The boundary layer flow over a uniformly moving vertical surface with suction or injection is studied when the buoyancy forces assist or oppose the flow. Similarity solutions are obtained for the boundary layer equations subject to power law temperature and velocity boundary conditions. The effect is of various governing parameters, such as Prandtl number Pr, temperature exponent n, injection parameter d, and the mixed convection parameter λ=Gr/Re2, which determine the velocity and temperature distributions and the heat transfer coefficient, are studied. The heat transfer coefficient increases as λ assisting the flow for all d at Pr=0.72 however, for n=−1 it decreases sharply with λ. On the other hand, increasing λ has no effect on heat transfer coefficient for Pr=10 at n=0, and 1 for almost all values of d studied. However, for n=−1 it has similar effect as for Pr=0.72. It is also found that Nusselt number increases as n increases for fixed λ and d. Received on 26 March 1997  相似文献

The analysis of laminar mixed convection in boundary layers adjacent to a vertical, continuously stretching sheet has been presented. The velocity and temperature of the sheet were assumed to vary in a power-law form, that is, u w (x)=Bx m and T w (x)−T =Ax n . In the presence of buoyancy force effects, similarity solutions were reported for the following two cases: (a) n=0 and m=0.5, which corresponds to an isothermal sheet moving with a velocity of the form u w =Bx 0.5 and (b) n=1 and m=1, which corresponds to a continuous, linearly stretching sheet with a linear surface temperature distribution, i.e. T w T =Ax. Formulation of the present problem shows that the heat transfer characteristics depends on four governing parameters, namely, the velocity exponent parameter m, the temperature exponent parameter n, the buoyancy force parameter G *, and Prandtl number of the fluid. Numerical solutions were generated from a finite difference method. Results for the local Nusselt number, the local friction coefficient, and temperature profiles are presented for different governing parameters. Effects of buoyancy force and Prandtl number on the flow and heat transfer characteristics are thoroughly examined. Received on 17 July 1997  相似文献

An numerical study of the flow and heat transfer characteristics associated with a heated, continuously stretching surface being cooled by a mixed convection flow has been carried out. The relevant heat transfer mechanisms are of interest in a wide variety of practical applications, such as hot rolling, continuous casting, extrusion, and drawing. The surface velocity of the continuously stretching sheet was assumed to vary according to a power-law form, that is, u w (x)=Cx p . Two conditions of surface heating were considered, a variable wall temperature (VWT) in the form T w (x)−T =Ax n and a variable surface heat flux (VHF) in the form q w (x)=Bx m . The governing differential equations are transformed by introducing proper nonsimilarity variables and solved numerically using a procedure based on finite difference approximations. Results for the local Nusselt number and the local friction coefficient are obtained for a wide range of governing parameters, such as the surface velocity parameter p, the wall temperature exponent n, the surface heat flux exponent m, the buoyancy force parameters (ξ for the VWT case and χ for the VHF case), and Prandtl number of the fluid. It is found that the local Nusselt number is increased with increasing the velocity exponent parameter p for the VWT case, while the opposite trend is observed for the VHF case. The local friction coefficient is increased for a decelerated stretching surface, while it is decreased for an accelerated stretching surface. Also, appreciable effects of the buoyancy force on the local Nusselt number and the local friction coefficient are observed for both VWT and VHF cases, as expected. In the present study we have explored the effects of thermal buoyancy on flow of a viscoelastic second grade fluid past a vertical, continuous stretching sheet of which the velocity and temperature distributions are assumed to vary according to a power-law form. The governing differential equations are transformed into dimensionless form using appropriate transformations and then solved numerically. The methods here employed are (1) the perturbation method together with the Shanks transformation, (2) the local non-similarity method with second level of truncation and (3) the implicit finite difference method for values of ξ ( = Gr x /Re x 2, defined as local mixed convection parameter) ranging in [0, 10]. The comparison between the solutions obtained by the aforementioned methods found in excellent agreement. Effects of the elasticity parameter λ on the skin-friction and heat transfer coefficients have been shown graphically for the fluids having the values of the Prandtl number equal to 0.72, 7.03 and 15.0. Effects of the viscoelastic parameter and the mixed convection parameter, ξ, on the temperature and velocity fields have also been studied. We notice that with the increase in visco-elastic parameter λ, velocity decreases whereas temperature increases and that velocity gradient is higher than that of temperature. The steady mixed convection boundary-layer flow over a vertical impermeable surface in a porous medium saturated with water at 4°C (maximum density) when the surface heat flux varies as x m and the velocity outside the boundary layer varies as x (1+2m)/2, where x measures the distance from the leading edge, is discussed. Assisting and opposing flows are considered with numerical solutions of the governing equations being obtained for general values of the flow parameters. For opposing flows, there are dual solutions when the mixed convection parameter λ is greater than some critical value λ c (dependent on the power-law index m). For assisting flows, solutions are possible for all values of λ. A lower bound on m is found, m > −1 being required for solutions. The nature of the critical point λ c is considered as well as various limiting forms; the forced convection limit (λ = 0), the free convection limit (λ → ∞) and the limits as m → ∞ and as m → −1.  相似文献

In this study, an analysis has been performed for heat and mass transfer with radiation effect of a steady laminar boundary-layer flow of a micropolar flow past a nonlinearly stretching sheet. Parameters n, K, k 0, Pr, Ec, and Sc represent the dominance of the nonlinearly effect, material effect, radiation effect, heat and mass transfer effects which have presented in governing equations, respectively. The similar transformation, the finite-difference method and Runge–Kutta method have been used to analyze the present problem. The numerical solutions of the flow velocity distributions, temperature profiles, the wall unknown values of θ′(0) and ϕ′(0) for calculating the heat and mass transfer of the similar boundary-layer flow are carried out as functions of n, Ec, k 0, Pr, Sc. The value of n, k 0, Pr and Sc parameters are important factors in this study. It will produce greater heat transfer efficiency with a larger value of those parameters, but the viscous dissipation parameter Ec and material parameter K may reduce the heat transfer efficiency. On the other hand, for mass transfer, the value of Sc parameter is important factor in this study. It will produce greater heat transfer efficiency with a larger value of Sc.  相似文献

In the present work, the effect of MHD flow and heat transfer within a boundary layer flow on an upper-convected Maxwell (UCM) fluid over a stretching sheet is examined. The governing boundary layer equations of motion and heat transfer are non-dimensionalized using suitable similarity variables and the resulting transformed, ordinary differential equations are then solved numerically by shooting technique with fourth order Runge–Kutta method. For a UCM fluid, a thinning of the boundary layer and a drop in wall skin friction coefficient is predicted to occur for higher the elastic number. The objective of the present work is to investigate the effect of Maxwell parameter β, magnetic parameter Mn and Prandtl number Pr on the temperature field above the sheet.  相似文献

The problem of the self-similar boundary flow of a “Darcy-Boussinesq fluid” on a vertical plate with temperature distribution T w(x) = T +A·x λ and lateral mass flux v w(x) = a·x (λ−1)/2, embedded in a saturated porous medium is revisited. For the parameter values λ = 1,−1/3 and −1/2 exact analytic solutions are written down and the characteristics of the corresponding boundary layers are discussed as functions of the suction/ injection parameter in detail. The results are compared with the numerical findings of previous authors. Received on 8 March 1999  相似文献

The present study is devoted to investigate the influences of mass transfer on buoyancy induced flow over vertical flat plate embedded in a non-Newtonian fluid saturated porous medium. The Ostwald–de Waele power-law model is used to characterize the non-Newtonian fluid behavior. Similarity solution for the transformed governing equations is obtained with prescribed variable surface heat flux. Numerical results for the details of the velocity, temperature and concentration profiles are shown on graphs. Excess surface temperature as well as concentration gradient at the wall associated with heat flux distributions, which are entered in tables, have been presented for different values of the power-law index n, buoyancy ration B and the exponent λ as well as Lewis number Le. The steady laminar boundary layer flow and heat transfer past a stretching sheet arre considered. Upper‐convected Maxwell (UCM) fluid is treated as a rheological model. The resulting nonlinear differential system is solved by homotopy analysis method (HAM). The influence of melting parameter (M), Prandtl number (Pr), Deborah number (β) and stretching ratio (A = a/c) on the velocity and temperature profiles is thoroughly examined. It is noticed that fields are effected appreciably with the variation of parameters. Furthermore, it is seen that the local Nusselt number is a decreasing function of melting parameter. The paper presents a study of the laminar mixed convection adjacent to vertical continuously stretching sheets, taking into account the effects of variable viscosity and variable thermal diffusivity. The similarity solutions are reported for isothermal sheet moving with a velocity of the form uw=Bx0.5 and a continuous linearly stretching sheet with a linear surface temperature distribution. The equations of conservation of mass, momentum and energy, which govern the flow and heat transfer, are solved numerically by using the shooting method. The numerical results obtained for the flow and heat transfer characteristics reveal many interesting behaviors. The numerical results show that, variable viscosity, variable thermal diffusivity, the velocity exponent parameter, the temperature exponent parameter and the buoyancy force parameter have significant influences on the velocity and temperature profiles, shear stress and Nusselt number in two cases air and water.  相似文献

In this paper the problem of momentum and heat transfer in a thin liquid film of power-law fluid on an unsteady stretching surface has been studied. Numerical solutions are obtained for some representative values of the unsteadiness parameter S and the power-law index n for a wide range of the generalized Prandtl number, 0.001 ≤ Pr ≤ 1000. Typical temperature and velocity profiles, the dimensionless film thickness, free-surface temperature, and the surface heat fluxes are presented at selected controlling parameters. The results show that increasing the value of n tends to increase the boundary-layer thickness and broadens the temperature distributions. The free-surface temperature of a shear thinning fluid is larger than that of a Newtonian fluid, but the opposite trend is true for a shear thickening fluid. For small generalized Prandtl numbers, the surface heat flux increases with a decrease in n, but the impacts of n on the heat transfer diminish for Pr greater than a moderate value (approximately 1 ≤ Pr ≤ 10, depending on the magnitude of S).  相似文献

Linear high-density polyethylenes with molar masses M w between 240 and 1,000,000 g/mol, obtained by metallocene catalysts, were characterized in shear using oscillatory and creep tests. The polydispersities of the molar mass distributions (MMDs) lay between 1 and 16. The resulting zero shear-rate viscosities η0 covered a range from 2.5×10−3 to around 108 Pas. Above a critical molar mass of M c≈2,900 g/mol, the experimental results can be described by the relation η0M w3.6, independently of the MMD. The oscillatory data were fitted with a Carreau–Yasuda equation. The resulting parameters were correlated to molecular structure. The parameter a, being a quantity for the width of the transition between the Newtonian and the non-Newtonian regime, showed a dependence on the molar mass M w but not on M w/M n. The parameter λ of the Carreau-Yasuda equation was found to be the reciprocal crossover frequency for all samples with a log-Gaussian MMD. λ depends on the molar mass M w and also on M w/M n.

The similarity solutions for the governing ordinary differential equations of the boundary layer corresponding to a stretching surface have been reported. Power law velocity and temperature distribution were assumed for velocity exponent 3≥m≥?0.41176, ?1.1≥m≥?3, and for temperature exponent 3≥n≥?3. Solutions have been found forn=0 and allm where heat transferred from the stretching surface to the ambient. The direction and amount of heat flow were found to be dependent on the magnitude ofn andm for the same Prandtl number. Nusselt number increases with increasingm andPr for uniform and variable surface temperature however, for uniform surface heat flux it decreases with increasingm for constantPr.  相似文献

Heat transfer characteristics of a non-Newtonian fluid on a power-law stretched surface of variable temperature with suction or injection were investigated. Similarity solutions of the laminar boundary layer equations describing heat transfer and fluid flow in a quiescent fluid were obtained and solved numerically. Velocity and temperature profiles as well as the Nusselt number, Nu, were studied for two thermal boundary conditions; uniform surface temperature and variable surface temperature, for different parameters; Prandtl number Pr, temperature exponent b, velocity exponent m, injection parameter d and power-law index n. It was found that decreasing injection parameter d, and power-law index n and increasing Prandtl number Pr and surface temperature exponent b enhance the heat transfer coefficient. Elliptical flow is common in the near vertical fracture area and in anisotropic reservoirs. However, the classical radial flow models cannot provide a complete analysis for elliptical flow. This article presents a new mathematic model for gas elliptical flow in tri-porosity gas reservoirs. The differential equation of the new model is written in Mathieu equation, so that the solution can also be expressed by Mathieu functions. The numerical solution of the corresponding Mathieu functions ce 2n (ξ, −q), Ke 2n (ξ, −q) and their derivatives are obtained to derive the dimensionless pseudo pressure drop in Laplace space. The sensitivities of tri-porosity systems, including the parameters related to anisotropies C De2S and ξ w, the storativity ratios ω f and ω m, and the interporosity flow coefficients λvf and λmf, are studied using Laplace numerical inversion. The new solution includes not only the factors considered in classic solutions in previous articles, but also incorporates the effect of reservoir anisotropy.  相似文献

The dynamics of a buoyant plume rising above a horizontal line heat source in a transverse, horizontal magnetic field is investigated. Similarity is shown to occur when the magnetic field strength varies as the −2/5 power of vertical distance from the source. The plume depends on two parameters — the Prandtl number (Pr) and the Lykoudis number (Z L). Families of exact closed form solutions are derived for Pr=5/9 and Pr≥2. A family of numerical integrations for Pr=0.01 (typical of liquid metals) is also reported. The magnetic field is shown to affect the profiles of velocity and temperature by altering the similarity functions, the coefficients, and the value of the independent similarity variable corresponding to a fixed physical position. An approximate closed form solution valid for low Pr and high Z L is presented. Possible experimental tests of the theory are proposed. This paper presents the electromagnetic wave propagation characteristics in plasma and the attenuation coefficients of the microwave in terms of the parameters he, v, w, L, wb. The φ800 mm high temperature shock tube has been used to produce a uniform plasma. In order to get the attenuation of the electromagnetic wave through the plasma behind a shock wave, the microwave transmission has been used to measure the relative change of the wave power. The working frequency is f = (2-35)GHz (ω=2πf, wave length A =15cm-8mm). The electron density in the plasma is ne = (3×10^10-1×10^14) cm^-3. The collision frequency v = (1×10^8-6×10^10) Hz. The thickness of the plasma layer L = (2-80)cm. The electron circular frequency ωb=eBo/me, magnetic flux density B0 = (0-0.84)T. The experimental results show that when the plasma layer is thick (such as L/λ≥10), the correlation between the attenuation coefficients of the electromagnetic waves and the parameters ne,v,ω, L determined from the measurements are in good agreement with the theoretical predictions of electromagnetic wave propagations in the uniform infinite plasma. When the plasma layer is thin (such as when both L and A are of the same order), the theoretical results are only in a qualitative agreement with the experimental observations in the present parameter range, but the formula of the electromagnetic wave propagation theory in an uniform infinite plasma can not be used for quantitative computations of the correlation between the attenuation coefficients and the parameters ne,v,ω, L. In fact, if ω<ωp, v^2<<ω^2, the power attenuations K of the electromagnetic waves obtained from the measurements in the thin-layer plasma are much smaller than those of the theoretical predictions. On the other hand, if ω>ωp, v^2<<ω^2 (just v≈f), the measurements are much larger than the theoretical results. Also, we have measured the electromagnetic wave power attenuation value under the magnetic field and without a magnetic field. The result indicates that the value measured under the magnetic field shows a distinct improvement.  相似文献

The unsteady natural convection boundary layer flow over a semi-infinite vertical cylinder is considered with combined buoyancy force effects, for the situation in which the surface temperature T w(x) and C w(x) are subjected to the power-law surface heat and mass flux as K(T /r) = −ax n and D(C /r) = −bx m . The governing equations are solved by an implicit finite difference scheme of Crank-Nicolson method. Numerical results are obtained for different values of Prandtl number, Schmidt number ‘n’ and ‘m’. The velocity, temperature and concentration profiles, local and average skin-friction, Nusselt and Sherwood numbers are shown graphically. The local Nusselt and Sherwood number of the present study are compared with the available result and a good agreement is found to exist. Received on 7 July 1998  相似文献
