Electron energy peak shifts and peak shapes were determined in the ionization of H2O, D2O, H2S and SO2 by Ne(3P2) and He(21S, 23S) metastable atoms. The shifts are large, especially in ionization of H2O and D2O into the ionic ground state and are probably mostly due to chemical interaction during the collision. In a previous paper the electron energy distribution curves for ionization of CO, HCl, HBr, N2O, NO2, CO2, COS and CS2 by helium, neon and argon metastables and the characteristics of this ionization were described1. In this paper the series of triatomic molecules was extended to the molecules H2O, D2O, H2S and SO2. Because all these molecules have considerable dipole moments it could be expected that the peak shifts might be enhanced as compared with other triatomic molecules.  相似文献

The interaction of water vapour with clean as well as with oxygen precovered Ni(110) surfaces was studied at 150 and 273 K, using UPS, ΔΦ, TDS, and ELS. The He(I) (He(II)) excited UPS indicate a molecular adsorption of H2O on Ni(110) at 150 K, showing three water-induced peaks at 6.5, 9.5 and 12.2 eV below EF (6.8, 9.4 and 12.7 eV below EF). The dramatic decrease of the Ni d-band intensity at higher exposures, as well as the course of the work function change, demonstrates the formation of H2O multilayers (ice). The observed energy shift of all water-induced UPS peaks relative to the Fermi level (ΔEmax = 1.5 eVat 200 L) with increasing coverage is related to extra-atomic relaxation effects. The activation energies of desorption were estimated as 14.9 and 17.3 kcal/mole. From the ELS measurements we conclude a great sensitivity of H2O for electron beam induced dissociation. At 273 K water adsorbs on Ni(110) only in the presence of oxygen, with two peaks at 5.7 and 9.3 eV below EF (He(II)), being interpreted as due to hydroxyl species (OH)δ? on the surface. A kinetic model for the H2O adsorption on oxygen precovered Ni(110) surfaces is proposed, and verified by a simple Monte Carlo calculation leading to the same dependence of the maximum amount of adsorbed H2O on the oxygen precoverage as revealed by work function measurements. On heating, some of the (OH)δ? recombines and desorbs as H2O at ? 320 K, leaving behind an oxygen covered Ni surface.

The initial stages of oxidation of Al single crystals are studied by soft X-ray photoemission spectroscopy at photon energies hv = 30 eV and 111.13 eV using synchroton radiation. Both the valence band region and the substrate Al 2p core levels are measured with high resolution to clarify the differences between (a) the geometrical effects at different surfaces, (100) and (110), and (b) between the oxidation by pure O2 and H2O. There is a well established but not very dramatic differences in the O 2p induced band between the two crystal surfaces when oxidizing with O2. The Al 2p spectra reveal an initial state of oxidation with less O atoms per Al atom than in Al2O3ate disappears at higher exposures with O2 while it is absent when oxidizing with H2O. Only about 1/4 of the exposure with H2O is needed to obtain the same coverage as with O2.  相似文献

Centrifugal distortion analyses based entirely on high-quality infrared data are carried out for the ground vibrational states of H216O, H217O, and H218O. As a result of the analyses, the values of 27 rotation and distortion constants for each species are determined. By using these constants it was possible to improve considerably the accuracy of the literature values for rotational energy levels at high Jτ, especially for H217O and H218O. The experimental values for the energy levels are deduced from the observed rotational transitions constituting the fitted data.  相似文献

H2S, H2 and S adsorbed on Ru(110) have been studied by angle-integrated ultraviolet photoemission (UPS) as part of a study of the effect of adsorbed sulfur, a common catalytic poison, on this Ru surface. For low exposures of H2S at 80 K, the work function rises to a value 0.16 eV above that of clean Ru(110) while the associated UPS spectra (hν = 21.2 eV) exhibit features similar to those of H(ads) and S(ads) and different from those of molecular H2S. We conclude that H2S dissociates completely at low coverages on Ru(110) at 80 K. At intermediate exposures the work function drops and the UPS spectra show new features which are attributed to the presence of an adsorbed SH species. This appears to be the first direct observation of this surface complex. At higher exposures the work function saturates at a value 0.36 eV below the clean value; the UPS spectra change markedly and indicate the adsorption of molecular H2S. Heating adsorbed H2S leaves a stable layer of S(ads) on Ru(110). The surface with adsorbed sulfur strongly modifies the adsorption at 80 K of a number of molecules relative to the clean Ru(110) surface.  相似文献

To provide information about the chemistry of water on Pd surfaces, we performed density functional slab model studies on water adsorption and decomposition at Pd(1 1 1) surface. We located transition states of a series of elementary steps and calculated activation energies and rate constants with and without quantum tunneling effect included. Water was found to weakly bind to the Pd surface. Co-adsorbed species OH and O that are derivable from H2O stabilize the adsorbed water molecules via formation of hydrogen bonds. On the clean surface, the favorable sites are top and bridge for H2O and OH, respectively. Calculated kinetic parameters indicate that dehydrogenation of water is unlikely on the clean regular Pd(1 1 1) surface. The barrier for the hydrogen abstraction of H2O at the OH covered surface is approximately 0.2-0.3 eV higher than the value at the clean surface. Similar trend is computed for the hydroxyl group dissociation at H2O or O covered surfaces. In contrast, the O-H bond breaking of water on oxygen covered Pd surfaces, H2Oad + Oad → 2OHad, is predicted to be likely with a barrier of ∼0.3 eV. The reverse reaction, 2OHad → H2Oad + Oad, is also found to be very feasible with a barrier of ∼0.1 eV. These results show that on oxygen-covered surfaces production of hydroxyl species is highly likely, supporting previous experimental findings.  相似文献

Electron energy-loss spectroscopy has been applied to the study of Si(111) surfaces covered with H2S, H2O and O2 at room temperature and the surfaces annealed at ~ 600°C. The experimental results strongly suggest that H2S and H2O adsorb in the molecular states at room temperature. It is proposed that O2 is first adsorbed in a molecular state, then adsorbs as atoms, and finally oxidizes forming SiO2.  相似文献

Using first-principles calculations, we systematically study the adsorption behavior of a single molecular H2O on the Be(0001) surface. We find that the favored molecular adsorption site is the top site with an adsorption energy of about 0.3 eV, together with the detailed electronic structure analysis, suggesting a weak binding strength of the H2O/Be(0001) surface. The adsorption interaction is mainly contributed by the overlapping between the s and pz states of the top-layer Be atom and the molecular orbitals 1b1 and 3a1 of H2O. The activation energy for H2O diffusion on the surface is about 0.3 eV. Meanwhile, our study indicates that no dissociation state exists for the H2O/Be(0001) surface.

Adiabatic potential energy surfaces (PESs) for three major isotopologues of water, H216O, H217O, and H218O, are constructed by fitting to observed vibration-rotation energy levels of the system using the nuclear motion program DVR3D employing an exact kinetic energy operator. Extensive tests show that the mass-dependent ab initio surfaces due to Polyansky et al. [O.L. Polyansky, A.G. Császár, S.V. Shirin, N.F. Zobov, P. Barletta, J. Tennyson, D.W. Schwenke, P.J. Knowles, Science 299 (2003) 539-542.] provide an excellent starting point for the fits. The refinements are performed using a mass-independent morphing function, which smoothly distorts the original adiabatic ab initio PESs. The best overall fit is based on 1788 experimental energy levels with the rotational quantum number J = 0, 2, and 5. It reproduces these levels with a standard deviation of 0.079 cm−1 and gives, when explicit allowance is made for nonadiabatic rotational effects, excellent predictions for levels up to J = 40. Theoretical linelists for all three isotopologues of water involved in the PES construction were calculated up to 26 000 cm−1 with energy levels up to J = 10. These linelists should make an excellent starting point for spectroscopic modelling and analysis.  相似文献

The adsorption of H2O on clean and K-covered Pt(111) was investigated by utilizing Auger, X-ray and ultra-violet photoemission spectroscopies. The adsorption on Pt(111) at 100–150 K was purely molecular (ice formation) in agreement with previous work. No dissociation of this adsorbed H2O was noted on heating to higher temperatures. On the other hand, adsorption of H2O on Pt(111) + K leads to dissociation and to the formation of OH species which were characterized by a work function increase, an O 1s binding energy of 530.9 eV and UPS peaks at 4.7 and 8.7 eV below the Fermi level. The amount of OH formed was proportional to the K coverage for θK > 0.06 whereas no OH could be detected for θ? 0.06. Dissociation of H2O occurred already at T = 100 K, with a sequential appearance of O 1s peaks at 531 and 533 eV representing OH and adsorbed H2O, respectively. At room temperature and above only the OH species was observed. Annealing of the surface covered with coadsorbed K/OH indicated the high stability of this OH species which could be detected spectroscopically up to 570 K. The adsorption energy of H2O coadsorbed with K and OH on Pt(111) is increased relative to that of H2O on Pt. The work function due to this adsorbed H2O increases whereas it decreases for H2O on Pt(111). The energy shifts of valence and O1s core levels of H2O on Pt + K as deduced from a comparison of gas phase and adsorbate spectra are 2.8–4.2 eV compared to ≈ 1.3–2.3 eV for H2O on Pt (111). This increased relaxation energy shift suggests a charge transfer screening process for H2O on Pt + K possibly involving the unoccupied 4a1 orbital of H2O. The occurrence of this mode of screening would be consistent with the higher adsorption energy of H2O on Pt + K and with its high propensity to dissociate into OH and H.  相似文献

The electron spectra resulting from thermal collisions of He* (predominantly 23S) metastable atoms with the seven triatomic molecules, CO2, COS, CS2, N2O H2S, SO2 and NO2, are compared with their respective 584-Å photoelectron spectra using a transmission-corrected electron spectrometer. The normalised relative electronic-state transition probabilities for production of ionic states in Penning ionization and photoionization are reported together with energy shifts (ΔE values) for He*(23S) Penning ionization. The cross-section for Penning ionization to lower states of NO2+ is extremely low as has been observed in other open shell molecules such as NO and O2.  相似文献

A study of the adsorption/desorption behavior of CO, H2O, CO2 and H2 on Ni(110)(4 × 5)-C and Ni(110)-graphite was made in order to assess the importance of desorption as a rate-limiting step for the decomposition of formic acid and to identify available reaction channels for the decomposition. The carbide surface adsorbed CO and H2O in amounts comparable to the clean surface, whereas this surface, unlike clean Ni(110), did not appreciably adsorb H2. The binding energy of CO on the carbide was coverage sensitive, decreasing from 21 to 12 kcalmol as the CO coverage approached 1.1 × 1015 molecules cm?2 at 200K. The initial sticking probability and maximum coverage of CO on the carbide surface were close to that observed for clean Ni(110). The amount of H2, CO, CO2 and H2O adsorbed on the graphitized surface was insignificant relative to the clean surface. The kinetics of adsorption/desorption of the states observed are discussed.  相似文献

The adsorption and condensation of H2O(D2O) on ZnO(101̄0), (0001)Zn and (0001̄)O surfaces was investigated by means of thermal desorption (TDS) and UV photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS). The clean ZnO single-crystal surfaces were prepared by Ar-ion sputtering and annealing and characterised by Auger electron spectroscopy, LEED, UPS and work-function measurements. On all three surfaces six different adsorption states were found. In the monolayer regime there is a stronger bonding to Zn sites (desorption temperature 340 K) than to O sites (190 K), The bonding to the Zn sites seems to be accompanied by some clustering. Before the chemisorption layer is completed a first ice state is found whose desorption temperature shifts from 162 to 168 K with increasing exposures. At higher exposures the multilayer ice state is found at 152 K. On the (0001̄)O face defect-induced features were identified. The water lone-pair orbital 1b1, whose energy falls between the O p and the Zn 3d emission of the substrate and which is known to show bonding shifts, was analysed using angle-resolved UPS. In the monolayer, the main chemisorption states are found at EBV(1b1) = ?9.6 eV for the (0001)Zn face and at ? 10.6 eV for the (0001̄)O face and are compared with the multilayer ice emission at 1̄1.1 eV. The difference in binding energies shows the same trend as the TDS data. For the (101̄0) face the 1b1 emission is very broad, indicating some overlap between different states.  相似文献

We have extended our analysis of the (010) vibrational state of H2S, this time using Watson's A-reduced Hamiltonian (through P8 terms) in the I′ rotational representation. We have determined separate sets of (010) upper state constants for each isotopomer (H232S, H233S, and H234S) by fitting the ν2 spectral lines, keeping the ground state constants fixed to the values determined by Flaud, Camy-Peyret, and Johns. Determinable coefficients for H232S and a slightly revised set of ν2 line assignments for H233S and H234S are also reported.  相似文献

In this paper, using monochromatic He and Ne discharge lines, we report the ultraviolet photoemission results for CO and H2O adsorbed on a Pt crystal. For chemisorbed CO, we use the energy dependence of the photoionization cross section to deduce that the 5σ?1π splitting is approximately 1 eV and that the 5σ is located at about ?8.1 eV while the 1π is at ?9.1 eV. The distribution of metal electrons changes in two ways upon CO chemisorption: a d character peak is found at ?4 to ?5 eV and emission at Ef is strongly depleted. For the weakly adsorbed water molecule, we find preferential attenuation of Pt states near Ef that has heretofore been observed for strongly chemisorbed systems.  相似文献

The adsorption and reaction of H2O on clean and oxygen precovered Ni(110) surfaces was studied by XPS from 100 to 520 K. At low temperature (T<150 K), a multilayer adsorption of H2O on the clean surface with nearly constant sticking coefficient was observed. The O 1s binding energy shifted with coverage from 533.5 to 534.4 eV. H2O adsorption on an oxygen precovered Ni(110) surface in the temperature range from 150 to 300 K leads to an O 1s double peak with maxima at 531.0 and 532.6 eV for T=150 K (530.8 and 532.8 eV at 300 K), proposed to be due to hydrogen bonded Oads… HOH species on the surface. For T>350 K, only one sharp peak at 530.0 eV binding energy was detected, due to a dissociation of H2O into Oads and H2. The s-shaped O 1s intensity-exposure curves are discussed on the basis of an autocatalytic process with a temperature dependent precursor state.  相似文献

TOF spectra of scattered primary and surface recoiled neutrals and ions for 3 keV Ar+ bombardment of clean La and Yb and H2, O2, and H2O saturated La surfaces are presented. The spectra are analyzed in terms of single (SS) and multiple (MS) scattering of the primary ions and surface recoiling (SR) of adsorbate atoms. Measurement of spectra of neutrals + ions and neutrals alone allows determination of scattered ion fractions Y. The Y values for the SS event are high for clean La (37%) and lower for adsorbate covered La (32% for H2, 13% for O2, and 8% for H2O); Yb exhibits a similar behavior, i.e. 16% for clean Yb and 5% for O2 + H2O covered Yb. Photon emission accompanying the scattering collision has been observed from clean La and Yb and adsorbate covered La. A preferential inelastic energy loss of 15 ± 3 eV for the SS event has been observed for scattered neutrals as opposed to ions for La and H2 saturated La at 135°. These results are interpreted within the models for Auger and resonant electronic charge exchange transitions during approach or departure of an ion with a surface and the electron promotions occuring during close atomic encounters where the electron shells are interpenetrating.  相似文献
