Collisional quenching processes of Cd(¹P₁) have been studied directly, using dye-laser excitation and time-resolved fluorescence. Absolute cross sections for the quenching of Cd(¹P₁) by several gases have been determined, and the branching ratios for production of Cd(³P_J) for the quenching molecules N₂, CH₄, C₃Hg, and i-C₄H₁₀ have been shown to be close to unity.

The relative stabilities of the possible structures for beryllocene in the gas phase are investigated through ab initio LCAO MO SCF calculations. The C_5v structure supported by electron diffraction studies appears to be 12 kcal/mole less stable than the ferrocene-like D_5h (or D_5d) structure. However a less symmetrical structure, with the beryllium π bonded to one ring and σ bonded to the other ring, appears very close and may be responsible for the dipole moment observed for the molecule.
