It is shown that an extensive set of accurate ionization‐chamber measurements with a primary polychromatic synchrotron X‐ray beam transmitted through various filter combinations/thicknesses can be used to quite effectively estimate the absolute flux distribution. The basic technique is simple but the `inversion' of the raw data to extract the flux distribution is a fundamentally ill‐posed problem. It is demonstrated, using data collected at the Imaging and Medical Beamline (IMBL) of the Australian Synchrotron, that the absolute flux can be quickly and reliably estimated if a suitable choice of filters is made. Results are presented as a function of the magnetic field (from 1.40 to 4.00 T) of the superconducting multi‐pole wiggler insertion device installed at IMBL. A non‐linear least‐squares refinement of the data is used to estimate the incident flux distribution and then comparison is made with calculations from the programs SPECTRA, XOP and spec.exe. The technique described is important not only in estimating flux itself but also for a variety of other, derived, X‐ray properties such as beam quality, power density and absorbed‐dose rate. The applicability of the technique with a monochromatic X‐ray beam for which there is significant harmonic contamination is also demonstrated. Whilst absolute results can also be derived in this monochromatic beam case, relative (integrated) flux values are sufficient for our primary aim of establishing reliable determinations of the percentages of the various harmonic components.  相似文献

A set‐up for simultaneous imaging and diffraction that yields radiograms with up to 200 frames per second and 5.6 µm effective pixel size is presented. Tomograms and diffractograms are acquired together in 10 s. Two examples illustrate the attractiveness of combining these methods at the EDDI beamline for in situ studies.  相似文献

A method to calibrate and stabilize the incident X‐ray energy for anomalous diffraction data collection is provided and has been successfully used at the single‐crystal diffraction beamline 1W2B at the Beijing Synchrotron Radiation Facilities. Employing a feedback loop to control the movement of the double‐crystal monochromator, this new method enables the incident X‐ray energy to be kept within a 0.2 eV range at the inflection point of the absorption edge.  相似文献

Combined X‐ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) and diffracted X‐ray tracking (DXT) measurements of carbon‐black nanocrystals embedded in styrene–butadiene rubber were performed. From the intensity fluctuation of speckle patterns in a small‐angle scattering region (XPCS), dynamical information relating to the translational motion can be obtained, and the rotational motion is observed through the changes in the positions of DXT diffraction spots. Graphitized carbon‐black nanocrystals in unvulcanized styrene–butadiene rubber showed an apparent discrepancy between their translational and rotational motions; this result seems to support a stress‐relaxation model for the origin of super‐diffusive particle motion that is widely observed in nanocolloidal systems. Combined measurements using these two techniques will give new insights into nanoscopic dynamics, and will be useful as a microrheology technique.  相似文献

Synchrotron X‐ray radiography, due to its high temporal and spatial resolutions, provides a valuable means for understanding the in operando water transport behaviour in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells. The purpose of this study is to address the specific artefact of imaging sample movement, which poses a significant challenge to synchrotron‐based imaging for fuel cell diagnostics. Specifically, the impact of the micrometer‐scale movement of the sample was determined, and a correction methodology was developed. At a photon energy level of 20 keV, a maximum movement of 7.5 µm resulted in a false water thickness of 0.93 cm (9% higher than the maximum amount of water that the experimental apparatus could physically contain). This artefact was corrected by image translations based on the relationship between the false water thickness value and the distance moved by the sample. The implementation of this correction method led to a significant reduction in false water thickness (to ~0.04 cm). Furthermore, to account for inaccuracies in pixel intensities due to the scattering effect and higher harmonics, a calibration technique was introduced for the liquid water X‐ray attenuation coefficient, which was found to be 0.657 ± 0.023 cm?1 at 20 keV. The work presented in this paper provides valuable tools for artefact compensation and accuracy improvements for dynamic synchrotron X‐ray imaging of fuel cells.  相似文献

Spray deposition of thin films and coatings is a widely used manufacturing process owing to its low cost, versatility and simple implementation. The objective of the presented experiments was to investigate whether X‐ray absorption measurements on solutes carried by aerosols are possible, and what count rates can be achieved depending on solution flow through and the resulting mass density in the interrogation volume. The investigated prototypical spray aerosol was InCl3 dissolved in water or ethanol dispersed via an ultrasonic nebulizer. InCl3 spray is essential for the ion layer gas reaction process used for the deposition of In2S3 buffer layers for highly efficient chalcopyrite solar cells. The discussed experiments demonstrate that measurements are possible, but that the achievement of good signal‐to‐noise ratios requires extended sampling times and concentrated solutions.  相似文献

The properties of X‐ray vacuum‐gap waveguides (WGs) with additional periodic structure on one of the reflecting walls are studied. Theoretical considerations, numerical simulations and experimental results confirm that the periodic structure imposes additional conditions on efficient propagation of the electromagnetic field along the WGs. The transmission is maximum for guided modes that possess sufficient phase synchronism with the periodic structure (here called `super‐resonances'). The field inside the WGs is essentially given at low incidence angle by the fundamental mode strongly coupled with the corresponding phased‐matched mode. Both the simulated and the experimental diffraction patterns show in the far field that propagation takes place essentially only for low incidence angles, confirming the mode filtering properties of the structured X‐ray waveguides.  相似文献

X‐ray reflectivity studies of the structure of liquid–vapour and liquid–liquid interfaces at modern sources, such as free‐electron lasers, are currently impeded by the lack of dedicated liquid surface diffractometers. It is shown that this obstacle can be overcome by an alternative experimental approach that uses the natural curvature of a liquid drop for variation of the angle of incidence. Two modes of operation are shown: (i) sequential reflectivity measurements by a nanometre beam and (ii) parallel acquisition of large ranges of a reflectivity curve by micrometre beams. The feasibility of the two methods is demonstrated by studies of the Hg/vapour, H2O/vapour and Hg/0.1 M NaF interface. The obtained reflectivity curves match the data obtained by conventional techniques up to 5αc in micro‐beam mode and up to 35αc in nano‐beam mode, allowing observation of the Hg layering peak.  相似文献

A new system of slits called `spiderweb slits' have been developed for depth‐resolved powder or polycrystalline X‐ray diffraction measurements. The slits act on diffracted X‐rays to select a particular gauge volume of sample, while absorbing diffracted X‐rays from outside of this volume. Although the slit geometry is to some extent similar to that of previously developed conical slits or spiral slits, this new design has advantages over the previous ones in use for complex heterogeneous materials and in situ and operando diffraction measurements. For example, the slits can measure a majority of any diffraction cone for any polycrystalline material, over a continuous range of diffraction angles, and work for X‐ray energies of tens to hundreds of kiloelectronvolts. The design is generated and optimized using ray‐tracing simulations, and fabricated through laser micromachining. The first prototype was successfully tested at the X17A beamline at the National Synchrotron Light Source, and shows similar performance to simulations, demonstrating gauge volume selection for standard powders, for all diffraction peaks over angles of 2–10°. A similar, but improved, design will be implemented at the X‐ray Powder Diffraction beamline at the National Synchrotron Light Source II.  相似文献

Dramatic technical progress seen over the past decade now allows the plastic properties of materials to be investigated under extreme pressure and temperature conditions. Coupling of high‐pressure apparatuses with synchrotron radiation significantly improves the quantification of differential stress and specimen textures from X‐ray diffraction data, as well as specimen strains and strain rates by radiography. This contribution briefly reviews the recent developments in the field and describes state‐of‐the‐art extreme‐pressure deformation devices and analytical techniques available today. The focus here is on apparatuses promoting deformation at pressures largely in excess of 3 GPa, namely the diamond anvil cell, the deformation‐DIA apparatus and the rotational Drickamer apparatus, as well as on the methods used to carry out controlled deformation experiments while quantifying X‐ray data in terms of materials rheological parameters. It is shown that these new techniques open the new field of in situ investigation of materials rheology at extreme conditions, which already finds multiple fundamental applications in the understanding of the dynamics of Earth‐like planet interior.  相似文献

A method of calculating the transmission of hard X‐ray radiation through a perfect and well oriented photonic crystal and the propagation of the X‐ray beam modified by a photonic crystal in free space is developed. The method is based on the approximate solution of the paraxial equation at short distances, from which the recurrent formula for X‐ray propagation at longer distances is derived. A computer program for numerical simulation of images of photonic crystals at distances just beyond the crystal up to several millimetres was created. Calculations were performed for Ni inverted photonic crystals with the [111] axis of the face‐centred‐cubic structure for distances up to 0.4 mm with a step size of 4 µm. Since the transverse periods of the X‐ray wave modulation are of several hundred nanometres, the intensity distribution of such a wave is changed significantly over the distance of several micrometres. This effect is investigated for the first time.  相似文献

In this paper the first practical application of kinoform lenses for the X‐ray reflectivity characterization of thin layered materials is demonstrated. The focused X‐ray beam generated from a kinoform lens, a line of nominal size ~50 µm × 2 µm, provides a unique possibility to measure the X‐ray reflectivities of thin layered materials in sample scanning mode. Moreover, the small footprint of the X‐ray beam, generated on the sample surface at grazing incidence angles, enables one to measure the absolute X‐ray reflectivities. This approach has been tested by analyzing a few thin multilayer structures. The advantages achieved over the conventional X‐ray reflectivity technique are discussed and demonstrated by measurements.  相似文献

The commissioning and performance characterization of a position‐sensitive detector designed for fast X‐ray powder diffraction experiments on beamline I11 at Diamond Light Source are described. The detecting elements comprise 18 detector‐readout modules of MYTHEN‐II silicon strip technology tiled to provide 90° coverage in 2θ. The modules are located in a rigid housing custom designed at Diamond with control of the device fully integrated into the beamline data acquisition environment. The detector is mounted on the I11 three‐circle powder diffractometer to provide an intrinsic resolution of Δ2θ? 0.004°. The results of commissioning and performance measurements using reference samples (Si and AgI) are presented, along with new results from scientific experiments selected to demonstrate the suitability of this facility for powder diffraction experiments where conventional angle scanning is too slow to capture rapid structural changes. The real‐time dehydrogenation of MgH2, a potential hydrogen storage compound, is investigated along with ultrafast high‐throughput measurements to determine the crystallite quality of different samples of the metastable carbonate phase vaterite (CaCO3) precipitated and stabilized in the presence of amino acid molecules in a biomimetic synthesis process.  相似文献

Lα and Lβ X‐ray fluorescence spectra of a lead metallic sheet were measured using an energy dispersive X‐ray spectrometer by changing the X‐ray tube voltage and the material of the primary filter. The Lα to Lβ intensity ratio changed from Lα: Lβ = 3: 1 at 15 kV to Lα: Lβ = 1: 1 at 50 kV depending on the X‐ray tube voltage and the filter. The scattered X‐ray spectra of an acrylic slab instead of the sample in the sample holder were measured by changing the applied voltage and the material of the primary filter. The calculated values of the Pb Lα/Lβ intensity ratio of the metallic sheet using the Shiraiwa–Fujino formula by inserting the scattered X‐ray spectra of an acrylic plate as incident X‐ray spectra and the fundamental parameters taken from the Elam database were in good agreement with the experimental ones. We conclude that we can obtain an incident X‐ray spectrum approximately by measuring the scattered X‐ray spectrum without measuring the direct incident beam. The first microbeam synchrotron X‐ray fluorescence (µ‐SXRF) beamline using continuous synchrotron radiation from Siam Photon Source has been constructed and commissioned as of August 2011. Utilizing an X‐ray capillary half‐lens allows synchrotron radiation from a 1.4 T bending magnet of the 1.2 GeV electron storage ring to be focused from a few millimeters‐sized beam to a micrometer‐sized beam. This beamline was originally designed for deep X‐ray lithography (DXL) and was one of the first two operational beamlines at this facility. A modification has been carried out to the beamline in order to additionally enable µ‐SXRF and synchrotron X‐ray powder diffraction (SXPD). Modifications included the installation of a new chamber housing a Si(111) crystal to extract 8 keV synchrotron radiation from the white X‐ray beam (for SXPD), a fixed aperture and three gate valves. Two end‐stations incorporating optics and detectors for µ‐SXRF and SXPD have then been installed immediately upstream of the DXL station, with the three techniques sharing available beam time. The µ‐SXRF station utilizes a polycapillary half‐lens for X‐ray focusing. This optic focuses X‐ray white beam from 5 mm × 2 mm (H × V) at the entrance of the lens down to a diameter of 100 µm FWHM measured at a sample position 22 mm (lens focal point) downstream of the lens exit. The end‐station also incorporates an XYZ motorized sample holder with 25 mm travel per axis, a 5× ZEISS microscope objective with 5 mm × 5 mm field of view coupled to a CCD camera looking to the sample, and an AMPTEK single‐element Si (PIN) solid‐state detector for fluorescence detection. A graphic user interface data acquisition program using the LabVIEW platform has also been developed in‐house to generate a series of single‐column data which are compatible with available XRF data‐processing software. Finally, to test the performance of the µ‐SXRF beamline, an elemental surface profile has been obtained for a piece of ancient pottery from the Ban Chiang archaeological site, a UNESCO heritage site. It was found that the newly constructed µ‐SXRF technique was able to clearly distinguish the distribution of different elements on the specimen.  相似文献

A new method of harmonics rejection based on X‐ray refractive optics has been proposed. Taking into account the fact that the focal distance of the refractive lens is energy‐dependent, the use of an off‐axis illumination of the lens immediately leads to spatial separation of the energy spectrum by focusing the fundamental harmonic at the focal point and suppressing the unfocused high‐energy radiation with a screen absorber or slit. The experiment was performed at the ESRF ID06 beamline in the in‐line geometry using an X‐ray transfocator with compound refractive lenses. Using this technique the presence of the third harmonic has been reduced to 10?3. In total, our method enabled suppression of all higher‐order harmonics to five orders of magnitude using monochromator detuning. The method is well suited to third‐generation synchrotron radiation sources and is very promising for the future ultimate storage rings.  相似文献

Hydroxyapatite (HA) is largely used as bone graft; it seems to be the most promising synthetic implant material, mainly because of its excellent biocompatibility. The crystallinity, particle and pore size of HA are important characteristics and can be modified by decreasing basic structural form below 100 nm and have evoked a great amount of attention for improving prevention, diagnosis, and disease treatment, besides improving bone repair through the biodegradation of the material. The aim of this study was to investigate bone mineral content in bone samples with nanohydroxyapatite and HA spheres, specially its spatial distribution on bone microarchitecture. Circular bone defects were made in both tibiae of 12 White New Zeland adult rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) and were divided randomly into five groups – blood clot (control group), sintered HA, non‐sintered HA, sintered nanoHA and non‐sintered nanoHA – all materials in spherical shape, to smooth handling and accommodation of the surgical bed, and to minimize inflammatory response. The rabbits were euthanatized according to the experimental period of 1 and 4 weeks after surgery. The samples were evaluated by polarized microscopy as well as X‐ray microfluorescence in order to account the bone mineral content bone‐implant interfaces, through synchrotron radiation. Our results revealed greater newly formed bone area in the non‐sintered materials and control groups, and the used technique showed that the amount of calcium of new bone was consistent with both mature bone and HA spheres. In conclusion, the present findings suggest that HA‐based biomaterials are biocompatible, promote osteoconduction and favored bone repair. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

BioCARS, a NIH‐supported national user facility for macromolecular time‐resolved X‐ray crystallography at the Advanced Photon Source (APS), has recently completed commissioning of an upgraded undulator‐based beamline optimized for single‐shot laser‐pump X‐ray‐probe measurements with time resolution as short as 100 ps. The source consists of two in‐line undulators with periods of 23 and 27 mm that together provide high‐flux pink‐beam capability at 12 keV as well as first‐harmonic coverage from 6.8 to 19 keV. A high‐heat‐load chopper reduces the average power load on downstream components, thereby preserving the surface figure of a Kirkpatrick–Baez mirror system capable of focusing the X‐ray beam to a spot size of 90 µm horizontal by 20 µm vertical. A high‐speed chopper isolates single X‐ray pulses at 1 kHz in both hybrid and 24‐bunch modes of the APS storage ring. In hybrid mode each isolated X‐ray pulse delivers up to ~4 × 1010 photons to the sample, thereby achieving a time‐averaged flux approaching that of fourth‐generation X‐FEL sources. A new high‐power picosecond laser system delivers pulses tunable over the wavelength range 450–2000 nm. These pulses are synchronized to the storage‐ring RF clock with long‐term stability better than 10 ps RMS. Monochromatic experimental capability with Biosafety Level 3 certification has been retained.  相似文献

New procedures to characterize the x‐ray primary beam, obtaining an accurate assessment of the actual photon spectrum, are needed for quality control of x‐ray tubes for medical purposes. The Compton scattering technique is very useful for determining x‐ray spectra (in the 10–150 kVp range), avoiding the pile‐up effect in the detector, since usually there is insufficient space available to apply other techniques. The Compton scattering procedure was simulated using the Monte Carlo method by means of the MCNP code. In order to validate the simulation model, experimental measurements were made at the Centro Nacional de Dosimetría (CND), Valencia, Spain, using a calibrated x‐ray tube. Different spectra were measured varying the operational parameters (kV, mA, Al). Furthermore, CND provided the theoretical spectra corresponding to the x‐ray measurement conditions. Using the developed model, a response matrix was obtained by simulating the interactions of different monoenergetic beams. During the construction of the primary photon spectrum it is necessary to calculate the inverse of the response matrix. Because this matrix is ill‐conditioned, its inversion is not a simple process. This problem was solved using a truncated singular value decomposition (TSVD), method together with variational regularization. The performance of the methodology was tested with experimental and simulated x‐ray spectra. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
