This paper consists of two parts. First we set up a general scheme of local traps in a homogeneous deterministic quantum system. The current of particles caught by the trap is linked to the dynamical behaviour of the trap states. In this way, transport properties in a homogeneous system are related to spectral properties of a coherent dynamics. Next we apply the scheme to a system of Fermions in the one-particle approximation. We obtain in particular lower bounds for the dynamical entropy in terms of the current induced by the trap.

Basic applications of the information entropy concept to chemical objects are reviewed. These applications deal with quantifying chemical and electronic structures of molecules, signal processing, structural studies on crystals, and molecular ensembles. Recent advances in the mentioned areas make information entropy a central concept in interdisciplinary studies on digitalizing chemical reactions, chemico-information synthesis, crystal engineering, as well as digitally rethinking basic notions of structural chemistry in terms of informatics.

A system’s response to disturbances in an internal or external driving signal can be characterized as performing an implicit computation, where the dynamics of the system are a manifestation of its new state holding some memory about those disturbances. Identifying small disturbances in the response signal requires detailed information about the dynamics of the inputs, which can be challenging. This paper presents a new method called the Information Impulse Function (IIF) for detecting and time-localizing small disturbances in system response data. The novelty of IIF is its ability to measure relative information content without using Boltzmann’s equation by modeling signal transmission as a series of dissipative steps. Since a detailed expression of the informational structure in the signal is achieved with IIF, it is ideal for detecting disturbances in the response signal, i.e., the system dynamics. Those findings are based on numerical studies of the topological structure of the dynamics of a nonlinear system due to perturbated driving signals. The IIF is compared to both the Permutation entropy and Shannon entropy to demonstrate its entropy-like relationship with system state and its degree of sensitivity to perturbations in a driving signal.

Charles Bennett's measure of physical complexity for classical objects, namely logical-depth, is used to prove that a chaotic classical dynamical system is not physically complex. The natural measure of physical complexity for quantum objects, quantum logical-depth, is then introduced to prove that a chaotic quantum dynamical system too is not physically complex.

In this paper, we study the phenomena of collapse and anomalous diffusion in shared mobility systems. In particular, we focus on a fleet of vehicles moving through a stations network and analyse the effect of self-journeys in system stability, using a mathematical simplex under stochastic flows. With a birth-death process approach, we find analytical upper bounds for random walk and we monitor how the system collapses by super diffusing under different randomization conditions. Using the multi-scale entropy metric, we show that real data from a bike-sharing fleet in the city of Salamanca (Spain) present a complex behaviour with more of a 1/f signal than a disorganized system with a white noise signal.

This paper describes inverse eigenvalue problems that arise in studying qualitative dynamics in systems biology models. An algorithm based on lift-and-project iterations is proposed, where the lifting step entails solving a constrained matrix inverse eigenvalue problem. In particular, prior to carrying out the iterative steps, $a$-$priori$ bounds on the entries of the Jacobian matrix are computed by relying on the reaction network structure as well as the form of the rate law expressions for the model under consideration. Numerical results on a number of models show that the proposed algorithm can be used to computationally explore the possible dynamical scenarios while identifying the important mechanisms via the use of sparsity-promoting regularization.

The purpose of the present paper is to study the entropy hs(Ф) of a quantum dynamical systems Ф = ( L, s, Ф), where s is a bayessian state on an orthomodular lattice L. Having introduced the notion of entropy hs( Ф, A) of partition A of a Boolean algebra B with respect to a state s and a state preserving homomorphism Ф, we prove a few results on that, define the entropy of a dynamical system hs(Ф), and show its invariance. The concept of sufficient families is also given and we establish that hs (Ф) comes out to be equal to the supremum of hs (Ф,A), where A varies over any sufficient family. The present theory has then been extended to the quantum dynamical system ( L, s, Ф), which as an effect of the theory of commutators and Bell inequalities can equivalently be replaced by the dynamical system (B, s0, Ф), where B is a Boolean algebra and so is a state on B.  相似文献

We formulate a mathematical model for the daily activities of a cow (eating, lying down, and standing) in terms of a piecewise linear dynamical system. We analyze the properties of this bovine dynamical system representing the single animal and develop an exact integrative form as a discrete-time mapping. We then couple multiple cow “oscillators” together to study synchrony and cooperation in cattle herds. We comment on the relevant biology and discuss extensions of our model. With this abstract approach, we not only investigate equations with interesting dynamics but also develop biological predictions. In particular, our model illustrates that it is possible for cows to synchronize less when the coupling is increased.

Entropy-based methods have received considerable attention in the quantification of structural complexity of real-world systems. Among numerous empirical entropy algorithms, conditional entropy-based methods such as sample entropy, which are associated with amplitude distance calculation, are quite intuitive to interpret but require excessive data lengths for meaningful evaluation at large scales. To address this issue, we propose the variational embedding multiscale sample entropy (veMSE) method and conclusively demonstrate its ability to operate robustly, even with several times shorter data than the existing conditional entropy-based methods. The analysis reveals that veMSE also exhibits other desirable properties, such as the robustness to the variation in embedding dimension and noise resilience. For rigor, unlike the existing multivariate methods, the proposed veMSE assigns a different embedding dimension to every data channel, which makes its operation independent of channel permutation. The veMSE is tested on both stimulated and real world signals, and its performance is evaluated against the existing multivariate multiscale sample entropy methods. The proposed veMSE is also shown to exhibit computational advantages over the existing amplitude distance-based entropy methods.

We study the emission of photons from germinating seeds using an experimental technique designed to detect light of extremely small intensity. We analyze the dark count signal without germinating seeds as well as the photon emission during the germination process. The technique of analysis adopted here, called diffusion entropy analysis (DEA) and originally designed to measure the temporal complexity of astrophysical, sociological and physiological processes, rests on Kolmogorov complexity. The updated version of DEA used in this paper is designed to determine if the signal complexity is generated either by non-ergodic crucial events with a non-stationary correlation function or by the infinite memory of a stationary but non-integrable correlation function or by a mixture of both processes. We find that dark count yields the ordinary scaling, thereby showing that no complexity of either kinds may occur without any seeds in the chamber. In the presence of seeds in the chamber anomalous scaling emerges, reminiscent of that found in neuro-physiological processes. However, this is a mixture of both processes and with the progress of germination the non-ergodic component tends to vanish and complexity becomes dominated by the stationary infinite memory. We illustrate some conjectures ranging from stress induced annihilation of crucial events to the emergence of quantum coherence.

Insomnia is a common sleep disorder that is closely associated with the occurrence and deterioration of cardiovascular disease, depression and other diseases. The evaluation of pharmacological treatments for insomnia brings significant clinical implications. In this study, a total of 20 patients with mild insomnia and 75 healthy subjects as controls (HC) were included to explore alterations of electroencephalogram (EEG) complexity associated with insomnia and its pharmacological treatment by using multi-scale permutation entropy (MPE). All participants were recorded for two nights of polysomnography (PSG). The patients with mild insomnia received a placebo on the first night (Placebo) and temazepam on the second night (Temazepam), while the HCs had no sleep-related medication intake for either night. EEG recordings from each night were extracted and analyzed using MPE. The results showed that MPE decreased significantly from pre-lights-off to the period during sleep transition and then to the period after sleep onset, and also during the deepening of sleep stage in the HC group. Furthermore, results from the insomnia subjects showed that MPE values were significantly lower for the Temazepam night compared to MPE values for the Placebo night. Moreover, MPE values for the Temazepam night showed no correlation with age or gender. Our results indicated that EEG complexity, measured by MPE, may be utilized as an alternative approach to measure the impact of sleep medication on brain dynamics.

Variational algorithms have gained prominence over the past two decades as a scalable computational environment for Bayesian inference. In this article, we explore tools from the dynamical systems literature to study the convergence of coordinate ascent algorithms for mean field variational inference. Focusing on the Ising model defined on two nodes, we fully characterize the dynamics of the sequential coordinate ascent algorithm and its parallel version. We observe that in the regime where the objective function is convex, both the algorithms are stable and exhibit convergence to the unique fixed point. Our analyses reveal interesting discordances between these two versions of the algorithm in the region when the objective function is non-convex. In fact, the parallel version exhibits a periodic oscillatory behavior which is absent in the sequential version. Drawing intuition from the Markov chain Monte Carlo literature, we empirically show that a parameter expansion of the Ising model, popularly called the Edward–Sokal coupling, leads to an enlargement of the regime of convergence to the global optima.

Studying heart rate dynamics would help understand the effects caused by a hyperkinetic heart in patients with hyperthyroidism. By using a multiscale entropy (MSE) analysis of heart rate dynamics derived from one-channel electrocardiogram recording, we aimed to compare the system complexity of heart rate dynamics between hyperthyroid patients and control subjects. A decreased MSE complexity index (CI) computed from MSE analysis reflects reduced system complexity. Compared with the control subjects (n = 37), the hyperthyroid patients (n = 37) revealed a significant decrease (p < 0.001) in MSE CI (hyperthyroid patients 10.21 ± 0.37 versus control subjects 14.08 ± 0.21), sample entropy for each scale factor (from 1 to 9), and high frequency power (HF) as well as a significant increase (p < 0.001) in low frequency power (LF) in normalized units (LF%) and ratio of LF to HF (LF/HF). In conclusion, besides cardiac autonomic dysfunction, the system complexity of heart rate dynamics is reduced in hyperthyroidism. This finding implies that the adaptability of the heart rate regulating system is impaired in hyperthyroid patients. Additionally, it might explain the exercise intolerance experienced by hyperthyroid patients. In addition, hyperthyroid patients and control subjects could be distinguished by the MSE CI computed from MSE analysis of heart rate dynamics.

This work investigates the temporal statistical structure of time series of electric field (EF) intensity recorded with the aim of exploring the dynamical patterns associated with periods with different human activity in urban areas. The analyzed time series were obtained from a sensor of the EMF RATEL monitoring system installed in the campus area of the University of Novi Sad, Serbia. The sensor performs wideband cumulative EF intensity monitoring of all active commercial EF sources, thus including those linked to human utilization of wireless communication systems. Monitoring was performed continuously during the years 2019 and 2020, allowing us to investigate the effects on the patterns of EF intensity of varying conditions of human mobility, including regular teaching and exam activity within the campus, as well as limitations to mobility related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Time series analysis was performed using both simple statistics (mean and variance) and combining the information-theoretic measure of information storage (IS) with the method of surrogate data to quantify the regularity of EF dynamic patterns and detect the presence of nonlinear dynamics. Moreover, to assess the possible coexistence of dynamic behaviors across multiple temporal scales, IS analysis was performed over consecutive observation windows lasting one day, week, month, and year, respectively coarse grained at time scales of 6 min, 30 min, 2 h, and 1 day. Our results document that the EF intensity patterns of variability are modulated by the movement of people at daily, weekly, and monthly scales, and are blunted during periods of restricted mobility related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Mobility restrictions also affected significantly the regularity of the EF intensity time series, resulting in lower values of IS observed simultaneously with a loss of nonlinear dynamics. Thus, our analysis can be useful to investigate changes in the global patterns of human mobility both during pandemics or other types of events, and from this perspective may serve to implement strategies for safety assessment and for optimizing the design of networks of EF sensors.

Summary In this paper we propose a new method to predict the secondary structure of proteins from sequence data. A satisfactory improvement of the available efficiency of prediction is obtained. The described method takes into account the frequency of each pair of amino acids in alpha-helical, beta-sheet and random coil regions according to previous results that the sequences of amino acidic residues in these regions are autocorrelated. The rules of the method are not derived from the analysis of the regions of proteins with a known secondary structure, but they are instead based on statistical considerations. In such a way the obtained value of efficiency of the method (88%) has a high reliability: in fact, it is correct to test a method only on the data not used to construct it. A new definition of efficiency of a predictive method is given to resolve the ambiguities arising from the previously accepted definitions.

The logical structure of Quantum Mechanics (QM) and its relation to other fundamental principles of Nature has been for decades a subject of intensive research. In particular, the question whether the dynamical axiom of QM can be derived from other principles has been often considered. In this contribution, we show that unitary evolutions arise as a consequences of demanding preservation of entropy in the evolution of a single pure quantum system, and preservation of entanglement in the evolution of composite quantum systems. 6 We would also like to dedicate this work to the memory of Asher Peres, whose contributions and sharp comments guided the first steps of the present article.

Entropy profiling is a recently introduced approach that reduces parametric dependence in traditional Kolmogorov-Sinai (KS) entropy measurement algorithms. The choice of the threshold parameter r of vector distances in traditional entropy computations is crucial in deciding the accuracy of signal irregularity information retrieved by these methods. In addition to making parametric choices completely data-driven, entropy profiling generates a complete profile of entropy information as against a single entropy estimate (seen in traditional algorithms). The benefits of using “profiling” instead of “estimation” are: (a) precursory methods such as approximate and sample entropy that have had the limitation of handling short-term signals (less than 1000 samples) are now made capable of the same; (b) the entropy measure can capture complexity information from short and long-term signals without multi-scaling; and (c) this new approach facilitates enhanced information retrieval from short-term HRV signals. The novel concept of entropy profiling has greatly equipped traditional algorithms to overcome existing limitations and broaden applicability in the field of short-term signal analysis. In this work, we present a review of KS-entropy methods and their limitations in the context of short-term heart rate variability analysis and elucidate the benefits of using entropy profiling as an alternative for the same.

The combination of network sciences, nonlinear dynamics and time series analysis provides novel insights and analogies between the different approaches to complex systems. By combining the considerations behind the Lyapunov exponent of dynamical systems and the average entropy of transition probabilities for Markov chains, we introduce a network measure for characterizing the dynamics on state-transition networks with special focus on differentiating between chaotic and cyclic modes. One important property of this Lyapunov measure consists of its non-monotonous dependence on the cylicity of the dynamics. Motivated by providing proper use cases for studying the new measure, we also lay out a method for mapping time series to state transition networks by phase space coarse graining. Using both discrete time and continuous time dynamical systems the Lyapunov measure extracted from the corresponding state-transition networks exhibits similar behavior to that of the Lyapunov exponent. In addition, it demonstrates a strong sensitivity to boundary crisis suggesting applicability in predicting the collapse of chaos.
