability decreased with the increased of SWNT content in the overall range of composition. This behavior could be due to the close contact between these carbonaceous species as determined by SEM analysis.  相似文献

We report herein the template-directed synthesis, characterization, and electric properties of single-walled carbon nanotube- (SWNT-) based coaxial nanowires, that is, core (SWNT)-shell (conducting polypyrrole and polyaniline) nanowires. The SWNTs were first dispersed in aqueous solutions containing cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) or nonionic surfactant poly(ethylene glycol) mono-p-nonyl phenyl ether (O pi-10). Each individual nanotube (or small bundle) was then encased in its own micellelike envelope with hydrophobic surfactant groups orientated toward the nanotube and hydrophilic groups orientated toward the solution. And thus a hydrophobic region within the micelle/SWNT (called a micelle/SWNT hybrid template) was formed. Insertion and growth of pyrrole or aniline monomers in this hybrid template, upon removal of the surfactant, produce coaxial structures with a SWNT center and conducting polypyrrole or polyaniline coating. Raman and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and scanning (SEM) and transmission (TEM) electron microscopy were used to characterize the composition and the structures of these coaxial nanowires. The results revealed that the micellar molecules used could affect the surface morphologies of the resulting coaxial nanowires but not the molecular structures of the corresponding conducting polymers. Electric properties testing indicated that the SWNTs played the key roles in the conducting polymer/SWNT composites during electron transfer in the temperature range 77 K to room temperature. Compared with the SWNT network embedded in the conducting polymers, the composites within which SWNTs were coated perfectly by the identical conducting polymers exhibited higher barrier heights during electron transfer.  相似文献

A methodology that takes into account the (n,m) structure of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs), through an exciton-exciton resonance model and an electron-phonon interaction model, was employed in order to evaluate the semiconducting (n,m) abundance of two SWNT samples (i.e., Co-MCM-41 and HiPco). This was based on photoluminescence and near-infrared absorption data obtained on aqueous suspensions of individually dispersed SWNTs. In the absence of known (n,m) abundance SWNT samples, we resorted to determining the diameter distribution curves for both samples, which were found to obey an unsymmetrical log-normal distribution, typical for vapor-phase particle growth. Using this log-normal function, we reconstructed the near-infrared E S11 absorption spectrum of the narrow diameter distribution Co-MCM-41 SWNT sample, which in turn enabled us to assess the predictions of these two theoretical models. High spectral reconstruction accuracy was obtained from the electron-phonon interaction model when considering (11,0) and (10,0) zigzag nanotubes, along with (n,m) line widths inversely proportional to their extinction coefficients.  相似文献

The reactions of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) with succinic or glutaric acid acyl peroxides in o-dichlorobenzene at 80-90 degrees C resulted in the addition of 2-carboxyethyl or 3-carboxypropyl groups, respectively, to the sidewalls of the SWNT. These acid-functionalized SWNTs were converted to acid chlorides by derivatization with SOCl(2) and then to amides with terminal diamines such as ethylenediamine, 4,4'-methylenebis(cyclohexylamine), and diethyltoluenediamine. The acid-functionalized SWNTs and the amide derivatives were characterized by a set of materials characterization methods including attenuated total reflectance (ATR) FTIR, Raman and solid state (13)C NMR spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and thermal gravimetry-mass spectrometry (TG-MS). The degree of SWNT sidewall functionalization with the acid-terminated groups was estimated as 1 in 24 carbons on the basis of TG-MS data. In comparison with the pristine SWNTs, the acid-functionalized SWNTs show an improved solubility in polar solvents, for example, alcohols and water, which enables their processing for incorporation into polymer composite structures as well as for a variety of biomedical applications.  相似文献

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are promising materials for in vitro and in vivo biological applications due to their high surface area and inherent near infrared photoluminescence and Raman scattering properties. Here, we use density gradient centrifugation to separate SWNTs by length and degree of bundling. Following separation, we observe a peak in photoluminescence quantum yield (PL QY) and Raman scattering intensity where SWNT length is maximized and bundling is minimized. Individualized SWNTs are found to exhibit high PL QY and high resonance-enhanced Raman scattering intensity. Fractions containing long, individual SWNTs exhibit the highest PL QY and Raman scattering intensities, compared to fractions containing single, short SWNTs or SWNT bundles. Intensity gains of approximately ~1.7 and 4-fold, respectively, are obtained compared with the starting material. Spectroscopic analysis reveals that SWNT fractions at higher displacement contain increasing proportions of SWNT bundles, which causes reduced optical transition energies and broadening of absorption features in the UV-Vis-NIR spectra, and reduced PL QY and Raman scattering intensity. Finally, we adsorb small aromatic species on "bright," individualized SWNT sidewalls and compare the resulting absorption, PL and Raman scattering effects to that of SWNT bundles. We observe similar effects in both cases, suggesting aromatic stacking affects the optical properties of SWNTs in an analogous way to SWNT bundles, likely due to electronic structure perturbations, charge transfer, and dielectric screening effects, resulting in reduction of the excitonic optical transition energies and exciton lifetimes.

Here, we carried out Raman study on chemically doped single wall carbon nanotube (SWNT)/double-walled carbon nanotube (DWNT) mixed bucky-papers. Their highly different Raman responses (e.g., a large upshift of tangential mode of SWNT and no large changes in the frequencies of tangential mode assigned to the outer tubes of the DWNT) upon doping with the sulfuric acid could be used as a qualitative indicator of the purity of the DWNT samples with the concentration of its SWNTs contents.  相似文献

The charge transfer induced lithiation of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) was investigated by in situ monitoring by Raman spectroscopy as lithium was added incrementally to a dispersion of SWNTs in liquid ammonia. Charge transfer from liquid ammonia solvated lithium to the SWNTs led to intercalation of lithium into the SWNT ropes, as well as to the semi-covalent lithiation of the SWNTs. Raman spectra of the SWNTs recorded as lithium was added showed a 30 wavenumber downshift of the G band (1594 cm−1) with the concomitant appearance of a new peak at 1350 cm−1 that was assigned as the signature of the lithiated SWNTs. Addition of 1-iodododecane to the lithiated SWNTs resulted in the covalent attachment of dodecyl groups. The intercalation of lithium throughout the SWNT ropes led to complete dodecylation of all individual SWNTs.  相似文献

In this study, the performances of fixed and fluidized bed reactors in the production of single-walled carbon nanotubes(SWNTs)have been investigated. In both reactors,single-walled carbon nanotubes were grown by catalytic chemical vapor decomposition(CCVD)of methane over Co-Mo/MgO nanocatalyst under two different operating conditions. The synthesized samples were characterized by TEM,TGA and Raman spectroscopy. It is found that the performance of a fluidized bed in the synthesis of carbon nanotubes is much better than that of a fixed bed.The quality of carbon nanotubes obtained from the fluidized bed was significantly higher than that from the fixed bed and the former one with the ID/IG ratio of 0.11 while the latter one with the ID/IG ratio of 0.71.Also,the yield of SWNTs in the fluidized bed was 92 wt%,while it was 78 wt%in the fixed bed. These advantages of fluidized bed reactors for the synthesis of carbon nanotubes can be attributed to more available space for the growth of carbon nanotubes and more uniform temperature and concentration profiles.  相似文献

A procedure, combining molecular simulation, Raman spectroscopy, and standard nitrogen adsorption, is developed for structural characterization of single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) samples. Grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations of nitrogen adsorption are performed on the external and internal adsorption sites of homogeneous arrays of SWNTs of diameters previously determined by Raman spectroscopy of the sample. The results show the importance of the peripheral grooves of a nanotube bundle at low relative pressure and the insensitivity of nanotube diameter toward adsorption on the external surface of the bundle at higher pressures. Simulations also reveal that samples containing thin nanotubes have less internal adsorption capacity that saturates at lower pressure than those comprising large diameter nanotubes. The fraction of open-ended nanotubes in a sample can be estimated by scaling the simulated internal adsorption inside nanotubes to obtain a near perfect fit between simulated and experimental isotherms. This procedure allows extrapolation of adsorption properties to conditions in which all nanotubes in the sample are open-ended.  相似文献

A demand currently exists for a method of assessing the purity of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs), which will allow for meaningful material comparisons. An established metric and protocol will enable accurate and reproducible purity claims to be substantiated. In the present work, the ability to accurately quantify the mass fraction of SWNTs in the carbonaceous portion of a given sample is demonstrated, using optical absorption spectroscopy on both laser and arc discharge-generated SWNT-N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMA) dispersions. Verification of purity assessment protocols is based upon constructed sample sets comprising designed mass fractions of purified SWNTs and representative carbonaceous synthesis byproducts. Application of a previously reported method based on a ratio of the areal absorbance from linear subtractions of the second interband electronic transitions of semiconducting SWNTs ((S)E(22)) has shown a severe overestimation of SWNT purity (average error >24%). Instead, the development of a nonlinear pi-plasmon model, which considers overlap of electronic transitions and peak broadening, has dramatically improved the purity assessment accuracy (average error <7%), derived from a strong correlation to the constructed sample sets. This approach has enabled corroboration of rapid assessment procedures, such as absorbance peak maxima ratio and Beer's law analysis, directed at purification monitoring and synthesis sample screening. Specifically, a simple protocol for purity assessment of laser and arc-discharge SWNTs has been established that can be extended to other synthetic types (i.e. CVD, HiPco, etc.) and diameter distributions.  相似文献
