Suppose G is a k-connected graph that does not contain Kk as a minor. What does G look like? This question is motivated by Hadwiger’s conjecture (Vierteljahrsschr. Naturforsch. Ges. Zürich 88 (1943) 133) and a deep result of Robertson and Seymour (J. Combin. Theory Ser. B. 89 (2003) 43).It is easy to see that such a graph cannot contain a (k−1)-clique, but could contain a (k−2)-clique, as Kk−5+G′, where G′ is a 5-connected planar graph, shows. In this paper, however, we will prove that such a graph cannot contain three “nearly” disjoint (k−2)-cliques. This theorem generalizes some early results by Robertson et al. (Combinatorica 13 (1993) 279) and Kawarabayashi and Toft (Combinatorica (in press)).  相似文献

An edge e of a k-connected graph G is said to be k-contractible (or simply contractible) if the graph obtained from G by contracting e (i.e., deleting e and identifying its ends, finally, replacing each of the resulting pairs of double edges by a single edge) is still k-connected. In 2002, Kawarabayashi proved that for any odd integer k ? 5, if G is a k-connected graph and G contains no subgraph D = K 1 + (K 2K 1,2), then G has a k-contractible edge. In this paper, by generalizing this result, we prove that for any integer t ? 3 and any odd integer k ? 2t + 1, if a k-connected graph G contains neither K 1 + (K 2K 1,t ), nor K 1 + (2K 2K 1,2), then G has a k-contractible edge.  相似文献

In this paper we discuss some basic properties of k-list critical graphs. A graph G is k-list critical if there exists a list assignment L for G with |L(v)|=k−1 for all vertices v of G such that every proper subgraph of G is L-colorable, but G itself is not L-colorable. This generalizes the usual definition of a k-chromatic critical graph, where L(v)={1,…,k−1} for all vertices v of G. While the investigation of k-critical graphs is a well established part of coloring theory, not much is known about k-list critical graphs. Several unexpected phenomena occur, for instance a k-list critical graph may contain another one as a proper induced subgraph, with the same value of k. We also show that, for all 2≤pk, there is a minimal k-list critical graph with chromatic number p. Furthermore, we discuss the question, for which values of k and n is the complete graph Knk-list critical. While this is the case for all 5≤kn, Kn is not 4-list critical if n is large.  相似文献

Connectivity of iterated line graphs   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Let k≥0 be an integer and Lk(G) be the kth iterated line graph of a graph G. Niepel and Knor proved that if G is a 4-connected graph, then κ(L2(G))≥4δ(G)−6. We show that the connectivity of G can be relaxed. In fact, we prove in this note that if G is an essentially 4-edge-connected and 3-connected graph, then κ(L2(G))≥4δ(G)−6. Similar bounds are obtained for essentially 4-edge-connected and 2-connected (1-connected) graphs.  相似文献

An edge of a k-connected graph is said to be k-contractible if the contraction of the edge results in a k-connected graph. In this paper, we prove that a (K1 + C4)-free minimally k-connected graph has a k-contractible edge, if around each vertex of degree k, there is an edge which is not contained in a triangle. This implies previous two results, one due to Thomassen and the other due to Kawarabayashi.  相似文献

We investigate graphs G such that the line graph L(G) is hamiltonian connected if and only if L(G) is 3-connected, and prove that if each 3-edge-cut contains an edge lying in a short cycle of G, then L(G) has the above mentioned property. Our result extends Kriesell’s recent result in [M. Kriesell, All 4-connected line graphs of claw free graphs are hamiltonian-connected, J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 82 (2001) 306-315] that every 4-connected line graph of a claw free graph is hamiltonian connected. Another application of our main result shows that if L(G) does not have an hourglass (a graph isomorphic to K5E(C4), where C4 is an cycle of length 4 in K5) as an induced subgraph, and if every 3-cut of L(G) is not independent, then L(G) is hamiltonian connected if and only if κ(L(G))≥3, which extends a recent result by Kriesell [M. Kriesell, All 4-connected line graphs of claw free graphs are hamiltonian-connected, J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 82 (2001) 306-315] that every 4-connected hourglass free line graph is hamiltonian connected.  相似文献

An edge e of a k-connected graph G is said to be a removable edge if G?e is still k-connected. A k-connected graph G is said to be a quasi (k+1)-connected if G has no nontrivial k-separator. The existence of removable edges of 3-connected and 4-connected graphs and some properties of quasi k-connected graphs have been investigated [D.A. Holton, B. Jackson, A. Saito, N.C. Wormale, Removable edges in 3-connected graphs, J. Graph Theory 14(4) (1990) 465-473; H. Jiang, J. Su, Minimum degree of minimally quasi (k+1)-connected graphs, J. Math. Study 35 (2002) 187-193; T. Politof, A. Satyanarayana, Minors of quasi 4-connected graphs, Discrete Math. 126 (1994) 245-256; T. Politof, A. Satyanarayana, The structure of quasi 4-connected graphs, Discrete Math. 161 (1996) 217-228; J. Su, The number of removable edges in 3-connected graphs, J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 75(1) (1999) 74-87; J. Yin, Removable edges and constructions of 4-connected graphs, J. Systems Sci. Math. Sci. 19(4) (1999) 434-438]. In this paper, we first investigate the relation between quasi connectivity and removable edges. Based on the relation, the existence of removable edges in k-connected graphs (k?5) is investigated. It is proved that a 5-connected graph has no removable edge if and only if it is isomorphic to K6. For a k-connected graph G such that end vertices of any edge of G have at most k-3 common adjacent vertices, it is also proved that G has a removable edge. Consequently, a recursive construction method of 5-connected graphs is established, that is, any 5-connected graph can be obtained from K6 by a number of θ+-operations. We conjecture that, if k is even, a k-connected graph G without removable edge is isomorphic to either Kk+1 or the graph Hk/2+1 obtained from Kk+2 by removing k/2+1 disjoint edges, and, if k is odd, G is isomorphic to Kk+1.  相似文献

Let D(G)=(di,j)n×n denote the distance matrix of a connected graph G with order n, where dij is equal to the distance between vi and vj in G. The largest eigenvalue of D(G) is called the distance spectral radius of graph G, denoted by ?(G). In this paper, some graft transformations that decrease or increase ?(G) are given. With them, for the graphs with both order n and k pendant vertices, the extremal graphs with the minimum distance spectral radius are completely characterized; the extremal graph with the maximum distance spectral radius is shown to be a dumbbell graph (obtained by attaching some pendant edges to each pendant vertex of a path respectively) when 2≤kn−2; for k=1,2,3,n−1, the extremal graphs with the maximum distance spectral radius are completely characterized.  相似文献

We combine two well-known results by Mader and Thomassen, respectively. Namely, we prove that for any k-connected graph G (k≥4), there is an induced cycle C such that GV(C) is (k−3)-connected and GE(C) is (k−2)-connected. Both “(k−3)-connected” and “(k−2)-connected” are best possible in a sense.  相似文献

For a graph G, let σ2(G) denote the minimum degree sum of two nonadjacent vertices (when G is complete, we let σ2(G)=). In this paper, we show the following two results: (i) Let G be a graph of order n≥4k+3 with σ2(G)≥n and let F be a matching of size k in G such that GF is 2-connected. Then GF is hamiltonian or GK2+(K2Kn−4) or ; (ii) Let G be a graph of order n≥16k+1 with σ2(G)≥n and let F be a set of k edges of G such that GF is hamiltonian. Then GF is either pancyclic or bipartite. Examples show that first result is the best possible.  相似文献

For non-negative integers i, j and k, let N i,j,k be the graph obtained by identifying end vertices of three disjoint paths of lengths i, j and k to the vertices of a triangle. In this paper, we prove that every 3-connected {K 1,3,N 3,3,3}-free graph is Hamiltonian. This result is sharp in the sense that for any integer i > 3, there exist infinitely many 3-connected {K 1,3,N i,3,3}-free non-Hamiltonian graphs.  相似文献

For a graph G let μ(G) denote the cyclomatic number and let ν(G) denote the maximum number of edge-disjoint cycles of G.We prove that for every k≥0 there is a finite set P(k) such that every 2-connected graph G for which μ(G)−ν(G)=k arises by applying a simple extension rule to a graph in P(k). Furthermore, we determine P(k) for k≤2 exactly.  相似文献

Equitable colorings of Kronecker products of graphs   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
For a positive integer k, a graph G is equitably k-colorable if there is a mapping f:V(G)→{1,2,…,k} such that f(x)≠f(y) whenever xyE(G) and ||f−1(i)|−|f−1(j)||≤1 for 1≤i<jk. The equitable chromatic number of a graph G, denoted by χ=(G), is the minimum k such that G is equitably k-colorable. The equitable chromatic threshold of a graph G, denoted by , is the minimum t such that G is equitably k-colorable for kt. The current paper studies equitable chromatic numbers of Kronecker products of graphs. In particular, we give exact values or upper bounds on χ=(G×H) and when G and H are complete graphs, bipartite graphs, paths or cycles.  相似文献

Let G be a graph and let D6(G)={vV(G)|dG(v)=6}. In this paper we prove that: (i) If G is a 6-connected claw-free graph and if |D6(G)|≤74 or G[D6(G)] contains at most 8 vertex disjoint K4’s, then G is Hamiltonian; (ii) If G is a 6-connected line graph and if |D6(G)|≤54 or G[D6(G)] contains at most 5 vertex disjoint K4’s, then G is Hamilton-connected.  相似文献

The stable Kneser graph SGn,k, n?1, k?0, introduced by Schrijver (1978) [19], is a vertex critical graph with chromatic number k+2, its vertices are certain subsets of a set of cardinality m=2n+k. Björner and de Longueville (2003) [5] have shown that its box complex is homotopy equivalent to a sphere, Hom(K2,SGn,k)?Sk. The dihedral group D2m acts canonically on SGn,k, the group C2 with 2 elements acts on K2. We almost determine the (C2×D2m)-homotopy type of Hom(K2,SGn,k) and use this to prove the following results. The graphs SG2s,4 are homotopy test graphs, i.e. for every graph H and r?0 such that Hom(SG2s,4,H) is (r−1)-connected, the chromatic number χ(H) is at least r+6.If k∉{0,1,2,4,8} and n?N(k) then SGn,k is not a homotopy test graph, i.e. there are a graph G and an r?1 such that Hom(SGn,k,G) is (r−1)-connected and χ(G)<r+k+2.  相似文献

The degree distance of a connected graph, introduced by Dobrynin, Kochetova and Gutman, has been studied in mathematical chemistry. In this paper some properties of graphs having minimum degree distance in the class of connected graphs of order n and size mn−1 are deduced. It is shown that any such graph G has no induced subgraph isomorphic to P4, contains a vertex z of degree n−1 such that Gz has at most one connected component C such that |C|≥2 and C has properties similar to those of G.For any fixed k such that k=0,1 or k≥3, if m=n+k and nk+3 then the extremal graph is unique and it is isomorphic to K1+(K1,k+1∪(nk−3)K1).  相似文献

Let G be a graph of order n and k a positive integer. A set of subgraphs H={H1,H2,…,Hk} is called a k-degenerated cycle partition (abbreviated to k-DCP) of G if H1,…,Hk are vertex disjoint subgraphs of G such that and for all i, 1≤ik, Hi is a cycle or K1 or K2. If, in addition, for all i, 1≤ik, Hi is a cycle or K1, then H is called a k-weak cycle partition (abbreviated to k-WCP) of G. It has been shown by Enomoto and Li that if |G|=nk and if the degree sum of any pair of nonadjacent vertices is at least nk+1, then G has a k-DCP, except GC5 and k=2. We prove that if G is a graph of order nk+12 that has a k-DCP and if the degree sum of any pair of nonadjacent vertices is at least , then either G has a k-WCP or k=2 and G is a subgraph of K2Kn−2∪{e}, where e is an edge connecting V(K2) and V(Kn−2). By using this, we improve Enomoto and Li’s result for n≥max{k+12,10k−9}.  相似文献

We present a new condition on the degree sums of a graph that implies the existence of a long cycle. Let c(G) denote the length of a longest cycle in the graph G and let m be any positive integer. Suppose G is a 2-connected graph with vertices x1,…,xn and edge set E that satisfies the property that, for any two integers j and k with j < k, xjxk ? E, d(xi) ? j and d(xk) ? K - 1, we have (1) d(xi) + d(xk ? m if j + k ? n and (2) if j + k < n, either m ? n or d(xj) + d(xk) ? min(K + 1,m). Then c(G) ? min(m, n). This result unifies previous results of J.C. Bermond and M. Las Vergnas, respectively.  相似文献

We prove that if max{dG(x),dG(y)}≥(nk+1)/2 for any x,yV(G) with xy and xyE(G), then G has k vertex-disjoint subgraphs H1,…,Hk such that V(H1)∪?∪V(Hk)=V(G) and Hi is a cycle or K1 or K2 for each 1≤ik, unless k=2 and G=C5, or k=3 and G=K1C5.  相似文献
